All-round Munaweera sinks Kalabagan

A round-up of the Dhaka Premier Division matches on November 18, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Nov-2014Sri Lanka batsman Dilshan Munaweera struck a half-century and then collected a five-wicket haul to help Prime Bank Cricket Club crush Kalabagan Cricket Academy by 113 runs at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Batting first, Prime Bank lost the opener Saikat Ali early, but Munaweera and Shadman Islam counterattacked by putting up a 123-run stand for the second wicket. Shadman chipped in with a patient 53, while Munaweera thumped seven fours and four sixes to make an 80-ball 72, his second consecutive fifty. Both batsmen were out by the 35th over, but a 21-ball 40 from Nurul Hasan down the order lifted the score to 274.Kalabagan never really got going in their chase, and were pegged back by wickets at regular intervals. Jeevan Mendis (36) and Nazmul Hossain Shanto (35) chipped in with thirties, but no other batsman was able to cross 22, as Kalabagan were dismissed for 161 inside 41 overs. Munaweera ended with 5 for 40, while Taijul Islam and Shuvagata Hom snared two wickets apiece.Old DOHS Sports Club lost their third game in a row, going down by 12 runs to Partex Sporting club in a low-scoring encounter at Fatullah. Partex began poorly after choosing to bat, slipping to 12 for 3, before Mehrab Hossain jnr and captain Rajin Saleh stabilised the innings with a cautious 68-run stand. A slew of wickets towards the end limited Partex to 189 for 8, but Old DOHS had a difficult time during the chase. They slid to 79 for 5, and later 119 for 6, but the seventh wicket partnership between Kafi Khan and Mohammad Rony seemed to put the chase on course. At 164 for 6, Old DOHS looked set to win, but they lost their final four wickets for 13 runs to stay stuck at the bottom of the table.Mohammedan Sporting Club registered their second win in three matches, by beating Brothers Union by 44 runs in Savar. Mohammedan were led by fifties from Ezaz Ahmed and Naeem Islam to score 259, to collect four points.Opener Ezaz scored a patient 84 off 119 with seven fours and three sixes, and Naeem scored 52 at No. 4, after Mohammedan opted to bat. Left-arm spinner Asif Hasan took 5 for 47 in 10 overs but Ariful Haque’s 36-ball 47 took them past 250.Brothers Union hardly got any substantial partnerships going. Eight of their nine batsmen scored in double-digits but could not capitalise on the starts, and Nazmus Sadat top-scored with 46. The Mohammedan bowlers struck at regular intervals to ensure Brothers Union were restricted to 215 for 7.

Waitrose named as new England sponsor

The ECB has announced that the supermarket chain Waitrose will become the England team’s primary sponsor from 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff09-May-2013The ECB has announced that the supermarket chain Waitrose will become the England team’s primary sponsor from 2014. The three-year deal, reported to be worth around £20m, will see Waitrose’s logo replace that of Brit Insurance on all England kit.Brit had confirmed its intention not to renew its sponsorship arrangement last year and there had been a possibility that a new commercial backer could take over before the contract expired. However, Brit will remain associated with the England team throughout back-to-back Ashes series in 2013 and 2014, with Waitrose featuring on shirts for the visit of Sri Lanka next year. The move to a high street sponsor, rather than from the financial services industry, is aimed at increasing exposure among the general public. Waitrose, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership, has 291 branches throughout England, Wales and Scotland and the ECB chief executive, David Collier, said the deal would help English cricket to “engage further with a mass, family audience”.”We are delighted to welcome Waitrose as the new sole sponsor of our England teams,” Collier, said. “The organisation begins their relationship with the sport with one of our marquee partnerships, and as a brand with a rich history synonymous with quality, they are a perfect fit for the ECB and our values. The ECB’s commercial director John Perera added: “This partnership is especially pleasing for us as we welcome another high profile, high-street brand into our ever-expanding commercial partner family. I would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Brit who has been an excellent and valued partner of the ECB since 2010, and will remain as Team Sponsor until April 2014.”Waitrose have invested in sports marketing previously and currently sponsor the Premier League football club Reading. They will be the fourth commercial name to appear on England shirts, after Tetley Bitter, Vodafone and Brit. “We currently export our products to a quarter of the world’s countries and associating Waitrose with this great national and international sport will enable us to build our brand globally,” Mark Price, managing director of Waitrose, said.

Jamaluddin 90 rescues Assam

A round-up of the first day’s play of Group C’s sixth-round matches in the Ranji Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Dec-2013
ScorecardAn unbeaten 90 from Jamaluddin Syed Mohammad – his third first-class fifty – helped Assam overcome a shaky start and lift the team to 236 for 8 against Goa in Guwhati. That total had seemed unlikely when the Goa medium-pacer Harshad Hanumant Gadekar – whose second-innings five-for had helped his team seal last round’s match against Tripura – had run through Assam’s top order in the morning to leave them at 68 for 5 in the 31st over. Then Jamaluddin and Gokul Sharma stage a recovery with a sixth-wicket stand of 101. The pair batted out more than 43 overs before Gokul was eventually caught by Amogh Sunil Desai off his own bowling for 46.Jamaluddin however carried on, hitting a total of 14 fours on the day, and added a further 67 runs with the lower order to take Assam into a decent position heading into the second day.
ScorecardManisankar Murasingh’s maiden first-class ton capped off an extremely productive day for Tripura, as they finished strongly at 285 for 2 against Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal.Murasingh struck 13 fours and four sixes during his unbeaten 140, and together with Yogesh Takawale, who made 65, added 188 for the third wicket. Takawale hit six fours during his knock, as the pair batted out almost 52 overs to build on the solid starts provided by their openers Samrat Singha and KB Pawan.Hyderabad captain Akshath Reddy shuffled his pack to try and make a breakthrough, introducing as many as nine bowlers, but only Ravi Kiran and Amol Shinde ended with scalps, in a frustrating day’s play for the hosts.
ScorecardMedium-pacers Samad Fallah and Shrikant Mundhe picked up seven wickets between them to skittle Jammu & Kashmir out for 85, before a fifty from Harshad Khadiwale helped Maharashtra take firm control of the match in Pune.J&K, put in to bat, failed to get going in their innings, as only four batsmen managed to reach double digits. Ram Dayal, with 18, was the team’s top-scorer at No.9, as Fallah and Mundhe ran through their line-up in less than 30 overs. Fallah finished with 4 for 32, while Mundhe took 3 for 21.Maharashtra lost Vijay Zol for 23 in the 14th over, but recovered with a 119-run partnership for the second wicket between Khadiwale and Sangram Dilp Atitkar, who chipped in with 62. Atitkar looked to be heading towards his fourth first-class hundred, but was caught off Samiullah Beigh in the 49th over.Nonetheless, Khadiwale carried on and made his way to an unbeaten 79, as the hosts ended at 185 for 2, with a lead of 100 to carry into day two.
ScorecardVishal Bhatia, the left-arm spinner, took a five-wicket haul to restrict Kerala to a small total before Bipul Sharma struck a spirited half-century to help Himachal Pradesh score some vital psychological points at the end of an eventful first day in Kannur. Although Himachal still trail by 50 with five wickets down, they would believe they now hold the edge on a tailor-made pitch for the spinners.Click here to read the full report.

'Happy with where Dhoni batted' – Fleming

Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming has said he was “perfectly happy” with where MS Dhoni batted in the IPL final against Mumbai Indians and stated that the captain batted at No. 7 because he was there to win the game for the team

ESPNcricinfo staff27-May-2013Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming has said he was “perfectly happy” with where MS Dhoni batted in the IPL final against Mumbai Indians and stated that the captain batted at No. 7 because he was there to win the game for the team.Chasing 149 at the Eden Gardens, Super Kings were reeling at 3 for 3 within the first 10 balls, as they lost Michael Hussey, Suresh Raina and S Badrinath. But captain Dhoni came out to the middle only in the seventh over when they had lost two more wickets, of Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja, with the score on 36, with Mumbai in control of the game.”He has a role to play,” Fleming said. “He was left not out at the end after recovering a pretty poor innings but the strength of the side is that we have key players that come in at key times and if you’ve watched most of the season you would have seen that.”Despite being unbeaten, Dhoni ran out of partners as wickets kept falling and the asking rate kept rising. His 45-ball 63, including five sixes, wasn’t enough as Super Kings fell short by 23 runs.”He is there to win the game for us,” Fleming said. “We have other players that should have put us in a position to win. They didn’t do that so he had to recover the situation. And hence he went in when he did. But I’m perfectly happy with where he batted.”Super Kings won 11 out of 16 league matches this season and won more matches than any other team away from home. But their franchise was affected by off-field issues after their top official, Gurunath Meiyappan, was arrested by Mumbai Police.”We actually had a pretty good IPL,” Fleming said. “It was…trouble-free up to the last week, [but] we as a team played very well. We’re usually inconsistent but we were probably the most consistent we’ve ever been and even in that semi-final we played well and deserved to be at the top.”I guess as a coach it’s very satisfying that we were able to maintain an element of consistency in a long and topsy-turvy tournament. But we just got through a lot in the last week and we didn’t respond that well and we would have loved to have responded well on the field but we were outplayed so hats off to Mumbai.”Super Kings played their fourth consecutive IPL final, and their fifth overall, but failed to get their hands on the trophy, like last year. Admitting to a lacklustre display in this year’s final, Fleming was keen to set the record straight next time.”Last year we lost when we played well, this year we lost playing poorly, well the batting side of it was poor. We’re still proud of making five out of six finals but we’d like to have won four out of five or three out of five, for sure. The fact that we won two is great but this certainly hurts and the goal now is to get into this situation again and try and rectify it.”Fleming was lavish in his praise for Mumbai’s bowling which routed Chennai to 39 for 6 in the eighth over. “I thought [Lasith] Malinga bowled an outstanding spell,” he said. “He took the new ball for them, which he hasn’t done for a while and they looked desperate. It was almost like they knew they were short of runs, that it was only a par score.”We just had to get through that first spell and it was something in the short break that we talked about and look with Mike Hussey, he got probably one of the best balls of the IPL and that certainly gives any side a lift and he has the same effect on us.”

Stumbling stars collide

ESPNcricinfo previews the match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils at the Wankhede Stadium

The Preview by Abhishek Purohit08-Apr-2013Match factsTuesday, April 9, 2013
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Not a familiar sight for Mumbai fans•BCCIBig PictureThe last time Ricky Ponting played at Wankhede Stadium, he was leading Australia in a one-dayer against India. There was no IPL yet. Ponting made a half-century, and one can imagine the kind of reception he must have got from the Mumbai crowd, which has a ready ability to heckle visiting teams and captains. More than five years later, when Ponting walks out to the toss on Tuesday night, you can be sure there’ll be nothing hostile about the crowd’s behaviour towards the Mumbai Indians captain. It’ll be the franchise’s first home game of the season, and Wankhede will know, and respect, what it is witnessing when Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar walk out together. Not only will Mumbai be backed by the screaming hordes, they will also be lifted by the presence of their key bowler, Lasith Malinga, who is likely to be fit for his first match this season. Malinga should come in for one of Mitchell Johnson or Dwayne Smith.Mumbai had a batting failure against Chennai Super Kings, and were hauled back from the edge of defeat by an acrobatic catch from Kieron Pollard, who had bailed them out with an unbeaten fifty earlier in the game.Till the penultimate over against Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils were winning the game easily, David Warner having guided the chase sensibly. Then Warner was run out, and the rest choked. Daredevils have lost both matches so far, and will be hoping Virender Sehwag has recovered enough from his back troubles to play. Daredevils will also welcome back last season’s highest wicket-taker, Morne Morkel, and the feisty Roelof van der Merwe, who will join the squad after playing in South Africa’s domestic T20 final.Players to watchSachin Tendulkar has received many shocking lbw decisions over his career. The one he got against Chennai Super Kings wasn’t one of them, still, his reaction was about as livid as you’ll ever see Tendulkar on the field. It is surprising the match referee did not have anything to say. That is a different matter, but Tendulkar’s disgust showed his desperation to make runs. Has the presence of another legend at the other end made him even more determined?Morne Morkel had 25 wickets last IPL season at just over seven runs an over. Indications are he will play, and if he does, the tall fast bowler should enjoy the bounce the Wankhede generally offers. Mumbai have had batting stutters in both matches so far, and facing Morkel will be a testing prospect.Stats and trivia Last year at Wankhede, Mumbai Indians were shot out for 92, with the Daredevils quick bowlers picking up seven wickets. Kieron Pollard is eight short of 3500 T20 runsQuotes”T20 is a game of improvisation but you have to strike a balance between improvising and sticking to your own style. I want to balance it out even more so that it does not get too much one-sided.”

Harbhajan five seals easy win

Harbhajan Singh took five wickets as Essex avenged their CB40 defeat against the Netherlands earlier in the season with a comfortable victory in their Group A tie at Colchester.

19-Aug-2012
ScorecardHarbhajan Singh took five wickets as Essex avenged their CB40 defeat against the Netherlands earlier in the season with a comfortable victory in their Group A tie at Colchester.Ravi Bopara’s return to action following a month’s absence for personal reasons lasted just 11 balls from which he gathered only a single. Bopara had missed England’s second Test with South Africa at Headingley and also pulled out of a an England Lions fixture.A loose stroke outside the off stump against Mudassar Bukhari ended with wicketkeeper Wesley Barresi taking a fine diving catch to send him back to the pavilion. Bopara later found consolation with three wickets. In contrast, half-centuries at better than a run a ball from Tom Westley, Ryan ten Doeschate and James Foster lifted Essex to a total of 314 for 8, their highest total in 40-over cricket. Netherlands could only respond with 197 all outWestley smashed nine fours and a six while making 59 from 40 balls as he opened the innings, before being dismissed when he offered a return catch to the first delivery sent down by left-arm spinner Pieter Seelaar.Ten Doeschate made 52 from 46 balls with the help of three fours and a six before he also fell to Seelaar, this time leg before.Foster upped the tempo with 79 from only 48 deliveries before departing in the last over of the innings when bowled by Logan van Beek.Faced with their huge task, Holland did manage to get off to a fine start and the first 50 was raised in the sixth over thanks to Stephan Myburgh whose quickfire 33 included three sixes before he was caught in the deep attacking off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. That was followed by a partnership of 69 in a dozen overs between Michael Swart and Tom Cooper before the latter also became a victim of Harbhajan, trapped lbw for 35 reverse sweeping to give the bowler his second wicket.Swart’s commendable effort came to an end shortly afterwards. Immediately after completing his half-century from 51 balls, he departed lbw to Bopara and following his dismissal, the visitors never threatened to find the acceleration needed to pose any sort of threat.

Injured Samuels to be replaced by Alex Hales

Melbourne Renegades will replace Marlon Samuels with England player Alex Hales after the West Indian was ruled out of the remainder of the Big Bash League due to an eye injury

Alex Malcolm08-Jan-2013The Big Bash League (BBL) Technical Committee has allowed the Melbourne Renegades to replace Marlon Samuels with England batsman Alex Hales, after the West Indian was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to the injury sustained during Sunday night’s fiery clash against the Melbourne Stars.Samuels suffered a suspected fracture of the eye-socket when struck in the face, via a top-edge, while facing Lasith Malinga. The injury brought to an end a turbulent tournament for Samuels. Brisbane Heat coach Darren Lehmann and Adelaide Strikers coach Darren Berry had been charged for breaches of the Code of Behaviour when they publicly questioned the legitimacy of Samuels’ bowling action. Berry got into a heated discussion with Samuels prior to his side’s match with the Renegades, before Samuels became the pantomime villain again against the Stars on Sunday when he embroiled himself in arguments with both David Hussey and Shane Warne, who was later fined and suspended for the incident.Samuels’ absence won’t create a void as his replacement Hales will be available for the Renegades’ remaining games – their last preliminary match against the Sydney Sixers, and the semi-finals.Hales has played 14 Twenty20 internationals for England over the past 18 months. He made 99 from just 68 balls against West Indies in June on his home ground at Trent Bridge. It is one of four international half-centuries he has scored, the latest coming against India during a two-match tour in December. The final round of preliminary matches begins when Melbourne Stars host Sydney Thunder at the MCG. Malinga has also been withdrawn from the Stars’ team as he joins the Sri Lankan squad in preparation for the ODI series, starting on Friday. The Australian ODI squad members David Hussey, Clint McKay and Glenn Maxwell have been allowed to play for the Stars, as well as Usman Khawaja, who will represent the winless Thunder. But should the Stars make the finals, they will lose Hussey, McKay, and Maxwell, and reports suggest an assessment on Malinga’s availability for the semi-final will be made closer to the time should the Stars qualify for the final four. The Stars called up former England allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas as cover for Malinga. Mascarenhas took two wickets in both the semi-final and final of the England domestic T20 tournament last year to help Hampshire win the title. He also represented Hampshire at the Champions League, and played two Twenty20s for Wellington in New Zealand on December 28 and January 1. Mascarenhas must play the Sydney Thunder to be available for selection in the semi-final should the Stars qualify.Meanwhile, Hobart Hurricanes batsman Travis Birt was fined $1000 by Cricket Australia for a Code of Behaviour breach. Birt was initially cited for striking the advertising foam on the rope after he was given out against the Sydney Thunder but was not fined over the incident. Birt was, however, fined for breaching Rule 9: Detrimental Public Comment when he criticised umpires for “ruining games,” on Twitter on December 23.

India strike after swift Warner century

With the focus firmly on how the Australians would front up to Test cricket following Phillip Hughes’ demise, David Warner scattered whatever nerves or doubts there may have been with a blazing start to the first Test

The Report by Abhishek Purohit08-Dec-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Emotional start to the series

David Warner scattered whatever nerves or doubts there may have been ahead of Australia’s resumption of the international season following Phillip Hughes’ death with a blazing start to the first Test. Warner hit seven of his first 15 deliveries for four on the way to his fifth century in seven Tests in 2014 after Michael Clarke chose to bat on an easy-paced Adelaide Oval pitch. Clarke motored to 60 before he retired hurt, and Steven Smith breezed to an unbeaten 72. India regained some ground with the second new ball producing three late strikes. The day belonged to Warner, as he shredded India’s attack for 145 off 163 deliveries before mis-hitting the debutant legspinner Karn Sharma to deep midwicket. India’s new-ball pair of Mohammed Shami and Varun Aaron were taken for 178 in 34.2 overs, and the visitors would have suffered more had it not been for Ishant Sharma’s discipline.Far more worrying for Australia than India’s attack was what seemed to be a relapse of Clarke’s chronic back problem. Clarke’s partnership with Warner had grown to 118 when he grimaced as soon as he avoided a short ball in the 44th over, and had to leave the field after some doing stretching and talking to the team physio. Barring the odd play-and-miss and some edged boundaries, Clarke had batted with assurance.India stuck to their strategy of bowling round the wicket to Warner throughout the first session, even though it had proved expensive enough already. They may have probably wanted to deny Warner width, but still ended up providing plenty of room, particularly at the start, and the opener punished them. He was especially severe on Aaron who went for three fours in his opening over, driven first ball through extra cover and flayed backward of point twice. Shami got the same treatment in his second over.Apart from a probing first over from Shami to Rogers, India’s fast bowlers could not find much swing or seam and the ball came on nicely for Warner to hit on the up freely. The first bouncer the Indians tried was in the fourth over when Aaron made Warner crouch. The batsman’s response was to play an upper cut the next ball, another bouncer, for four.Warner was already on 37 off 20 when Ishant came on and bowled a maiden to the opener. In his next over, he slanted one across to have Chris Rogers nicking a drive to second slip for 9. Shane Watson eased himself to a start in his first Test since March, before chasing a wide one from Aaron on 14 and slashing to second slip, where Shikhar Dhawan made no mistake again.Warner pulled Aaron for successive fours to reach his fifty off 45 balls and moved to 100 off 105, Virat Kohli allowing an easy single with mid-off pushed to the deep. Warner looked up to the skies with emotion each time, something he also did on reaching 63, the score Hughes was batting on when he was felled by a bouncer.Clarke was welcomed by a sharp bouncer from Aaron, as Watson had been by Ishant. Even as Clarke gradually settled down, Warner kept drilling the fast bowlers through the off side.Shami began from over the wicket to Warner after lunch but wasn’t disciplined for long enough and leaked runs to Clarke. He did start the session with three successive dot balls to Warner, who pushed the fourth in the air, but Kohli had placed point too deep for it to be a chance.Karn made little impact with his largely flattish trajectory and up-and-down lengths and Warner slog-swept and reverse-swept him for boundaries. Apart from Warner’s ever-increasing score, India’s over-rate was also a concern for Kohli in his first Test as captain as they managed 50 in the first two sessions.Warner’s failed attempt to clear the field soon after tea took care of Kohli’s first worry, and M Vijay’s introduction lifted the over-rate. It also allowed a cautious Mitchell Marsh to bat himself in against harmless part-time offspin as Kohli used his slow bowlers for 13 successive overs.Smith was in superb touch, using his feet regularly to spin and driving and clipping the fast bowlers elegantly. Marsh developed enough confidence to step out and drive Karn against the turn through midwicket.Vijay was used for as many as 12 overs as India waited for the second new ball. Ishant Sharma deservingly took it as soon as it was available, but offered Smith a couple of freebies on the pads, the second of which took the batsman to 63, bringing another emotional acknowledgment. With Australia having reached 345 for 3, India appeared to be wasting the second new ball too when out of nowhere, Aaron got one to kick from a tight line and a surprised Marsh edged to gully on 41. Shami too found some control to go with his pace. The nightwatchman Nathan Lyon could not make it to stumps, and neither could Brad Haddin, edging Shami behind off what turned out to be the last ball of the day.

BCB in second stage of planning for Pakistan tour

The Bangladesh Cricket Board is in talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board about a short tour to the country next month

Mohammad Isam14-Dec-2012The Bangladesh Cricket Board is in talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board about a short tour to the country next month. BCB president Nazmul Hassan said that the talks are now all about a suitable timeframe for the tour.”We can’t go in December so we will speak to the PCB today, about whether we can fit in a small tour before the BPL,” Hassan told ESPNcricinfo.Bangladesh’s proposed tour to Pakistan hit a snag earlier this year when, on April 19, a Dhaka court order embargoed a series between the two scheduled for the end of April. In November, Hassan said that the BCB had made a “written commitment” to the PCB to go ahead with the tour.On Friday Hassan explained that they are now in the second phase of talks with the PCB because the first phase, which dealt with security issues, was satisfactory. “I have spoken to those who went for the security assessment and they are quite satisfied,” he said. “If we can agree on a time, we will go next month.”He also said that the players and the support staff will be spoken to about the tour, but no one will be forced to go on the tour. “The last time when we discussed [touring Pakistan], we wanted to talk to the players and find out their opinion. We will also speak to foreign staff but it is highly likely that they won’t go. That we can understand. We don’t want to force them.”Back in March, the ICC had introduced a “special dispensation” to be made only in “exceptional circumstances” that allowed bilateral series to take place even if the ruling body determined it “unsafe” to appoint its officials for these series. This would allow such series to be manned by “non-neutral match officials”, a departure from the ICC’s Standard Playing Conditions.Hassan said the dispensation will take effect if the ICC doesn’t send its officials to conduct the matches. “They [ICC] are quite clear about it. They want us to decide if we want to go or not. We will submit a security plan to them, after which they will decide whether they will send their match officials or not. If they don’t, we will have to appoint match officials.”
