England bowling prospect Jamie Porter survived a serious bout of the yips to help Essex keep Leicestershire firmly in check at Chelmsford.Porter pulled out in his delivery stride four times in a row as he attempted to bowl the third ball of his fifth over.Even when he did release the ball at the fifth attempt, the final steps to the crease were short and stuttering. Two balls later, however, he rapped Paul Horton on the pads and had the opener lbw for 19. The 23-year-old’s celebration was akin to Stuart Pearce exorcising his demons after netting a penalty in the shoot-out against Spain at Euro 96.Porter was helped through his nightmare by words of encouragement from veteran seamer David Masters standing at mid-on. He bowled a sixth over in his opening spell before returning later, claiming a second wicket, and finishing with figures of 2 for 61.Masters said: “There is not a lot you can say when someone runs in and they don’t know what to do, and he’s run in three or four times. He said to me, ‘Hod, I don’t know what’s happening’. I said, ‘Just relax, chill’.”He had a hard day today and that is part of cricket and part of the learning experience. It’s not all about running in and knocking people over – he’s had a lot of that. He’s been getting lots of wickets and bowling really well. He will learn from that.”But taking the wicket was perfect for him – he said he’d had it planned all the time!”I haven’t had anything like that in my career, so it’s sometimes hard to understand. It’s a little bit of a mental block sometimes, worrying about things. But he overcame it out there and I take my hat off because that is quite hard to do. He could quite easily have chucked the towel in.”There are a lot of people who have had it, but he is a strong lad, a strong character, and he’ll be fine. He had a bad day. He bowled a lot of no-balls and he struggled. But we all have days when we struggle. It’s a good learning curve for him; it’ll be good for him going forward.”Porter had been mentioned in dispatches as a future England bowler when he followed a memorable first season in the county game – when he took 50 wickets – by adding 28 more in his first six Specsavers County Championship matches this summer. But it was the tight and parsimonious bowling of Masters and Ravi Bopara that prevented Leicestershire racing away and overhauling Essex’s first-innings total. Both bowlers claimed three wickets, Masters for just 33 runs from 19 overs, Bopara for 43 in 21 overs. From the high point of 128 for 1, Leicestershire lost their last nine wickets for 115 runs in 43 overs. That they got within 25 runs of Essex’s total was thanks to a 135-ball 74 by opener Angus Robson. His third half-century of the season included 10 fours.Porter’s had been the last Essex wicket to fall at the start of the day’s play. Clint McKay sent two of his stumps flying with the 17th ball of the morning to finish with figures of 4 for 47 and Essex all out for 268.After the departure of Horton, Angus Robson and Neil Dexter put on 88 for the second wicket in 25.2 overs without due alarm and with some crisp hitting.Dexter was first to go for 33 from 72 balls when Matt Quinn ripped out his off stump soon after lunch. Robson was fourth man out when he top-edged Masters to James Foster. In between Leicestershire captain Mark Cosgrove had become the first of three victims for Tom Westley at second slip, steering the ball straight into his hands as if giving him pre-match catching practiceAadil Ali wafted outside off stump to give Westley a second catch, and Ned Eckersley completed the trio as Westley fell backwards to give Masters his third wicket.Mark Pettini, making his first appearance at Chelmsford since moving to the Midlands last year, batted pleasantly for 80 balls, six fours and 36 runs before he fell lbw to Bopara.Five runs later, Bopara accounted for Ben Raine, caught behind. McKay then scooped Porter to Dan Lawrence at point, which is where Rob Taylor perished soon after, to wrap up the Leicestershire innings.Essex lost Nick Browne in negotiating 11 tricky overs at the end, bowled by McKay for 8. But Jaik Mickleburgh and nightwatchman Quinn saw them through to the close.

Journalist Furious With "Inexplicable" VAR Error In Arsenal Defeat

Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli was lucky to still be on the field after his challenge on Brighton & Hove Albion’s Kaoru Mitoma this afternoon, according to journalist Sam Pilger.

What did Martinelli do in Arsenal vs Brighton?

Arsenal knew that nothing but three points was good enough to stay in the title race, given that Manchester City recorded a comprehensive 3-0 victory against Everton to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table earlier today.

It was never going to be an easy game for the Gunners, with Brighton still vying to qualify for Europe, and Martinelli almost handed his side an immediate disadvantage, when he challenged for a ball in the air with Mitoma.

Football Daily’s Dougie Critchley claimed the winger’s elbow made contact with the Japan international, describing the Arsenal star’s challenge as “reckless and very dangerous”, but it went unpunished by referee Andy Madley and VAR.

Pilger also took to Twitter to take issue with the decision not to give the 21-year-old his marching orders, saying:

“I am speechless. That was a red card challenge from Arsenal’s Martinelli. He led with his arm and floored an opponent. And he wasn’t even booked! More inexplicable and spineless decisions from referees and VAR.”

Should Martinelli have been sent off?

It would not have been surprising if the Brazilian had been sent off, with Arsenal journalist Charles Watts also slamming the “awful officiating” from Madley, who chose not to even brandish at least a yellow card.

Watts was also critical of the decision not to punish Moises Caicedo for his challenge on the youngster later in the first half, which ultimately meant he had to be replaced by Leandro Trossard.

mikel-arteta-arsenal-transfer-declan-rice-charlie-patino-west-ham-blackpool

It was not the best day at the office for the referee, and while Martinelli – who only registered five touches – ultimately escaped punishment, he could’ve easily been sent off on another day, for what was a dangerous challenge, that there was absolutely no need to make.

With the game finishing 3-0 to Brighton after second-half goals from Julio Enciso, Deniz Undav and Pervis Estupinan, Man City now need just one more win to wrap up the Premier League title, but Mikel Arteta will still want his side to finish the season strongly, with a trip to Nottingham Forest up next.

Aston Villa Could Sign ‘Unplayable’ £250k-p/w Star

Aston Villa have been the talk of a number of transfer rumours already leading up to the summer, as the end of the 2022/23 campaign is in sight.

The season has been a revelation for the Midlands club, who have shown great progress since the arrival of Unai Emery in October.

The Spaniard has taken Villa from a team with little direction loitering around the bottom third of the table, to European hopefuls with one game to go.

With just 90 minutes remaining of this joyous campaign at Villa Park, the club will endeavour to make changes to the squad this summer, with a host of talent already linked with a potential move.

The latest news has suggested that a current Premier League star could switch from Manchester to Birmingham to join Emery’s budding squad

What’s the latest on Anthony Martial to Aston Villa?

As reported by FootballTransfers, Manchester United forward Anthony Martial could be on the move this summer and could be a potential option for a loan deal at Villa Park.

The report understands that Villa are “weighing up” whether to bring the Frenchman to the club on a year-long loan with an option-to-buy.

The speculation comes as United’s movements in the transfer window are expected to focus on a forward that could see the 27-year-old become out of favour at Old Trafford.

What could Anthony Martial bring to Aston Villa?

When Martial signed from Monaco in 2015 for £36m, there were many questions asked over the price tag that made the 19-year-old British football’s most expensive teenager.

Almost eight years later, the forward has made 296 appearances for the Red Devils, as well as contributing to 140 goals through 53 assists and scoring 87 himself – as per Transfermarkt.

United have seen a lot of change at the club since his arrival, with a host of managers attempting to implement their ideas on the squad, which has worked less favourably for the Frenchman.

Man United's Anthony Martial

The 27-year-old has found his squad position in jeopardy due to extended spells on the sidelines due to injury and lack of form, linking him to a move away from the club having made just ten starts this campaign.

Despite being out-of-favour at Old Trafford, the Massy-born forward could be a worthy introduction to Emery’s system, and a suited partner to Ollie Watkins to lead the line.

Described as “unplayable” by former United man Lee Sharpe on TalkSPORT, the £250k-per-week forward has all the attributes to be a supporting striker or a number nine, highlighted by his passing and finishing abilities.

The Frenchman ranks in the top 5% of players in his position in Europe’s top five leagues in terms of frequency of assists, recording 0.26 per 90 – as per FBref, and also in best 14% for successful take-ons, showing that he is a superb outlet in the final third.

When speaking to The Athletic in April, Emery spoke of his wishes to sign another forward to partner Watkins, giving Martial space to replenish his form and showcase his expertise that could benefit key areas of the squad through depth and individual performance.

With the English forward having become a revelation under the current boss, scoring 15 times this term, the idea of another rampant threat such as Martial joining him in the attacking third is a mouthwatering one.

United bringing in another forward could almost certainly see the Frenchman depart, and a potential loan deal would be a strong route for Villa who will be trialling change this summer ahead of the Spaniard’s first full season in charge.

A vintage Peter Trego century helped Somerset stay firmly on course for the Royal London Cup quarter-finals with a four-wicket South Group win over Middlesex at Taunton. The visitors posted 296 for 9 after losing the toss, Nick Gubbins making 89 off 78 balls, with four fours and three sixes, Paul Stirling 58 and James Fuller a rapid 42 not out. There were two wickets each for Trego and Roelof van der Merwe. In reply, Somerset reached 297 for 6 with an over to spare, Trego hitting nine fours and a six in his 104, while Lewis Gregory contributed 69 and van der Merwe 41. Ollie Rayner was the pick of the Middlesex attack with 2 for 40. The result put Somerset on nine points from six group games, while their opponents remain on six.Middlesex had been given a solid start by Stirling and Ryan Higgins, who took the total to 83 in the 18th over before Higgins, on 39, drove a catch to cover off Trego. Stirling moved to his half-century off 60 balls, with six fours, before being second man out in the 24th over, caught at deep cover off Trego, who strangely bowled only six overs for figures of 2 for 27.Gubbins hit the first six of the innings off Craig Overton in the 25th over, but Middlesex could never put a charge on against some accurate Somerset bowling. It was 143 for 3 in the 30th over when Eoin Morgan was caught at mid-on by Trego after top-edging a pull shot off Gregory and 173 for 4 when George Bailey drove a catch to cover off van der Merwe.By then Somerset had used eight different bowlers. Gubbins reached his half-century off 47 balls, with three fours and a six and shared a fifth-wicket stand of 58 with John Simpson, who was bowled for 27, looking to reverse sweep van der Merwe.James Franklin went quickly to Overton before Gubbins’ innings ended when he guided a Tim Groenewald full-toss straight to James Hildreth at short fine-leg. Fuller provided some late acceleration with successive sixes off Groenewald, but a couple of late run-outs left Middlesex short of the 300-mark.Somerset would have been happy at the halfway stage. But skipper Jim Allenby went for a duck to James Harris when they replied and Johann Myburgh, having looked in prime form moving to 22, had to retire hurt with a side injury.Mahela Jayawardene (28) helped Trego add 63 before being well caught one-handed above his head by Morgan at midwicket off Rayner, and it was 117 for 3 when Hildreth, on 9, tamely chipped a catch to midwicket off Higgins.Trego reached a 53-ball half-century, with seven fours, against a Middlesex attack deprived of Fuller because of a side strain. Gregory provided excellent support in a fourth-wicket partnership of 86 in 15 overs and the hosts looked well placed when 35-year-old Trego moved confidently to three figures off 106 balls in the 36th over.He was bowled, advancing down the track to Rayner. But Gregory and van der Merwe were both dropped in the 41st over, bowled by Harris, Morgan and Tim Murtagh the culprits. They proved expensive errors as Gregory reached his half-century off 64 balls, with three fours, and the pair took their side to the verge of victory with a stand of 71 in 8.5 overs before both fell in the closing overs. Josh Davey and Craig Overton completed the job.

Arsenal Could Sign "The Best" £35m Xhaka Upgrade

Arsenal may well be set to lose a fan favourite or two this summer, but they are wasting no time in sorting out a replacement.

What's the latest on Orkun Kokcu to Arsenal?

That's according to the Portuguese outlet Record (via Sport Witness), which details Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar's interest in Feyenoord's outstanding skipper Orkun Kokcu.

The Turkish international has enjoyed a standout year in the engine room of the title winners, having ended Ajax's Eredivisie monopoly in sensational fashion. His midfield exploits have proven key, unsurprisingly attracting interest from some European heavyweights.

Whilst the €40m (£35m) price tag is said to have put off Benfica, the Gunners remain in the race alongside Liverpool and Sevilla.

Given Granit Xhaka seems to be inching closer to an exit, this could represent a fine piece of business, to bid farewell to an ageing star in favour of one with a sparkling future ahead.

How good is Orkun Kokcu?

The Swiss international has earned such widespread praise for his somewhat surprisingly creative role this term, and this adulation could be easily translated onto their new potential midfield general, who too boasts just as much pedigree in front of goal as he does at dictating the play.

Xhaka scored five and assisted seven in the league as his side narrowly missed out on top spot, whilst Kokcu instead boasts 12 goals and five assists in all competitions on his way to the title.

This potency is married with a tireless grit, as he wins possession back once and makes 1.1 tackles per game too, meriting his 7.47 average rating. It remains impossible to look past his astounding 2.7 key passes per game too alongside an 85% pass accuracy, further outlining his level as well above this division, via Sofascore.

For all his benefits, the departing 30-year-old simply cannot compete with these impressive figures. His 1.3 key passes per game feed into his admirable 7.01 average rating, yet it still remains nowhere near that of his possible successor, via Sofascore.

To further emphasise the gulf between them, whilst Arteta was praising Xhaka for being a "really important player" for the Gunners, Mohamed Sissoko has suggested that the 22-year-old is instead "the best in his league".

granit-xhaka-arsenal-transfer

The former Juventus midfield would continue, likening him to some of the greatest midfielders of this generation: "(Luka) Modric. For me, (Kokcu) has the same quality of play. He has the potential to reach his level."

Such lofty flattery only reinforces Kokcu's position as an upgrade on their current engine room stalwart, who has admittedly done well to revive a career on north London that seemed dead and buried after his altercation with the fanbase many years ago.

However, his triumphant exit could be quickly forgotten, should Edu swoop to secure such a capable replacement with immediacy.
