Aston Villa: Emery Could Ditch Chambers In Move For "Top" £4m Sensation

Aston Villa head into the Premier League campaign full of confidence. Not only have they got European football to look forward to this term, but manager Unai Emery has significantly bolstered his team with smart, forward-thinking additions.

Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby and Youri Tielemans will all strengthen Villa’s first team having arrived this summer, giving them the required boost in quality which could see them follow in the footsteps of West Ham United and win the Europa Conference League.

The Spaniard won't be done with his transfer business, however, as the Midlands outfit have been linked with Marc Pubill.

Who is Marc Pubill?

According to reports in Spain, Villa are showing an interest in the Levante right-back and are currently ‘in talks’ with regard to a potential move this summer.

The 20-year-old is valued at €5m (£4m) by the second-tier side and with UD Almeria also keeping tabs on the defender, Emery could face a battle to secure his signature.

The prospect of playing European football should be a major incentive, alongside developing in one of the best leagues in the world.

Does Calum Chambers have a future at Aston Villa?

Since joining the Villa Park side in January 2022 from Arsenal, Chambers has played just 28 matches, hardly justifying the £50k-per-week that he is currently earning.

Indeed, last term, the Englishman started just five matches, with three of those starts coming under Emery, and it’s evident that his future appears bleak.

Across the whole Villa squad, Chambers ranked in a lowly 14th position for tackles per game (0.6) while finishing in 12th spot for interceptions (0.5) and 11th for clearances (0.7) per game, suggesting that even when he did get a chance, his performances were lacking any sort of substance.

Pubill may not be the finished article, but he could certainly be a better choice than Chambers to fill in at right-back whenever Matty Cash is injured or needs to be rested due to the hectic schedule.

The youngster managed to gain some experience in La Liga during the 2021/22 season, playing 11 games for Levante, yet it was last term when he really nailed down a spot in their defence.

Calum Chambers

Journalist Mario Jimenez once dubbed Pubill as a “top right-back” recently, and he showcased his defensive attributes during 2022/23.

The Spaniard ranked fourth in the squad for tackles per game (1.6) while also winning a staggering 75% of his aerial duels – 1.9 per game – and this could certainly give Emery plenty of food for thought.

The young sensation clearly has a bright future in the game and his 0.5 key passes per game figure would have ranked him as the third-best Villa defender across that metric last season, proving that he also has a forward-thinking mindset.

With squad depth a key factor in any success Villa may achieve next season, adding a player such as Pubill, who is young, talented, and hungry to learn, could be a wise investment by Emery.

It could also give him the licence to ditch Chambers in the process, allowing the 20-year-old to become the understudy to Cash.

No effort to exclude Ford from team matters, says Gurusinha

Sri Lanka’s cricket manager defends his role as a liaison between team management and the board

Graham Ford had disagreed with the appointment of Asanka Gurusinha as Sri Lanka’s cricket manager “from the start”, but there was no effort to exclude Ford from team matters, and no undue interference in Ford’s role by the board, Gurusinha has said in an interview with ESPNcricinfo. Gurusinha also said his newly formed role does not unduly overlap with that of a head coach.Ford resigned in June, following what he felt were intrusions into what ought to have been his sphere of influence. Ford met with board officials in Colombo upon his return from the Champions Trophy. Having been told on that occasion that he would have to report to Gurusinha, he then declined to continue.”Graham, from the start, probably didn’t agree with my role,” Gurusinha said. “He thought I was interfering a lot more. I thought I wasn’t. We did discuss it a lot. I am not sure what he discussed with the SLC president or anything like that. My role was always as a team manager and I will give certain ideas.”There are reports of several instances where Gurusinha and Ford differed during the Champions Trophy, including in the area of selection. As part of his duties as cricket manager, Gurusinha is also the selector on tour. But that is a power that he does not wield with unwarranted force, said Gurusinha.”At the end of the day, I do make the decision on the team – on the final XI. That decision is mine. But in my five months, I’ve never gone against the captain’s decision. With the head coach – I wouldn’t say I always agree with everything. But I look at the fact that the captain goes to the middle with the team, not me. I have always given the team that the captain wanted. During the Champions Trophy, the final XI, even on things that I didn’t agree, I always went with Angelo Mathews’ final decision. He has to go to the middle.”Allegations have also arisen that Ford was systematically pushed out by Gurusinha, who is claimed to have excluded Ford from team meetings, making Ford feel redundant. Gurusinha denied this.”There was nothing like that happening. We didn’t have a single meeting without Graham Ford, if it was cricket-related. If it was administration- or security-related, we won’t get Ford into those meetings. But anything with cricket or cricket selection, Graham was always there. Even though Graham is not a selector in SLC’s selection policy, I always had him there. We always had the vice-captain there as well. It was a team that discussed everything, and I never excluded Graham.”Gurusinha described his role as one of coordinating with the head coach, the selectors, the high-performance centre, the players, and SLC. As such, he said he could act as a buffer between the coach and SLC’s administrators, who have a long history of intruding into team matters.”It’s important that you’re clear with administrators and say: ‘This is not part of your position. This is part of mine. Let me do it and trust me. I do respect SLC’s policies and all of that – absolutely. But when it comes to decision-making, I always do everything within my powers.”But I haven’t come across anything like that [intrusions by administrators]. I also have good relationships with SLC officials. And they do respect me for who I am.”The full interview with Asanka Gurusinha will be published on July 29

Liverpool Could Sign "Dominant" £25m Gem Who’s Better Than Thuram

Liverpool are interested in signing Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch this summer as Jurgen Klopp continues to reassemble his midfield after a testing and unsuccessful season.

What's the latest on Ryan Gravenberch to Liverpool?

That's according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Liverpool "really, really like" Gravenberch, who is "open to the idea" of transferring to the Anfield side.

The Dutchman only joined the German Bundesliga champions from Ajax for a deal rising to £20m one year ago, but could already be on the move after playing second fiddle to his positional peers last term.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

Should Klopp wish to secure Gravenberch's signature, he would likely have to pay £25m, according to some reports, though given the current state of affairs on the transfer market, this could prove to be a shrewd piece of business.

How good is Ryan Gravenberch?

It hasn't quite gone to plan for Gravenberch since departing his homeland a prodigy and expecting to wedge his way into a prominent role with Die Roten.

The 21-year-old only started three times in the Bundesliga and twice in the Champions League, and while he is still young and would not have expected to have started every match for such an imperious outfit thronged with world-class talent, his lack of match action has left the road to Liverpool looking a tantalising proposition.

The 11-cap Netherlands international demonstrated his ability with Ajax, the season prior, recording an average Sofascore rating of 7.17 in the Eredivisie, scoring two goals and supplying five assists from 30 matches, averaging 1.1 key passes per game and completing 86% of his total passes, making 1.6 tackles per match and succeeding with 68% of his dribbles.

And as per FBref, despite his peripheral role at the Allianz Arena, Gravenberch ranks among the top 8% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 18% for progressive passes, the top 20% for successful take-ons and the top 24% for tackles per 90.

While such metrics are not remarkable, they illustrate his expansive skill set and highlight just how much of a refined midfielder he could grow into as he ages and finds his feet on the major stage; Liverpool will be looking to take advantage of this and build Gravenberch into the player that former Ajax forward Wim Kieft knows he can become, having hailed him his nation's "greatest talent."

khephren-thuram-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

FBref also lists Reds target Khephren Thuram as a comparable player to Gravenberch, and Klopp if it does boil down to choosing between the pair to complete Liverpool's midfield – after a deal for Southampton's defensive midfielder Romeo Lavia has been concluded, as is the desire – then the Liverpool boss might be wise to push for the Dutchman.

Indeed, OGC Nice's Thuram has impressed in his homeland, with the 22-year-old having scored two goals and supplied eight assists from 48 matches across all competitions last season, hailed as a "monster" by writer Sam McGuire.

The Les Aiglons talent ranks among the top 24% of positional peers for assists, the top 5% for progressive carries, the top 9% for successful take-ons and the top 27% for interceptions per 90, and while he is a top-class ball-carrier, Gravenberch arguably boasts the more rounded arsenal to complement Liverpool's system.

Indeed, Gravenberch could become a "dominant" phenom – as he has been hailed by former youth coach Brian Tevreden (who also compared him to a prime Paul Pogba) – on English soil in the future, and with Klopp looking to craft a new-look midfield to charge the engine for years to come, the Bayern starlet is the man to sign.

Supreme Court issues notice to BCCI office bearers

The CoA has been directed to draft the new BCCI constitution as per the approved Lodha Committee recommendations

Nagraj Gollapudi23-Aug-2017

PTI

The Supreme Court has issued notices to and summoned three BCCI office bearers – CK Khanna (BCCI’s acting president), Amitabh Choudhary (acting secretary) and Anirudh Chaudhry (treasurer) – for the next hearing on September 19, asking them to explain why they have failed to implement the Lodha Committee recommendations. The court was responding to the latest status report filed by the Committee of Administrators (CoA), in which the committee said that there was a “need to direct” all three office bearers to “forthwith cease and desist” from continuing in the BCCI till fresh elections were held. The CoA had also asked the court to order that the committee, along with the BCCI’s professional management led by its chief executive officer Rahul Johri, take complete charge of the board in the interim. But the court deferred a decision on that request, effectively meaning Khanna, Choudhary and Chaudhry can continue in their posts. The court’s pronouncement cannot be misread as a relief to the office bearers, however. Khanna, Choudhary and Chaudhry had given written undertakings to the court in January saying they would ensure the BCCI implemented the reforms. Those undertakings were sought by the court after it sacked Anurag Thakur and Ajay Shirke, the BCCI president and secretary, for failing to honour their written submissions where they had stated the board would implement the reforms. On Wednesday, the court also directed the two-member CoA panel (comprising Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji) to draft the new BCCI constitution as per the approved reforms, barring the three it said it would revisit during the previous hearing on July 24. Back then, the court passed an interim order asking the BCCI to implement the reforms as far as “practicable” so that the “‘gentleman’s game’ remains nearly perfect”. The court had also said that it was willing to reopen debate over some of the reforms “pertaining to membership, number of members of the selection committee, concept of associate membership, etc”.Two days later, at a special general meeting (SGM), the BCCI members – the state associations – “unanimously” agreed to implement all but five of the reforms approved by the court in its original judgement of July 18 last year. Furious, the CoA said that the BCCI had handpicked from reforms that formed the “fundamental core” of the recommendations that were approved by the court originally. The five broad reforms the BCCI wants the court reconsider comprise: membership status which includes the one-state-one-vote reform, disqualification of office bearers, ministers and government officials based on eligibility criteria such as the age cap, tenure and cooling-off period, the strength of the Apex Council – which replaces the existing working committee – the division of powers between the office bearers and the professional management, and strength of the national selection committee. Those objections, the CoA noted in the status report, were “nothing short of gross abuse/contempt”. On Wednesday, Gopal Subramanium, the amicus curiae in the case, echoed the sentiment. “The objections to the recommendations expressed in the meeting (SGM) seeks to erode fundamental aspects of Lodha Committee recommendations and the principal judgement,” Subramanium said in a 23-page submission in the court. “It was clear that anything that affected the vested interests of the concerned individuals was not acceptable to the office bearers of BCCI and the state associations.”In his expansive note, Subraminum outlined the “systematic manner” in which the BCCI office bearers and state associations had “repeatedly” played the obstructionist role in not implementing the reforms. In its principal judgement of July 18 last year the court had given the BCCI a maximum of six months to implement the approved reforms. “Over a year has since passed,” Subramaniam said. “The conduct of the stakeholders has throughout been that of veiled non-cooperation.”He also said that the CoA, having realised the “portrayal of the purported intention” of the office bearers at both BCCI and state associations was merely a “farce”, was forced to request “sweeping directions” from the court including removal of board’s top three administrators – Khanna, Choudhary and Chaudhry.Subramanium agreed with the CoA that if “stringent” steps were not taken, the court’s principal order was in danger of staying as a dead letter. “The fact that two august Committees have conveyed considerable difficulties in resolving the deadlocks evidences the resoluteness of all involved to make a mockery of Justice and Rule of Law. Permitting such a course of action will be detrimental to the public perception of the sanctity attached to the judgements rendered by this Honourable Court.”This Honourable Court has been magnanimous in accommodating the grievances of all parties to ensure that justice is done. However, all efforts have been designedly defeated with the sole intention to avoid implementation of the judgement by triggering all fathomable objections.”

Rangers Could Sign New Todd Cantwell At Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers got their first victory of the 2023/24 Premiership campaign at the weekend, defeating Livingston 4-0 at Ibrox.

With a vital Champions League qualifier to come on Tuesday evening, it was a step in the right direction and Michael Beale will be turning his attention to not only securing a win but also bolstering his squad.

Who could Rangers sign this summer?

According to Bristol Live, the Light Blues are showing interest in a centre-back heading into the final few weeks of the transfer window.

That player happens to be Zak Vyner. Indeed, he has entered into the final year of his current contract and while ‘fresh terms’ were offered earlier this year, the defender has yet to sign them, fuelling talk of a potential exit in the coming weeks as it represents the last chance Bristol City have of securing a fee for him.

Read the latest Rangers transfer news HERE…

Beale will face competition from Championship side Southampton, yet the lure of European football and the chance to win trophies should be more than enough incentive for the 26-year-old to choose Ibrox over St Mary’s.

Who is Zak Vyner?

The Gers have so far been linked with moves for Jake Cooper and Harry Souttar as Beale aims to bring in another defender, and Vyner is the latest name touted with a move.

By signing a player from an EFL club, the Ibrox side could certainly repeat their Todd Cantwell masterclass before the end of the window.

Todd Cantwell

The former Norwich City starlet arrived from the Championship in January and although he was once linked with a move to Aston Villa just two years ago, his form had dipped in the second tier.

Under Beale’s leadership, however, the 25-year-old was revitalised upon arriving in Glasgow. He registered 11 goal contributions across 20 games – six goals and five assists – while also ranking third for overall rating (7.36) and fourth for successful dribbles per game (1.5), demonstrating how much of a positive influence he had by moving north of the border.

Vyner has already experienced Scottish football, spending a brief spell on loan at Aberdeen during the 2019/20 season and he has grown into a solid centre-back who could give Beale another option at the heart of the defence.

The 5 foot 10 gem averaged 1.6 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game last season in the Championship and these statistics would have ranked him seventh and first in the Rangers squad respectively.

He also offered a decent attacking threat, creating three big chances, which would have placed him joint-second across the defenders at Rangers while he registered four goal contributions, again, ranking him joint-second compared to the centre-backs at the Glasgow side.

It’s evident he could fit in well, especially with these statistics and his manager, Nigel Pearson, lauded him last term, saying: “Zak’s a good player, he’s come through the academy, and he’s probably suffered from being versatile. He’s matured this season there’s been more reliability.

“He’s gained experience and developed through the players that he’s played alongside as well so those things together are all a part of a player’s development. Even players in their 30s can develop and improve themselves if they’ve got an open mind.”

With the chance to secure his signature for a knockdown fee, Beale could bring a player who is arguably heading into his peak years to the club for a pittance, replicating the successful Cantwell deal in the process.

It would be a shrewd investment, no doubt about it.

A Ranji Trophy with international flavour and increased pressure

R Ashwin, M Vijay, and Cheteshwar Pujara will be in action, but because of that teams may well push some fringe players into the sidelines

Shashank Kishore05-Oct-20175:10

Runorder: Are there too many tweaks to the Ranji Trophy?

Two seasons ago, Amit Mishra was India’s preferred spin partner to R Ashwin in Tests. Ravindra Jadeja had been dropped across formats, his bowling lacking its usual bite following a shoulder surgery. He could have enjoyed time off with his horses at his farm in Jamnagar, but asked to be included in Saurashtra’s Ranji Trophy squad. On pitches tailor-made to suit the team’s strengths, Jadeja picked up six consecutive five-fors – apart from scores of 91 and 58 – to give Saurashtra a head start. At the end of the season, they had made their second final, and Jadeja had nailed his place in the Test squad after tormenting South Africa at home.Ranji Trophy 2017-18

Format: Top two from each group qualify for the quarter-finals
Group A: Assam, Delhi, Hyderabad, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Railways, Uttar Pradesh
Group B: Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Team Rajasthan, Saurashtra
Group C: Andhra Pradesh, Baroda, Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Tripura
Group D: Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Services, Vidarbha
Points: Seven for a 10-wicket or innings victory, six for an outright, three for a draw with first-innings lead, one for a draw.
Final: December 29-January 2

While he is a Test regular, exclusion from India’s limited-overs XI is likely to hurt, if his cryptic posts on social media are anything to go by. The 84th Ranji Trophy season, beginning Friday, could be Jadeja’s chance to channel those frustrations and get some match practice before the Sri Lanka series in November. While he is out of their tournament opener in Lahli, where he could have got a taste of the conditions India are likely to face in South Africa in 2018, his participation from the second round could benefit both him and Saurashtra.Jadeja is just one of many India internationals adding a layer of excitement to this Ranji season. R Ashwin and M Vijay will turn up for Tamil Nadu. Cheteshwar Pujara will lead Saurashtra in the first round following Jaydev Shah’s absence. Wriddhiman Saha and Mohammed Shami will feature for Bengal. Ishant Sharma, pace spearhead not too long ago, could play four straight games for Delhi, if not more, and prove himself not only as a bowler, but also as captain.Ashwin and Pujara are coming off a hectic stint in county cricket. Vijay, who has not played for India since March 2017, has another opportunity to rate his match fitness. A wrist injury had forced him out of the Sri Lanka tour, but since then he has played the Duleep Trophy and will welcome the chance for more time in the middle. Among the bowlers, Shami will want to go through the rigours of days cricket again so that he can put his name up for the Tests against Sri Lanka in November. While the inclusion of big names is a positive, it leaves fringe players who may have otherwise been picked fewer games to impress. They had, potentially, eight straight matches last year – those in Group C got nine. But this time, with teams split between four groups, each one will play only six games in the league phase. This is a direct consequence of the BCCI’s decision to include an extra recovery day to the existing three-day window, following suggestions put forward at the captains’ and coaches’ conclave earlier this year.Another factor putting the onus directly on the players to better their performance is the decision to play home and away again. The neutral venues experiment of 2016-17 has been abandoned after the logistics of arranging travel and accommodation for 27 teams turned out to be a nightmare. Teams often traveled for 24 hours, sometimes more, via connecting flights and bus journeys, and were left exhausted. And while it was hectic for some teams, it was relatively easy on the others.Gujarat, the eventual champions for example, had all their games in and around Delhi for the first five rounds. One trip down to Pune was followed by three games in Karnataka to complete their league phase. It may not have been the deciding factor in their triumph, but it certainly was an advantage. Jharkhand clocked up more miles in just one trip from Thiruvananthapuram to Agartala with stopovers in Chennai and Kolkata. Poor training facilities and underprepared surfaces were also cited at many venues. As a senior player put it, host associations were “simply not interested” because they had nothing to gain. The home-and-away format has had its issues as well, such as teams preparing surfaces that blatantly suited their strengths, but the BCCI has taken precautions against it by bringing in neutral curators for the 2017-18 season. Whether this results in a more aggressive brand of cricket to ensure teams earn points early on before easing the pressure in the second half remains to be seen. After all, with fewer matches, teams who start poorly won’t have much wiggle room for comebacks. There is plenty of incentive to do well in this Ranji Trophy. With the India A coach Rahul Dravid focused on expanding the talent pool, he will keep an eye on the best bowlers and batsmen that are coming through. Then, if they make it to the A team, which tours countries alongside the senior team, the step up to international cricket can happen very quickly. But the benchmarks they are judged against are bound to change. With fewer games, VVS Laxman’s record of most runs in a Ranji season (1415), which Priyank Panchal came close to breaking (1310) last season, is unlikely to be touched. And the prospect of a bowler picking up 50-plus wickets, like Shahbaz Nadeem has done over the last two seasons, has become distant. So while the travel may not make players sweat, their yo-yo tests will, as they prepare for what could be another intriguing season. Will there be another Gujarat-like fairy tale? We’ll find out in the first week of 2018.
