Leeds: Farke signing who lost possession 21x could actually be his new weapon

Leeds United recovered from their grim weekend defeat to Southampton with a narrow victory over Queen's Park Rangers on Wednesday evening, with the Yorkshire giants having moved back up to sixth amid what has been a solid, albeit unspectacular return to life in the Championship.

While perhaps not at their free-flowing best last night, the Whites took control of proceedings early on following a close-range effort from Crysencio Summerville, with the visitors rarely looking like getting back into the game, particularly with experienced goalkeeper Asmir Begovic seeing red at the death.

Manager Daniel Farke will likely be expecting more from his side moving forward – particularly in the attacking ranks – although one notable positive was the performance of summer signing, Jaidon Anthony, who sparkled down the left flank.

How did Jaidon Anthony perform vs QPR?

With Wilfried Gnonto currently sidelined with injury, Farke opted to hand the on-loan Bournemouth man a first start for the club yesterday, with the 23-year-old taking the place of Daniel James in that wide berth.

While the Englishman was not able to bolster his goal tally, having previously netted from the bench against Watford, he did show flashes of his quality before being withdrawn on the hour mark, with Leeds Live's Beren Cross writing that the new man 'should keep his place for the weekend'.

As Cross also noted, the fleet-footed wideman was 'bright and went past defenders fairly regularly', with that evidenced by the fact that he attempted seven dribbles on the day as a marker of his desire to be a real outlet for the Elland Road outfit.

Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Graham Smyth was also effusive in his praise for the London-born dynamo, writing that he 'worked hard, produced some sharp stuff and tried to link up with Byram and Rutter', having more than taken his chance in place of James.

That's not to suggest that Anthony's performance was entirely perfect, however, as he lost 13 of his 17 total duels, was dribbled past on three occasions and squandered possession 21 times – albeit with that latter metric somewhat misleading for any creative, attacking asset.

There is seemingly a need for the temporary addition to work on his 'end product' – as Cross suggested – yet Farke could have potentially found a new weapon in the 6 foot sensation.

How good is Jaidon Anthony?

The one-time Weymouth loanee was somewhat ruthlessly cast aside by his parent club this summer, with the Cherries opting to snap up a replacement in the form of Luis Sinisterra, who moved in the opposite direction.

That departure from the Vitality Stadium had come despite Anthony having previously been crucial in the club's promotion push in 2021/22, scoring eight times and registering six assists in the league under Scott Parker.

Speaking at the time, the former Fulham and Club Brugge boss heaped praise on the emerging talent for his unsung work both in and out of possession: “Jaidon Anthony’s a player that goes under the radar massively, what he does for this team is nothing short of incredible at times.

Bournemouth winger Jaidon Anthony.

“In possession, we see his qualities, his calmness, his silkiness when he makes good decisions but the stuff that goes unnoticed is his defensive side, what he brings to this team."

Even after making the step up to the Premier League last term, the former Arsenal academy asset did still manage to score three times in 30 league appearances as the south coast side staved off relegation, further proving just what a weapon he can be in the final third.

Now back in the second tier, Anthony has the chance to make a name for himself by spearheading Leeds' push for promotion, with it fair to say that the early signs have certainly been promising.

Pakistan's team effort builds hefty lead as England pay for mistakes

England missed crucial chances on the second day to leave themselves well behind in the opening Test

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando25-May-2018

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDon’t act too surprised, but Pakistan have played their second consecutive day of consistent, sober, intelligent cricket. For their reward, they have a 166-run lead with two wickets in hand – though one of those batsmen may not return due to injury.England, meanwhile, were shabby on occasion, missing four catches in the day – two in the space of four balls – and missing one tough run out chance. Their bowlers did not succeed going full as Pakistan had, perhaps because the pitch has settled slightly, but also because Pakistan were more skillful on day one.Ben Stokes did lead one resurgence either side of tea, finding success with a series of brutish bouncers. But then the lower order stood firm for Pakistan. They quickly pushed the lead beyond 150. Nos. 9 and 11 even saw out 4.1 overs before stumps.Three partnerships, involving six different batsmen, built this innings. Up the top were the overnight pair, Haris Sohail and Azhar Ali. Adding a 37 together on the second morning, they brought up their partnership tally to 75, withstanding the worst of England’s swing bowling.Haris fell for 39, edging Mark Wood behind. Azhar continued to his half-century, having batted a little more positively in this session, after having scored only 18 off 72 the previous day. He was out lbw, to a seaming delivery from James Anderson. In the afternoon, Asad Shafiq and Babar Azam – two men in need of runs for different reasons – took control of the game, and produced Pakistan’s best partnership, amounting to 84.Shafiq, once an excellent No.6 batsman, has seen his average retreat over the past 18 months when he has more often been asked to bat at No. 4. Babar, a blinding limited-overs talent, is yet to crack the Test format, averaging less than 25 before this match.Together, though, the quelled the last of the swing England were able to generate, saw through one short-ball burst from Mark Wood, and batted positively against Dom Bess, the 20-year-old debutant offspinner. Babar’s innings contained some of the regality that has made him a short-format force: the back-foot punches and cover drives in particular were in alluring flow. Shafiq, a little less flash, but more assured at the crease, strode purposefully along. They both made smart fifties. Shafiq was out to a snorting Stokes bouncer on 59, able only to spasm evasively at a ball that was hunting his throat, the resultant catch off the shoulder of the bat floating to the cordon. Babar had moved to 69 when he too was victim to a Stokes bouncer, but in different fashion – the ball hit the bony part of his unprotected forearm as he attempted to duck beneath it. He went off the field, apparently unable to hold the bat, but did not go for an x-ray while play was on.Stokes had also had Sarfraz Ahmed caught at fine leg, hooking irresponsibly just before tea to prompt a frustrated shaking of the head from coach Mickey Arthur on the balcony. But although three batsmen had fallen to stokes in relatively quick succession, a young, inexperienced lower order pair put on Pakistan’s third excellent stand of the day.Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf didn’t just resist England; in fact, they actively attacked. Their 72 runs together came off 92 balls. This was all the more impressive for having come against a mostly-new ball – England’s seamers getting less seam movement this evening, than they had on day one.Anderson had success late in the day, dismissing Ashraf and later Hasan Ali, while another sharp Stokes bouncer had Shadab caught down the leg side for 59. But England’s bowlers will largely be disappointed at having allowed the lead to swell this much. The pitch is flattening out gradually, but they were especially innocuous for stretches. Bess, bowling offbreaks on a still-green surface is yet to impose himself on the game too – his 17 overs have gone for 59 runs – no first Test wicket so far.

Chelsea could sign a "future Ballon d’Or winner" worth £80m

Chelsea hadn't messed around this summer. With the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, a world-class manager, and a whole host of talent acquired to their squad, it felt like the Blues were heading back to their former best.

Yet, after breaking the bank on the likes of Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo, to name a few, they currently find themselves in an unsatisfactory mid-table position with three defeats from their opening eight matches.

While Pochettino will be given time to mould the squad how he wants it, patience on their current stars could wear thin if significant ground hasn't been made on the Champions League places come January, which could lead to more mass spending.

Unsurprisingly, a whole host of stars have already been touted with a winter move to Stamford Bridge, and one of Europe's brightest young talents, Jamal Musiala, is the latest name to be linked.

Are Chelsea interested in Jamal Musiala?

A graduate of Chelsea's youth academy, who departed the club for Bayern Munich aged 16, would make a huge U-turn on his career if he was to return to Stamford Bridge.

According to 90min, Premier League clubs are showing an interest in Musiala, including Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea.

The report details that Bayern remain confident of tying the 20-year-old down to a long-term contract, however, with several clubs enquiring about his availability, a potential bidding war could ensue.

Currently valued at €92.3m (£80m) according to Football Transfers and with another three years left on his contract, the Blues will need to splash the cash in order to lure him to west London, either in January or next summer.

What would Jamal Musiala bring to Chelsea?

One of Chelsea's most fateful mistakes was allowing Musiala to depart for Bayern in 2019 after failing to convince the youngster to commit his future to the London club.

All will be forgiven, however, if the Blues manage to pull off a sensational move to prise the youngster away from Germany and back to England.

Jamal Musiala

The attacking midfield sensation, who has been nominated for the prestigious Golden Boy Award, is the shining light of a German side crying out for a rebuild and an unwavering cog of Bayern's merciless winning machine.

Combining his electric pace and remarkable dribbling to a devastating effect, the youngster has been compared to the great Lionel Messi for how he carries the ball in perpetual motion, breezing past defenders like the ball is stuck to his feet and supplying a relentless end product to match.

With an astonishing 12 goals and 13 assists in 33 Bundesliga matches last term, Musiala showcased why the footballing world is salivating over his talents, seamlessly slotting into pockets of space and appearing to be the perfect heir to Muller's throne.

Lauded as a "future Ballon d'Or" winner by teammate Alphonso Davies for how he's dominated on the world stage at just 20-years-old, Musiala has shown that his potential is limitless.

The youngster's former coach, Andre Martin, reinforced the above back in 2021, saying: "Technically outstanding, very skillful, and a player who can score all types of goals, inside and outside the box. And he's a great dribbler and likes to take players on, as he did against Schalke. He later became a No.10 and has become as much of a creator as a goalscorer."

The description of his qualities suggests that Chelsea must reverse the mistake they made four years ago and go all out to sign one of the best young talents on the planet.

Delegada Martha Rocha: Primeiro, porque amo minha cidade. Eu sempre trabalhei no setor público, servindo à população do Rio e atenta à qualidade desse atendimento.

L!: Como a senhora avalia a gestão do legado olímpico?

Ídolo no esporte: Fernandão do Vôlei.

Heather Knight: Time for England to move on from World Cup win

The challenge as England begin their home season with a three-ODI series against South Africa, is how best to start looking forward again

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jun-2018England’s agenda-setting Women’s World Cup triumph is 11 months in the past but captain Heather Knight admits everything still feels “quite fresh”, so often have the team’s exploits been recounted. The challenge as they begin their home season with a three-ODI series against South Africa, is how best to start looking forward again and focus on the challenges ahead.Having ascended to No. 1 in the ICC rankings after lifting the World Cup, England’s winter programme did not go quite so smoothly. They were unable to regain the Ashes down under – despite drawing 8-8 in the multi-format points system – were beaten again by Australia in the T20 tri-series final in India, and then suffered an ODI series defeat to India, albeit in unfamiliar conditions.Knight’s team will take on South Africa and New Zealand this summer, with a T20 tri-series between ODI commitments, before heading to the Caribbean later in the year for the Women’s World T20. She admitted that, while it had been hard to get motivated again after their World Cup triumph, it was important that England dealt with the pressure of being one of the fancied teams.”We’ve had the chance to relive the World Cup and talk about it a lot since then, it still feels quite fresh – but the first game of the international season at home is always really exciting for the team,” Knight told ESPNcricinfo. “For us it’s about moving on from the World Cup, we take a lot of confidence from it but it’s about the next stage of development for this team, how we can keep winning, keep pushing forward and keep being successful.”I think being world champions and going to world No. 1, there’s obviously added pressure, added expectation to perform well and to stay there and keep doing well.”We went to the Ashes at the end of last year off after the World Cup and drew, which meant that we obviously didn’t bring the trophy back. But you feel the added pressure as world champions, you become the hunted and not the hunter and the added pressure that comes with that. Once you reach your goal you have to reassess and decide on the next big thing. And that can be quite hard; trying to motivate the team.”The encounter with South Africa, which begins at New Road on Saturday, provides another reason to hark back to the World Cup. England prevailed by two wickets in the last over of their semi-final – Anya Shrubsole the hero with the bat – and Knight expects another test of how her side have progressed.Heather Knight shapes up to play a reverse sweep•Getty Images

“I remember being very nervous when I was watching, it was a quite a thriller at Bristol; we had a really good group game against them, a really high-scoring one,” she said. “They’re going to be a very good side the last time we played them was a good game, Anya Shrubsole hitting those winning runs right at the end to get us through to the final. We expect them to improve in that 11 months, as I hope we have as well.”Last month, England won in the Sporting Role Model team category at the Women’s Sport Trust ‘Be a Game Changer’ awards in London, another sign that the spotlight remains on. Their success has also resulted in pay rise from the ECB, announced on Friday.”It’s a really exciting time to be a female cricketer and the girls’ profiles have raised a lot since that win,” Knight said. “But they know that there’s added responsibility now too to keep pushing the game forward.”That is best done on the field, and the World T20 looms as a significant goal. It was at the 2016 tournament in India that England’s issues crystallised: an anguished, five-run semi-final defeat to Australia giving the team’s coach, Mark Robinson, justification for making sweeping changes. Knight subsequently replaced Charlotte Edwards as captain, and she said that lifting the T20 trophy later this year would be a sign of how far the team had come.”We want to keep getting better, keeping winning,” Knight said. “We’ve got two big series this summer and the T20 World Cup in November, which is a big carrot for us, a lot of T20 preparation this year. Hopefully we can go to the Caribbean and be in a good place to win another trophy.”We talk a lot as a side about that semi-final at Delhi, and how it was the making of us as a team. As was our game at Worcester two years ago, that was the real emergence of the side, the exciting cricket we played, scoring a world-record 50-over score for England and that was the start for this side. So that World T20 is a big carrot for us and that would be a lovely circle from that semi-final at Delhi.”
