Free transfer: Newcastle eyeing move for "elite" Champions League winner

Newcastle United could soon lock horns with a number of Premier League rivals for the signing of an "elite player", according to an exciting new transfer report.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have been hit hard by the news that Sandro Tonali is set to be banned for 10 months from football, having breached betting rules during his spell at Serie A giants AC Milan. Having arrived as a huge signing for the club during the summer transfer window, the Italian now won't feature again this season, not making his return until early in the 2024/25 campaign.

It seems clear that Eddie Howe will need to bring in a top-quality midfielder in January, in order to make up for the loss of Tonali, with the Magpies' results arguably suffering a little since the news broke, following a 2-2 draw away to Wolves on Saturday evening.

Howe's side have been linked with various players when it comes to replacing the 23-year-old, whether it be Kalvin Phillips, Ruben Neves or N'Golo Kante heading to Newcastle, to name just a few. Now, a world-renowned figure has also been thrown into the mix.

Newcastle want Toni Kroos

According to The Daily Star, Newcastle are one of the Premier League clubs eyeing a move for Toni Kroos, with the Real Madrid legend's future at the club currently up in the air:

"Real Madrid star Toni Kroos is being offered to the Premier League elite. The five-time Champions League winner is no longer a regular pick for the Spanish giants. Six of his 12 appearances this season have come from the bench.

"And with his current Real contract entering its final eight months, Kroos is available for a move – and keen to look elsewhere to bring the curtain down on his glittering career. Both Manchester clubs, Newcastle and Chelsea are among those in and around the top half of the table aware of the situation surrounding the German central midfielder, who turns 34 in January."

Kroos could be such an exciting signing by Newcastle in the January transfer window, should he leave Madrid at that point, with his pedigree as a footballer simply undeniable.

While he may now be 33 years of age, Kroos' statistics highlight what an astonishing career he has enjoyed, having won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, also winning 106 caps for them, and then tasting Champions League glory an incredible five times – four with Madrid and one with Bayern Munich.

The German may not quite be the footballer he used to be, in terms of covering ground and making such a huge impact on games, but he remains a top-class player who could be an inspired addition by Newcastle in the wake of Tonali's ban, being hailed as an "elite player" by journalist Henry Winter.

Kroos may still have a few years left in him at the top level, and with the legs of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sean Longstaff around him at Newcastle, he could run the show from deep with his ability on the ball and expertise in tight areas.

E Cuca valorizou e elogiou os 45 minutos finais do time.

Estou me recuperando, ainda tenho alguns passos a seguir.

Ben Stokes accused of lying to the jury and having an anger problem

The England allrounder was cross-examined as his trial for affray moved into its fifth day in Bristol

Ben Stokes has been accused of lying to a jury, having an anger management problem and failing to take responsibility for his actions on the fifth day of his trial in Bristol.Stokes, who is standing trial for affray alongside Ryan Ali, was also accused of exaggerating the extent of an argument he witnessed “in an attempt to justify your own violent behaviour”.Under cross-examination from Anna Midgley QC, acting for Ali, it was put to Stokes that he had “misrepresented” events in the early hours of September 25 and “just got the wrong end of the stick” after coming across four men in the street. In particular, Midgley suggested, Stokes had misunderstood the nature of the discussion between Ryan Ali, his friend Ryan Hale and two men, Kai Barry and William O’Connor.”You thought something untoward was being said to them about their sexuality, but you can’t remember a single word, can you?” she asked. “Won’t you consider that you have just got the wrong end of the stick?””I can’t recollect the direct words,” Stokes replied, “but I’m very clear the words used were of homophobic abuse.””You have over-exaggerated the exchange in an attempt to justify your own violent behaviour haven’t you?” Midgley asked. “You’ve misrepresented what happened, haven’t you?””No,” Stokes replied.Under cross-examination from Nicholas Corsellis QC, acting for the prosecution, it was put to Stokes that he had “really significant memory blackout” from the night because he was “really very drunk”.It was also put to Stokes that CCTV footage showed him flicking a cigarette butt at Mr O’Connor and that Stokes walked away from the Mbargo nightclub “angry” after a disagreement with the bouncer, Andrew Cunningham, who would not allow him to re-enter.”Are you hiding behind your lack of recollection because you carried out a retaliatory attack?” Corsellis asked.”No, all my actions were in self-defence,” Stokes replied.”You’re lying to the jury about the cigarette butt, aren’t you?” Corsellis continued. “You’re lying about mimicking and mocking Mr Barry and Mr O’Connor.”I’m not sure it [the butt] was still in my hand,” Stokes replied. “I hadn’t seen the footage… it looks like I’ve done something towards the area.””You have a problem with your anger, don’t you?” Corsellis asked.”No,” Stokes replied.”You’re trying to cover up your actions because you know you were angry with Mr Cunningham, aren’t you?” Corsellis asked. “The CCTV shows you being angry, doesn’t it?””No,” Stokes replied.Asked whether he was “looking down your nose” at Mr Cunningham, Stokes replied he “might just be looking at the night sky”. And when asked to whom he might be speaking, Stokes replied “God”.After more than two hours of cross-examination, an exhausted-looking Stokes returned to the dock, lent back in his chair, exhaled deeply and then held his head in hands. The court then heard a written statement from Nottinghamshire and England’s Jake Ball – and read by Stokes’ QC, Gordon Cole – which described Stokes as in “a good mood”. Ball had been out with Stokes that evening in September, but returned to the team hotel before the incident began.”He was in a good mood and really pleased to score runs and win the game,” Ball’s statement read. “It was business as usual. It wasn’t a wild night out.”Ben was relaxed. I would not say Ben was drunk.”The trial continues.

Fuller's six pack can't deflect Hampshire from first win

Colin Munro crashed his maiden fifty in this season’s Vitality Blast as Hampshire finally ended their winless start to the tournament

ScorecardHampshire sealed their first win of their T20 Blast campaign by putting struggling Middlesex to the sword at the Ageas Bowl in a performance which hinted that suggestions of their decline as a force in the format are premature.Between 2010 and 2015, Hampshire built the first real dynasty seen in T20 cricket, as their well-drilled, methodical side reached Finals Day every season, winning the title twice. But they crashed out of the 2016 tournament with a whimper, winning only four games in the season, and fans were concerned that last year’s resurgence – which saw them edged out by eventual winners Notts in the semi-final – was nothing more than an outlier; with three losses from three in the Blast so far, another season of discontent looked on the cards. Here, Colin Munro’s all-round show helped to allay those concerns. Munro’s blistering 40-ball 63 had put Hampshire on track for a score well over 200, before an unlikely six-wicket haul from James Fuller restricted them to 184 all out.Any fears the collapse would harm them were swiftly averted: Munro added two wickets and a run out to his fiery innings as Middlesex struggled to find middle-overs momentum in their run chase, and Hampshire secured a 21-run victory. Admittedly, their performance was not entirely clinical: it featured dropped catches, wayward death bowling, and a concerning batting collapse. But with a win on the board and some much-needed confidence back in the side, Hampshire will look to gather momentum in this tournament in their bid to engender another era of domination.”I thought we left 15-20 runs out there,” Munro said. “It was a good surface, and we just lost a couple of key wickets in the middle there.”Things haven’t gone our way, but as long as you try to train the same way and prepare the same way, you’ll get results down the track, and tonight it was good to get on the board at last. We’ve still got some left in the tank, but there’s a lot of positives to take into tomorrow’s game.”After he won the toss and chose to bat, the early signs were that this would be James Vince’s night. He hit the first three balls of the innings – bowled by Steven Finn – for four, with a punch through cover point followed by two whips to the midwicket boundary. Two more sublime strokes for four followed off Paul Stirling’s first over, and Vince was motoring. But his reputation precedes him. As is so often the case, Vince got in, looked a million dollars, and got out, as he flicked Finn to deep square leg on 23. Vince has reached twenty 41 times since the start of the 2015 Blast, but has only turned twelve of those starts into fifties. It is not a statistic that will trouble him – he was on the list of the top three Blast run-scorers in two of the past three seasons – but one that will do little to convince England that he has grit as well as grace.Hampshire’s total was underpinned by Munro and Rilee Rossouw’s 72-run third-wicket stand in 7.3 overs. They knocked the ball about patiently in the middle overs, while thumping the bad balls – of which there were plenty – to the fence as Hampshire reached 122 for 2 after 12 overs.Perhaps out of desperation, Dawid Malan threw the ball to Fuller; and out of nowhere, Hampshire lost their heads. Rossouw was caught at deep cover, before Tom Alsop chopped on at the end of his first over, and Munro skied a catch to Max Holden in his second. His third saw Dawson and Berg miscue to long-on and nick off respectively, before he had Lewis McManus caught in the deep in his final over as Hampshire were bowled out for 184.Fuller’s eventual 6 for 28 was among the most improbable of six-wicket hauls. He said it was “a massive surprise to get a bowl”, given his bowling went unused in last night’s defeat to Somerset, and he was the eighth bowler that Malan turned to. Yet that still left him with ample time to return the best figures for Middlesex in a T20 as he became only the sixth man to bag six wickets in an innings in the Blast’s history. In truth, Fuller’s haul masked a shoddy Middlesex effort with the ball. Admittedly, the schedule has not been kind to them: they went 11 days without a game before last night, and Eoin Morgan and Malan’s absences due to England and Lions selection respectively have meant they are yet to have the same captain for consecutive fixtures. But it was telling that Malan and Stirling spent a minute or more discussing fields in the game’s second over; bowlers can hardly expect to succeed when strategies are being created on the spot, and Middlesex’s supporters may well start to question what Daniel Vettori has achieved in his role as T20 coach.Predictably, spin proved key in the run chase. Holden’s chancy start meant Middlesex were 45-1 after five overs, but in the final over of the powerplay, he ran himself out after Malan was caught reverse-sweeping. With the fielding restrictions lifted, Munro had Morgan caught in the deep with his skiddy medium pace as he and Dawson put the breaks on. No side has a slower scoring rate against spin in the Blast than Middlesex and it showed, with boundaries suddenly at a premium.Just as he was set to attack, John Simpson skied a catch to Vince on the edge of the ring, while Dwayne Bravo started to play his shots. He launched Dawson for two sixes down the ground, but short of any real support, he had to keep swinging, and his miscued heave off Munro was well caught by the bowler running round to square leg. With Bravo gone, Hampshire’s victory was in little doubt, and a late rally from Middlesex’s tail could not hide their shortcomings.

Move over Maddison & Son: Spurs’ 124-touch "force" was Ange’s true hero

Tottenham Hotspur extended their imperious start to the Premier League season with a comprehensive victory over Fulham, returning to the top of the table with an assured victory to continue the revolution under Ange Postecoglou.

Having fallen by the wayside last season and trudged to an eighth-placed finish in the English top-flight, Spurs have rekindled their former verve in front of goal following the Australian's appointment, having collected seven victories from nine matches.

Fulham had handed Tottenham their sole defeat of the season back in August, winning on penalties in the Carabao Cup, but the affair on Monday night proved to be one of great frustration for Marco Silva's men, who failed to ignite the attacking spark needed to hinder this burgeoning battalion of Lilywhites.

How did Maddison & Son perform vs Fulham?

Winning 2-0, it was hardly surprising that Heung-min Son and £40m summer signing James Maddison popped up with the goals, with the latter proving to be a stroke of genius on the transfer front after producing such awe-inspiring performances thus far.

Following Harry Kane's sale to Bayern Munich in the summer, Spurs would have been left quaking, but Son's newly-appointed captaincy and revitalised presence in the centre-forward position has reequipped his talent as one of English football's finest forwards.

heung-min-son-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-conte-jack-clarke-sunderland

Indeed, posting seven goals and one assist across nine league outings this season, the South Korean captain has been first-class, to say the least.

But his newfound role as the focal frontman would not have been made possible without the conduit that is Maddison, with the playmaker's goal now meaning that he has plundered three goals and five assists from ten matches since his summer transfer.

While the forward phenoms have been immense, Postecoglou will perhaps be most pleased with the resurgence of the backline, with no player more impressive than Cristian Romero in front of Guglielmo Vicario's goal this term.

How good has Cristian Romero been this season?

Romero signed for Tottenham from Serie A side Atalanta for around £42m in 2021, with the Argentinian centre-back long proving his worth as a tenacious and tough defender but not quite combining the cogs last year, once described as a "liability" by writer Mitch Fretton.

This season, he has started every match en route to table-topping stature thus far, having earned praise for his "incredible" performances by football.london's Alasdair Gold, which indeed spilled over onto the display against the Cottagers.

As per Sofascore, the 25-year-old made two clearances, one tackle and one interception, he took 124 touches and completed 92% of his passes, he won both of his ground duels and he made one key pass and succeeded with his sole attempted dribble, hailed as a "force" for his display by Sky Sports commentator Seb Hutchinson during the match.

As per FBref, the £165k-per-week titan also ranks among the top 3% of centre-halves across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles, the top 15% for interceptions, the top 18% for pass completion and the top 18% for shot-creating actions per 90.

Ultimately, there is a long way to go in the Premier League before credible claims of title contention can come into play; frankly, just one slip-up across the next few weeks would set the vultures circling.

But what Tottenham do have, however, is a manager who has instilled belief and confidence into a formerly beleaguered outfit, and the continuing fruitful results move Tottenham ever closer to that coveted place back among Europe's elite.

With a defender of Romero's ilk at the back, there's no telling how mighty this team will become over the next few years, but, undoubtedly, Spurs boast one of the most exciting squads in Europe right now.

Corinthians vence Palmeiras e chega à final do Brasileirão Feminino

"Very ambitious" – Reporter thinks Chelsea could make "interesting signing"

Chelsea have been told they could make a "really interesting" signing after reports of their interest in a "very ambitious" star.

Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino secured a chaotic 4-1 win away to London rivals Tottenham on Monday, a game which perhaps stands out as this season's most entertaining encounter to date. The thrilling 90 minutes saw red cards, injuries, a succession of missed chances, goals ruled out and VAR controversy over what was a memorable return to Spurs for Chelsea's manager.

Summer signing Nicolas Jackson, who has come under some criticism since his joining from Villarreal, bagged his first Chelsea hat-trick in the final 15 minutes and went home with the match ball. The Senegalese striker did miss a fair few opportunities, though, and perhaps would've done little to convince his doubters overall. Pochettino sent a message to Jackson after his performance, explaining to the press that he needs to improve and hopes his hat-trick will give the forward confidence.

"He is so young and came from Spain, different league and he needs to improve," said Pochettino on Jackson.

"I hope this hat-trick can allow him top play more relaxed and find the confidence he needs. I am happy for him because we know that when strikers don’t score, they suffer. So that is for people to think. He is really young, arrived to the club this summer, and it’s not easy to play for Chelsea. It’s the history, about winning, lifting trophies."

Jackson's form this season has been central to debate, with reports also suggesting that Chelsea are targeting a new striker for 2024.

Chelsea could make "interesting" signing in Toney

One heavily-linked option is Brentford star Ivan Toney, who scored 20 league goals for the Bees last season prior to his ban for alleged gambling breaches.

Chelsea are one of the favourites for Toney, according to reports in the last few weeks. The Englishman has also been described as a Jackson upgrade, with journalist Paul Brown now telling GiveMeSport that why Toney would come as a "really interesting" Chelsea signing.

“It depends on what Pochettino wants from his striker, but I think Toney would be a really interesting signing for Chelsea," said Brown this week.

"He is an established Premier League goalscorer, he's very ambitious, and his movement is good. I think he'd be interesting for them."

More interestingly, the 27-year-old has even drawn comparisons with former Tottenham striker Harry Kane, with Arsenal star Declan Rice praising his "playmaker"-like ability to talkSPORT.

"If you look at what he does for Brentford, how consistent he is and what he does for his team, he's fully deserving of a call-up," said Rice on Toney.

"He's kind of like Harry Kane in a way where he's not only an out-and-out striker, he's a playmaker as well – his left and right footed passing, the way he picks out his teammates is a special technique to have."

Mick Jagger pledges charity donations for stand-out performances in Oval Test

Rolling Stones frontman to donate £20,000 to Chance to Shine each time a player from either side scores a century or claims a five-wicket haul

Mick Jagger supports Chance to Shine•Chance to Shine

Mick Jagger has pledged to donate £20,000 to Chance to Shine each time a player from either side scores a century or claims a five-wicket haul in the final Test of the summer at The Oval.He will also donate £10,000 for every half-century or three-wicket haul.Jagger, the Rolling Stones singer, has a long association with cricket. The son of a PE teacher and cricket lover, he has been a regular face at matches all around the world, including appearances during World Cups and Ashes tours, to Ireland’s maiden Test match against Pakistan at Malahide in May.”I follow England – the game in general, in fact – from wherever I am in the world and thought this would be a fun way to make some money for Chance to Shine,” Jagger said. “It’s been an exciting series that has got people talking cricket so let’s reflect that; with every inspiring performance comes a new fan and the younger those fans are, the better it is for cricket’s future.”No pressure on either Joe Root’s guys or Virat Kohli’s – though the bigger they go at the Oval the better!”Jagger was also a significant investor in the early years of CricInfo (as it was then known). In 1997, while on tour with the Rolling Stones in the USA, he teamed up with the website through a brand-new company, Jagged Internetworks, to ensure he could keep tabs on England’s progress in the Akai Singer Champions Trophy in the UAE, a tournament that England eventually won under the captaincy of Adam Hollioake.Chance to Shine, the charity committed to taking cricket back into state school and other communities, is encouraging cricket-loving fans to follow Sir Mick’s lead and give £20 for a century or five-wicket haul and £10 for a 50 or three wickets. All donations will be matched pound for pound by England & Wales Cricket Board until 30 September. Donations can be made at chancetoshine.org/donateSince 2005, Chance to Shine has given over four million children the chance to play cricket.

VEJA A TABELA DO BRASILEIRÃO
