Ange could unleash Spurs’ new Maddison in “immense” £75k-p/w machine

After defeat against Chelsea last Monday, Tottenham Hotspur's striking start to the season took another hit as the Ange Postecoglou's threadbare side succumbed to Wolverhampton Wanderers pressure at Molineux in a dramatic turnaround.

Tottenham had blitzed into form in the Premier League this season and won eight of their first ten matches, also drawing twice, before this succession of losses demoted them to fourth place, though they sit just two points behind table-topping Manchester City.

The third international break of the term perhaps comes at the perfect time for Spurs, whose manager Postecoglou can now recalibrate and refocus after a testing period.

Destiny Udogie will return to action following suspension, but the likes of impressive summer signings Micky van de Ven and James Maddison are expected to be sidelined until the new year. There's no shirking away from it – it's a detrimental blow.

That being said, it does open up a window of opportunity for other midfielders to stake their claim for a starting spot in Postecoglou's first team.

The players who could replace James Maddison

Against Wolves, Postecoglou opted to tweak the system and remove the creative role somewhat, opting for a midfield trio of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The latter, Hojbjerg, has not been favoured for a starting spot this term and clearly doesn't offer the same level of creativity as Maddison; he produced an industrious display against Wolves, but he's not the solution over the winter period.

Coming off the bench and testing Jose Sa's goal with a fizzing strike was Giovani Lo Celso, however, with the Argentinian now presented with a lifeline after previously falling by the wayside on English shores.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielderGiovani Lo Celso.

Branded a "flop" by The Athletic's Jack Pitt-Brooke, Lo Celso had spent the past 18 months out on loan with Villarreal in LaLiga, but he does fit the bill to replace Maddison in the middle.

Indeed, Lo Celso ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 3% for assists and the top 1% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

There is past evidence that he can't quite live up to the rigours of the Premier League, though the same cannot be said for Rodrigo Bentancur, whose return to fitness comes at the perfect time for Postecoglou.

Rodrigo Bentancur's style of play

The international break is loathed by many supporters, and it does feel somewhat tedious amid the excitement of the domestic scene, but the sojourn helps Spurs pick themselves up and allows Bentancur to continue to rebuild his fitness.

The Uruguayan midfielder joined Tottenham from Juventus for £21.5m in January 2022 and posted five goals and two assists from just 17 Premier League starts last year before disaster struck and he ruptured his ACL back in February.

Described as "technically immense" by broadcaster Adam Smith, Bentancur has earned three substitute appearances for Postecoglou's side recently and could be in line for a first start of the season when domestic football swings back around.

The £75k-per-week star was incredibly clinical last term, taking only 0.8 shots per game in the Premier League – as per Sofascore – but still boasting an impressive return, also completing 85% of his passes and forging 2.5 tackles per outing.

Postecoglou could find a brilliant blend of offensive vigour and defensive authority in this dynamo, who could fill the void left by a playmaker of Maddison's ilk and ensure that Tottenham's centre retains its strength over the coming months of action.

Shardul Thakur suffers groin strain on Test debut

The 26-year old bowled only 10 balls on the morning of his Test debut and will not take the field for the rest of the day

‘Shardul’s injury was a big setback for us’ – Umesh

India’s newest Test cricketer Shardul Thakur will not take the field for the rest of the day, after having walked off in the morning due to a pain in the groin region. Thakur, who could bowl only 1.4 overs on debut against West Indies in Hyderabad, has gone for scans and an update on his participation for the rest of the Test will be taken after being assessed by the team management. When Thakur’s front foot landed on the bowling crease as he delivered his 10th ball in Test cricket, it seemed to buckle and the pain was immediate. There was no followthrough, and even as he started hobbling on the spot, the physio Patrick Farhart ran out to assess the situation. It didn’t seem like any immediate treatment was done, though. For the most part, both men just spoke to each other before the captain Virat Kohli joined in, but soon Thakur began walking towards the dressing room.It was only half an hour ago that Thakur, 26, was being presented his first Test cap – the 294th Test cricketer for India – by coach Ravi Shastri and he was kissing the India crest, celebrating his rise to five-day cricket after a first-class career that began in November 2012. He had been brought in to the XI for Mohammed Shami, who according to Kohli was rested after playing six consecutive Tests.Thakur had to bail out midway through the Asia Cup in September as well, complaining of a right hip-groin soreness. Although he was back playing cricket 10 days later, in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, it seems that now he has aggravated the issue.

Talks held: Wolves move to sign "jackpot" top target for O’Neil in January

When Julen Lopetegui left Wolverhampton Wanderers just before the Premier League season got underway, their top-flight status seemed more at risk than ever. The swift appointment of Gary O'Neil quickly eased those fears, however, and the Midlands club have since risen into the comforts of mid-table.

Now that he's been proving his ability to keep the club in the Premier League, the former Bournemouth manager may just get the chance to welcome some reinforcements during the January transfer window. Whilst Wolves may not be the biggest spenders, reports suggest that they could make a move for one particular winter target.

Wolves transfer news

During the summer transfer window, Wolves were dealt a major blow through the exits of both Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes, leaving their midfield depleted. Given O'Neil's late arrival, the new manager didn't get the chance to make his mark on the squad through certain additons, either, which makes his start to life in the Midlands all the more impressive. O'Neil could soon get that chance, however, with reports suggesting that Wolves have identified a top target.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil

According to John Percy of The Telegraph, Wolves have identified Rafiu Durosinmi as their top target in the January transfer window and have held talks with Viktoria Plzen this week over a possible transfer as they look to bolster their attacking options.

Personal terms are reportedly proving to be a problem and the Premier League side aren't the only club interested, though, with Eintracht Frankfurt also eyeing a potential move for the Viktoria Plzen man, who is valued at £10m by his current club. When the transfer window swings open, it will be interesting to see whether Wolves make their move. They're certainly facing tough competition from the Bundesliga side, but their Premier League status could leave them in good stead.

"Jackpot" Durosinmi can boost Wolves' survival chances

Since Raul Jimenez's drop off in form and subsequent exit, Wolves have lacked a true goalscoring threat, which is rarely a good sign for a club looking to thrive in the Premier League. They could solve that problem in January through the arrival of Durosinmi, however. Durosinmi's stats prove that he could be ready to make the step into the challenge of English football, with nine goals in 19 appearances before his untimely torn ligament injury.

The 20-year-old has earned plenty of praise for his performances too, including from Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, who posted on X: "20 years of age. He looks like a jackpot signing for Viktoria!"

If O'Neil can sign the forward, he could form the perfect partnership with Pedro Neto in the long run. The Portugal international has enjoyed an impressive season so far and looks back to his best, leading the Premier League' assist chart with seven to his name – something that Durosinmi can benefit from. When the January transfer window swings open, the forward could certainly be one to keep an eye on.

England close in on series win despite Angelo Mathews defiance

The wicket of Angelo Mathews minutes before an early close gave England the advantage in a twisting, turning fourth-innings battle

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando in Pallekele17-Nov-2018
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAt tea, this was shaping to be a classic. Sri Lanka needed 82 to win, with five wickets in hand, and Angelo Mathews was batting like the colossus he used to be several years ago. But in the 20 deliveries bowled after tea, England took two monumental strides, and the game’s outlook was transformed. The first blow after the break was struck by Moeen Ali, who had bowled beautifully just before the break as well. Third ball, he trapped Mathews in front of the stumps for 88 – the second occasion in the series in which Mathews has been out in the over after tea. The next wicket went to Jack Leach, who looped one into Dilruwan Perera’s boot and raised a successful lbw appeal, the batsman having just plain missed it.When the rains came to wash out the remainder of the day’s play, Sri Lanka had Niroshan Dickwella at the crease on 27, but only had Akila Dananjaya, Suranga Lakmal and Malinda Pushpakumara to come. A difficult 75 runs were still needed. The pitch? A tough one. The occasional ball still took off from a length for the spinners, but it seemed to have slowed down quite a bit, meaning that batting was still difficult, but perhaps not as arduous as it had been on days two and three. Dananjaya and Lakmal were involved in partnerships worth 56 and 28 in the first innings, but on this occasion, they will be batting with a less secure senior batsman in Dickwella, and also have to contend with the intense pressure of a run chase.England had taken three wickets in the first session, to seize the initiative, and resumed after lunch with another piece of fielding magic – the likes of which has kept them in the game more than once. Dimuth Karunaratne was batting well – even better than Mathews at that stage – but when on 57, he went for a lap sweep off Adil Rashid. He could barely believe how he had been dismissed after playing that shot so well.Keaton Jennings, fielding at short leg, began to move, anticipating the shot and snatched at the ball, which had come off the bat at some speed. He didn’t quite snaffle it himself, but parried it to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, who was in the perfect position to complete the catch. Sri Lanka’s two senior-most batsmen had been parted. With 198 left to get, the hosts were four wickets down.Keaton Jennings took a blinding catch at short leg•Getty Images

Mathews, though, stepped up through the middle of the second session, making fuss-free runs into the well-spread outfield, while Roshen Silva worked himself slowly into the innings, as he had done in the first dig. As for every other batsman who has spent any time at the crease in this Test, there were edges that dropped short, and plenty that spun past the bat; lbw appeals as well. Mathews got his reverse-sweep in good working order, which was important against the finger spin of Leach and Moeen especially. Against Rashid, who had a tendency to pitch short, he sat back and cut him to the cover sweeper. There were a couple of occasions on which Rashid’s googly was not read by the Sri Lanka batsmen, but they eventually began to pick it.Roshen, though, departed before he and Mathews could truly make the game secure, caught at slip off Moeen, to end their 73-run stand. Mathews would only add 20 further runs to his own score before himself being dismissed. His stand with Dickwella was worth 45, with the wicketkeeper-batsman playing a typically high-risk brand of cricket through that period, sweeping and reverse-sweeping with abandon, and almost getting caught when he miscued an attempted lofted cover drive. In the first session, Leach had struck three times in successive overs to dismiss Kaushal Silva, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis for single figures, leaving Sri Lanka gasping at 26 for 3. The wicket of de Silva was again thanks largely to the excellent work of Jennings at short leg, who was wrong footed, but managed to stick out his left arm and snatch the low chance after de Silva had looked to work the ball to leg. Karunaratne and Mathews then instilled a bit of calm into the chase with their 77-run stand, but again did not bat long enough together to put Sri Lanka into a comfortable position. Before that, England’s last-wicket pair, Foakes and James Anderson had added 22 to the overnight score. Anderson was bowled by Dilruwan Perera immediately after Sri Lanka took the second new ball, leaving Sri Lanka a target of 301 to win.
