Celtic: Hoops interested in Milan van Ewijk

Celtic are once again being credited with an interest in SC Heerenveen full-back Milan van Ewijk ahead of the summer transfer window, as per Dutch outlet Voetbal International.

The lowdown: Previous links

The Hoops were initially linked with the 21-year-old back in March of 2021 – when John Kennedy was in interim charge – prior to the starlet’s £540,000 switch from ADO Den Haag (Transfermarkt).

Since then, the Holland youth international has gone from strength to strength in the Eredivisie and has previously been likened to compatriot and now Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries.

Amidst interest from across Europe, Celtic have once again been cited as potential suitors for the talented right-back…

The latest: Major interest

As per VI, newly crowned Scottish champions Celtic, PSV Eindhoven, Stade Brest, Lille and QPR are all attentive to Van Ewijk’s situation.

It’s claimed that the Under 21 Dutch ace, who has already made 77 top-flight outings in his homeland, is ‘of interest’ to the Bhoys as Ange Postecoglou attempts to strengthen the Parkhead squad ahead of a season in the Champions League.

Furthermore, it’s suggested that there is a ‘real chance’ the full-back – described as possessing ‘tons of potential’ by journalist Michael Bell – could make another move this summer despite his recent switch.

The verdict: Strength in depth required

Albeit many would point to the rise of Anthony Ralston at right-back this season and question the need for reinforcements, Celtic will embark on a quest for all three domestic trophies next term whilst also needing to compete in the group stages of Europe’s elite competition.

With that in mind, top-level understudies will be required in every position and at present, Postecoglou can only truly call upon Ralston or Josip Juranovic for the big occasions to fill what is a pivotal role in the Greek-Australian’s favoured system.

Capable of playing as a conventional right-back or in a more advanced position, Van Ewijk has earned an impressive 7.02 average Sofascore rating this season, winning 6.1 duels per game and completing 77% of all attempted passes, ticking an abundance of required attributes in both a defensive and attacking capacity that make the Dutchman a viable candidate to add to the Lennoxtown ranks.

Wolves should unleash Diego Costa

Wolverhampton Wanderers have begun their second season under Bruno Lage with a bit of a whimper, only recording their first Premier League victory against Southampton in their last outing.

Their goalscoring woes have continued over from last season, where they only netted 38 league goals, with a solid rear-guard preventing them from slipping into any relegation trouble.

With just the three goals in six matches, Lage has still to correct this massive problem Wolves suffer from, and that’s despite the signings of Goncalo Guedes and Sasa Kalajdzic (he will now miss the majority of the campaign due to injury) during the summer.

The injury to the Austrian frontman led Lage to secure a deal to bring striker Diego Costa to Molineux, and the manager will be ready to unleash him against Manchester City tomorrow lunchtime

On the Chalkboard

Costa is no stranger to the Premier League, playing for Chelsea in two different spells, winning two league titles under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Add in two La Liga crowns, a Europa League title and three European Super Cups and Lage has himself a serial winner in the squad.

The £50k-per-week hitman has scored 197 senior goals for club and country since 2006 and despite not playing a match in 2022, he can still offer an excellent goal threat.

During his latest spell, at Brazilian outfit Atletico Mineiro, he scored five goals in 19 appearances before having his contract terminated after only five months.

In ordinary circumstances, Lage would have given the 33-year-old plenty of time to get up to speed fitness-wise, but he doesn’t have the luxury due to injuries.

Mourinho once called Costa an “animal” and with his predatory instincts around the penalty box, the now AS Roma manager was absolutely spot on.

It is clear that Wolves need someone with a killer intuition to improve their woeful goal tally this season, and Costa fits the bill perfectly if unleashed against Pep Guardiola’s City juggernaut, he can terrorise their defence and create plenty of opportunities.

Leeds will rue not signing Kvaratskhelia

Leeds United chief Victor Orta missed a trick with Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, it seems.

The Yorkshire outfit held talks with the Georgian superstar back in the summer of 2021, as revealed by the winger himself back in his home country, where he told reporters:

“There were negotiations with Leeds and maybe they will continue again. I don’t like to talk in advance.”

Indeed, such interest did resurface earlier this year, after Italian outlet Il Mattino (via Sport Witness) claimed the Yorkshiremen were leading the race to sign the 21-year-old dynamo.

It would be Serie A side Napoli that sealed his signature, though, joining in a £10m deal from Dinamo Batumi back in early July – and what a signing he has been for Gli Azzurri.

The 17-cap international has scored four goals and laid on two assists across six appearances so far this campaign, including a particularly glowing display as Luciano Spaletti’s side thrashed Premier League giants Liverpool 4-1 in the Champions League earlier this week, leading to many singing his praises.

BBC Match of the Day presenter and ex-England striker Gary Lineker claimed on Twitter that Kvaratskhelia “is an exciting young talent” who is “difficult to play against.”

Whilst Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor lauded the Georgian gem as a “special, special talent” and suggested that he “would have been such a great fit for Leeds.”

Lining up on the left-flank for Napoli, the 21-year-old speedster caused Trent Alexander-Arnold nightmares all evening as he registered four successful dribbles, played three key passes and managed to fire off three shots, as per SofaScore.

BT Sport punditry duo Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Fowler were scathing in their review of the England international’s performance, claiming that it was “shocking” and that he showed a ” lack of desire,” in quotes relayed by English newspaper Metro.

In the past, Football FanCast viewed Kvaratskhelia as an ideal successor to Raphinha at Elland Road due to his remarkable ability on the ball, echoing the thoughts of Taylor, and whilst Luis Sinisterra does look the part, you can’t help but feel that Orta and co missed the boat with the Napoli man.

On the above evidence, Leeds dropped the ball with the Georgian machine, so they will surely regret not signing him. He’ll certainly be sold by the Italian outfit for tenfold of the £10m they paid.

AND in other news, Phil Hay’s recent 49ers update could be game-changing for Leeds and Marsch…

Ma City interested in signing ‘heart with legs’

Manchester City are interested in signing Barcelona starlet Gavi, according to journalist Graeme Bailey.

The Lowdown: Gavi’s contract

Having emerged as a regular in the Catalan outfit’s midfield last season, the 18-year-old has become a crucial component in Xavi’s starting XI.

However, the youngster has entered the final year of his contract, which is set to expire at the end of June 2023.

According to 90min, Gavi had agreed to sign a new long-term deal with Barcelona earlier this year, but the club’s financial issues meant this was no longer viable a few months back and frustration is mounting in the player’s camp.

The Latest: Bailey’s news

Bailey has now shared an update on Gavi’s contract situation, revealing a number of Premier League teams are eyeing up a move for the Spain international.

Taking to Twitter, the journalist revealed:

“Barcelona confident Gavi contract agreement is close despite fresh transfer interest.

“Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool would all love to take brilliant Spaniard and have made it known.”

The attached report reveals City are one of several teams to hold ‘meetings’ about a deal.

The Verdict: Huge talent

When looking at the 18-year-old’s underlying stats, it is clear to see why so many English clubs are interested in securing the his signature.

As per FBRef, compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, Gavi ranks in the 97th percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area, in the 94th percentile for progressive passes received and in the 92nd percentile for dribbles completed, characteristics which may remind Blues fans of a certain David Silva.

Barcelona boss Xavi has been full of praise for the youngster in recent times, hailing his ‘spectacular’ ability and maturity within the game.

He even claimed Gavi is ‘a heart with legs’, as he puts so much intensity and passion into his play.

If the Spaniard fails to sign a new deal with the La Liga giants, Man City should do all they can to bring him to the Etihad.

Neal Maupay cost Everton three points

Everton hosted Liverpool in the first Merseyside Derby of the season at Goodison Park this afternoon and, after losing twice to their bitter rivals last season, Frank Lampard will be delighted to take a point from the game.

The Toffees were ready to put up a fight when Jurgen Klopp’s side made the short trip for the early kick-off between the two clubs and, as expected, the end-to-end spectacle was full of drama from start to finish.

Despite enjoying less possession (39%), completing fewer dribbles and fewer passes, the argument could be made that Everton were unlucky to not take all three points from the match – with the Blues creating more big chances and seeing a goal narrowly ruled out for offside by VAR.

Boyhood Liverpool academy player turned Everton centre-back Conor Coady found the back of the net, but after a thoroughly checked VAR review the player’s likely winning goal was disallowed in the 71st minute, but this was not the only frustrating glimmer of hope from Everton.

One player who made not only his derby debut but his Everton debut today was newly-signed striker Neal Maupay, with the forward being given the perfect opportunity to prove his worth to Frank Lampard. However, his efforts were nothing short of wasteful throughout the game.

The £35k-per-week former Brighton and Hove Albion attacker was dubbed a “horrible finisher” by journalist Ahmed Yussuf after his display, and it comes as no surprise after he wasted what was probably the most clear-cut chance of the entire game in the 65th minute.

Along with a big chance missed, Maupay attempted no dribbles, had fewer touches than Jordan Pickford (24 to 39) and lost possession of the ball every four touches – returns that will disappoint the Toffees boss, who had put all his hopes of a goal-scoring striker into the Frenchman whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin recovers from his hamstring injury.

Indeed, Lampard recently confirmed that Calvert-Lewin is getting very close to returning, so it will be interesting to see when the England international does get back to action if Maupay continues to get chances to start – as he may have not only cost Everton three points against the Reds, but he could have also wasted one of his few chances to display his talent from the off.

Everton are now unbeaten in their last four Premier League games with four consecutive draws, but Lampard will now need to work with his players to take it to the next level to turn their equalisers into winners over the coming weeks and months ahead.

Ponting: Shreyas 'understands game situations better than ever before'

“He’s a lot more confident in himself now than he was, and that comes with experience,” says Ricky Ponting of Shreyas Iyer

Deivarayan Muthu01-May-20252:04

Jaffer: Shreyas is currently India’s best six-hitter

Punjab Kings (PBKS) coach Ricky Ponting is impressed with Shreyas Iyer’s evolution as a captain, saying that he is responding to pressure better after having led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title last season.Ponting has seen that evolution from close quarters, having also worked with Iyer during his stint at Delhi Capitals (DC). Iyer and Ponting had led DC to the playoffs from 2019 to 2021, and even the final in 2020. Their reunion as captain and coach at PBKS has turned out to be sweet so far, with the team well-placed for a playoffs spot at the moment.”He’s a lot more confident in himself now than he was, and that comes with experience,” Ponting said in his post-match press conference after PBKS defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk. “I mean, he won the IPL last year as a captain, so when you’ve done that and you’ve got that experience behind you and you believe and trust in your own instincts, I think that’s the biggest thing with captaincy, especially in a T20 game when everything around you is happening so fast.Related

Hat-trickster Chahal is still making batters look silly

Stats – Chahal's second IPL hat-trick extends CSK's woes at home

“You know, fours and sixes are flying everywhere. His ability to stay calm on the field, although he might not have been that calm tonight when we were a couple of overs late getting through the overs, but just his maturity, I think, and that experience.”That maturity shone through when he matched his premier spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal, up with MS Dhoni – who continues to struggle against this variety of bowling – despite the presence of spin-hitter Shivam Dube at the other end. After having Dhoni hole out for 11 off four balls, Chahal went onto bag a hat-trick in that 19th over of CSK’s innings to spin the game PBKS’ way.Iyer then helmed PBKS’ chase with 72 off 41 balls, hitting five fours and four sixes. He was on 28 off 23 balls at one point but turned up the tempo to bring up his fifty off just 32 balls.”He’s a more mature player now, I think he understands the game and game situations probably better than ever before, and I think that was showcased there tonight, to be able to play the way that he did,” Ponting said of Iyer. “You know, he’ll be disappointed with himself that he didn’t hit the winning runs, he didn’t get his team across the line, because I know how much he prides himself on being the man that’s there at the end to win games. But look, I love working with him, he talks with all the players, all the players love working with him.”The way he communicates with them, whether it’s during the game or at practice or back at the team hotel… we’ve managed to create a really good environment that everybody seems to be really happy in and the boys are playing some good cricket in. So, all in all, it was another good performance from us tonight.”2:33

Breaking down PBKS’ choice of bowlers against CSK

Not too long ago, Iyer was vulnerable to fast bowlers targeting him with short balls. In this IPL, he’s found a way to put those bowlers away, thanks to a technical tweak. In all, Iyer has scored 86 runs off 44 short or short-of-a-good-length deliveries while being dismissed three times this season.”I’ve had nothing to do with that,” Ponting said. “You guys will see how his stance has evolved. He’s opened his stance up a little bit. He’s getting his right eye around more to the release point of the ball. And with his shoulders being open, he’s being able to create some more access to the ball when the ball is back in towards his body. So that’s stuff that he’s all worked out himself.”We’re still working on it pretty much every day. There’re little things that he needs to do because it is such a drastic move that he’s done. He’s got to make sure that everything is in the right position and all his movements are syncing up really well.”But, I mean, some of the innings he’s played this tournament so far have been as good as anyone else’s. I mean, there’s been a lot of hundreds made, but Shreyas’ first game when he made 97, that’s as good an innings as I’ve seen in the tournament.”Former India coach Ravi Shastri also recently spoke of the technical adjustment Iyer had made to handle the short ball better.”He was very side on, was back and back, very much leg side. The fact that he’s prepared to go back and across now and with a very upright stance and the pick up,” Shastri noted on . “While he’s moving back, the bat’s being picked up as well when he’s going back and across.”That allows him to play both sides of the wicket. If they [fast bowlers] bang it in short, he can pull and hook. And if there’s any room outside the off stump, he can cut as well. So that opens up the game for him rather than being too leg side where the rib cage was being targeted and then there was no escape.”2:05

Jaffer – Prabhsimran not throwing it away post-powerplay was good to watch

PBKS next head to Dharamsala, their second home, where they will play three of their remaining four league-stage fixtures. The team has lost the last four games they have played at the venue across two seasons, but Ponting backed them to remedy that home record in this IPL.”I mean, it’s still our home ground, right? It’s our home ground,” Ponting said. “We should know the conditions better than anybody else. We should be able to play the conditions better than anybody else.”We’ve got a very long travel day tomorrow, and then we’ve got two training days before our next game. So, we’ll have a chance to look at the conditions and work them out. I think the one thing in our favour is we had a four- or five-day camp up in Dharamshala before this season started. Everyone went there except for a couple of the overseas guys. So our Indian guys will have a good understanding of what the conditions will be like up there.”I know it’s a slightly different time of year now, but I think we’ve got a pretty good idea of what the conditions will be like.”

Cole Palmer facing several weeks out as journalist details "new" Chelsea injury

Chelsea star Cole Palmer has been carrying a niggling groin injury for some time, but a new problem means the Englishman is now facing some time out.

Cole Palmer forced off in 2-1 Chelsea defeat to Man United

Enzo Maresca’s frustration was evident during an afternoon to forget at Old Trafford last Saturday, with their 2-1 loss away to Man United made worse only by Palmer’s haunting groin issue.

It is a problem that has plagued the Blues’ superstar player for some time.

Palmer has been carrying it since the start of 2025/2026, forcing him to miss their wins over West Ham and Fulham, with the ex-Man City sensation only getting around half an hour of match action in their 2-2 draw at Brentford.

The 23-year-old got on the scoresheet against Keith Andrews’ side, and scored a stunning goal on the counter-attack in Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League – all whilst playing with a groin injury.

Speaking in his latest pre-match press conference before Chelsea take on Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup, Maresca said it is a problem being monitored day by day, but was quick to quash fears that Palmer might need surgery.

Now, as per journalist Simon Phillips, there has been a new update on Palmer’s condition, and it doesn’t make for pretty reading.

Cole Palmer suffers "new" injury to groin as Chelsea dealt blow

Writing via his Substack, the reporter claims that Palmer has suffered a “new” injury to the same groin that has been plaguing him non-stop this season, and he now faces several weeks on the sidelines.

The prospect of surgery also isn’t completely ruled out.

Phillips also stated that Chelsea have been managing his groin with painkiller injections before each game, and the forward started having further problems in that area late on in the Bayern game.

Despite this, Maresca started Palmer last Saturday, and it is a decision which the Blues will be ruing.

Sources have apparently made clear that he shouldn’t have participated in Manchester, and at the worst, Palmer could miss some crucial clashes.

Estimated games Cole Palmer could miss after new groin injury

Lincoln City (A) – EFL Cup

Brighton (H) – Premier League

Benfica (H) – Champions League

Liverpool (H) – Premier League

Nottingham Forest (A) – Premier League

Ajax (H) – Champions League

Sunderland (H) – Premier League

Tottenham (A) – Premier League

Chelsea will also regret not signing Xavi Simons in the summer window after being hijacked by Tottenham, with Maresca arguably in need of a quality playmaker alternative amid Palmer’s reoccurring struggles.
