DRS to be used in Pakistan-England Tests

Pakistan’s “home” series against England, to be played in the UAE from January 2012, will have DRS for the Tests in addition to the ODIs as previously decided.

Umar Farooq09-Dec-2011Pakistan’s “home” series against England, to be played in the UAE from January 2012, will have DRS for the Tests in addition to the ODIs as previously decided. The PCB’s current sponsorship deal for the DRS, under which the ODIs in this series and those already played against Sri Lanka were covered, has been extended to include Tests but not the Twenty20 internationals. There will be no Hot Spot but ball-tracking technology provided by Hawk-Eye will be used in the DRS.”The PCB believes in technology and we were very keen to get the Test series covered with DRS too,” PCB’s General Manager media Nadeem Sarwar told ESPNcricinfo. “Our marketing department has done a great job to convince the sponsor and the DRS will bring added value to the Test series.”In October, the PCB had signed a deal with Pepsi to cover the cost of DRS for only the one-dayers against Sri Lanka and England in the UAE.”We are now hosting the [England] series with only Hawk-Eye for the DRS without the Hot Spot version. Since the use of this expensive technology was not part of the deal signed with the broadcaster [Ten Sports] but we will be considering the option in our new deal.”A deal with the broadcaster was renewed in November 2008 for five years according to which Ten Sports held the telecast and distribution rights for international tours including all Tests, ODIs and Twenty20 matches without the use of DRS technology.

Eles vêm no clube?

Supreme Court admits BCCI petition

The Supreme Court, while admitting a special leave petition filed by the BCCI last Friday, has issued a notice to the Cricket Association of Bihar, asking it to reply by August 29

The Supreme Court has given the Cricket Association of Bihar till August 29 to respond•AFP

The Supreme Court, while admitting a special leave petition (SLP) filed by the BCCI last Friday, has issued a notice to the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB), asking it to reply by August 29. However, the court has not permitted the BCCI to examine the inquiry commission’s report, which was submitted last week, and is yet to be opened. The BCCI had filed the SLP against a Bombay High Court order that said that the board had violated its own rules in the formation of the inquiry commission investigating the corruption allegations against the owners of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, as well as the two franchises in general. The High Court order was in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by CAB secretary Aditya Verma. The BCCI’s 13-page SLP contested the High Court order on various grounds, including its decision to entertain the PIL, given the board’s status as a private body. It had also sought to challenge the petitioner’s right to file a PIL and question the legality of the inquiry panel when it was not even part of the BCCI, and therefore not subject to the findings of the panel.During Wednesday’s 15-minute hearing in the Supreme Court, C Aryama Sundaram, the senior legal counsel appearing for BCCI, did not ask for any interim relief. Sundaram, arguing the case with Raju Subramaniam and Radha Rangaswamy, was heard by the two-judge bench of Justices AK Patnaik and Jagdish Singh Khehar. The court then asked CAB’s legal team to file their reply by August 29.Sundaram sought the court’s permission for the BCCI’s working committee to look at the contents of the inquiry commission’s report. He said that since the inquiry was an internal affair of the BCCI, its members should be allowed to read the report. However, the court felt that would be improper, and that it would only be correct to argue that point during the August 29 hearing.”The Supreme Court, at the stage of mentioning, can either issue a notice or dismiss the petition saying there is no substance. If the court finds there is substance, then it will issue a notice and direct the opponent to file a reply normally within four to six weeks,” a BCCI insider told ESPNcricinfo. “The date of hearing in this case is a miscellaneous date, so it should not take much time to dispose of the case.”Wednesday’s developments in the Supreme Court are unlikely to be a deterrent to N Srinivasan who is continuing as the BCCI president. If the Supreme Court doesn’t pronounce its ruling before the BCCI annual general meeting (AGM), slated to be held in the last week of September, Srinivasan may still continue to be the president for an additional year. According to the BCCI constitution, a president’s initial two-year term can be extended by another if the board backs him. Srinivasan will have completed two years by the September AGM.As one of the measures that would help improve his image in public, Srinivasan may back the appointment of a fresh inquiry commission, in place of the one whose appointment has been held in scrutiny. Many IPL governing council members feel the need of the hour is to appoint a new probe panel. “If the governing council proposes such a move, then the BCCI will seek opinion from its legal experts as to whether a new panel can be appointed when the matter is sub judice,” the BCCI insider revealed.

In Focus: Permanent move to Villa makes perfect sense for Johnstone

As reported by The Daily Mirror, Aston Villa are interested in making on-loan goalkeeper Sam Johnstone a permanent fixture at Villa Park in January.

What’s the story?

Johnstone has impressed at the Villans since joining on loan from Manchester United in January and this season already has helped the club keep five clean sheets in the Championship.

Now manager Steve Bruce wants to tie him down as number one at the club for the next few years and is eyeing a January move for the 24-year-old.

As quoted by The Mirror, Bruce said:

It would be great to keep him here for the next few years as Villa’s number one. I will need to ask the question. The ideal move for us would be to buy him in January. You’ve seen it, a young goalkeeper coming in and getting better with every game he plays.

It’s clear then that the club are massively interested in the Man United man, but is this the right career move for Johnstone himself?

Johnstone’s future

Now well into his twenties, what Johnstone needs most is regular first-team football and moving away from Manchester United is by far is best opportunity for that. David De Gea, as one of the world’s best goalkeepers, is always going to be first-choice at Old Trafford and the Villa star can do little to change that.

A move to another Premier League club so early could also be detrimental. He still has plenty of learning to do and cutting his teeth in the Championship is doing him no harm at all.

Villa have ambitions to get back into the top-flight and if Johnstone commits to the club it could be perfect for all parties in the years to come.

In the short-term, Villa Park appears to be a fantastic home for the goalkeeper and if the club can get the deal done, he should have no hesitation in signing up.

Bad day for Ashes hopefuls

Khawaja, Hughes, Smith and Ahmed failed collectively as Gloucestershire rounded up Australia A for 111 in their second innings, before a strong batting performance left them sniffing at an unlikely win

Driving to Bristol for a round of pre-Ashes preparatory talks with a strong overnight score in their minds, Australia’s coach Mickey Arthur and the team performance manager Pat Howard could have been forgiven for expecting more encouraging developments on their arrival. Instead the sunshine and good cheer of day one was to be replaced by far grimmer stuff – and not just because the weather in Bristol had turned from balmy to a chill wind and grey sky.Having rounded up the remainder of the Gloucestershire first innings for the addition of only 18 more runs, Australia A folded quite heedlessly for 111 in the second innings after declining to enforce the follow-on. This offered the hosts an unexpected window into the match, one left well and truly open by a stumps score of 162 for 3 in pursuit of 321.Arthur and Howard have a few issues in front of them, but the form of the batsmen to join the Ashes squad in Taunton on Monday is a mounting one. As far as Ashes preparations were concerned, this was a far from satisfactory day. Usman Khawaja and Phillip Hughes were unable to register scores of any note, while the likely first reserve batsman Steve Smith edged the seaming ball to be out for a duck. The trio had been promoted to Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in the batting order in an effort to give them some quality batting time, but none was to be had by anyone.Even Nic Maddinson, so impudent during his first-day 181, was cut down to size, flicking a catch down the leg side to depart first ball. Maddinson was one of four wickets for Will Gidman, who capitalised on the more generous allocation of swing and seam provided by overcast skies and a pitch freshened by overnight moisture.Gloucestershire were also aided by a pair of run-outs, each a direct hit from James Fuller, who roamed the deep and caught, first Khawaja and then Jordan Silk, short of their ground. Such charity from the visitors will not have pleased the bowlers, who soon found themselves defending a smaller advantage than had seemed possible when Smith chose to have another bat.So poor was Australia A’s innings in fact that the top score went to Matthew Wade with 28, his runs scored either side of a painful blow to the groin that forced the wicketkeeper to his haunches for several minutes. Ashton Agar was next best with 27, demonstrating, albeit briefly, that his languid athletic talent is not limited to slow left-arm spin. Nonetheless, a scoreboard reading 88 for 8 and then concluding on “Nelson” does not bode well for numerologists nor Australian Ashes optimists. To be in the field again within 35.1 overs of dismissing Gloucestershire the first time did not appear to agree with several of the Australia A bowlers, who with few exceptions had been much sharper when the day began. Ryan Harris induced an outside edge from Gidman in the first over of the morning, before Fawad Ahmed offered evidence of his legspin’s bite by having Benny Howell pouched at slip, then fizzing his next ball past Tom Smith’s outside edge.Neither Harris nor Ahmed would be quite so compelling in the afternoon, which also provided a lesson for Chadd Sayers, the South Australian seam and swing operative. Having nipped out two wickets in his first over of the day to claim the handsome figures of 5 for 24, Sayers looked considerably short of rhythm and accuracy when he returned. He did improve later on and added the wickets of Chris Dent and Dan Housego, but Gloucestershire were by then growing in confidence. They reached the close with Gareth Roderick accompanied by Dan Christian, who appeared intent on getting the better of his countrymen while sprinting to 40 from 42 balls in the final hour. He took a particular liking to the spin of Ahmed, taking 35 runs from the 31 balls he faced. As they pondered whether to expand the size of the Ashes squad by one or two on Sunday, that was yet another reason for Arthur and Howard’s brows to furrow.

Clarke plays up Australia unity

Michael Clarke has not denied the existence of serious rifts within the team in the past but insists the tourists have put the problems of the Mickey Arthur era behind them

Michael Clarke has not denied the existence of serious rifts within the team in the past but insists the tourists have put the problems of the Mickey Arthur era behind them under the guidance of the new coach Darren Lehmann. The revelation of Arthur’s log of claims about his sacking broke as the tourists trained at Lord’s two days out from the second Ashes Test, forcing hurried meetings about the team’s official response.Allegations of precisely how dimly Clarke viewed Shane Watson, and that the allrounder had been the one to inform Arthur of David Warner’s misadventures, will not necessarily be a shock to members of the Australia team. Clarke stated that the squad was more united now than it had been for some time, which bodes well for the rest of the Ashes but also casts harsh light on the team under Arthur.”I can’t remember for a long time the team being as united as we are right now,” Clarke said. “And no coincidence Darren’s played a big part in that. I think him as a man and a gentleman brings that to the forefront. He was a great guy to play with, and he’s no different as a coach. He loves having a good time, loves us enjoying our cricket and he was really proud, as I was, about the way we played over the past five days.”The most important thing is that we as a team are as focused as we can be on Thursday. We’ve obviously got a huge game in front of us, the boys are feeling great. As we showed in the last Test match we’re here to fight and do as well as we possibly can in this Test series. Nothing will get in the way of the team harmony at the moment. The feeling around the camp is magnificent. The feeling’s what you want it to be around the Australian cricket team.”The timing of the documents’ release has attracted the criticism of the Australian Cricketers’ Association chief executive, Paul Marsh, and Clarke said he was doing his best to ensure the team remained entirely focused on Lord’s, rather than the problems of the preceding six months.”For me right now it is ‘be focused on what’s in front of me, not what’s behind me’,” Clarke said. “Decisions have been made and made for reasons. We’ve got a fantastic group with a great coach who has united us, and we’re heading in the right direction. It makes no difference to me … my eyes are focused on one goal, and that’s winning this Test match. I know everybody in that change-room’s exactly the same. Boys have trained well today, come and train tomorrow.”Brad Haddin, the vice-captain, struck a similarly insistent tone about the health of the team. “We’ve been going in the right direction since day one of the tour,” he said. “My stance hasn’t changed. Disappointing result in first Test. Nice to get close but we want to win. I’m comfortable with where things are. Love to see a couple of guys names on the board and get a win here. Don’t think that brought us tighter. The group has been fine since day one of the tour.”Since I’ve been back everything has been fine. Day one was exciting and that hasn’t changed. DL has done a wonderful job like all staff and players. Ashes is as good as it gets. All the other stuff is white noise. It hasn’t affected the side. Darren Lehmann is the coach of Australia. That won’t change. We’re here to play an Ashes campaign, and our job is to get on with this.”
