ten Doeschate ton seals Essex win

A round-up of the third round of games in the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition

Cricinfo staff03-May-2010Derbyshire’s return to Leek after a gap of 18 years ended in defeat when the fastest century of the season from Ryan ten Doeschate carried Essex to a five-wicket victory. Although the Falcons rattled up 299 for seven – their highest total in a 40 over match – ten Doeschate tore the game from their grasp after the Eagles had slipped to 64 for 4, chasing a revised target of 247 from 30 overs.Somerset won their second successive Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Lancashire at Old Trafford by 42 runs thanks to an impressive display in the field today. Defending 236, Marcus Trescothick’s men were boosted by four wickets for 34 in seven overs from Alfonso Thomas. The experienced South African put the skids under the Lightning with two wickets in the 35th over of their chase – the first of the batting powerplay – to reduce them to 174 for 6. They were just two of five wickets lost by the hosts for 12 runs in 13 balls as they fell from 173 for 4 to 185 for 9, and subsided to 193 all out in the 38th.Steve Davies came back to haunt Worcestershire yet again as Surrey chalked up their second Clydesdale Bank 40 victory of the season by 30 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method at New Road. The 23-year-old wicketkeeper led a successful run chase when adding a fluent 81 from 55 balls to the 206 he scored in two innings in the Championship meeting with his former county at Whitgift School last month.James Kirtley took four wickets in eight balls to help end a brave challenge by the Unicorns and give Sussex their second Group A win in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at Hove. The 35-year-old fast bowler did the damage in the 37th over as the Unicorns’ bid to reach a target of 256 ran out of steam. Josh Knappett hit the first ball of the over to long off, Wes Durston was caught behind off the fourth delivery, after making 51 off 53 balls, and Glenn Querl was yorked off the final ball of the over.Injury-hit Durham Dynamos claimed top spot in Group C with a convincing win over Leicestershire Foxes in their Clydesdale Bank 40 clash at Grace Road. Chasing a revised target of 176 in 26 overs, the Foxes could only manage 154 for eight as they lost by 26 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis system.

Sunderland fans slam Embleton vs Bolton

Many Sunderland fans were left slamming the display of Elliot Embleton in their 6-0 loss away at Bolton Wanderers in League One on Saturday afternoon.

It was a day to forget for manager Lee Johnson and his team, in what could turn out to be a very damaging defeat in the race for automatic promotion up to the Championship.

Embleton was just one of a number of poor performers for the Stadium of Light faithful, missing with both of his shots at goal, while he also failed to record a single successful dribble and lost possession of the ball eight times (SofaScore).

He also recorded fewer touches than his own goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, highlighting his lack of impact from an attacking point of view.

Sunderland fans slam Embleton

These Black Cats slammed his performance on Twitter, with one SAFC supporter going as far as to claim that he was a ‘passenger’ in the match, criticism which is certainly backed by the numbers:

“Gooch, Embleton awful. Offer nothing”

“Elliot Embleton did absolutely nothing in that half. A passenger far too often for long spells in games.”

“Can’t believe I haven’t seen anyone talk about how bad Embleton has been recently it’s like playing with 10 men. He takes the kick off then just disappears for 10 minute intervals”

VB badge kiss is very Bollinger

In less than four months, Doug Bollinger has become the most important bowler in Australia’s Test team but he still hasn’t perfected his celebrations

In less than four months, Doug Bollinger has become the most important bowler in Australia’s Test team but he still hasn’t perfected his celebrations. When he completed his second Test five-for, he looked down and kissed his shirt, hesitated for a second as he realised he’d actually got the VB sponsor’s logo, and tried to recover by switching sides and finding the Australian badge. He laughed it off. He’s used to doing that. He did the badge-kissing thing in Perth in December, but joked it was only because he’d seen someone else do it. He was asked in the lead-up to this game how his hairpiece would stand up in the Wellington wind and said: “Next question”.He bugs his team-mates by repeating the same joke over and over in the change-rooms: “Two fish are in a tank and one says to the other ‘how do you drive this thing?'” He would be a fun but exhausting man to be around.Fortunately, there is more to Bollinger than a unique personality. His seven wickets so far in the Wellington Test put Australia firmly in control and it continued his outstanding summer in the five-day game. Since returning to the team at the start of December, he has collected 32 breakthroughs at 18.06, easily the most of any Australian player in that time.Mitchell Johnson keeps finding victims and Nathan Hauritz has discovered his niche but Bollinger has become the spearhead. He is the man to whom Ricky Ponting turns when a change in momentum is required, or to convert a couple of wickets into a collapse. He achieved both those feats on the third day, first running through the New Zealand tail to allow Ponting to enforce the follow-on for the second time this season, then breaking an opening stand that had swelled to 70.His speed and accuracy allow batsmen no respite and that was what upset BJ Watling, who had cautiously worked his way to 33 when he was lbw to a ball that pitched in line and straightened, for the second time in the game. His angle soon accounted for Peter Ingram and he edged behind. The 5 for 28 that he secured in the first innings was fitting reward for his persistence. The same energy that nags good-naturedly at his team-mates causes far more worries for his opponents and even late in the afternoon, after a day and a half of bowling, he was still peppering down bouncers and making the batsmen jump.”I’m trying to [intimidate],” Bollinger said. “That’s just how I bowl, I try to be aggressive and bowl in the batsman’s face and make them as uncomfortable as I can. That’s what a fast bowler’s job is to do. I felt really, really good today. I didn’t try to overdo anything. I just feel like the ball is coming out of my hand really well at the moment and I’m just really, really enjoying my cricket.”Bollinger makes otherwise pedestrian periods of Test cricket compulsory viewing. When he’s sprinting in it is impossible to look away for fear of missing a wicket, an appeal or a moment of mirth. This Test has had the lot: 7 for 58, a laughably optimistic appeal (he was the only man to go up for a bump ball return catch and you could sense his team-mates cringe) and a VB kiss that was replayed over and over. The team’s most important bowler is also its most watchable.

Kieswetter century leads England to easy win

Craig Kieswetter confirmed his rich promise as an opening batsman, and ensured he will be making his England debut in the first ODI against Bangladesh at Dhaka on Sunday

Craig Kieswetter confirmed his rich promise as an opening batsman, and ensured he will be making his England debut in the first ODI against Bangladesh at Dhaka on Sunday, while Paul Collingwood continued his fine recent form, as both men cracked rapid centuries to set up a comfortable 112-run victory in England’s first outing of the tour against a BCB XI in Fatullah.Kieswetter launched an impressive batting display by slamming a brutal 143 in 123 balls in his maiden appearance for the senior team, before Collingwood climbed onto the offensive in the closing overs of the innings, as he reached his own hundred from just 66 deliveries. England finished their 50 overs with an imposing total of 370 for 7. In reply, the BCB XI were never in contention, as they finished on 258 for 9, with Graeme Swann claiming 4 for 44.Kieswetter, who was born in Johannesburg, qualified to play for England exactly a week ago. He had not originally been part of England’s one-day squad for the tour of Bangladesh, but was added to the party at the last minute following a series of impressive performances for the England Lions in the UAE, including a matchwinning 81 in a Twenty20 contest against the senior squad in Abu Dhabi last Wednesday.Today he all but doubled that tally with a brilliant display of power-hitting, including four sixes. He opened the batting alongside England’s stand-in captain, Alastair Cook, who made a brisk half-century in a 127-run stand for the first wicket, and though he was fortunate to survive four dropped catches, Kieswetter reached his century from 101 balls before powering on at two runs a ball for the remainder of his stay. Two of his lives were donated by the left-arm seamer, Shafaq Al Zabir, who spilled a pair of caught-and-bowled opportunities in the first hour, and he was later dropped on the boundary’s edge on 80. At the other end, Cook was trapped lbw by Aluaddin Babu shortly after reaching his half-century, who removed Kevin Pietersen for a duck with his very next delivery, albeit to a marginal decision.Luke Wright then survived three chances in a brisk 25, as Collingwood powered along to 109 from 74 balls before becoming one of three late victims for the former Test seamer, Tapash Baishya.Ajmal Shahzad, who enjoyed a dramatic entry into international cricket with two wickets in his first over against Pakistan in Dubai on Saturday, once again made the first breakthrough of the BCB’s reply, as the Test opener, Shahriar Nafees, was bowled for 8 in the fifth over.Swann then followed up with his habitual early wicket, as Mahmudul Hasan picked out a diving Wright for 22, before Nasiruddin Faroq and Roqibul Hasan dug in to carry the BCB reply past 100. But after a change of ends, and an ineffective first foray from the offspinner James Tredwell, Swann returned to pin Faroq lbw for 37 (107 for 3).Naeem Islam went the same way for 40, and Swann completed his haul with the scalp of Ariful Hoq, after being hoisted for two big sixes. With the match drifting to a predictable conclusion, Wright claimed his only wicket of the innings, before Liam Plunkett bagged two in the final over, including the top-scorer, Sharifullah, for 47.

Rangers closing in on James Sands

Rangers are making good progress as they look to sign James Sands on loan from New York City FC, according to The Daily Mail.

The lowdown

Giovanni van Bronckhorst said prior to the January transfer window that he didn’t want his squad to get any smaller. Rangers have agreed to sell Nathan Patterson to Everton for around £16m, with the transfer being completed today.

In Sands, they are pursuing a player who can line out at right-back, although he has predominantly been a defensive midfielder and a centre-back during his career. He is only 21 years old but has already been capped seven times by the United States senior team.

The latest

According to The Daily Mail, talks between Rangers and New York City FC over a deal for Sands are said to be ‘advancing well’.

The Gers are hopeful of securing his services on an 18-month loan, running until the end of the 2022/23 season.

The verdict

Sands, who replaced Andrea Pirlo from the substitutes’ bench to make his NYCFC debut in 2017, is one of the outstanding young talents in Major League Soccer. The club have even referred to him as the ‘apprentice’ of the two-time Champions League and 2006 World Cup winner, which is not a bad endorsement at all.

In 2020, he featured on the league’s ’22 under-22 list’, and a year later he was named in the All-Star roster which took on the best players from Liga MX (via MLS), which further highlights his precocious talent.

This could be a tremendous piece of business for Rangers if they pull it off, particularly if they can negotiate an option to buy the American next year.

Myers drops new claim on Digne interest

Everton have made two signings already during this transfer window, with Rafa Benitez not holding back on getting his business at the club done early, but the two incoming additions are not the biggest story at the Merseyside club, with a potential outgoing stealing the headlines.

What’s the word?

News Editor, Alan Myers, has taken to Twitter to claim that a number of Premier League clubs are interested in signing Everton’s Lucas Digne.

Tweeting last night he revealed:

“Chelsea, Newcastle, West Ham and an as yet unnamed fourth Premier League club, are interested in Everton left back Lucas Digne.”

“Napoli are also interested in the £30M rated defender, though the Italian club are only interested in a loan deal with an option to buy.”

It was reported by ESPN last week, that Everton are not interested in a loan deal for the left-back, which was initially rumoured to be the likeliest scenario for the player to join Chelsea to cover their injury issues in the position short term, but now the report suggests that the Toffees want at least £25m for him, with no option for a loan.

Fans will be fuming

Everton fans will surely be fuming at the prospect of the player going to another Premier League club, especially West Ham and Newcastle who are likely to rival the Merseyside club for positions in the league.

Digne had become a fan favourite at the club, with many supporters taking to social media to criticise the decision to sell the frozen out left-back to another Premier League team.

One Toffees fan tweeted;

“Be fuming if Digne goes to another prem team. Just another reason to hate Rafa #RAFAOUT.”

Indeed, it’s easy to see why they’re so livid. The £110k-per-week defender has made 127 appearances for the club, offering up six goals and 20 assists from his defensive position, becoming a senior member of the team.

Thus, losing his quality and experience at the club when they are in this vulnerable phase, struggling to pick up points with only five wins from 18 games, is a huge risk for Benitez.

The Spanish manager has signed a left-back already over the last few days, Vitaliy Mykolenko has joined from Dynamo Kyiv, but with the lack of Premier League experience and his lack of connection with the defensive line at the Toffees due to only joining the team this week, it shouldn’t be expected for the Ukrainian to make an instant impact.

Everton have no room for error at this point in the season, and disjointing the team by selling key players, puts the manager at potential risk of costing the side more points in the league, only further fuelling fans to turn against him.
