Hamid Hassan: ‘If I play for a county I’d want it to be with Lancashire because Andrew Flintoff plays for them and he’s my favourite player’•International Cricket Council

Hamid Hassan is still soaking up the achievements of the weekend when he helped Afghanistan qualify for the ICC World Twenty20 as they won the qualifying event in Dubai. Hassan, one of the team’s key bowlers, played a leading role in the triumph with a tournament haul of 12 wickets at 11.14, including 3 for 14 in the Super Fours victory against USA, and has since been savouring the messages of congratulation on his blog and Facebook page. While events in Afghanistan are making the news headlines as coalition forces launch a huge offensive against the Taliban, the cricketer’s success a few hours away in the Middle East gave much-need opportunity for some joy. The trophy, which was secured with a thumping eight-wicket victory against Ireland, capped a remarkable rise through the cricket ranks for a side that two years ago were playing in Division Five of the World Cricket League. In March last year they narrowly missed out qualifying for the 2011 World Cup although did enough to earn ODI status and this time ensured they didn’t pull up short of the main prize.”I’ve got a lot of messages on my Facebook fan page and have lots of calls from back home,” Hassan told Cricinfo from Sharjah, where the team are now preparing for one-day internationals against Canada. “Everyone was very happy and when we won the final two nights ago they all came out onto the road and celebrated all night until about three or four in the morning. Everyone is waiting for us to go home so we can celebrate together.”It’s a dream come true for us and a fantastic achievement for Afghanistan so all the people at home are very happy and are waiting for us to come back to Afghanistan,” he added. “Nobody knows about Afghanistan for sports so this is a good step for us to get a title and qualify for the World Cup to play against sides like India and South Africa. Everyone is happy and just wanted to celebrate.”And taking on two of the strongest sides in the world holds no fears for Hassan who is eager to pit his skills against the likes of Virender Sehwag. “I’ll try my best to get him out and hope he doesn’t get many runs against us,” he said.Afghanistan’s story is so remarkable that anything now seems possible for this group of players who have defied huge odds to sit among the top table. Hassan’s ambitions certainly hold no bounds and having fulfilled one dream of reaching the Caribbean he also hopes to be able to continue his career overseas, either in England or the IPL.”I’d love to play county cricket in England and I’m always looking for a chance,” he said. “Or if I get a chance in the IPL I’ll do my best. If I play for a county I’d want it to be with Lancashire because Andrew Flintoff plays for them and he’s my favourite player.”Hassan bowled to Flintoff in the nets at Lord’s while he was an MCC Young Cricketer, but although the England allrounder now lives in Dubai Hassan didn’t have the chance to meet his hero. However, he hopes that in the near future Flintoff will be able to watch an Afghanistan match.”I met him when I was with MCC and practised with him for four days at Lord’s. I bowled at him and he was a very good guy,” Hassan said. “He’s a very nice and a cool man. I’d love to have met him in Dubai but I couldn’t find time out to go and see him and also he didn’t have time to come and see how the Afghanistan team were playing. I wish he would come and see us play.”While he is still idolising Flintoff, Hassan himself is rapidly becoming a national hero back home and hopes to inspire a new generation of Afghanistan cricketers with, Hassan believes, the promise of a better life.”We have had a very short period of cricket but have had a big achievement for the country so lots of players are coming through in the Under-10 and Under-11 age groups,” he said. “They are now playing cricket on the streets, roads and everywhere. People are loving cricket now and I hope after that we have a good future for our youngsters.”

Kieswetter century leads England to easy win

Craig Kieswetter confirmed his rich promise as an opening batsman, and ensured he will be making his England debut in the first ODI against Bangladesh at Dhaka on Sunday, while Paul Collingwood continued his fine recent form, as both men cracked rapid centuries to set up a comfortable 112-run victory in England’s first outing of the tour against a BCB XI in Fatullah.Kieswetter launched an impressive batting display by slamming a brutal 143 in 123 balls in his maiden appearance for the senior team, before Collingwood climbed onto the offensive in the closing overs of the innings, as he reached his own hundred from just 66 deliveries. England finished their 50 overs with an imposing total of 370 for 7. In reply, the BCB XI were never in contention, as they finished on 258 for 9, with Graeme Swann claiming 4 for 44.Kieswetter, who was born in Johannesburg, qualified to play for England exactly a week ago. He had not originally been part of England’s one-day squad for the tour of Bangladesh, but was added to the party at the last minute following a series of impressive performances for the England Lions in the UAE, including a matchwinning 81 in a Twenty20 contest against the senior squad in Abu Dhabi last Wednesday.Today he all but doubled that tally with a brilliant display of power-hitting, including four sixes. He opened the batting alongside England’s stand-in captain, Alastair Cook, who made a brisk half-century in a 127-run stand for the first wicket, and though he was fortunate to survive four dropped catches, Kieswetter reached his century from 101 balls before powering on at two runs a ball for the remainder of his stay. Two of his lives were donated by the left-arm seamer, Shafaq Al Zabir, who spilled a pair of caught-and-bowled opportunities in the first hour, and he was later dropped on the boundary’s edge on 80. At the other end, Cook was trapped lbw by Aluaddin Babu shortly after reaching his half-century, who removed Kevin Pietersen for a duck with his very next delivery, albeit to a marginal decision.Luke Wright then survived three chances in a brisk 25, as Collingwood powered along to 109 from 74 balls before becoming one of three late victims for the former Test seamer, Tapash Baishya.Ajmal Shahzad, who enjoyed a dramatic entry into international cricket with two wickets in his first over against Pakistan in Dubai on Saturday, once again made the first breakthrough of the BCB’s reply, as the Test opener, Shahriar Nafees, was bowled for 8 in the fifth over.Swann then followed up with his habitual early wicket, as Mahmudul Hasan picked out a diving Wright for 22, before Nasiruddin Faroq and Roqibul Hasan dug in to carry the BCB reply past 100. But after a change of ends, and an ineffective first foray from the offspinner James Tredwell, Swann returned to pin Faroq lbw for 37 (107 for 3).Naeem Islam went the same way for 40, and Swann completed his haul with the scalp of Ariful Hoq, after being hoisted for two big sixes. With the match drifting to a predictable conclusion, Wright claimed his only wicket of the innings, before Liam Plunkett bagged two in the final over, including the top-scorer, Sharifullah, for 47.

No domingo, o Grêmio comandado pelo auxiliar Alexandre Mendes deverá terPaulo Victor; Léo Moura, Thyere, Bressan e Leonardo; Michel, Cristian, Kaio, Cícero e Everton; Jael.

USA to host New Zealand v Sri Lanka internationals

New Zealand and Sri Lanka will cross a new frontier when they meet each other in three Twenty20 internationals in the USA in May

New Zealand and Sri Lanka will cross a new frontier when they meet each other in three Twenty20 internationals in the USA in May.The games will take place at Central Broward Regional Park Cricket Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida, which has been approved by the ICC. It is the first time two Full Members will have met in an official match on US soil and it follows the signing of a strategic partnership between the USA Cricket Association (USACA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) last year.”Given the door to cricket has been opened to investment through the sale of Indian Premier League franchises, this model is a logical step to raising the capital required to take cricket in the US to another level,” said Justin Vaughan, NZC’s chief executive. “The structure proposed is a wonderful opportunity for someone to get in on the ground floor, particularly given the growing level of interest in the US cricket market.”A delighted Don Lockerbie, CEO of USACA, said the move was the first of what he hoped would be many such initiatives, adding the US national side would participate in some warm-up matches as well.”We are experiencing increasing demand for ‘Destination USA’ cricket events from many Full Member ICC countries and the Sri Lanka v New Zealand series will bring – as forecasted – world-class cricket to the USA,” he said. “Through the strategic collaboration with NZC we now have the additional administrative support and knowledge base to be able to commercialise these opportunities and ultimately grow the revenue streams from one of the world’s largest advertising markets.”Looking ahead, Lockerbie added the matches were “a small indication of the amount of cricket content under consideration with our partners at NZC. We will be meeting with potential investors and event developers over the next few weeks and months to keep building our momentum. The interest is already high from potential investors in India and the US, and this is very encouraging.”

Predicted 2022 Aston Villa XI after January

With four wins and three defeats in his first seven Premier League games as Aston Villa manager, the upcoming January transfer window will provide Steven Gerrard with the opportunity to make his mark on the squad, whether that’s with some new faces being brought in or some of the current squad making their way out.Even though the Midlands club spent a significant sum of money to bring in the likes of Emi Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings during last summer’s transfer window, it seems unlikely that no business will take place in January.

What could Villa’s starting XI look like by the end of January 2022? Here’s our prediction…

In goal, despite reportedly being of interest to Manchester United, we don’t think Villa would entertain the prospect of allowing Emiliano Martinez to leave in January, especially as he has played in all but one of their league games so far this season.

In defence, the only change we could see potentially happening would be the inclusion of current Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez, who has been linked with a move to Villa Park next month, which we feel could be tempting for the 24-year-old if he can get regular game-time under Gerrard’s guidance.

If Villa manage to secure the signing of the Reds defender, we think he will slot into Villa’s backline alongside the likes of Matt Targett, Tyrone Mings and Matty Cash.

In midfield, with Marvelous Nakamba out for a significant period of time through injury, we can see Villa heading back to Southampton, from whom they signed Danny Ings from in the summer, and securing the signature of Oriol Romeu, who has reportedly been of interest to Villa in recent months.

Alongside current Villa midfielders Douglas Luiz and John McGinn, we think Gerrard will raid his old club Rangers and sign 25-year-old Joe Aribo, who the current Villa boss has called “fantastic” in the past, as an extra option in his squad behind the current strike duo of Ings and Ollie Watkins.

Whether or not Villa add the aforementioned players to their squad next month, Gerrard may still have confidence in his current crop of players to end the season on a high and potentially in the top half of the Premier League.

Haddin not a believer in umpire reviews

Brad Haddin remains unconvinced of the umpire review system’s merits

Brad Haddin: “As a keeper you do have the best view but I don’t want that pressure of getting the wrong or right one”•Getty Images

Brad Haddin remains unconvinced of the umpire review system’s merits and would prefer the on-field officials to either have sole control or hand over all decisions to technology to eliminate “grey areas”. As the man standing behind the stumps, Haddin has the best view in the Australian team but has not yet been persuaded by what he has seen.Nor is he keen to take the responsibility of using his vantage point to advise the captain Ricky Ponting, who wasted both of Australia’s reviews early in West Indies’ second innings in Adelaide on unsuccessful caught-behind decisions, which are difficult to prove on replay. Ponting remains optimistic that the system can improve the game, West Indies’ captain Chris Gayle is against it, and Haddin has yet to be sold on the idea.”I wasn’t a great fan of it to start with, I think it’s designed to take the real howlers out of the game,” Haddin said. “Personally I am happy with either all the power the umpire has or giving everything to technology and referring all decisions. It’s still a bit of a grey area at the moment and we’ll have to see how it goes over the coming months.”As a keeper you do have the best view but I don’t want that pressure of getting the wrong or right one. It’s a funny one because we thought we had a couple of obvious ones in Adelaide that got turned down, but the bottom line is we are still taking 20 wickets a Test match without the referral system. I am not a great believer in it.”Ponting asked the umpires for their thoughts on the review system after Adelaide and in the nets at the WACA on Monday he and Billy Bowden had a long discussion. Bowden was flown to Perth to officiate in the third Test after Mark Benson went home to England following the first day in Adelaide. Benson said his decision to withdraw from the Test was entirely due to health reasons and denied reports that it was due to his dissatisfaction with the review system.
