Sunderland have the opportunity to pull off a shock and reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup tonight as they face Arsenal away from home.

The Black Cats face the Premier League side two divisions above them and, therefore, will go into the game as the heavy underdogs and may be able to play with freedom without the weight of expectation weighing them down.

They come into the game off the back of a 1-1 draw with Ipswich at Portman Road in League One at the weekend, leaving Lee Johnson’s side third in the table.

How many changes will Johnson make? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make three alterations to the side, with Elliot Embleton, Denver Hume and Corry Evans coming in.

Leon Dajaku is reportedly set to miss out on the clash due to injury, which opens up a spot on the right for someone to come in. Hume came on to replace him at right wing-back at Portman Road and could slot in for him tonight at The Emirates, after winning four of his seven duels and completing three tackles despite playing in an unfamiliar position.

In midfield, Evans is reportedly fit for the game and could make his return. He could start ahead of Carl Winchester after the Northern Irishman’s worrying showing at the weekend. As per SofaScore, he lost four of his five ground duels and was dribbled past twice, without making a single tackle, interception, block or clearance.

This shows that he was too easily beaten in the middle of the park and, against a Premier League side, Johnson may want the experience of Evans to solidify the team. The 31-year-old has averaged 2.5 tackles and interceptions per game in League One, showing that he has the defensive nous to make interventions.

Finally, Alex Pritchard could be axed from the tip of the midfield. The £30k-per-week flop struggled against Ipswich, as he failed to create a single chance whilst winning just one of his four individual duels, and could now lose his place in the team.

Embleton, meanwhile, came off the bench and managed one key pass and won two of his three duels in just 27 minutes on the pitch. That cameo may be enough to convince Johnson to axe Pritchard from the XI in order to start the former Blackpool loanee.

Tottenham Hotspur are proving to be tough competition in the race for the signature of Fiorentina striker Dušan Vlahović and are considered to be ahead of other prospective suitors, as per Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

The Lowdown

Over the course of the past year, the Serbian striker has been linked with a myriad of clubs. The 21-year-old prospect has received widespread attention across Europe after scoring 15 goals in 17 Serie A games this season, and former Manchester City ace Stevan Jovetić has even been quoted saying that “he will be the best striker of the next few years with Erling Haaland”.

The Serbia international’s contract in Florence is set to expire in the summer of 2023. This means that the Serie A club may be forced to sell him by next summer if they want to avoid the possibility of him leaving on a free transfer the following year.

Despite him having a current market value of £45m, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso will demand a fee of at least €70m (£59.5m) for Vlahović in the January transfer window.

The Latest

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are proving to be tough competition in the race for Vlahović’s signature, and they are considered to be above other contenders in their pursuit of the 21-year-old, or ‘above all’ as the report put it.

Italian duo Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are believed to have identified the Fiorentina attacker as the perfect addition to the Spurs squad.

Tottenham face competition from Juventus, who have also targeted Vlahović in their search of a new number nine. It is reported that Spurs have a vastly superior budget to the Turin club, which could prove to be the deciding factor if the player is allowed to leave in the January transfer window.

The Verdict

With Harry Kane having scored just one Premier League goal in 13 games this season, it may be essential that Tottenham bring in a striker to bolster their attacking options in their bid for Champions League qualification.

Vlahović could be the answer to Conte’s Kane dilemma, with the Serbian netting a goal in every 101 minutes this season.

However, despite this encouraging report, it could be difficult for Spurs to secure the services of the prolific Serbian striker, as a number of European giants are set to battle it out for the player. Also, the likes of Juventus can offer him Champions League football, a selling point that Tottenham don’t have.

If there’s one position that Aston Villa have plenty of options, it’s in attack. That has left striker Keinan Davis with a problem because to him, a lack of game time is not a good thing in any way.

What’s the talk?

During an appearance on The Beautiful Game Podcast, Davis revealed that he is open to leaving the Premier League club on loan on January and would even consider dropping to the Championship for more regular game time.

He said, “To look at, it [his situation] doesn’t look too good. The minutes I have got have been like eight or nine minutes, but it’s all appearances. I know it, the coaches know it and everyone in football knows it (how important it is to play),” Davis said.

“For me, I would say I need a good clean run of games whether that’s at Villa or somewhere else just to get experience and get goals and stuff like that.

“Depending on what the club say, that’s something I would like to do, to play more consistent games, so yeah,” Davis concluded.

“For a player like me, I’m still young. I’m trying to find my way. Going down to the Championship, I wouldn’t see that as a step back at all.”

Not a loss for Villa

The Villa academy graduate made an impression on the first team when he broke through during an injury crisis in the 2019/20 season, making 18 appearances as Dean Smith’s side struggled for goals but eventually avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth.

The following season he found himself down the pecking order again after Ollie Watkins’ arrival from Brentford but he scored his first (and only) Premier League goal to date against West Brom with an injury-time equaliser. This season, however, he has featured for just 11 minutes in the Premier League and is keen to get more action after the arrival of Danny Ings.

At 23-years-old, game time is key for his development and it’s quite evident that he isn’t in the first-team plans of new manager Steven Gerrard having yet to feature at all under him.

It would do absolutely no harm to Villa’s aspirations this season to let him go and play, while potentially putting him in the shop window for a permanent move away if needed to bring in some cash and get his £45k-per-week wages off the books.

His physique and physical style of play have previously seen him described as a “big presence” upfront and he could do well with a run of games elsewhere.

After all, his tally of just six senior goals in 86 games is nowhere near good enough. With Villa looking at signing yet another forward in Julian Alvarez this summer, Davis must be ruthlessly axed to make room.

An update has emerged regarding the availability of three key Rangers players prior to heading away with their country for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

What’s the talk?

According to The Scotsman, the Gers are set to hold talks with the Nigerian FA to discuss whether or not Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun will be able to play in the Old Firm derby at the start of January.

The report claims that the trio are all due to jet away with Nigeria ahead of AFCON on December 27 and would miss the derby clash on January 2, with Rangers now set for discussions over a deal to keep them around for that match before releasing them for international duty.

GVB would love it

Ross Wilson could pull off a Rangers masterclass by convincing the Nigerian FA to hold off on calling up the trio before the match against Celtic. Giovanni van Bronckhorst would surely love it if he could have all of them available for the game, as they are all valuable members of the squad.

SofaScore have Aribo (5th), Balogun (9th) and Bassey (10th) all within the club’s top 10 performers in terms of average ratings in the Premiership this season. They have all averaged a score of 7.03 or higher in the league, showing that they have been performing consistently to an impressive standard so far this term.

This highlights their importance to the side and why it would be a masterclass from Wilson if he is able to successfully negotiate their availability against Celtic. Van Bronckhorst will want all of his best players at his disposal for that game and the statistics suggest that all three fall into that category.

Bassey, in particular, has shot to prominence under the Dutchman since the 43-year-old replaced Steven Gerrard at the helm. The left-back has played in the centre of defence over the last five competitive matches and the Gers have only conceded two goals in that time.

Hopefully, Wilson will be able to convince the Nigerian FA to allow the trio to play against Celtic in these crunch talks and Rangers will have a full squad available. Whilst the three will still miss an as yet undetermined period of time during AFCON, having them in the team against the Hoops could be a major boost as they are the Gers’ closest title rivals as it stands.
