West Indies clinch tight win in low-scorer

West Indies captain Merissa Aguilleira’s unbeaten 34 helped the team clinch a narrow two-wicket win off the last ball against Sri Lanka

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Mar-2013
ScorecardWest Indies captain Merissa Aguilleira’s unbeaten 34 helped the team clinch a narrow two-wicket win off the last ball against Sri Lanka in the first of the three Twenty20s. In a match in which only four batsmen got into double-digits scores, Aguilleira’s innings turned out to be the difference.Sri Lanka chose to bat, but were in trouble soon as they lost their top five with only 39 on the board. They struggled the most against Shakera Selman, who had figures of 2 for 14, and Shanel Daley, who didn’t get a wicket but gave away only 10 runs in her four overs. Only two of Sri Lanka’s batsmen – Eshani Kaushalya and Dilani Manodara – got into double figures and helped the team crawl to 87.West Indies’ innings followed the same pattern as Sri Lanka’s for the most part. They were reduced to 27 for 4 after Kaushalya picked three wickets in her first three overs. Stafanie Taylor scored a vital 25 and when she was out with 29 runs still needed, the match hung in balance. Aguilleira saw three more wickets go down at the other end, but held her end and hit a boundary off the last ball when they required two runs.

Shakib the top pick at BPL auction

Shakib Al Hasan has been the most expensive buy in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League auction, bought for $365,000 by Dhaka

Mohammad Isam20-Dec-2012

Six teams showed interest in Shakib Al Hasan who was picked by Dhaka after a tiebreaker•BPL T20

Shakib Al Hasan became the most expensive buy in the Bangladesh Premier League when he was acquired by Dhaka for $365,000 in one of the many tiebreakers in the day. Imran Nazir, the second most valuable player at $280,000, was bought by Chittagong in another tight bidding battle. As a result, the auction lasted nearly eight hours with its share of drama. The start of the auction was also the business end of it, as the golden category players – both local and foreign – were fought over. With small pay brackets, the seven BPL franchises often locked up at the highest price quickly, but then had to write up their price on a piece of paper, which was then read out by the auction commissioner, the highest bidder winning the player’s services.Half an hour into the auction, six franchises hit the $75,000 ceiling for Shakib. But when the written-up amounts were revealed, Dhaka’s bid was $152,000 more than their nearest rival Rajshahi, who had quoted $213,000 while newcomers Rangpur were third with a $160,000 bid.Shakib, however, will only get $162,000 because according to the league rules, anything above the ceiling (in this case $290,000 more than $75,000) gets distributed between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (60%), the player (30%) and Game On Sports (10%), tournament’s event management firm. Tamim Iqbal would have joined Shakib but Rajshahi won the coin toss after the two franchises were tied on $165,000 even after the tiebreaker. There was more drama when Nasir Hossain’s turn came. Sylhet had begun their celebrations after they were announced winners, but the commissioner belatedly realised that one last envelope had remained unopened. As it turned out, the last bid was the highest one. Rangpur, who had bid $208,137 against Sylhet’s $151,000, got the services of Nasir and left the Sylhet owners in a shock.Rangpur threw more interesting numbers during the afternoon. They bought left-handed batsman Junaid Siddique for $67,757 and left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak for $92,777. They also bid $72,772 for Shahzaib Hassan and $89,792 for Ahmed Shehzad unsuccessfully. The trend inspired Khulna too as they made a successful bid of $51,105 for Farhad Reza. The auction for the B category of foreign players went by quietly but the interest picked up again for the local players in the same category. There was a tiebreaker for almost every name; many going into the six-figure mark much against their track records. Rookie seamer Abul Hasan fetched $121,000 from Rajshahi while left-arm spinner Elias Sunny went for $106,000 to Barisal after a six-way tie on $50,000. Sylhet got young batsman Mominul Haque for $127,000 beating four other teams. The nature of the bidding was such that teams had to make blind guesses, making some bids lop-sided. For example in case of Abul, the next best offer behind Dhaka’s $121,000 was Khulna’s $53,000.After a frenetic auction day, the major challenge for the BPL will be to ensure that the players are paid according to the agreed schedule. Each player will receive 25% of his payments before the tournament starts on January 18 and the next 25% by the end of the tournament in mid-February. The other 50% will have to be paid within six months from the end of BPL 2013. The specter of unpaid player wages in BPL’s first season would loom over the hype until these payments are finally made.SquadsBarisal Burners: Alok Kapali, Shafiul Islam, Elias Sunny, Shuvagata Hom, Shabbir Rahman, Ifthikar Ahmed, Jubair Ahmed, Alauddin Babu, Al Amin, Nazmul Apu, Saeed Ajmal, Sunil Narine, Brad Hodge, Azhar Mahmood, Umar Gul, Kamran Akmal, Phil Mustard, Kabir Ali, Hammad AzamSylhet Royals: Mushfiqur Rahim, Sohag Gazi, Mominul Haque, Nazmul Hossain, Imtiaz Hossain, Nazmul Hossain Milon, Jupiter Ghosh, Suhrawadi Shuvo, Tino Best, Andre Russell, Dwayne Smith, Azeem Ghumman, Zulfiqur Babar, Hamilton Masakadza, Babar Azam, Sohel Ahmed, Paul StirlingDuronto Rajshahi: Tamim Iqbal, Ziaur Rahman, Jahurul Islam, Abul Hasan, Farhad Hossain, Moktar Ali, Taijul Islam, Shaker Ahmed, Monir Hossain, Marlon Samuels, Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Sami, Shahzaib Hasan, Alex Hales, Khalid Latif, Sean ErvineRangpur Riders: Nasir Hossain, Abdur Razzak, Junaid Siddique, Imrul Kayes, Mehedi Maruf, Shamshur Rahman, Taposh Ghosh, Dhiman Ghosh, Mohammad Sharif, Fidel Edwards, Kevin O’Brien, Sharjil Khan, Anwar Ali, Raja Ali DarDhaka Gladiators: Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Ashraful, Anamul Haque, Mashrafe Mortaza, Raqibul Hasan, Mosharraf Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Litton Das, Shahid Afridi, Luke Wright, Owais Shah, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lasith Malinga, Joshua Cobb, Chris Liddle, Darren Stevens, Kaushal LokuarachchiKhulna Royal Bengal: Nazimuddin, Shahriar Nafees, Farhad Reza, Shahadat Hossain, Mizanur Rahman, Mohammad Mithun, Dollar Mahmud, Sanjamul Islam, Nabil Samad, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Awaiz Zia, Umar Amin, Ahmed Shehzad, Riki Wessels, Haris Sohail, Bilawal Bhatti, Shane HarwoodChittagong Kings: Mahmudullah, Naeem Islam, Rubel Hossain, Arafat Sunny, Enamul Haque jnr, Aftab Ahmed, Marshall Ayub, Nurul Hasan, Imran Nazir, Dwayne Bravo, Wahab Riaz, Ravi Bopara, Ryan Ten Doeschate, Jacob Oram, Jason Roy, Kevon Cooper, Brendon Taylor, Saeed Anwar jnr

Shami's ten wickets give Bengal win

A round-up of the seventh round of Ranji Trophy’s Group A matches on December 17, 2012

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Dec-2012
Scorecard
Bengal overcame early and late wobbles in their chase of 181 to seal victory over Hyderabad by four wickets at Eden Gardens. Bengal were 47 for 3 at one stage, before opener Rohan Banerjee and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha revived the innings. Hyderabad kept chipping away, though. Anwar Ahmed had Banerjee caught behind and bowled Laxmi Shukla to reduce Bengal to 167 for 6, but Saha was around to guide them to victory. Bengal nearly doubled their points tally from seven to 13, and had to thank the fast bowler Shami Ahmed for that. After taking four wickets in the Hyderabad first innings, Shami grabbed six more in the second innings as the visitors could add only nine runs to their overnight 172 for 7 this morning. It was 22-year old Shami’s second ten-wicket haul in 15 first-class games.
ScorecardYuvraj Singh, back to the domestic grind after being left out of the Test squad, and Jiwanjot Singh, the in-form opener, hit centuries as Punjab fought back in their follow-on innings in Gwalior. Jiwanjot hit his fourth hundred of his debut season, while Yuvraj smashed 15 fours and four sixes on his way to 131 off 150 deliveries. The duo knocked off the deficit of 175, and had started to build a lead when Jiwanjot fell to Gaurav Yadav, playing his second first-class game. Yadav removed the Punjab captain Mandeep Singh and Uday Kaul cheaply next. When Anand Rajan had Yuvraj caught, Punjab were 277 for 6, a lead of 102. Amitoze Singh hit a breezy fifty and ensured Punjab had a decent lead of 179 by stumps.
Scorecard
Railways medium-pacer Anureet Singh took a five-for as Rajasthan were blown away for 135 in their first innings in reply to Railways’ 405 in Bhubaneshwar. The highest any Rajasthan batsman managed was 27, by Ashok Menaria. Ranjitkumar Mali picked up 3 for 42, including the big wickets of Menaria and Rashmi Parida. Railways, with only seven points from five games and in search of an outright win, enforced the follow-on. Rajasthan batted much better the second time, opener Sourabh Chouhan leading the way with a fifty. Robin Bist and Menaria had put on an unbroken 44 for the third wicket by stumps, but Rajasthan still needed another 117 to avoid an innings defeat.
Scorecard
Mumbai were set to take a huge first-innings lead on a slow day in Rajkot as Saurashtra lost eight wickets in pursuit of the visitors’ mammoth total. Ajit Agarkar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Javed Khan and Iqbal Abdulla took two wickets each. The home captain Jaydev Shah made 60 and there were a couple of thirties but the major contribution was from Aarpit Vasavada, who was unbeaten on 83 off 231 deliveries. But unfortunately for Saurashtra, there is little support left for him at the other end.

L! Espresso: Palmeiras revela perfil novo e bem calculado no mercado

MatériaMais Notícias

Arthur Cabral, 20 anos. Carlos Eduardo, 22. Matheus Fernandes, 20. Felipe Pires, 23.

Northamptonshire have confirmed that Jack Brooks, the pace bowler, has been allowed to utilise a get-out clause in his contract to further his international ambitions.Brooks, who made a late start to his professional career having come through Minor County cricket, played for England Lions against the West Indians this season on his home ground. In the Championship he took 23 wickets at 35.69 in a campaign disrupted by injury and overall has 118 first-class wickets at 28.95″I’ve taken this decision to leave Northants because I want to compete at the highest level possible,” Brooks said. “The opportunities being offered to me are too good to turn down, and I owe it to myself to explore all avenues as I continue my quest for international honours.””I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Northants and fully appreciate the support I’ve been given by all at the club. Hopefully, I’ll be remembered for my performances and wholehearted approach to the game.”Head coach David Ripley said: “I am saddened by Jack’s departure, we will miss him both on the field and in the dressing room as he is a real character. He is striving for international honours and domestic trophies, which I believe are both achievable here, but I fully understand and respect his decision to leave. We wish Jack all the best in his future.”David Smith, the chief executive, added that this was a situation clubs are becoming used to these days. “Jack leaving us is a reflection of our more mobile cricket society and of more flexible employment laws that allow players to move between county cricket clubs on a more regular basis than in the past.”The club wants to place on record its appreciation of Jack’s service over the past four years and wish him all the very best for the future. Jack has been a very popular member of our dressing room.”

Thakor the saviour for Leicestershire

Shiv Thakor faced more than 100 balls for his unbeaten 39 as Leicestershire held out for a draw against Northamptonshire

Jon Culley at Northampton13-Aug-2012

There are still four matches left but Northamptonshire may have seen their chance of a late run for promotion slip away with their failure to see off their east Midlands neighbours. The draw leaves them 15 points adrift of the two teams in second place, which is probably a gap too far at this stage, although they take one of them – Hampshire – at West End on Wednesday.Leicestershire owed their escape to Shiv Thakor, whose influence on the whole contest has identified him as a player with a big future. An England player at Under-17 and Under-19 level, although overlooked for the ongoing Under-19 World Cup in Australia, the 18-year-old effectively saved the follow-on in the first innings and followed up with a wonderfully mature display of defiance to stave off defeat. He finished unbeaten on 39, having batted for two and a half hours under no little pressure as Northamptonshire, having given themselves 88 overs to bowl Leicestershire out, chipped away relentlessly in search of ten wickets. They finished with eight, having whittled out every recognised batsmen bar one, the teenager. Thakor faced 105 balls and was notably impressive against James Middlebrook, the offspinner, rarely putting a foot wrong even with six or even seven fielders around the bat, as was the case while he batted out the last five deliveries of the contest. As in the first innings, he teamed up most effectively with Claude Henderson, Leicestershire’s 40-year-old left-arm spinner. Their unlikely alliance put on 52 this time, more importantly using up 18 overs. His focus turns now to his A-level results, due on Thursday, with offers to weigh up from Durham, Cardiff and Loughborough Universities.Phil Whitticase, Leicestershire’s head coach, is enthused by what the youngster, who also bowls useful medium pace, might become.”He gave a really mature and responsible performance in the first innings and to do it again in the second innings, under that kind of pressure, when you lose a couple of wickets and find yourself taking the lead role, showed a maturity beyond his years,” Whitticase said. “He is mentally strong, too, and when you get that in someone so young it can only speak well of him.”He has been in our system since he was eight and has been brought up the right way. He has worked with Trevor Ward, at Uppingham School, where he has been since before his GCSEs, and he has been in the England system, too, so he has been taught a lot about how to play spin bowling, how to cope with sledging. But it is one thing talking about it, quite another to actually do it in high pressure moments.”He has a big decision to make this week. From our point of view, if he decides to defer university a while and concentrate on cricket it would be great but I’m not going to try to make his decision for him. I know that education is an important part of his life.”Impressive though Thakor was, however, it was an opportunity missed by Northamptonshire, who may rue their decision to bat on for 25 minutes on the final morning. Leicestershire finished so far away from the 353 they needed, in theory, to move off the bottom of the table that it was a mystery why Andrew Hall wasted eight overs by not declaring with their overnight lead of 311. By continuing, he at least gave a seemingly out-of-sorts Robbie Joseph time to take his only wicket of the match (26 overs, 1 for 138) by bowling Rob Newton, but seemed to serve no one else’s interests.Nonetheless, the Northamptonshire bowlers gave themselves a chance of finishing the job. After ten of the 88 overs, they had Leicestershire 30 for 2, which would have been 28 for 3 had Alex Wakely not let a chance slip through his hands at third slip. Michael Thornely had driven Andrew Hall off the back foot straight to mid-off and Will Jones, who despatched David Willey with a cracking drive through the covers for four, edged to edge to second slip two balls later. It was Ramnaresh Sarwan who enjoyed the let-off.In the event, it was not a costly miss. Sarwan had added only 11 more runs when, with left-armer Willey bowling round the wicket, he lost his off stump trying to drive a ball that was too full.A half-century from Ned Eckersley offered some measure of resistance, but Matt Boyce could not stay with him long and Leicestershire began to hope that the forecast rain would intervene in their favour. It never came, but Thakor did and stayed, for 40 overs. There was a disappointing blow when Josh Cobb, who played well for his 28, was caught trying to drive Willey and a more predictable one when Wayne White swished at a ball from Middlebrook and was bowled. Seven down entering the final hour, the odds still seemed heavily against Leicestershire’s survival but Thakor and Henderson were resolute. The latter’s dismissal with 16 balls left, deflecting the ball on to his stumps as he tried to leave, caused a flurry of late excitement, but Thakor’s nerve never wavered.
