Simmons and Bishoo give West Indies victory

It’s just one match, which will fade into obscurity by the end of the next, but West Indies began their latest New Era impressively, beating Pakistan by seven runs in the first ever Twenty20 match between the teams. Lendl Simmons made 65 to help West Indies set a competitive total before Devendra Bishoo’s four wickets brought them victory.Such has been Ottis Gibson’s desperation for renewal after a disappointing World Cup campaign that five debutants were fielded. Critics, though, could point to a desire for greater control as much as freshness after several senior players were jettisoned from the squad. That certainly seemed to be the view held by Chris Gayle, the former captain, who vented his frustration with Gibson and the WICB by joining Royal Challengers Bangalore and issuing a withering assessment of both in a radio interview. The off-field wrangling dominated the build-up to the match and is likely to rumble on for some time to come but West Indies fans could at least enjoy a moment of on-field catharsis.Such drama is familiar to Pakistan but of late they have been alarmingly stable. Their last game was a passionate spectacle against India in the World Cup semi-final in Mohali, so they could be forgiven for looking a little underwhelmed by St Lucia.Barely a smattering of spectators showed up but those who did were treated to an entertaining opening from Simmons. Filling the immense hole left by Gayle’s absence he cracked 65 from 44 balls and shared a 99-run stand for the second wicket with a fluent Darren Bravo, who made 42.The pair struck 15 boundaries between them, which proved crucial as West Indies collapsed in familiar fashion after they were separated.Luckily for them the bowlers, led by legspinner Bishoo, masked the errors in an energetic display. The six no-balls pointed to performance lacking polish but the attack used a tiring pitch to good effect.Darren Sammy ensured Pakistan’s chase got off on the wrong foot as he had Mohammad Hafeez caught at fine leg for 3 before Ahmed Shehzad spooned Ravi Rampaul to mid-on for 12. Asad Shafiq threatened a revival with Umar Akmal before Bishoo intervened with two wickets in his first over. Shafiq was brilliantly caught for 25 by Danza Hyatt, diving forward from midwicket, before Misbah-ul-Haq was dismissed for a duck, treading on his stumps a ball later.Even modest legspinners have proved potent in 20-over cricket and Bishoo, who impressed on international debut in the World Cup, is better than that. Mixing his pace and flight nicely he got his third wicket when Shahid Afridi scythed a cut to point on 12 to leave Pakistan’s hopes entirely with Umar.Having reached a run-a-ball 41, Umar was victim to his own misunderstanding. The previous delivery he had alerted the umpires to a no-ball caused by West Indies not having the required three men in the ring but, thinking the following ball was a free-hit, swung Rampaul to Marlon Samuels on the square-leg boundary. Umar lingered but the umpires this time knew better. What should have been a doddle from there for West Indies became tense, as Rampaul’s no-ball-ridden penultimate over cost 15, but Andre Russell held his nerve in the final over to seal victory. The lacklustre showing from Pakistan’s batsmen was in sharp contrast to Simmons and Bravo. Happy to use their feet, both were proficient against the pace and spin and used the small boundaries to good effect. West Indies passed 100 in the 13th over and looked set to post a really significant total but a trademark collapse punctured the optimism.Bravo holed out to long-on off Abdur Rehman before Simmons was run out by Samuels two overs later. Samuels, on his comeback after serving a two-year ban for alleged involvement with illegal bookmakers, endured a torrid time as he laboured to 4 from 11 balls before running past a Saeed Ajmal doosra. Sammy followed quickly for 1 and it needed a last-over boundary to take the total past 150. Pakistan looked to have the edge but Bishoo ensured otherwise.

Australia to tour Bangladesh after World Cup

Australia will tour Bangladesh for the first time since 2006 in April 2011, straight after the on-going World Cup, for a three-match bilateral one-day series. They are scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on April 4, just two days after the World Cup final, and will play ODIs on April 9, April 11 and April 13, all at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. In accordance with the ICC Future Tours Programme, Test playing nations must tour each other at least once every six years, and Australia have toured Bangladesh just once since they attained Test status. That tour was in April 2006 and Australia won both Tests and all three one-dayers. The FTP had Australia scheduled to play two Tests this time around as well, but the Bangladesh Cricket Board have announced Australia will leave immediately after the three ODIs.One repercussion of the tour will be that the players from both teams’ squads will miss the first week of the IPL, which begins on April 8. As many as 36 current Australia players were sold to IPL franchises during January’s auction, while Shakib Al Hasan is the only Bangladesh player who is part of the Twenty20 tournament.Australia have had a busy last five months, having played series against India, Sri Lanka and England in the lead-up to the World Cup. Bangladesh have enjoyed a slightly more spread-out schedule, with a couple of one-day home series the only cricket they played in the six months before the World Cup.Bangladesh have beaten Australia just once in 16 one-dayers against them, back in 2007 in Cardiff. Since they last played Australia in September 2008, they have won 25 of their 53 one-day games, and have been on a good run at home, where they recently won series against New Zealand and Zimbabwe.

Infelizmente, o campo prejudicou demais as duas equipes.

Aceitamos demais a situação.

Zimbabwe should be 'scared' – Fountain

Zimbabwe have openly conceded they are the ‘underdogs’ going into their one-day series against Bangladesh, and Julien Fountain, the Bangladeshi fielding coach, believes the visitors have every reason to be apprehensive

Bangladesh’s fielding coach Julien Fountain believes Zimbabwe won’t pose a significant threat•Associated Press

Zimbabwe have openly conceded they are the ‘underdogs’ going into their one-day series against Bangladesh, and Julien Fountain, the Bangladeshi fielding coach, believes the visitors have every reason to be apprehensive as they prepare to face a side which has had the better of all the recent encounters between the two teams.”I think they are probably right, they are the underdogs,” said Fountain, who was appointed fielding coach in August this year and has previously filled that role for England, Pakistan and West Indies. “We are at home; it is our wicket, our conditions and our crowd. They should feel a little scared.”While for several years after their first meeting in 1997 Zimbabwe had the beating of Bangladesh, the Bangladeshis have proved utterly dominant dominant in recent times and have won 25 of the 47 matches between the two teams.Zimbabwe have identified Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan as a key player in this series, with captain Elton Chigumbura calling him “the main guy”, but Fountain suggested that the hosts did not regard any of the Zimbabwean players as particularly threatening. “To be honest, I haven’t really done much research on them,” he said. “I really don’t think we are looking at them as though they are dangerous.”

West Ham: Insider makes ‘big’ Rice claim

Journalist and transfer ‘insider’ Dean Jones has made a behind-the-scenes West Ham United claim on midfield star Declan Rice’s future at the club.

The Lowdown: Rice rumours emerge…

A plethora of rumours surrounding Rice have come to light in the last week with big name transfer source Fabrizio Romano claiming he is ‘open’ to leaving this summer and has turned down a third new deal offer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This comes after both Jones and 90min reporter Scott Saunders first said he is more open than ever to a Rush Green exit, yet according to Claret & Hugh, there have been claims to the contrary.

The insider believes that Rice is committed to West Ham for 2022/2023 at the very least, though if there isn’t any sign of competing for silverware, he could consider his future next year.

The Latest: Jones shares update…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones claimed that the 23-year-old is set for a ‘big’ conversation with West Ham behind-the-scenes and there is ‘no doubt’ clubs will be knocking on the door.

He explained: “Declan Rice is going to have to have a big conversation with West Ham at the end of the season, no matter what happens.

“There’s no doubt that there’s going to be two or three clubs asking the question of how much would you actually sell this guy for?”

The Verdict: Interesting summer ahead…

There is little danger of manager David Moyes losing his superstar player this window given West Ham’s hard-line sale stance and the fact GSB have an option to extend his contract by a further year.

However, if Rice pushes for a possible move away, West Ham may be pressured somewhat to entertain interested clubs as to not disrupt the harmony of Moyes’ squad.

That being said, any price below £100 million simply shouldn’t be considered given his obvious quality, the fact Rice is homegrown and may only get better.

According to WhoScored, the colossal Three Lions international has averaged a fifth-best passing accuracy per game on average out of every Premier League player in the division (91.6%) – backing his composure and assurance at an impressively young age.

He’s also in high demand, putting West Ham in a position of strength to command a justifiable fee for his services.

Ideally, Moyes will have another season or two with Rice in his squad, but this summer could be a very interesting one nonetheless.

Romano makes key Liverpool transfer claim

Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni could potentially join Liverpool this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Tchouameni linked with move

Jurgen Klopp could be looking to make midfield reinforcements this summer, considering it is an ageing area of the Reds’ squad.

One player who has been linked with a move to Liverpool is Tchouameni, who is arguably one of Europe’s most highly-rated young midfielders.

The 22-year-old has been an influential performer for Monaco throughout this season, averaging 2.5 tackles and 2.8 interceptions per game in Ligue 1.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-30/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: Romano drops fresh claim

Speaking on his YouTube channel [via This Is Anfield], Romano claimed that Liverpool are in the conversation with a ‘huge chance’ to sign Tchouaemi this summer:

“So keep an eye on Liverpool, keep an eye on what happens at Manchester United, because they will go for a midfielder.

“But at the moment, there are still no negotiations open for Tchouameni. But he could be a huge chance for the Premier League clubs. I’m told that they are really keen on signing him in the summer.”

The Verdict: Perfect summer addition

Tchouameni is an enormous prospect who has been described as ‘extraordinary’ by Paul Pogba, and he looks like someone who could be the perfect addition to Liverpool’s midfield.

He could come in as a squad player initially but it likely wouldn’t take long before he was an integral part of Klopp’s team, combining quality on the ball  – he enjoyed a 90.9% pass completion rate across five appearances for France in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers – with tenacious work off it.

With the likes of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago all now in their 30s, and Fabinho turning 29 this year, it is vital that fresh legs come in in the middle of the park. Tchouameni is perfect, in that respect.
