Dando liga!

Spurs: Kulusevski off-colour in defeat

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of a top-four finish were dealt a serious blow as Antonio Conte’s men lost 1-0 at home to Brighton on Saturday afternoon thanks to a last-minute Leandro Trossard strike.

Spurs were toothless throughout, managing just five shots all afternoon with zero on target, compared to the Seagulls’ 12 shots, five of which were on target.

Despite the defeat, the north London outfit remain fourth, however, there are still results elsewhere to come through in the Premier League, as well as the fact that numerous sides have games in hand on the Lilywhites.

It was an afternoon to forget for everyone associated with the football club, although winger Dejan Kulusevski had arguably his worst game in a Spurs shirt.

The January loan signing from Juventus has started life in England excellently, scoring three goals and registering six assists over just 12 Premier League appearances.

However, Saturday’s showing fell well below the standard set by the 21-year-old Swede – with journalist Vaishali Bhardwaj dubbing his display as “quiet”.

According to SofaScore, the wide man managed to make just 18 touches in a 64-minute spell at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, during which the 21-year-old lost possession seven times, an average of once every 2.6 touches of the ball.

Moreover, the winger failed to complete a single dribble, attempting just one, whilst also winning just one of five attempted duels.

There was little from the Sweden international at both ends of the pitch, offering zero shots whilst also failing to make a single clearance, block or interception.

A rare positive of the Juventus loanee’s display was his passing accuracy, which stood at 90%. However, the Tottenham newbie attempted just ten passes, completing nine.

To cap the off-colour performance, the winger was booked 27 minutes into the match – catching Marc Cucurella with a nasty elbow, perhaps being lucky to remain on the pitch.

Spurs supporters will be hoping that the performance was a one-off from the January signing who had instantly impressed the Tottenham faithful.

Moreover, they will be desperate for their side to avoid such a result again this campaign, with just six league matches to go in the race for a top-four finish.

Despite the fact that Graham Potter’s men had won at Arsenal last weekend, it was still a poor result for Conte’s men and can’t be repeated if the North London outfit are to secure Champions League football for next season.

Clean up your act, ICC tells PCB

The ICC has given the PCB a hard rap on the knuckles and decided to monitor closely the running of the game in Pakistan

Osman Samiuddin13-Oct-2010

Ijaz Butt’s tenure has been an eventful one and his handling of the PCB administration has met with much criticism•Getty Images

Taking note of the continuing decline in the governance of cricket in Pakistan, the ICC has given the PCB a hard rap on the knuckles and decided to monitor closely the running of the game in Pakistan. After a two-day board meeting at the ICC’s HQ in Dubai – the first since the spot-fixing scandal that rocked the world of cricket – the message of the world governing body to one of its leading members was clear: sort out the game’s administration or face the consequences, potentially in the form of sanctions.A wide-ranging series of measures has been approved by the ICC requiring Pakistan to not only toughen its approach to corruption within the game but to also work alongside the ICC’s task force on Pakistan “to carry out any reforms which may be deemed necessary to restore confidence in the administration of the game” in that country. In this statement lies an implicit recognition and acknowledgment of the administrative mishaps in Ijaz Butt’s two-year tenure, as well as the breakdown in relationship between the board and ICC. Under Butt’s administration, the ICC has seen a full member attacked by terrorists in Pakistan, an incident that took international cricket away from the country. That almost led to a legal battle between the PCB and ICC and, though it was averted, the PCB didn’t even file a report on the incident to the ICC until well over a year later. The ICC’s task force, initially set up to examine ways to bring international cricket back to Pakistan and cushion against subsequent financial losses, has been “reconstituted” for this purpose; in effect, it’s brief has been widened to go beyond and look at ways to work with the PCB in improving governance. Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman who heads the task force, is believed to have played a crucial role in the meetings to broaden the force’s role. Peter Chingoka, the ZC chairman who has also extended a helping hand to the PCB by offering his national side as the first tourists to Pakistan since the terror attacks, has been appointed to the team, which also includes Ranjan Madugalle, Ramiz Raja, Mike Brearley and Dave Richardson, the ICC’s general manager. The spot-fixing scandal that erupted during the tour to England this summer has also brought its own specific repercussions. The Pakistan board refused to initially suspend the three players at the centre of the scandal, eventually compelling the ICC to do so. That sparked another war of words between Butt and the ICC, the former claiming the latter had acted with undue haste as the police investigation was ongoing. Matters took a bizzare twist when Butt claimed there was “loud and clear talk” of England’s players taking money to lose an ODI this summer. He was forced to retract the statement after the ECB threatened legal action and the whole affair prompted some within the ICC to consider the possibility of suspending Butt from his ICC directorship. It is against this backdrop that the ICC has told the PCB that “it must act and be seen to be acting to uphold the zero-tolerance attitude to corruption in sport.” Pakistan now has 30 days to conduct a thorough and far-reaching review of their “player integrity issues” and report back to the task force. In the review, the PCB must show that it has introduced a domestic anti-corruption code, in line with the ICC’s own code. Not all member countries currently have a domestic code but the ACSU has only requested all members to implement a domestic code that mirrors the ICC’s, a sign of how seriously it is considering the problem in Pakistan. The PCB has also been asked in that time to implement an education programmes for players, a “proper, accountable and robust disciplinary process for the sport” and a process to deter and detect corrupt elements within the game, “whether it be players, officials, agents or any other individual.”In effect, the PCB has been asked to take measures which should’ve been taken ten years ago after the Qayyum commission report, a decade in which the clouds of corruption have hovered consistently over Pakistan cricket. Failure to do so could lead to sanctions according to the ICC, though the nature of these have not been specified. The worst case scenario – and an extremely unlikely one – is that Pakistan is suspended as a full member, though it is thought a likelier option might be to find ways to deal with officials other than Butt. With Butt’s recent statements in mind, the board has also been told not to take any action “which might put themselves in a conflict of interest position as regards the allegations” that are currently under investigation, or to make “public comments and disclosing confidential information which undermine the integrity, reputation and image of the game and/or any ongoing disciplinary or criminal investigation/proceedings.”All of which is likely to place further pressure on Butt, who has already been facing severe criticism domestically from across the spectrum. Rumours were rife last week that he was about to be replaced, though that has come to nought.

Bruno Costa desviou contra a própria meta: 2 a 0.

Newcastle eye Targett, Bissouma and Diaby

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) are now eyeing a triple summer swoop for Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Saint-Maximin replacement?

As per The Daily Mail, as many as three wingers have been added to the Magpies’ list of transfer targets, with Allan Saint-Maximin ‘expected’ to be sold.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Brighton and Hove Albion ace Leandro Trossard, Nottingham Forest talent Brennan Johnson and Bayer Leverkusen dazzler Moussa Diaby are all thought to be potential options, but the wing is not the only position where Newcastle are looking to strengthen.

The Latest: Three targets for Newcastle

The Daily Mail added that, along with a potential replacement for Saint-Maximin, PIF are also eyeing a move for another Seagulls star in Yves Bissouma, in addition to a permanent deal for Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett.

The Tyneside club are now ‘poised’ to sign the latter for around £15m plus an initial loan fee, which includes a bonus for avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

The Verdict: Exciting

It certainly is exciting to see the number of players with whom Newcastle have been linked, even though their signings may come at the cost of losing Saint-Maximin.

The Toon Army will already be aware of both Trossard and Johnson’s qualities from English football, but Diaby is certainly a player of whom they should not be dismissive.

Praised by German media for his ‘amazing’ dribbling, ‘irresistible’ pace and ‘astonishing’ speed of thought earlier this season, the Frenchman was also hailed as ‘unstoppable’ after scoring one goal and setting up another in a 4-0 thumping of Borussia Monchengladbach (Bundesliga).

Diaby now has 16 goals and 11 assists across all competitions so far this term, mainly operating from the flanks (Transfermarkt), and he is still only 22 years of age.

The Magpies will also be aware of how good Bissouma is, too. After all, The Daily Mail journalist Sami Mokbel believes that the Malian has ‘top-six’ capabilities, while The Chronicle reporter Aaron Stokes even went as far as to claim that the 25-year-old is an ‘absolute monster’.

Nonetheless, strengthening with quality in three key areas will no doubt please Eddie Howe and the Newcastle supporters going into the new campaign.
