George joins McGrath production line

Glenn McGrath has been able to achieve something with fast bowlers that Shane Warne couldn’t with legspinners

Tall, slim and effective: Peter George•South Australian Cricket Association

Glenn McGrath has been able to achieve something with fast bowlers that Shane Warne couldn’t with legspinners, by inspiring a production line of next-generation quicks. Steven Smith, who is currently showing promise, is the closest to a successful Warne clone despite every young cricketer wanting to bowl like him when he was playing. But there are fast men dotted around the world who carry McGrath’s characteristics.Stuart Clark was the first “next McGrath” and has been followed at New South Wales by Josh Hazlewood, who made his ODI debut last week. In England it’s almost impossible for something to be written about Steven Finn, the 201cm 21-year-old, without mentioning the man who took 563 Test wickets. They join Pakistan’s Mohammad Asif, South Africa’s Morne Morkel and the Ashes-winning Stuart Broad in modelling themselves on McGrath – or wanting to be like him.Over the past two weeks Australia A have benefited from the McGrath-like work of Peter George, a South Australian fast bowler, who took 11 wickets in two first-class games against Sri Lanka A. Apart from his height and ability to operate at a pace in the mid-130s, George has also picked up some McGrath mannerisms and comparisons.”It’s a pretty high compliment for me, if I could be half of what he was then I’d be pretty happy with that,” George told Cricinfo. “Glenn was always a hero of mine growing up. It’s something that does come out in a lot of young kids, you can usually tell who they idolised when growing up.”At 23, George is surprised to be still growing and was 203cm at his last measure, 8cm taller than his role model. Extra bounce caused by his high release point is his major weapon, but he has also been working at the Academy over the past two winters on developing a consistent outswinger. Craig McDermott, a man who mastered high pace and swerve, has been advising him along with Troy Cooley, the bowling coach, at the Centre of Excellence.”The main thing I try to do is stay tall and use my height, and get as much bounce as I can,” he said. “Any movement is a bonus on top of that.”The extra lift caused the trouble for Sri Lanka A’s batsmen in Queensland. George collected 4 for 13 in the first innings of the second game in Townsville, which followed his 5 for 84 at Allan Border Field. Each performance helped set up a convincing win while increasing his first-class tally to 18 games.”It’s been a really good couple of weeks, spending some time around some senior cricketers,” he said. “It’s been a really good experience.” In both matches he bowled in partnership with Ben Hilfenhaus, who leaves on Friday to join the Test team in England, and was impressed with the amount of swing the Tasmanian achieved.George is not part of Australia A’s limited-overs fixtures, which start with a Twenty20 in Townsville on Friday, and was back at the Academy on Tuesday to prepare for their upcoming series. Once those engagements conclude he will return to South Australia hoping to build on his encouraging first two seasons. After taking 36 Sheffield Shield wickets last summer, George was awarded a brief introduction to life as an international when he was flown to New Zealand as Test cover for Ryan Harris. The visit lasted only three nights, but he got to bowl at training on Test eve before leaving after the match began.”It would have been nice to have hung around for a bit longer,” he said. “But the time that I was there was really valuable. It was a bit of a taste, I’m keen to get back there if I can.”

Ogbonna may have played final West Ham game

West Ham centre-back Angelo Ogbonna may have played his last game for the Hammers, with news emerging of a possible summer move to Lazio.

The Lowdown: Ogbonna out for the season

The Italian made a superb start to the season for David Moyes’ side, making 11 Premier League starts and helping West Ham look like strong top-four contenders.

Sadly, Ogbonna has been out since suffering a cruciate ligament injury back in November, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign in the process.

Now, it looks as though Ogbonna may not represent the club again, given that his contract expires this summer and the race to sign him is hotting up in Europe.

The Latest: Lazio link emerges

According to Citta Celeste [via Sport Witness], the 33-year-old is seen as the ‘most feasible’ signing for Lazio this summer.

It is stated that any potential signing could depend on whether or not West Ham decide to offer Ogbonna a new contract, but the Rome-based outfit are on the lookout for a new centre-back and he is top of their list.

The Verdict: Sad end to Hammers career

In truth, it is tough to see Ogbonna play for the Hammers again, considering he turns 34 in the summer and will be coming back from an extremely serious injury.

Despite his excellent form to start the campaign, it makes little sense to offer a new deal to someone of that age who may not come back the same player after his recovery.

Instead, parting ways with the centre-back and bringing in a younger option – someone who can compete with the likes of Kurt Zouma, Issa Diop and Craig Dawson – seems much more viable for the Hammers.

Ogbonna should be remembered as an excellent servant for West Ham, though, and someone who helped turn them into their best team of the Premier League era, making 202 appearances overall.

In other news, a journalist has made a claim regarding one rumoured West Ham target. Find out who it is here.

VB badge kiss is very Bollinger

In less than four months, Doug Bollinger has become the most important bowler in Australia’s Test team but he still hasn’t perfected his celebrations

In less than four months, Doug Bollinger has become the most important bowler in Australia’s Test team but he still hasn’t perfected his celebrations. When he completed his second Test five-for, he looked down and kissed his shirt, hesitated for a second as he realised he’d actually got the VB sponsor’s logo, and tried to recover by switching sides and finding the Australian badge. He laughed it off. He’s used to doing that. He did the badge-kissing thing in Perth in December, but joked it was only because he’d seen someone else do it. He was asked in the lead-up to this game how his hairpiece would stand up in the Wellington wind and said: “Next question”.He bugs his team-mates by repeating the same joke over and over in the change-rooms: “Two fish are in a tank and one says to the other ‘how do you drive this thing?'” He would be a fun but exhausting man to be around.Fortunately, there is more to Bollinger than a unique personality. His seven wickets so far in the Wellington Test put Australia firmly in control and it continued his outstanding summer in the five-day game. Since returning to the team at the start of December, he has collected 32 breakthroughs at 18.06, easily the most of any Australian player in that time.Mitchell Johnson keeps finding victims and Nathan Hauritz has discovered his niche but Bollinger has become the spearhead. He is the man to whom Ricky Ponting turns when a change in momentum is required, or to convert a couple of wickets into a collapse. He achieved both those feats on the third day, first running through the New Zealand tail to allow Ponting to enforce the follow-on for the second time this season, then breaking an opening stand that had swelled to 70.His speed and accuracy allow batsmen no respite and that was what upset BJ Watling, who had cautiously worked his way to 33 when he was lbw to a ball that pitched in line and straightened, for the second time in the game. His angle soon accounted for Peter Ingram and he edged behind. The 5 for 28 that he secured in the first innings was fitting reward for his persistence. The same energy that nags good-naturedly at his team-mates causes far more worries for his opponents and even late in the afternoon, after a day and a half of bowling, he was still peppering down bouncers and making the batsmen jump.”I’m trying to [intimidate],” Bollinger said. “That’s just how I bowl, I try to be aggressive and bowl in the batsman’s face and make them as uncomfortable as I can. That’s what a fast bowler’s job is to do. I felt really, really good today. I didn’t try to overdo anything. I just feel like the ball is coming out of my hand really well at the moment and I’m just really, really enjoying my cricket.”Bollinger makes otherwise pedestrian periods of Test cricket compulsory viewing. When he’s sprinting in it is impossible to look away for fear of missing a wicket, an appeal or a moment of mirth. This Test has had the lot: 7 for 58, a laughably optimistic appeal (he was the only man to go up for a bump ball return catch and you could sense his team-mates cringe) and a VB kiss that was replayed over and over. The team’s most important bowler is also its most watchable.

ten Doeschate ton seals Essex win

A round-up of the third round of games in the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition

Cricinfo staff03-May-2010Derbyshire’s return to Leek after a gap of 18 years ended in defeat when the fastest century of the season from Ryan ten Doeschate carried Essex to a five-wicket victory. Although the Falcons rattled up 299 for seven – their highest total in a 40 over match – ten Doeschate tore the game from their grasp after the Eagles had slipped to 64 for 4, chasing a revised target of 247 from 30 overs.Somerset won their second successive Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Lancashire at Old Trafford by 42 runs thanks to an impressive display in the field today. Defending 236, Marcus Trescothick’s men were boosted by four wickets for 34 in seven overs from Alfonso Thomas. The experienced South African put the skids under the Lightning with two wickets in the 35th over of their chase – the first of the batting powerplay – to reduce them to 174 for 6. They were just two of five wickets lost by the hosts for 12 runs in 13 balls as they fell from 173 for 4 to 185 for 9, and subsided to 193 all out in the 38th.Steve Davies came back to haunt Worcestershire yet again as Surrey chalked up their second Clydesdale Bank 40 victory of the season by 30 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method at New Road. The 23-year-old wicketkeeper led a successful run chase when adding a fluent 81 from 55 balls to the 206 he scored in two innings in the Championship meeting with his former county at Whitgift School last month.James Kirtley took four wickets in eight balls to help end a brave challenge by the Unicorns and give Sussex their second Group A win in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at Hove. The 35-year-old fast bowler did the damage in the 37th over as the Unicorns’ bid to reach a target of 256 ran out of steam. Josh Knappett hit the first ball of the over to long off, Wes Durston was caught behind off the fourth delivery, after making 51 off 53 balls, and Glenn Querl was yorked off the final ball of the over.Injury-hit Durham Dynamos claimed top spot in Group C with a convincing win over Leicestershire Foxes in their Clydesdale Bank 40 clash at Grace Road. Chasing a revised target of 176 in 26 overs, the Foxes could only manage 154 for eight as they lost by 26 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis system.

NUFC must land record-breaking deal

The January transfer window is in full swing and Newcastle have been busy as they get to work on improving Eddie Howe’s squad.

Kieran Trippier has already been brought in from Atletico Madrid and Burnley forward Chris Wood is also reportedly on the verge of arriving at St. James’ Park.

However, there could be more incomings at Tyneside before the end of the month as there are still positions in the team where signings could be mae.

Save the season

One player Howe could sign to potentially save the club’s season is central defender Sven Botman, as he would arrive in an area where the side needs strengthening the most.

The Athletic recently reported that the Ligue 1 side are desperate to keep him until the end of the season, stating that Newcastle’s chances of signing him are ‘all but over’. Whilst it is hardly promising for the Magpies, it also does not 100% rule out a move in the current window.

This leaves the club with a bit of wriggle room to work in and they could piece together an attractive enough offer to change Lille’s mind. It was previously reported that they would not sell Botman under any conditions unless they received £45m or more for his services and this could be the magic number for Nick Hammond to hit.

£45m would be a club-record transfer for the club and it could be worth it as the Dutchman could solve a major issue for the Magpies.

Howe’s side holds the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League, with 20th-placed Norwich the only team worse off than them. They have conceded a whopping 42 goals in 19 matches, letting in 2.2 goals per game and keeping just one clean sheet all season.

AC Milan and Italy legend Paolo Maldini once dubbed Botman a “great player” and his statistics for Lille in Ligue 1 back that comment up. Last season, he averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.08 as he helped them win the league title whilst keeping an incredible 20 clean sheets.

This shows that he can perform consistently to a high level whilst functioning as part of a solid defence, which is exactly what Newcastle have been missing so far this season.

Therefore, he could come in and provide a major upgrade to the backline and possibly save the club’s campaign by adding a defensive toughness that was absent before, helping them to keep more clean sheets and win more points.

Howe must now ensure that he can get a record-breaking deal over the line for him before the window slams shut.
