Journalist drops interesting Kretinsky update

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Paul Brown of The Daily Star has dropped an interesting claim on Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky and his ambition to take full ownership of West Ham United in future.

The Lowdown: Kretinsky in talks…

Right at the end of last month, some huge off-field news emerged with The Athletic revealing that Kretinsky had entered advanced talks to buy a 27 per cent minority stake in West Ham.

The deal had apparently been ‘months in the making’ and ‘would therefore spell the beginning of the end’ of the hugely mixed GSB era in east London (The Athletic).

David Gold, David Sullivan, and Karren Brady’s ownership has been met with fierce protests among West Ham fans in recent years and especially after their decision to leave the Boleyn Ground.

In a financial boost for the club, Kretinsky’s acquisition of a minority share, now confirmed, is reportedly worth around £700 million (Daily Express).

While the 46-year-old has bought a smaller stake in the club than GSB’s, it is believed that the “Czech Sphinx” may eventually seek to fully takeover in future with that option understood to be included in the deal (The Daily Mail).

The Latest: Brown shares interesting update…

Making an interesting claim on Kretinsky’s plans to fully takeover West Ham at a later date, Brown has backed that he is ‘serious’ about doing so after what he’s been ‘told’ – but insists there is one ‘problem’.

“We are told that he is serious about one day owning the club in full,” he explained to GMS.

“The problem there is that even though there does appear to be an option in the deal, nobody knows how that option could be activated.

“While the option may be there and we are told he’s serious about being West Ham’s owner at some point, it doesn’t seem like that’s a massive priority for him in the short-term.”

The Verdict: Blow for supporters?

GSB’s reign has been met with scrutiny both on and off the field and it’s safe to say a fair few West Ham fans would possibly prefer Kretinsky’s full takeover at some point.

His personal wealth sits at an eye-watering £3 billion as the Czech magnate is already tipped to inject some much-needed cash transfer funds into the club, even with just a minority stake.

Sources with knowledge of Kretinsky’s background, like football pundit Jiri Hosek, also believe that West Ham fans can ‘optimistic’ about the prospect of him one day taking full ownership of the club – citing his financial transparency and lack of question marks over his fortune (Radio Prague).

Taking into account Brown’s claim, however, we believe fans may well have to be satisfied with Kretinsky’s cash injection for now.

Watson shines as make-shift opener

Australia’s batsmen refused to suffer further from the team’s Edgbaston curse, which robbed them of the wicketkeeper Brad Haddin after the toss, as they raced to 126 for 1 on a first day significantly curtailed by rain. Shane Watson, who had come in for the discarded opener Phillip Hughes, quickly eliminated any doubt over his unorthodox promotion to add his second Test half-century in his ninth match, an innings which helped justify Ricky Ponting’s decision to bat despite the potential for swing and seam.England’s bowlers were treated like Australia’s on the first day at Lord’s, giving up 85 in 19 overs before they picked up Simon Katich. By then they knew they would not be receiving any significant support from a placid pitch, although they had already benefited from the visitors’ misfortune. Following a long delay when nothing happened quickly, Australia were suddenly thrust into frantic behind-the-scenes action while Ponting was at the toss. All the team discussions over how Australia would recover from a 1-0 deficit required an instant re-think when Haddin suffered a suspected broken finger in the warm-up. With the team sheet already handed in, they had to ask permission to replace Haddin with Graham Manou, the South Australia gloveman, who received an unthinkable debut. The tourists were floored in similar circumstances here four years ago when Glenn McGrath hurt his ankle on the morning of the game, an event which started Australia’s fall to a 2-1 loss.None of this bothered Watson, who knew of his promotion on the eve of the match, and he took guard for the first ball and was soon sending it through cover, point, midwicket and square leg during the 30 available overs. Entering the game with a Test average of 19.76, Watson played like he had been part of the team for years as he drove and pulled with freedom and power. He had failed as an opener with Queensland a couple of seasons ago but gained confidence from his stints there in the limited-overs sides.By stumps there were no immediate regrets over his elevation after he pumped 10 boundaries, including a drive off Graham Onions that was so straight it bounced over the umpire, during an assured 62 off 105 deliveries. His only moment of serious discomfort came in the same over Graeme Swann removed Katich, with Watson missing a sweep and surviving a loud lbw appeal on 37.Moving on quickly, his 89-ball half-century arrived with a clipped two to the legside. It was just what Watson, an allrounder who has fought a series of untimely injuries, needed and his fast-bowling will also provide cover for Mitchell Johnson, the out-of-sorts attack leader. With 11 overs remaining Watson was joined by Ponting, who held firm to finish on 17, eight short of Allan Border’s Australia record of 11,174 runs. Ponting was required when Katich grew too confident and aimed a hefty pull to his first offering from Swann, falling lbw when struck on the front leg. He was unhappy to exit in such ugly fashion for 46 from 48 balls after such a smooth start.James Anderson took the new ball with Andrew Flintoff but both bowled too short before Onions and Stuart Broad experienced some harsh treatment in front of a subdued sell-out crowd. Watson unfurled a crisp off-drive for four from Onions’ second ball and then pulled another to midwicket in the same over. Broad also gave away two early boundaries when he aimed at Katich’s legs and was twice caressed through square leg.Play eventually started at 5pm after rain fell in Birmingham on Wednesday and Thursday morning, but the skies cleared after lunch and the match began in beautiful summer sunshine. The umpires Rudi Koertzen and Aleem Dar were particularly concerned by the soggy run-ups and the damp outfield and called Ponting and Andrew Strauss on to the field during two inspections before they agreed the conditions were suitable.England’s only change from the outfit that won at Lord’s last week was Ian Bell coming in at No. 4 for the injured Kevin Pietersen, but the unaltered bowling attack must re-focus in the morning if they are to trouble their opponents. Both sides need to make an early impact if they are to pursue a positive result as further weather disruptions are expected on Saturday and Monday.

Preece drops exciting Villa transfer claim

Aston Villa owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens will back Steven Gerrard in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a recent claim made by Ashley Preece, with the journalist stating in a recent Birmingham Live Q&A that the 41-year-old manager will get rid of a number of players he does not feel are of the standard required for Villa during the winter market, before going on to claim that NSWE will back the new Villa boss in pursuit of his own targets in the upcoming window.

In response to a question regarding Aston Villa’s January business, the journalist said:

“Gerrard hinted at doing business in January during [Monday’s] interview. He’s going to be backed by NSWE. He’ll get rid of players he doesn’t like and he’ll attract a serious calibre of player [and] should business get done. January is a tough market but the Gerrard factor gives Villa an edge. Gerrard will have the next six weeks to see what he wants and needs in terms of new recruits.”

Fans will be excited

While the appointment of a new manager always brings with it the hope of a side going on to achieve great things under their new coach, the news that NSWE are willing to fund Gerrard’s rebuilding of the Aston Villa squad in January is yet another reason for the Villa Park faithful to get excited.

Indeed, there are a number of players currently taking up space in Gerrard’s first-team squad that are perhaps ready for the chop, such as Anwar El Ghazi and Keinan Davis, while, despite only being at the club for a matter of days, the former Liverpool captain has already been linked with moves for a host of exciting players, such as the likes of Ryan Kent, Julian Alvarez and Jesse Lingard.

As such, despite the fact that Villa are currently languishing down in 16th place in the Premier League standings, there is very much a great deal for fans of the club to look forward to in the coming months, particularly following Preece’s recent claim that Gerrard looks set to be given a war chest in a bid to improve his squad during the January window.

Paddy Kenny urges Leeds to spend in January

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny believes that it would be reckless if the Whites decided not to do any business in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Leeds tipped to sign nobody

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have made a disappointing start to their Premier League campaign, winning only one of their first nine matches prior to today’s trip to Norwich.

After the highs of finishing ninth in their first season back in the top flight, the early months of 2021/22 have proven to be a sobering experience.

According to recent comments by The Athletic’s Phil Hay, Leeds are unlikely to make any new signings in January, unless their season is “on edge”.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375277″]

The Latest: Kenny bemoans apparent inactivity

Speaking to Football Insider, Kenny rued that claim, saying that it would be naive of Leeds not to strengthen considering that they could find themselves in a potential relegation fight. He said:

“I don’t think they can afford not to sign anyone. Everyone else will be looking to strengthen. You can’t afford not to, it’s just too tough in the Premier League these days.

“If Leeds are in the same position they are now, I’ll guarantee they’ll need to strengthen. The fans won’t be happy if they don’t either.

“If you look at where they are now, they’re struggling for form and it looks like it could do with a freshen up.”

The Verdict: Gauge it later in the year

While there is understandable reason to want new faces to come in given their current struggles, Leeds should look at the situation nearer Christmas in terms of their league position.

Key players such as Luke Ayling, Robin Koch and Patrick Bamford are out injured – the likes of Junior Firpo and Kalvin Phillips have also been unavailable recently – and the team’s fortunes could change when they all return.

Should Leeds’ struggles continue, though, it would be remiss of the club not to at least consider some January reinforcements. Kenny’s concerns are understandable, even if the Whites don’t need to push the panic button just yet.

Match factsFriday June 5
Start time 17.30 (16.30GMT)Big PictureThe floodlights are in place, the snoozing MCC members have been piled up in a quiet corner, and after a soporific start to the summer, we are all set to get England’s biggest-ever season of international cricket properly underway. The endless encounters with West Indies may have been a drain on the patience of even the game’s most stalwart fans, but the prospect of a major global tournament on home soil will lift the spirits as much as the glorious sunshine of the week just past. The Netherlands are not the most formidable opponents that England will face this summer, but as Scotland demonstrated in a feisty friendly at Trent Bridge on Tuesday, 20-over contests play into the hands of ambitious underdogs. A couple of big performances are all that any team needs, and the Dutch have a squad with two kingpins in Dirk Nannes and Ryan ten Doeschate, as well as a glut of senior players with experience of two (and in one case, three) World Cups. They are no strangers to the big-match atmosphere.England for their part just need a solid start. They come into the contest with a run of six victories in a row in all matches since the Lord’s Test in May, but need to maintain that momentum if they are to outdo their efforts in the 2007 event, when they bombed out of the contest with four defeats in a row.Form guideEngland LWWWL
Netherlands NWLWWatch out for…Chopping and changing between formats holds no fears for Ravi Bopara. From the IPL to the Test arena, through a one-day series against West Indies and now back to Twenty20 cricket, he has shown that a run of good form can be sustained with a positive attitude and barrow-loads of confidence. Back at Lord’s, where he scored the second of his three consecutive Test hundreds, and reunited with the format in which he bashed 84 from 59 for King’s XI Punjab, he can be guaranteed to open England’s tournament with cultured aggression.Associate nations cannot usually call upon express pacemen to aid their ambitions, but Dirk Nannes is a player with the skills to uproot a few early wickets. He knows the Lord’s wicket well, having played here for Middlesex in 2008, and his speedy late-swinging left-armers will doubtless be exacerbated by the slope. With only four overs to make an impact, England would be wise to treat him with caution. But if he can create pressure from one end, his colleagues have the wherewithal to capitalise at the other.Team newsEngland are set to use their 12th opening partnership in 16 Twenty20s when Luke Wright teams up with Bopara at the top of the order, having cemented his place with a matchwinning 75 not out against West Indies on Wednesday. Adil Rashid played in both warm-ups but is likely to miss out as the second spinner, as is Dimitri Mascarenhas who had been used as a new-ball option at Trent Bridge.England (probable) 1 Luke Wright, 2 Ravi Bopara, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Owais Shah, 5 Paul Collingwood (capt), 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 James Foster (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Ryan Sidebottom, 11 James AndersonThe hard-hitting Darron Reekers is likely to open up with Alex Kervezee, whose 62 from 59 balls saw off Scotland earlier in the week. Daan van Bunge, famous as the man who was hit for six sixes in an over by Herschelle Gibbs, slots in in the middle order. ten Doeschate, the Essex allrounder, is the kingpin of the middle order.Netherlands (probable) 1 Darron Reekers, 2 Alexei Kervezee, 3 Bas Zuiderent, 4 Ryan ten Doeschate, 5 Daan van Bunge, 6 Jeroen Smits (capt), 7 Tom de Groothe, 8 Mudassar Bukhari, 9 Dirk Nannes, 10 Edgar Schiferli, 11 Pieter SeelaarPitch and conditionsThe weather, so glorious all week, is set to give way to light showers, which will test the teams under the new Lord’s floodlights. The legendary outfield, however, won’t have any trouble coping if there is a downpour. The pitch has been slow for recent encounters, but expect another decent batting surface.Stats and TriviaEngland have faced Netherlands in two previous ICC tournaments, firstly in Peshawar, where they won by 49 runs at the 1996 World Cup, and then in East London in 2003, when the margin was six wickets. Five players in the current squads featured in the 2003 fixture. One from England (James Anderson, who claimed 4 for 25) and four from Netherlands – Jeroen Smits, Edgar Schiferli and van Bunge, as well as Bas Zuiderent, who even played in the Peshawar match, scoring 54 to keep the run-chase alive.Quotes”It is a big commitment but we love the game, we don’t make a living out of it. Maybe if we do well in these kind of tournaments we will.”

“We believe we can win it. I’m not saying we will win it because I don’t want to put pressure on the boys by saying we’ll win it.”

No futebol o objetivo é o gol.

Allan let Rafa Benitez down against Watford

Everton slumped to their second consecutive defeat in the Premier League after they were thrashed 5-2 by Watford at Goodison Park.

It seemed as though it was going to be an easy afternoon’s work for the Toffees after Tom Davies’ third-minute strike gave them an early lead, but the visitors equalised through Josh King just 10 minutes later.

Former Hornets striker Richarlison then restored Everton’s lead after coming off the bench for Rafa Benitez’s charges ahead again, although their joy was short-lived once more. Juraj Kucka’s header drew Watford level late on before King then struck twice inside six minutes to complete his hat-trick, with Emmanuel Dennis putting the seal on an incredible comeback victory.

It was the Norwegian who stole the show as he fired Claudio Ranieri’s side to a much-needed three points, yet several Everton players were hugely disappointing throughout the 90 minutes.

Although goalkeeper Jordan Pickford conceded five goals in a humbling defeat for the England international, it was arguably midfielder Allan who put in the most underwhelming display among the home side.

As per SofaScore, the Brazil international received a match rating of just six out of 10, the second-lowest rating awarded to anyone on the pitch.

When taking a closer look at his underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why he was rated so low. Allan was dribbled past a whopping five times by an opposition player, won only three of his 11 duels (73% lost) and had a passing accuracy of just 77%.

With Abdoulaye Doucoure out injured, the 30-year-old was the most senior player in Benitez’s engine room, but he let his manager down with a hugely below-par showing this afternoon.

Both Allan and Benitez will be hoping for a much-improved performance against Wolves next time out, especially as Everton’s injury list shows no sign of diminishing for several weeks.
