Wolves chasing Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne

Wolves have not found the move to life under Bruno Lage a seamless transition but that’s not entirely the new manager’s fault.

The Old Gold had little room for manoeuvre in the transfer market and they’ve had to nurse star striker Raul Jimenez back to full health.

What’s the word?

Jimenez scored his first goal of the season last weekend but Wolves are still crying out for some extra help in the final third.

Trincao and Adama Traore are yet to find the net in the Premier League this season so it won’t be a surprise if Lage targets more attackers in 2022.

One player they appear to have their eye on is Italy star Lorenzo Insigne.

The 30-year-old helped defeat England in the final of the European Championships but now he could be on his way to the country he left so heartbroken.

That’s according to journalist Ekrem Konur who said the following on Monday morning: “Lorenzo Insigne has not yet responded positively to Napoli’s offers. Wolverhampton and Crystal Palace are closely monitoring Insigne’s condition.”

The attacker is currently rated at £43.2m via Transfermarkt but could be signed for free next summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal in Serie A.

Neto comparisons

Pedro Neto was by far the standout player at Wolves last season.

He finished as the club’s joint-top scorer on five strikes while he was also Nuno Santo’s chief creator with six assists to his name.

All of that led to the Portuguese winger earning Wolves’ Player of the Year award for his vibrant performances.

However, since he sustained a broken patella, the Old Gold have missed every ounce of his qualities quite significantly.

Trincao and Traore have been dazzling when one-on-one with a defender but they have struggled to provide the end product that Neto produces.

Insigne, however, could counterbalance this.

He might be heading towards the later stages of his career but he’s shown over a number of years how phenomenal he can be.

In the words of pundit Tony Cascarino, Insigne is “exceptional”, particularly when it comes to his work rate. That being said, the same assessment is correct when analysing his attacking numbers.

Last season, he was in mesmerising touch in front of goal, beating the ‘keeper on 19 occasions. On top of that, the Italian registered 11 assists.

Insigne is a creative marvel, someone who carved out 1.8 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per game in Serie A last term.

That’s incredibly similar to Neto, someone who provided goals and assists while completing two key passes and 2.1 dribbles a match.

If Wolves can prise him away from Italy on a free transfer, it would be wonderful business from Lage and co.

AND in other news, Signed for £2m, now worth £22.5m: Wolves played a blinder over “phenomenal” beast…

Setor Norte
Público Geral – R$ 200 (meia R$ 100)

Vaughn van Jaarsveld will join South Africa’s Test squad on Sunday to cover for ongoing injuries to Ashwell Prince and Graeme Smith

Cricinfo staff26-Dec-2008Vaughn van Jaarsveld will join South Africa’s Test squad on Sunday to cover for ongoing injuries to Ashwell Prince and Graeme Smith. Prince suffered a cracked thumb prior to the Perth Test and JP Duminy was promoted to the starting line-up, leaving no backup batsman in the touring party.Smith has been battling an elbow problem that needed a painkilling injection before the Melbourne Test. He was intending to play through the Test series before assessing whether surgery was required.van Jaarsveld, 23, was already part of the squad for the limited-overs series that follows the Tests and his early arrival gives him a chance to acclimatise to the Australian conditions. A Lions left-hand batsman, van Jaarsveld is yet to make his international debut.”Vaughn will provide us with cover for both Ashwell Prince and Graeme Smith,” the coach Mickey Arthur said. “It will also provide him with a valuable opportunity to work with the national squad as he is the only member of the ODI squad who did not attend our pre-season camp in October.”

How much West Ham could earn from UEL

West Ham United could potentially earn a maximum of £22million in prize money if they win the Europa League – but GSB have already landed a £4m chunk from UEFA’s billions of commercial revenue.

The Lowdown: First time in the group stages

The Hammers kickstart their Europa League group stage campaign on Thursday evening away to Dinamo Zagreb before facing Rapid Vienna and Genk.

Following last season’s sixth-placed finished in the Premier League, David Moyes’ side face the prospect of proper Thursday night football for the first time in their history.

After splashing the cash on summer signings like Kurt Zouma and Nikola Vlasic, it has been announced how much money West Ham will earn from their participation in the UEFA competition.

The Latest: How much will they earn?

According to Football London, West Ham could earn a maximum of £22million in prize money if they go all the way to lift the trophy. However, they are already guaranteed some nice profit.

The report states that, according to football-coefficient.eu, 6.7 per cent of UEFA’s roughly £3billion commercial revenue will be allocated to the Conference League, with 58 per cent for the Champions League and 13.2 per cent for the Europa League.

From that remarkable UEFA income, the Hammers have banked £4m just for participating, will make £511,658 for every win, £170,552 for a draw and receive an additional £1.9million if they overcome the group stages and qualify for the knockouts.

The Verdict: Signs of how far they have come

These figures discussed that West Ham are going to receive just for participating in the European competition demonstrates how far the club has come since Moyes returned to the club in December 2019.

As well as the potential prize money, the revenue from TV deals, where they will get 40 per cent of the money available for England, will be a welcomed addition to the coffers at the club.

If the club can construct a good run in the competition and possibly earn qualification again next season with another strong Premier League showing, persistently having more of these enormous UEFA profits will only help every area of the club going forward.

Harmison calls for unity

Steve Harmison has become the first England squad player to speak out on the rift between Peter Moores and Kevin Pietersen, urging the pair to sort out their differences for the good of the team.Often happier to stay away from media attention, Harmison said the issue is not about individuals and any split in the camp will tear the team apart.”They have got to get their heads together and have a chat and sort out the issues,” he told BBC Sport. “It’s about the England cricket team — not Peter Moores or Kevin Pietersen.”It’s not ideal at this moment in time because we are at the start of an Ashes summer and we don’t want it to go on and on with what we’ve got coming over the next nine months. They will come and go like all other players, but they have got to be in harmony because otherwise they will drift the team further apart.”Harmison owes his current England place to Pietersen, who lobbied successfully for his recall the moment he became captain. Harmison returned to face South Africa at The Oval before being persuaded to reverse his one-day retirement and was later included in England’s Stanford Super Series squad. However, the early promise shown on his return faded in India when he was dropped during both the one-day and Test series.Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, and a close friend of Moores, has stepped in to mediate in the row, although the final decision on Moores’ position will be taken by David Collier, the chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The situation, though, is looking increasingly tough to solve through a few handshakes. Moores has only won eight of his 22 Tests in charge, with seven of those against poor New Zealand and West Indies teams.Support for Pietersen has come from Mick Newell, the Nottinghamshire coach, who was involved when Pietersen fell out with the county in 2004 and moved to Hampshire. Newell said that the divide between captain and coach will be hard to mend now that the row has become so public”You want to be backing the captain but you set a very dangerous precedent if you over-rule the coach to give the captain what he wants,” he told the Press Association. “It would be better to get an agreement between them and get on with it but it being in the public domain now makes that more difficult.”It’s Hugh Morris’ job to mediate in all this but, with the stage at which this is at, there does not appear much way back,” he said. “Kevin is our best player by a long way, not only the captain, so it’s a very difficult situation.”We have had things like this at county level several times in the last few years but never at the very top.”

Spinners set up title victory for T&T

Trinidad and Tobago clinched their second major title this year when they defeated Barbados comfortably by seven wickets in a low-scorer to lift the WICB Cup

Cricinfo staff24-Nov-2008
ScorecardTrinidad and Tobago clinched their second major title this year when they defeated Barbados comfortably by seven wickets in a low-scorer to lift the WICB Cup. Spin, Barbados’ eternal bugbear, returned to haunt them as the Man of the Match Samuel Badree and Sherwin Ganga shared five wickets to send Barbados’ crashing to 142. It was then the turn of the captain, Daren Ganga, to steer the side home with an unbeaten 48 in the day-night fixture at Providence.Badree picked up 3 for 14 runs in ten miserly overs while Sherwin supported him well with 2 for 18 from 7.5 overs. But it was Rayad Emrit who put the shakes on the opposition after they chose to bat on another hard, docile Guyana National Stadium pitch, as he ended with 3 for 36.Emrit had the opener Dale Richards caught behind for 8 in the second over and struck a telling blow when Ryan Hinds was caught at square leg for a duck in the fourth to leave Barbados at 10 for 2.Kevin Stoute joined his captain Jason Haynes and they got the innings moving with a stand of 31 for the third wicket. Stoute got into stride with a couple of sweetly timed off-side strokes for boundaries off Ravi Rampaul, but he was fortunate that the stand-in wicketkeeper William Perkins dropped him on 13 off the same bowler in the tenth over.Badree ended the stand, when he had Stoute lbw for 14 in the 14th over, bringing Dwayne Smith to the crease. A metamorphosis has come over Smith’s batting throughout the competition. He has not lost any of his power, but he has become more selective with the balls that he chooses to hit.But he lost his wicket after making 29 and Barbados went on to lose their last four wickets for as many runs. Jonathan Carter top scored with 36 before they were dismissed in the 46th over.A clinical performance by Daren and company was in contrast to their opponents’ inadequate batting and bowling efforts. Daren was steady and purposeful as he and Lendl Simmons put on an unbeaten partnership of 60 to guide T&T to their ninth regional one-day crown. For Daren, it was expectedly a satisfying result. “I think the guys have grown accustomed to winning,” Daren was quoted as saying in . “We came up with a plan of what we wanted to do in the game and executed it. So I am really pleased with the guys and hopefully we can take the momentum into the four-day game this coming season.”He declared that his team’s intensity in training was the key to their results this season, which includes the Stanford 20/20 title.”The guys have trained hard and prepared very well, this is just reward for all the hard work. The guys are understanding how important it is to perform at this level. You know we have concentrated on trying to close the gap between first-class and international cricket, so we prepared and trained with intensity and the guys on our team used our experience at the international level to help the others.”

McLeish: Gers could struggle to keep Kamara

Former Rangers boss Alex McLeish has claimed that there could be a ‘big move in the offing’ for Glen Kamara in the coming months.

The Lowdown: Talks ongoing

The 25-year-old has been at Ibrox since signing from Dundee United in 2019 and has since made 113 appearances for the club, winning the Premiership last season.

The Finland international previously confirmed that talks were ‘ongoing’ over a new contract to see him remain at Ibrox beyond his current contract expiry and the midfielder attracted transfer interest over the summer after impressing for Steven Gerrard’s side last season.

The midfielder, whose current deal lasts until 2023, has started every league game so far this season and he only missed five games last term.

The Latest: McLeish suggests Gers could struggle to keep Kamara

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish has claimed that getting Kamara on a new deal would be a ‘priority’ for the Gers, who he feels may find it difficult to refuse a lucrative transfer offer for the midfielder.

The former Ibrox manager added: “They have done well to tie one or two others down so I would think he would be a priority.

“If not, it only leaves the speculation that possibly there’s a big move in the offing for him. One, perhaps, that Rangers can’t say no to.

“There’s got to be situations like that will crop in the next year or two for Rangers, while they continue to assess the market themselves.”

The Verdict: Stick or twist

Rangers will have to assess the situation from their point of view, deciding whether they should make a huge profit on the £50,000 they paid for Kamara or secure his services for a few more years.

The midfielder currently earns £6.2k-per-week at Ibrox, but after enduring a successful stint in Scotland, a move elsewhere could be on the cards, especially if prospective suitors offer him a much larger package.

Last season, Kamara completed 91% of his passes and won 4.1 duels per game in an impressive campaign for him. His partnership with Steven Davis in midfield was pivotal to the dominance of the league by Gerrard’s side and the club will surely be hoping to keep him on for more seasons.

As McLeish has said, tying him down to a new deal should be a priority, as otherwise the club may be presented with offers that they can’t refuse.

Liverpool fans call for Origi to leave

A number of Liverpool supporters have urged Fenerbahce to sign Divock Origi, following an update regarding the striker’s Reds future.

The Belgian’s Anfield career has been one of the more curious ones of the Jurgen Klopp era.

Origi has undoubtedly contributed to Liverpool’s success, famously scoring in the 2019 Champions League final win over Tottenham, not to mention bagging a brace in the incredible semi-final victory against Barcelona.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

There have been other big moments, too – the dramatic late winner at home to Everton in 2018/19 stands out – but the 26-year-old has become an increasingly ineffective player for the Reds.

For that reason, Origi could still leave this summer, with Fotospor [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter] claiming that Fenerhahce want to sign him before the September 8th transfer cutoff in Turkey.

EDUARDO TIRONI – Colunista do LANCE!:

JOÃO CARLOS ASSUMPÇÃO – Colunista do LANCE!:

Aston Villa determined to sign Weston McKennie

Aston Villa are “determined” to sign Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie and ready to put down a big-money offer for him.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that Dean Smith’s side are keen on luring the USA international to Villa Park this summer, and it now appears that Johan Lange and co are desperate to make that happen.

According to Italian publication Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), there is a long line of suitors for McKennie with Juventus fully aware that he could bring in some good money.

The report adds that while Spurs are in the running too, both Villa and Crystal Palace are “determined to invest cash” to sign him ahead of the competition.

Fans will be buzzing

Hailed as a “leader” by David Wagner, McKennie has already built up top-level experience by playing in the Champions League with Juventus, and also appearing on the international stage a number of times for the USA.

His former boss at Juventus, Andrea Pirlo, hailed him as a “rock” and added: “He’s young and can improve a lot. In my opinion, he’s a midfielder who can play as a No 8 in a three in midfield, right or left. He gets in the box and scores goals but he’s also very good at winning the ball back.

“His role is in a three in midfield as one of the two players on either side of the regista. Last year we played in a different system, so he had to adapt.”

As per CIES, McKennie’s value stands at an eye-watering £60m, not least due to him playing for a big club like Juventus now, but also because of his considerable ability and experience already at just 22 years of age.

Given the kind of impressive signings Villa have already made this summer – not least the likes of Emi Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings – one area that they haven’t actually addressed is central midfield.

In McKennie, they would be getting someone as Pirlo says, who can play in a number of different roles in the engine room, and also have the ability and dynamism to break into the box and score goals too.

Whether it’s winning the ball back, or making late runs into the area, McKennie appears to be the kind of do-it-all midfielder that would surely get fans excited. So, news that they club are “determined” to land him this summer should have them absolutely buzzing.

Meanwhile, Gregg Evans has dropped a late night Aston Villa claim…
