NSW crash spectacularly to defeat

ScorecardWestern Australia completed an eight-wicket win after a dramatic collapse from New South Wales, during which they lost their last six wickets for three runs on the final day at the WACA Ground. The result took them to the top of the Sheffield Shield, level on 26 points with South Australia but ahead on net run rate.NSW had begun the fourth day on 4 for 102 in their second innings, still behind Western Australia by 16 runs. The overnight batsmen Ryan Carters and Peter Nevill added 21 more to take the lead, and then the implosion came out of nowhere. The chief wrecker was the part-time offspinner Marcus North, who began the collapse by dismissing Nevill for 23. Michael Hogan then got Carters and Sean Abbott in the 48th over, and NSW had lost three wickets without an addition to the score.North picked up two more wickets, with the last ball of the 51st over and the first of the 53rd, to finish with 3 for 9 in six overs. NSW had lost five wickets for one run. Jason Behrendorff ended the innings by having Trent Copeland caught behind, to finish with 4 for 35 and nine wickets in the match. NSW had been shot out for 126.Western Australia had to score 9 to win, but they lost two wickets to offspinner Manjot Singh in the first over, before Adam Voges hit the winning boundary in the third.

Botafogo-PB supera o Náutico e vai a final inédita no Nordestão

O TIMBU ACORDOU

'I will come back stronger' – Finn

Steven Finn has insisted that the collapse in his bowling form has been exaggerated and that after leaving England’s tour of Australia prematurely he can make a quick return next summer

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Jan-2014Steven Finn has insisted that the collapse in his bowling form has been exaggerated and that after leaving England’s tour of Australia prematurely he is confident he can quickly make the technical adjustments necessary to return to the international side next summer.Finn did not play in a single Test during England’s 5-0 whitewash but pronounced himself “knackered” by his perpetual attempts to sort out his malfunctioning bowling action in the nets. Giving his only interview to ecb.co.uk – English cricket’s in-house website – he said he had felt his action was “close to clicking on numerous occasions and dismissed some media coverage as “uninformed”.”I have worked very hard on this tour,” Finn said in an interview also freely available on the ECB’s YouTube site. “I have put lots and lots of hours in to try to make my bowling action right. I arrived on the tour very confident I could play a full part in the Ashes series. As the series went on, and as we moved into the one-day leg of the tour, it is clear that there are a couple of technical issues I need to address.”At times it has felt like I have been banging my head against a brick wall, trying to make it right and trying to be prepared to play and take myself out of this environment, a competitive environment, and work with people what I’ve worked with before, I’m really looking forward to it.”We will address what needs addressing, make a plan and stick to that religiously. There have been times on this trip when it has felt so close to clicking. Bowling in the nets before the Prime Minister’s XI game I bowled nicely, I bowled with decent pace, I bowled quite consistently, but it’s the infrequency with which that has happened which has probably led to me going home.”It’s close to clicking and it’s not going to take too much to get me back where I want to be.”Finn echoed the belief of Angus Fraser, director of cricket at Middlesex and a long-time confidant, that he needed to fall in love with the game again.”I’d love to stay out here and put myself up for selection… It’s got to a point on the tour where I suppose the constant setbacks I’ve had in the nets it’s going to be good for me to get away and clear my head for a couple of weeks and, as Angus said, just fall in the love with the game again. I do love the game but at times it’s been hard to love it because I’ve been fighting myself so much.Steve Finn says it will not be too long before he is putting his hand up for selection again•Getty Images

“It’s tough for me to leave the tour, I’m upset I’m leaving the tour because I want to be helping England win games of cricket… but I do feel that it’s best if I go home now.”Finn accepts that he has minimal chance of being included in England’s World Twenty plans in Bangladesh as he will have no matches to prove that his troubles are behind him. His target is England’s one-day series against Sri Lanka in mid-May.”As far as the West Indies tour goes, it;s going to be difficult to put up my hand for selection… the focus for me is getting back for Middlesex and playing some early season cricket and try to put my hand up for those one-dayers in mid-May.”He did not give an interview to the media to give an honest appraisal of the situation he was in, but still attacked some of the coverage as “uninformed”.”I am nowhere near as far away as some people have been suggesting in the press,” he said. “It is quite an uninformed view from people who haven’t seen me bowl much. I have been doing a lot of bowling away from people’s eyes. I feel it is not far away from clicking but I have had two-and-a-half months feeling like that.”In terms of the technical things, they are not massive things. I’ve aligned my run-ups – my run-ups are nice straight line to the crease now – I did a lot of work on that last summer – and it’s just about getting the timing of my arms and legs working at the same time. Sometimes a little thing can throw you out on either of those things but once my arms and my legs start working together again I feel I can come out of this a better bowler.”I am not sure I will take a Test wicket or an ODI or T20 wicket for granted ever again.”When you are busting a gut every time you step into the nets, sometimes it can be a case of trying too hard. I am knackered come the end of this tour now because I have spent so many hours in the nets trying to put things right.”It’s not massive things. I’ve not forgotten how to bowl.”

More mismatch than rematch

In theory this is the rematch of the most recent Champions Trophy final. In reality, it looms as a serious mismatch

In theory this is the rematch of the most recent Champions Trophy final. In reality, it looms as a serious mismatch. In 2006 in Mumbai, an Australian side featuring Adam Gilchrist, Glenn McGrath, Damien Martyn, Brad Hogg and Andrew Symonds polished off a disappointing Brian Lara-led West Indies outfit to take the title. Flash forward three years and Australia, the defending champions, have lost much of their aura and sit second on the ODI rankings. They are by no means favourites to hold the title but they should kick off their tournament with victory over a mish-mash of second-string West Indians who were beaten at home by Bangladesh but did give Pakistan a scare this week.Australia have just beaten England 6-1, so their form is impressive. However, they have only just arrived in South Africa and without any warm-up matches they must resist the temptation to treat this game as a centre-wicket practice. A resounding win is required to give them momentum ahead of their matches against India and Pakistan – the teams are competing for two semi-finals spots. Weariness could be a factor and Ricky Ponting said this week the squad featured a lot of tired bodies after a four-month tour of England. Australia are also without their one-day specialist Nathan Bracken, although there is plenty of pace-bowling backup in the squad. For this replacement West Indies side it’s business as usual – they enter the game as severe underdogs with no expectations on their shoulders. Gavin Tonge, who starred against Pakistan, forms part of a handy attack along with Darren Sammy and, if he plays, Kemar Roach. But the batting is fragile and West Indies’ best hope could be to bowl first and hope for early-morning swing and seam to upset Australia’s top order.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)Australia – LWWWW
West Indies – LLLLNR
Team newsAustralia have lost their highest-ranked one-day international bowler, Bracken, who has been sent home due to an ongoing knee problem. It means a reshuffling of the attack, which will be led by Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson. All the bowlers were given a run during the series in England and Peter Siddle appears the likely immediate beneficiary of Bracken’s absence. Australia will also be without their vice-captain Michael Clarke, who was suffering from back pain after the flight from England to South Africa. He missed Thursday’s practice but the coach Tim Nielsen said his condition was “improving”. His spot could go to the allrounder James Hopes.”Since arriving here and having had to travel from Durham down to London and London to Johannesburg, he’s stiffened up quite considerably,” Nielsen said. “At the moment it’s a day-by-day proposition for us and he’s improving, but with the whole tournament in mind we’re taking a conservative approach, so he won’t play tomorrow.”Australia (possible): 1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Callum Ferguson, 6 Cameron White, 7 James Hopes, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Nathan Hauritz, 11 Peter Siddle.Neither the fast bowler Kemar Roach nor the batsman Kieran Powell played in the loss to Pakistan and they could strengthen the West Indies line-up. The real team news, of course, has been well documented before the tournament began. Not much was expected of the side and they put in a commendable effort in the opening game. But regardless of which XI they put out on the field, they should be far too weak for Australia.West Indies (possible): 1 Dale Richards, 2 Andre Fletcher, 3 Devon Smith, 4 Travis Dowlin, 5 Floyd Reifer (capt), 6 David Bernard, 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Chadwick Walton (wk), 9 Nikita Miller, 10 Tino Best, 11 Gavin Tonge.Watch out for…Having sat out of the entire Ashes series, Brett Lee had a point to prove in the one-dayers in England. What he confirmed was that he remains a fearsome force in one-day cricket with his fast, accurate bowling and mastery of the yorker. It was enough to rattle England and if he finds his rhythm, the weakened West Indies top order will have a major challenge on their hands.West Indies have found a quality bowler of their own in Tonge, whose 4 for 25 against Pakistan gave his team a sniff in a low-scoring match. West Indies’ batting does not look threatening, so their best chance may be if Australia’s batsmen don’t give the Caribbean attack due respect. If that is the case, Tonge has the ability to pounce.Pitch and conditions The Wanderers was the venue of the low-scoring Pakistan-West Indies match, and the early-morning start will add to the assistance for the fast bowlers. The forecast for Saturday is sunny and 28 degrees.Stats and trivia The 15 men in the West Indies squad between them have played 130 one-day internationals; Australia’s 14 remaining players have a combined 1094 ODI caps Australia’s recent form at the Wanderers is good. They beat South Africa there in a one-day international in April, having also triumphed in the Test match there earlier in the tour Australia and West Indies met in the final of the previous Champions Trophy in Mumbai three years ago. It is likely only four players from that match will take part in this game: Ricky Ponting, Lee, Michael Hussey and Shane WatsonQuotes”West Indies will get the respect they deserve from us. There is nothing we can do about the contractual dispute.”
.”Hopefully [the pitch] will be behaving the same way when we meet Australia. I will put the ball on the same spot and let the pitch do the same.”

Canterbury batsmen keep hopes alive

A round-up of HRV Cup matches that took place on January 5

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jan-2014Canterbury rode on powerful performances from their middle order to post 201 for 6 and beat Auckland by 21 runs at the Hagley Oval. The win kept Canterbury alive in the HRV Cup. Peter Fulton was their top-scorer with 48 off 31 balls, while Brendon Diamanti was the most explosive batsman, smacking 25 off 10 deliveries at the finish. James Fuller and Colin de Grandhomme were the only Auckland bowlers to concede fewer than 10 runs an over. Auckland’s chase had a fast start with Anaru Kitchen making 44, and after a clutch of wickets fell, de Grandhomme launched his attack. Auckland had progressed to 120 for 3 in the 13th over and were on course when Kitchen was dismissed. De Grandhomme fell shortly after, for 65 off 33 balls, and the chase fizzled out. Canterbury seamer Andrew Ellis, who had contributed 23 off 15 balls with the bat, took 3 for 28.Otago’s top order complemented the restrictive work of their bowlers to secure a seven-wicket victory against Central Districts at Pukekura Park. After losing the toss, Otago’s attack struck frequent blows and controlled the run rate to reduce Central Districts to 28 for 4 in the seventh over. Kieran Noema-Barnett propped up the innings with 52 and Doug Bracewell contributed 35 off 20, but they were the only batsmen to make it past 20. Jacob Duffy took 3 for 29 for Otago, while James McMillian and Jimmy Neesham took two each to keep Central Districts to 147 for 9. Otago lost Neil Broom early in the chase but Aaron Redmond made 32 off 18 balls and Ryan ten Doeschate scored an unbeaten 50 off 32 to seal victory with 15 deliveries to spare.
