Bad day for Ashes hopefuls

Khawaja, Hughes, Smith and Ahmed failed collectively as Gloucestershire rounded up Australia A for 111 in their second innings, before a strong batting performance left them sniffing at an unlikely win

Driving to Bristol for a round of pre-Ashes preparatory talks with a strong overnight score in their minds, Australia’s coach Mickey Arthur and the team performance manager Pat Howard could have been forgiven for expecting more encouraging developments on their arrival. Instead the sunshine and good cheer of day one was to be replaced by far grimmer stuff – and not just because the weather in Bristol had turned from balmy to a chill wind and grey sky.Having rounded up the remainder of the Gloucestershire first innings for the addition of only 18 more runs, Australia A folded quite heedlessly for 111 in the second innings after declining to enforce the follow-on. This offered the hosts an unexpected window into the match, one left well and truly open by a stumps score of 162 for 3 in pursuit of 321.Arthur and Howard have a few issues in front of them, but the form of the batsmen to join the Ashes squad in Taunton on Monday is a mounting one. As far as Ashes preparations were concerned, this was a far from satisfactory day. Usman Khawaja and Phillip Hughes were unable to register scores of any note, while the likely first reserve batsman Steve Smith edged the seaming ball to be out for a duck. The trio had been promoted to Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in the batting order in an effort to give them some quality batting time, but none was to be had by anyone.Even Nic Maddinson, so impudent during his first-day 181, was cut down to size, flicking a catch down the leg side to depart first ball. Maddinson was one of four wickets for Will Gidman, who capitalised on the more generous allocation of swing and seam provided by overcast skies and a pitch freshened by overnight moisture.Gloucestershire were also aided by a pair of run-outs, each a direct hit from James Fuller, who roamed the deep and caught, first Khawaja and then Jordan Silk, short of their ground. Such charity from the visitors will not have pleased the bowlers, who soon found themselves defending a smaller advantage than had seemed possible when Smith chose to have another bat.So poor was Australia A’s innings in fact that the top score went to Matthew Wade with 28, his runs scored either side of a painful blow to the groin that forced the wicketkeeper to his haunches for several minutes. Ashton Agar was next best with 27, demonstrating, albeit briefly, that his languid athletic talent is not limited to slow left-arm spin. Nonetheless, a scoreboard reading 88 for 8 and then concluding on “Nelson” does not bode well for numerologists nor Australian Ashes optimists. To be in the field again within 35.1 overs of dismissing Gloucestershire the first time did not appear to agree with several of the Australia A bowlers, who with few exceptions had been much sharper when the day began. Ryan Harris induced an outside edge from Gidman in the first over of the morning, before Fawad Ahmed offered evidence of his legspin’s bite by having Benny Howell pouched at slip, then fizzing his next ball past Tom Smith’s outside edge.Neither Harris nor Ahmed would be quite so compelling in the afternoon, which also provided a lesson for Chadd Sayers, the South Australian seam and swing operative. Having nipped out two wickets in his first over of the day to claim the handsome figures of 5 for 24, Sayers looked considerably short of rhythm and accuracy when he returned. He did improve later on and added the wickets of Chris Dent and Dan Housego, but Gloucestershire were by then growing in confidence. They reached the close with Gareth Roderick accompanied by Dan Christian, who appeared intent on getting the better of his countrymen while sprinting to 40 from 42 balls in the final hour. He took a particular liking to the spin of Ahmed, taking 35 runs from the 31 balls he faced. As they pondered whether to expand the size of the Ashes squad by one or two on Sunday, that was yet another reason for Arthur and Howard’s brows to furrow.

WICB promote another title fight

What Xavier Marshall doesn’t need is to hear from the WICB that his latest offence is “not a matter for us to deal with”, says Tony Cozier

The Stanford-Digicel dispute could get more volatile in the coming weeks © Getty Images
Unconsciously, but consistently and under whatever dispensation, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has become as adept at fight promotion as Don King.It was responsible for the lengthy bout a few years back between Cable & Wireless, its former sponsor, and Digicel, its successor, two foreign telecommunications companies on which it relied for much of its finance. Other scraps have followed, mostly involving itself and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), all of which went to the judges who ruled against it.It has also engaged in a couple of sparring sessions with some former star players, the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC), prominent umpires and certain television commentators. It has even beat up on itself over some nonsense about who paid, or did not pay, for renovations to the president’s office. Now it finds itself in the middle of yet another fierce contest between two formidable heavyweights. In one corner is the same Digicel that eventually won its earlier fight with Cable & Wireless, in the other, its latest benefactor, the Antigua-based Texan billionaire Sir Allen Stanford. A barrage of punches and counter-punches has been thrown. There has been a lot of bobbing and weaving and some fancy footwork but, unless one or the other concedes or they agree to call it a draw, it goes to the judges at the London Court of International Arbitration on October 3 for the decision.Whichever way they decide, the consequent damage to the WICB, especially, but not only, financial, has the potential to be crushing for an organisation that is just beginning to come out of the red.Already legal costs are known to be steep, and rising. Only the repeated assertion of both warring parties that they have the interest of West Indies cricket at heart and, as such, that proceedings against the WICB into which they have heavily invested would be counterproductive is likely to prevent consequent law suits. As the official sponsor of the West Indies team, Digicel’s contract, extended this year to 2012, is worth US$20 million. In the two years since he initiated the Stanford 20/20 tournaments, Stanford has pumped an estimated US$80 million into West Indies cricket. Yet future relationships between them and the WICB must be decidedly awkward as a result of the controversy. They will wonder, as we all do, how the WICB so frequently gets itself into such situations. At the heart of the dispute is Digicel’s claim that, under its sponsorship agreement with the WICB, it is entitled to sponsorship and entitlement rights to WICB-sanctioned matches between the Stanford Superstars and England, at the Stanford Cricket Ground, over the next five years for US$20 million each time, the largest payout for a single sporting match anywhere. The WICB had already recognised the Stanford 20/20 as its official regional domestic tournament. With the additional endorsement of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the necessary approval of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Superstars match was launched with flash and fanfare at Lord’s, cricket’s traditional home, in June. Each board is to receive US$3.5 million annually from the pot. The players on the winning team collect US$1 million each, the remainder to be split between the reserves and the management staff. There has been extensive planning and promotion of the showdown, scheduled for November 1. England have picked their squad, the Superstars are mid-way through a preparatory camp in Antigua, a match between the respective domestic 20/20 champions, Middlesex and Trinidad and Tobago, has been added to the mix. There is a global advertising campaign that extended to, of all places, a ground perimeter board at England’s football match against Croatia in Zagreb earlier this month. For the moment, the event is on hold after the bilateral dispute resolution process between Digicel and the WICB initially failed to resolve the issue and Digicel filed its injunction with the High Court in London to await the October 3 judgement of the Court of International Arbitration. In the meantime, Digicel and Stanford have been slugging away at each other while the WICB wait silently and anxiously for the outcome. The arbitrators have to decide between the opposing contentions.Digicel notes that, according to its contract with the WICB, any team that “represents, purports to represent or may reasonably be perceived as representing the West Indies” falls within its sponsorship agreement. It claims that the Stanford Superstars team comprises West Indies players and “must therefore reasonably be seen to be a team representing the West Indies – and not one solely representing the interests of a private individual”.Not so at all, counter the WICB and Stanford. They point out that the Superstars were picked by a selection panel and have a coach, an assistant coach and a support staff different and distinct from the West Indies team.”We entered into an agreement with the West Indies Cricket Board and the England and Wales Cricket Board with the clear understanding that we have an agreement to play this match with the Stanford 20/20 (organisation) having the sole rights to sell the marketing, branding, TV, etc. worldwide,” Stanford said. “There were no other restrictions placed on us.”Each side has offered compromises but none has been mutually acceptable. Digicel’s three points were that no telecoms company would be involved in the event (there was the red rag of a rumoured Cable & Wireless’ connection), that the Stanford organisation pay for their legal costs and that the Superstars team wear Digicel-branded West Indies kits in the big match against England.Stanford agreed to the first two conditions, adding in a few branding rights for free (14 ground perimeter boards, branding on the bowlers’ run ups, ads on the big screen and in the series programme). Predictably, he wouldn’t budge on the kits issue, stating that Digicel wanted that concession at no extra cost. There is where it stands, except for talk that would please Don King for any title fight.”Throughout this process, numerous threats have been made against Digicel relating to a damaging media and PR campaign,” came the charge from one side. “By deliberately and unfairly attacking Digicel in the media through the release of a misleading press statement, Digicel is entitled to question the existence of a genuine willingness to resolve the matter amicably and through respectful dialogue.””Stanford 20/20 will not be bullied in this way and will respond appropriately to such behaviour under legal advice,” the other side declared. And it’s unlikely to get any less volatile in the coming weeks. It’s an all too familiar, and harmful, scenario for West Indies cricket.

Rob Walter, the current South African conditioning coach, will take charge of Titans on a two-year contract. Walter succeeds Matthew Maynard, who opted not to renew his contract in order to work on his late son, Tom’s foundation.Walter will remain with the national team for the Champions Trophy and will take charge of his new post on July 1. His first assignment will be the Champions League T20 in India in September. This is Walter’s first coaching job, although he has previously been involved as an assistant with the same union under Dave Nosworthy. He was selected over 19 other applicants, including former Australian bowling coach, Craig Mcdermott, Zimbabwe batting coach, Grant Flower and former Titans’ coach, Richard Pybus.Walter has been South Africa’s fitness trainer for six years and, more recently, doubled up as the fielding coach as well. He has also worked with Delhi Daredevils and Pune Warriors. He had applied for the Titans post two years ago, when Maynard got the job, and the franchise decided the time was right to appoint Walter now.”When we analysed it then, there was not much between Matthew and Rob, but Matthew’s international experience just pipped Rob,” Vincent Sinovich, Titans chairman said. “Rob was shortlisted and he was definitely in the front row. This time we went with him.”Much will be expected of Walter, especially at the franchise which has been the most successful in the country since the system was put in place in the 2004-05 season. Titans have won nine trophies in as many years but went without silverware last summer. They finished last in the first-class competition, which they were defending, but ended runners-up in the twenty-over tournament to somewhat rectify a tough period. They also suffered several player losses, including that of fast-bowler Hardus Viljoen, who joined the Lions.Walter’s first task will be to ensure the player base is solid enough to challenge for honours again but Jacques Faul, Titans CEO, said the administration will not place too much pressure on their new coach. “It’s tough to expect him to have trophies in year one, but we will sit down with him in terms of a performance contract and agreement,” he said. “Obviously, we would like to be in the CLT20.”His biggest challenge in getting that right will be to address the more technical aspects of the game. Having never played or coached, Walter may have to call on specialists to work in the various departments, although he is also studying towards his Level 4 qualification. One of the specialists he could call on could be Gary Kirsten, who recently resigned from the South African job and has worked extensively with Walter. Faul also hinted that national bowling coach, Allan Donald could be used as a consultant as well. “We will look at people to help him but I think he will develop as a technical coach,” Faul said.Titans’ captain Henry Davids, who has played for South Africa’s T20 team, is optimistic that the experience Walter has gained from being part of the senior squad will over-ride his lack of expertise in other areas. “I’ve worked with him in the T20 squad and he has been doing a lot of hard yards, throwing balls to players and that kind of thing – just learning,” he said. But there is more to modern-day coaching than simply teaching cover drives and Davids believes Walter’s man management will be key to the franchise’s success. “You have to have to know what makes players tick on the day and how to handle them. It’s the small things. It’s up to the players to win matches, but it’s for the coach to get the whole squad into a good frame of mind. I’m sure he will do that,” Davids said.
