Pakistan staring down the barrel of defeat by NZ A

New Zealand A continued the Pakistan team’s tour of misery through New Zealand yesterday when finishing the second day of their three-day game by pinning the visitors on the ropes

Lynn McConnell04-Mar-2001New Zealand A continued the Pakistan team’s tour of misery through New Zealand yesterday when finishing the second day of their three-day game by pinning the visitors on the ropes.Pakistan, 178 runs behind NZ A on the first innings were 108/4 at stumps with a cloud over opening batsman Saeed Anwar who has a groin injury and who has yet to bat.NZ A’s effort in scoring 278 was the most significant feature of the match so far and could yet be the decisive innings against a team which looked to be struggling for concentration and application. The home team struck a decisive blow in their victory bid when the best Pakistan batsman in the match, Imran Farhat, was out for 51 just before stumps, when attempting to hit leg spinner Brooke Walker out of the ground. He was well held by Kyle Mills at mid on and the home team were in a good position to emulate the feat of the 1997/98 England team.New Zealand A’s innings was dominated by CLEAR Black Cap team-mates Jacob Oram and Lou Vincent. Vincent was unlucky to be given out caught behind when on 57. He appeared upset at the decision, a situation which set in train the loss of three wickets for three.Vincent batted with assurance in getting to his 50 off 95 balls and hit seven fours while the 100 partnership with Oram came up in 98 minutes off 135 balls, a good rate against a still respectable Pakistan attack.Oram carried on and once finding an ally in Brooke Walker, set about his own form of attack, bringing up his own 50 with a lovely square cut and then launching into a full scale assault which was particularly severe on off spinner Arshad Khan. One six travelled nearly 100 metres and landed well outside the boundary of what is regarded as the ground with the biggest boundaries in the country. However, the assault brought his own downfall as he got into two minds when going down the pitch to Arshad. Instead of carrying through with a big hit, he attempted to dab the ball past the slip area. But he wasn’t quite precise enough and found substitute fieldsman Moin Khan in the slips.Oram was delighted with his side’s position in the match.”If you had said to us beforehand that we would get 280 and Pakistan would be out for 100 we would have taken that.”You have got to be happy with that,” he said.Oram was disappointed to get out for 88 and said he should have got 100 and plenty.”I’ve had two 90s and a couple of 80s and I got a bit silly,” he said of his dismissal.”I went down the wicket to it and it was a bit shorter than I thought. I went to defend it and was caught in two minds,” he said. The game was only his seventh first-class innings this summer, and his first since the start of January.”I just wanted to get back in the groove of building an innings,” he said.”It is a great facility here and I just wanted to make the most of it.”Having played with the national team during the one-day series had helped his approach in this game. And he found himself reflecting that side’s approach by wanting to be positively aggressive.”People say that this is just a tour game but we were still facing their bowlers and someone like Waqar with 300 Test wickets requires you to be wary of him.”Gary Stead said to me that Mohammad Sami was quicker than anyone else around the country this summer. They were still putting a lot of effort in,” he said.Oram was also pleased with the bowling performance of Chris Drum in both innings, and Kyle Mills for his seven overs into the wind today which succeeded in slowing down Imran Farhat and contributing to his ultimate demise. He should have had him out on 33 but Andrew Penn dropped a high chance at mid on.Play starts at 10.30am tomorrow and the first session will be vital for the NZ A bowlers as they attempt to break through and have to score as few runs as possible to claim the win.

Berrío, enfim, é jogador do Flamengo, crava site colombiano

Nesta quinta-feira, o técnico Zé Ricardo concedeu entrevista coletiva no Ninho do Urubu e elogiou o jogador.

Anamul delivers under expectation

Anamul Haque said he found a sea change between his previous hundreds and the one against West Indies in the second ODI

Anamul Haque said he found a sea change between his previous hundreds and the one against West Indies in the second ODI, the most notable of which was the pressure to deliver under expectation. His century of 138 balls against West Indies was the tenth hundred in his short career. He has gained a habit of making big runs, one that is often missing in Bangladesh batsman.”There’s a lot of difference between scoring hundreds anywhere else and one for Bangladesh,” Anamul said. “I had fantasised of scoring a hundred in international cricket but never thought I would do it in my second game.”In domestic cricket he has scored seven centuries in the last 13 months: five in first-class cricket, two in the one-day competition plus a century in the Dhaka Premier League. The volume of runs last season had made him an automatic choice for back-up opener but he had a miserable time in an unofficial Twenty20 tournament in Zimbabwe which was his first brush with big time cricket. He was sent back to the Under-19s where he made two centuries against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the Under-19 World Cup this year.”I have scored ten hundreds in the last year. The difference between the previous ones and today is the experience of the bowlers,” Haque said. “They bowl fewer loose deliveries and they have a lot of variations in the bounce and the lengths. There’s crowd pressure and I am playing for the country, so there’s a lot of difference.”The highlight of his innings was not just his footwork but the pace of the 145-ball knock. After reaching a half-century off 60 balls, Anamul took another 55 balls to move to 90 before waiting for another 24 balls to reach his century, off 138 balls. He then blasted 20 runs off the next six deliveries he faced, ending up with a 82.75 strike-rate. He would have attracted harsh words had he not made that final dash with two slogged sixes and a boundary off Andre Russell. He said he slowed down after getting to fifty because Mushfiqur Rahim was batting at a faster rate and finding the gaps, added that his constant encounter with the getting to a hundred eased him through the 24 deliveries between 90 and 100. “I am familiarised with the nervous nineties. When the fielders are outside, it is better to find gaps and just take singles. Mushfiqur was batting with me, so I didn’t have much to do.”Bad balls were available so ones, twos and the boundaries were coming. I didn’t need to go after the bowling; it would have been criminal if I tried something extravagant at that stage.”Mushfiqur and Anamul added 174 for the third wicket, just a run short of the all-time highest partnership for Bangladesh in ODIs. Mushfiqur scored 79 off 87 balls with the help of eight fours and a six, an innings that not only raised the run-rate but helped Anamul settle. He was also helped out by Tamim Iqbal in the first game when the more experienced opener went after the West Indies bowlers from the word go.”Tamim kept telling me to stay positive, be confident. If he bats in that manner, I don’t have to do anything. It was the same today because I was batting with the captain.”Mushfiqur told me to carry on till the 45th over, whether we are getting the runs in singles or doubles. We can go for the big hits from that point, we have batsman behind us.”Anamul’s century was the third by a teenager for Bangladesh after Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim but the early success has to be channelled through a proper approach which would iron out his footwork and reflex issues. The competitive age-group system through which he has come out of successfully would help him not to bask on the hundred too much and stay on the course of improvement.

Northamptonshire have confirmed that Jack Brooks, the pace bowler, has been allowed to utilise a get-out clause in his contract to further his international ambitions.Brooks, who made a late start to his professional career having come through Minor County cricket, played for England Lions against the West Indians this season on his home ground. In the Championship he took 23 wickets at 35.69 in a campaign disrupted by injury and overall has 118 first-class wickets at 28.95″I’ve taken this decision to leave Northants because I want to compete at the highest level possible,” Brooks said. “The opportunities being offered to me are too good to turn down, and I owe it to myself to explore all avenues as I continue my quest for international honours.””I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Northants and fully appreciate the support I’ve been given by all at the club. Hopefully, I’ll be remembered for my performances and wholehearted approach to the game.”Head coach David Ripley said: “I am saddened by Jack’s departure, we will miss him both on the field and in the dressing room as he is a real character. He is striving for international honours and domestic trophies, which I believe are both achievable here, but I fully understand and respect his decision to leave. We wish Jack all the best in his future.”David Smith, the chief executive, added that this was a situation clubs are becoming used to these days. “Jack leaving us is a reflection of our more mobile cricket society and of more flexible employment laws that allow players to move between county cricket clubs on a more regular basis than in the past.”The club wants to place on record its appreciation of Jack’s service over the past four years and wish him all the very best for the future. Jack has been a very popular member of our dressing room.”

Thakor the saviour for Leicestershire

Shiv Thakor faced more than 100 balls for his unbeaten 39 as Leicestershire held out for a draw against Northamptonshire

There are still four matches left but Northamptonshire may have seen their chance of a late run for promotion slip away with their failure to see off their east Midlands neighbours. The draw leaves them 15 points adrift of the two teams in second place, which is probably a gap too far at this stage, although they take one of them – Hampshire – at West End on Wednesday.Leicestershire owed their escape to Shiv Thakor, whose influence on the whole contest has identified him as a player with a big future. An England player at Under-17 and Under-19 level, although overlooked for the ongoing Under-19 World Cup in Australia, the 18-year-old effectively saved the follow-on in the first innings and followed up with a wonderfully mature display of defiance to stave off defeat. He finished unbeaten on 39, having batted for two and a half hours under no little pressure as Northamptonshire, having given themselves 88 overs to bowl Leicestershire out, chipped away relentlessly in search of ten wickets. They finished with eight, having whittled out every recognised batsmen bar one, the teenager. Thakor faced 105 balls and was notably impressive against James Middlebrook, the offspinner, rarely putting a foot wrong even with six or even seven fielders around the bat, as was the case while he batted out the last five deliveries of the contest. As in the first innings, he teamed up most effectively with Claude Henderson, Leicestershire’s 40-year-old left-arm spinner. Their unlikely alliance put on 52 this time, more importantly using up 18 overs. His focus turns now to his A-level results, due on Thursday, with offers to weigh up from Durham, Cardiff and Loughborough Universities.Phil Whitticase, Leicestershire’s head coach, is enthused by what the youngster, who also bowls useful medium pace, might become.”He gave a really mature and responsible performance in the first innings and to do it again in the second innings, under that kind of pressure, when you lose a couple of wickets and find yourself taking the lead role, showed a maturity beyond his years,” Whitticase said. “He is mentally strong, too, and when you get that in someone so young it can only speak well of him.”He has been in our system since he was eight and has been brought up the right way. He has worked with Trevor Ward, at Uppingham School, where he has been since before his GCSEs, and he has been in the England system, too, so he has been taught a lot about how to play spin bowling, how to cope with sledging. But it is one thing talking about it, quite another to actually do it in high pressure moments.”He has a big decision to make this week. From our point of view, if he decides to defer university a while and concentrate on cricket it would be great but I’m not going to try to make his decision for him. I know that education is an important part of his life.”Impressive though Thakor was, however, it was an opportunity missed by Northamptonshire, who may rue their decision to bat on for 25 minutes on the final morning. Leicestershire finished so far away from the 353 they needed, in theory, to move off the bottom of the table that it was a mystery why Andrew Hall wasted eight overs by not declaring with their overnight lead of 311. By continuing, he at least gave a seemingly out-of-sorts Robbie Joseph time to take his only wicket of the match (26 overs, 1 for 138) by bowling Rob Newton, but seemed to serve no one else’s interests.Nonetheless, the Northamptonshire bowlers gave themselves a chance of finishing the job. After ten of the 88 overs, they had Leicestershire 30 for 2, which would have been 28 for 3 had Alex Wakely not let a chance slip through his hands at third slip. Michael Thornely had driven Andrew Hall off the back foot straight to mid-off and Will Jones, who despatched David Willey with a cracking drive through the covers for four, edged to edge to second slip two balls later. It was Ramnaresh Sarwan who enjoyed the let-off.In the event, it was not a costly miss. Sarwan had added only 11 more runs when, with left-armer Willey bowling round the wicket, he lost his off stump trying to drive a ball that was too full.A half-century from Ned Eckersley offered some measure of resistance, but Matt Boyce could not stay with him long and Leicestershire began to hope that the forecast rain would intervene in their favour. It never came, but Thakor did and stayed, for 40 overs. There was a disappointing blow when Josh Cobb, who played well for his 28, was caught trying to drive Willey and a more predictable one when Wayne White swished at a ball from Middlebrook and was bowled. Seven down entering the final hour, the odds still seemed heavily against Leicestershire’s survival but Thakor and Henderson were resolute. The latter’s dismissal with 16 balls left, deflecting the ball on to his stumps as he tried to leave, caused a flurry of late excitement, but Thakor’s nerve never wavered.
