Cricket South Africa (CSA) is considering a request from the Bangladesh board president Mustafa Kamal for South Africa to play Bangladesh in May, CSA’s acting chief executive Jacques Faul has said. Kamal made a request to CSA president Willie Basson last week and offered to pay all the costs, whether the series takes place in Bangladesh or South Africa.”We have received the request and we are in the process of checking whether it would be possible,” Faul told ESPNcricinfo. “We’ve got nothing against it, it’s just about scheduling. At the moment, I can say it is a request we are looking at.”Faul will meet with the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) and national coach Gary Kirsten next week to discuss the possibility of playing the series. He said the decision will be based on South Africa’s schedule and whether this fixture can be included without causing fatigue. “We always want to play cricket and foster cricket but we’ve got to be careful with how much preparation and how much rest we give our team,” Faul said. “It is quite important how we pace the team.”Bangladesh have no international cricket scheduled before the World Twenty20 in September. Their trip to Pakistan, for an ODI and a T20 later this month, was put on hold after a court order placed a four-week embargo on the tour, and their visit to Zimbabwe in August was postponed because of work being done on the pitches in Harare and Bulawayo.By contrast, South Africa’s schedule is busy. Having already spent a month in New Zealand, they will go to England for more than two months in early July, head straight to Sri Lanka for the World T20, tour Australia in October and November and then host New Zealand during the home summer.Even if all parties agree the Bangladesh-South Africa series should go ahead, it will face a number of logistical problems. With the IPL only ending on May 27, South Africa could be without some of their key players. Twenty South African players, including limited-overs captain AB de Villiers and bowlers Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, are involved in the IPL. Bangladesh, though, only have two players in the competition – Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal.Another issue will be location. The matches are unlikely to be held in Bangladesh because of the heat in summer and Faul confirmed South Africa, where it will be winter in May, was the only possibility as a venue. “Winter will be a factor for sure,” Faul said. “Durban is a possible venue but the Highveld [Johannesburg and Centurion] will be out.” Cape Town, where in rains in winter, will also not be a possibility.Another option would be for the series to be held in Zimbabwe, who were approached by the BCB to participate in a tri-series with South Africa. While Zimbabwe Cricket officials could not be reached on Sunday for confirmation on whether they received the request and were considering it, cricket can be played there during their winter. They will host South Africa for five T20 matches, which have not been given international status, in June before maintenance work on their two main centres begins.Zimbabwe could also travel to South Africa for the proposed tri-series and Faul said CSA would welcome the idea. “We always try to help Zimbabwe, we have an obligation to them because we are closest to them and we try to look after them where we can.”

Horton the difference again for Lancashire

Paul Horton carried his bat for Lancashire as the champions built a valuable 68-run lead in the brief spell of play possible between the rain

Match-winning innings come in many guises. Some feature all-guns blazing attack, others are filled with little but attritional obduracy. After a day which contained just nine overs’ cricket, it is still far too early to tell if Paul Horton’s 225-minute 49 not out will come to be classed as the patient vigil which set up Lancashire’s first Championship win of the season. All we can assert is that the opener’s patient skill helped Lancashire build a 68-run first-innings lead and that at least one or two Durham batsmen will need to exhibit similar technical competence on the third day of this match if that lead is not to prove as decisive as it already appears in a low-scoring game. The Durham top order may need a dollop of luck too. Horton was bowled by a no-ball when on 6 and dropped at slip on 11. When the ball is seaming around and swinging you need the breaks to go your way. However,Durham head coach Geoff Cook might be quietly reminding his players in the morning that it also helps if you don’t attempt brainless slashes at balls that barely pitch on the cut strip. These conditions are difficult, but as Paul Collingwood, Luke Procter and Kyle Hogg have also proved, they are not unplayable. They just require a good technique, a sound temperament and a little good fortune. In other words, proper batting.”The ball has swung,” Horton said. “But I think on this pitch it’s also seamed against the swing. If both seam and swing go the same way, you can line it up. If one goes one way and the other another, that’s quite tough. Graham Onions was seaming the ball both ways at good pace, which was tough. Luke Procter swung the ball both ways for us, which made it tough as well. The bowlers who have had most success in this game have moved the ball both ways in their own fashion.”The facts of the day are briefly told. Lancashire’s last two wickets added 29 runs to the overnight total, Hogg making a resourceful 33 before being snared by Steve Harmison, and Onions taking Simon Kerrigan’s wicket to finish with 5 for 43. The Durham seamer may not win his ninth Test cap next Thursday but he has looked an international cricketer in this match. The England selectors have a severe embarrassment of seam-bowling riches. Durham’s second innings lasted just three balls before the rain, which had delayed the start of play until 3.30pm, began scudding across the ground once again. This time it did not relent.Yet the day carried enough historical significance to have more than one Lancastrian reminisicing about the exploits of Winston Place and Jack Ikin. Horton is only the sixth Lancashire batsman since the war to carry his bat through a completed innings and the first to manage it since Alec Swann achieved the feat against Hampshire at Old Trafford in 2002. However, he has a long way to go before equalling the remarkable exploits of RG Barlow, who batted through 11 innings. In 1882 Barlow opened the innings and was 5 not out when Lancashire were dismissed for 69. When he was becalmed for 34 minutes on 11, a similar statistical notoriety seemed to lie in wait for Horton.”I can’t remember if I’ve carried my bat before, but I didn’t want to carry it for 11 not out,” he said. “It was just about playing my way. I wanted to get over the new ball and see if we could build a lead. I thought Kyle played well, so did Luke Procter and even Simon Kerrigan hung around. Everyone chipped in. It doesn’t matter what I get, it’s what the team does.”Just so, of course. And the question Durham supporters will be asking on the third morning is whether their own batsmen can apply themselves with the self-discipline that will be required if they are to escape from the bottom of the table.

Fazemos poucas faltas. O adversário pôde empatar. Empataram merecidamente no final.

Russell four sets up comfortable Windies win

New Zealand’s inexperienced line-up crumbled against disciplined bowling led by Andre Russell and their bowlers were swatted away by Chris Gayle and Dwayne Smith

The Report by Abhishek Purohit05-Jul-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsChris Gayle thumped an unbeaten 63 off 57•WICB

New Zealand got a sampler of how tough this ODI series could get for them when their inexperienced line-up crumbled against disciplined bowling led by Andre Russell and their bowlers were swatted away by Chris Gayle and Dwayne Smith. The sharp Russell struck with his first delivery, in the second over, and New Zealand were always under pressure after that. BJ Watling, the wicketkeeper-batsman, hung around to ensure New Zealand batted out 50 overs, something they hadn’t looked like achieving at 71 for 5 in the 24th over.In contrast, Gayle and Smith bulldozed their way to 93 for 1 in 18 overs before returning after an almost two-hour rain break to motor to the revised target of 136 in 33 overs with 52 deliveries to spare. The game, though, had almost been decided during New Zealand’s disappointing innings. The visitors made the Sabina Park surface look much worse than it actually was. There was bounce, but little seam movement, and the swing wasn’t unmanageable. West Indies, though, made superb use of whatever was on offer, Russell finding just enough away shape to have Guptill edging his sixth ball low to second slip. That was one of the few wickets New Zealand did not give away.Daniel Flynn seemed to have recovered from a scratchy start only to chop a drive onto his stumps; Rob Nicol looked alright before charging and holing out to deep square leg to give Russell his third wicket in his fifth over.New Zealand were 36 for 3 in ten overs when Sunil Narine came on to bowl, and predictably, they had no clue what was coming their way. Thumb or no thumb on the ball, they could not make out the big offspinner from the carrom ball. Dean Brownlie scratched around for 13 balls to make one run before being caught plumb in front by a straighter one from Narine.Smart stats

West Indies’ win is their eighth by a margin of nine or more wickets in a home ODI (target greater than 100 runs). The last time they achieved it was against Pakistan at Providence last year.

It is also West Indies’ 25th win against New Zealand in ODIs. The last time the teams played in the West Indies (2007 World Cup), New Zealand won by seven wickets.

Andre Russell’s 4 for 45 is the ninth haul of four or more wickets for West Indies in an ODI against New Zealand. It is, however, the third-best bowling performance by a West Indian bowler in a home ODI against New Zealand.

The number of sixes hit by West Indies (8) equals their record for the most sixes hit in an innings lasting less than 25 overs.

The 130-run stand between Chris Gayle and Dwayne Smith is the second-highest second-wicket stand for West Indies against New Zealand. The record is 184 between Larry Gomes and Desmond Haynes in Barbados in 1985.

Lendl Simmons’ duck is his seventh in 39 matches. It is also his longest duck (in terms of balls faced) and the third-longest by a West Indies batsman against New Zealand.

Kane Williamson, the stand-in New Zealand captain, and Watling somehow managed to survive Narine’s opening spell of 5-1-4-1. Just when New Zealand seemed to have begun some sort of recovery, Williamson, on 24, guided Darren Sammy’s fourth ball into the hands of the keeper to leave the visitors struggling to survive the full 50 overs.Watling, though he never looked completely in control, settled down to nudge and whip on the leg side, 50 of his 60 runs coming on that half of the ground. He added 46 with Jacob Oram and 44 with Andrew Ellis and survived two leg-before referrals, against Narine when on 26 and against Russell on 40.But the boost that could have taken New Zealand towards a fighting total never arrived. Jacob Oram, the only New Zealand batsman who looked threatening, got out in the second over of the batting Powerplay, looking for more runs after swinging a couple of sixes. Just 26 runs came off the Powerplay ultimately, and it ended with Ellis playing out a maiden to Narine, who later bowled Ellis to finish with 2 for 26.Watling continued to accumulate as New Zealand scraped 57 off the last ten overs, but as if succumbing to Russell and co. was not enough, New Zealand had Gayle and Smith to contend with. To round off their woes, Ellis could not bowl after picking up a leg injury while batting. In his first international match at his home ground since June 2009, Gayle began like he often has recently, with a maiden to Tim Southee. He soon started to swing boundaries down the ground freely. Southee and Oram were lifted nonchalantly for straight sixes; the spinners Tarun Nethula and Nicol met a similar fate. Smith, who largely struggled for timing, clobbered a few sixes over his favoured leg side, and also benefited from loose deliveries on the pads. With West Indies having knocked off nearly half of the original target in 18 overs, the expected rain arrived. Had there been a washout, the game would have ended without a result as West Indies’ innings had been halted two overs short of the 20 needed for the Duckworth-Lewis method to be applied. However, play eventually resumed with an hour to go for the cut-off time of 6 pm, leaving West Indies another 43 to get in 90 deliveries. Gayle and Smith eased to victory in fading light; New Zealand’s chances had faded long back.

Trego fires to trump Cooke ton

Peter Trego’s blistering 81 off 43 balls set Somerset on course for a three-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 victory over Glamorgan

28-Jul-2012
ScorecardPeter Trego’s blistering 81 off 43 balls set Somerset on course for a three-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 victory over Glamorgan. The hosts chased down a target of 251 with 13 balls to spare, Trego dominating an opening stand of 92 with Marcus Trescothick, who contributed only 14. Nick Compton hit 53, while Dean Cosker took 2 for 37.Chris Cooke’s superb 137 not out, including four sixes and 11 fours, had inspired the visitors to a challenging 250 for 9. But the 26-year-old South African lacked support, with only Stewart Walters contributing to a significant partnership.Trego claimed 3 for 45 before his explosive batting, while Steve Kirby picked up 3 for 43 as the home seamers varied their pace cleverly.Cooke totally dominated Glamorgan’s innings, giving just one chance on 108 when Alfonso Thomas dropped a return catch. Even at that late stage it proved an expensive miss as the batsman went on to add 29 to his score as 49 came off the last five overs.Only Walters gave Cooke much support, the pair adding 75 for the fourth wicket in good time before Walters became the third Glamorgan batsman to perish to a leading edge, caught at cover off Thomas. With wickets falling regularly at the other end, Cooke had to rein himself back, but he still cleared the ropes four times, including a glorious strike over midwicket off Thomas in the final over, in reaching his first ton for the Dragons.Somerset had two of their players taken to hospital during the Glamorgan innings. Craig Meschede damaged a finger, while substitute fielder Alex Barrow was briefly knocked out when crashing head first into an advertising board when trying to prevent a boundary, but recovered in the treatment room. The hosts’ fielding was below par with a number of fumbles. But there was nothing indecisive about their batting as Trego went ballistic after being dropped by Simon Jones off his own bowling at the start of the second over. The powerful batsman needed only 26 balls to reach a half century, with 11 fours, and immediately celebrated with a straight six off Cosker. He looked on course for a remarkable ton before pulling a ball from Cosker straight to Jim Allenby at midwicket. After James Hildreth fell cheaply, Jos Buttler helped Compton ease Somerset towards their target before Lewis Gregory’s 39 kept them ahead of the required rate. Meschede had to bat at the end, despite his injured finger, which didn’t stop him hitting a straight six off Allenby, before Thomas sealed victory with a boundary off the same bowler.

No próximo domingo, encara o Vitória no Barradão.
