Dreams of beating big teams now a reality – Mashrafe

Amid the roaring support of a full house that had braved an evening thunderstorm in Chittagong, Bangladesh’s ODI captain Mashrafe Mortaza lifted the trophy his team had wrested from South Africa. He then flashed the victory sign and posed for photos before leaving for the press conference, where he said: “We used to dream of beating big teams. Now we are beating them.””After some time we will realise that as a professional team we should all have our feet on the ground,” Mashrafe said of Bangladesh’s recent success. “We should maintain discipline because there will be a lot of tough challenges coming up. I knew that if we have a good World Cup, we will be set up for the rest of the year. That’s what has happened. We have four Tests coming up and I will hope these series win will help us.”Mashrafe was asked at the presentation ceremony whether he would request that the Prime Minister grant an extra day of Eid holiday to mark his team’s achievement. He had to be asked again, before he sheepishly agreed he would. He said the Bangladesh team do celebrate much apart from a rendition of their team song, , the Bengali version of , immediately after the victory. They retire to their rooms quickly. The festivities may not be excessive but that will not take away from the magnitude of Bangladesh’s crowning achievement in Chittagong. On the back of 3-0 and 5-0 wins over Zimbabwe, Bangladesh reached the quarter-final of the 2015 World Cup, a tournament in which Associates were touted to challenge them. Then they crushed Pakistan 3-0 and a full-strength India 2-1 at home. Now they have beaten South Africa, a team that in the last 13 years has defeated Bangladesh by margins 206, 168 and 128 runs, and twice by ten wickets.”It is special,” Mashrafe said. “I said previously that when a team starts losing a few matches, there’s talk from outside and the team goes under pressure. Many of my team-mates are young. It was important to see how they can turn around. I think it is a sign of a good team how we have made a comeback. Credit goes to the boys and team management.Mashrafe did not want to compare the series wins against Pakistan, India and South Africa, but he said it was a show of Bangladesh’s character that they came back from 0-1 down to beat South Africa.”Beating a big side is different than beating weaker teams. It’s always important to hold on to the momentum. We have done so since the World Cup, through the Pakistan and India series. We made a brilliant comeback against South Africa after three losses. It was much needed. It shows character.”Mashrafe conceded the absence of AB de Villiers had been a factor but he had expected Hashim Amla and David Miller to put pressure on Bangladesh. “Not having AB de Villiers would have been good for any team, even Australia,” he said. “They wouldn’t have needed just AB de Villiers to beat us. They have Hashim Amla who averages 54, they have Killer Miller and other such things they have. People don’t mention our players in the same way.”Mahmudullah, who made 50 in the pivotal win in the second ODI, contributed with a wicket with his first ball in the third. He was happy to have made a comeback after being out of the team for more than a month with a finger injury. “This is obviously one of our greatest wins,” he said. “To win like this after going a game down in the opener, hats off to our team. Personally for me, too, this has been great. To comeback from an injury and to be able to perform, it feels really good.”Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha, a key factor in the team’s turnaround since last October, emphasised he was extremely happy. “I think you can see how happy I am just by looking at me. I am very, very, very happy. This is definitely a great win. Not just this series, all of them … against India, Pakistan, all of them are great wins. I won’t compare one win to the other, I have enjoyed all of them thoroughly.”Opener Tamim Iqbal made an unbeaten 61 off 77 balls in the third ODI – only the third time he had remained not out in a Bangladesh chase. “It definitely feels really good,” Tamim said. “I don’t think you have to ask me regarding how I rate this series win. I think the entire atmosphere says it all. It feels really good.”

Australia won't tone down aggression

Australia’s vice-captain David Warner is adamant the new No. 1 Test team will not divert from the hard-edged playing style intrinsic to the game down under

Five talking points from the Christchurch Test

Australia’s vice-captain David Warner is adamant the new No. 1 Test team will not divert from the hard-edged playing style intrinsic to the game down under, though he concedes that with better understanding of the DRS the ugly scenes glimpsed in Christchurch may not have happened at all.The captain Steven Smith and the fast bowler Josh Hazlewood were both fined for an incident where they aggressively questioned a third umpire decision in favour of Kane Williamson on the penultimate day of the series. While Warner did not wish to see Australia’s players retreat into their shells, he admitted the anger could be tracked back to the fact they did not realise how the DRS worked in that moment.Warner also added his opinion that the stump microphones, not meant to be turned on when the ball is dead, had exacerbated the situation. He said an explanation had been sought from the local broadcasters, with “human error” described as the reason for Hazlewood’s words being picked up.”In Steve’s case where they used the [HotSpot] but didn’t use the Snicko that’s where he was arguing the point why they didn’t use it,” Warner said on his return home to Sydney. “But with conclusive evidence for the third umpire saying he hit it, he didn’t need to use it.”When you’re on the field that’s not communicated to you, so that’s why he might have stepped across the line a little bit, and he didn’t know that until he came off the field. If he had his time again and he knew that he wouldn’t have debated that with the umpire.”There has been a bit of talk about the team and the aggressive brand of cricket that we play. Steve spoke about not trying to cross that line. Stump mics were turned up and they said it was so-called ‘human error’ which was convenient at the time.”Criticism of Australia’s aggression has seemed to arrive as if on cue with every major achievement by the team in recent times. There was the “broken f***ing arm” incident at the Gabba during the 2013-14 Ashes series, various hot-tempered scenes in South Africa the following year, and some much decried behaviour during and after the 2015 World Cup final. However the pattern of success means that there is little desire within the Australian side to retreat entirely from a style of play that attempts to make life uncomfortable for opponents with words and body language as well as bat and ball. Warner noted how the likes of Mitchell Johnson had felt increasingly inhibited by match officials about expressing themselves on the field.”We’re about playing the game in the right spirit, but we’ve got a passionate brand where if you look back at the history of Australian cricket we play an aggressive style,” Warner said. “A couple of the fast bowlers who’ve recently retired have stated that you are taking the aggression out for the bowlers a bit.”Back in the day you used to see these battles with the fast bowlers, the batter would play and miss and the bowler would say something. These days it’s taken the spark out of it a little bit – I love getting into a contest with the bowler, if he gets you out he gets the last laugh, but if you get on top of him then you can. But in the end it’s what the ICC has put in place and we need to respect that.”Ironically given New Zealand’s adoption of a higher road under the captaincy of Brendon McCullum, crowds across the Tasman subjected many of Australia’s players to repeated personal abuse. Warner said several times spectators were asked to leave for expressing sentiments he described as “vulgar”.”Doesn’t matter whether you’re home or away, you’re going to cop some form of abuse, but we don’t expect to wake up and be hounded for six or seven hours,” he said. “Some of the stuff was pretty derogatory and vulgar … the upsetting thing was the fact that if my two daughters were in the crowd I wouldn’t want them listening to that kind of stuff.”It’s irrelevant what they said, but just disappointing that was happening every game. A couple of bowlers were down on the boundary, you get your odd banter here and there but when they’re talking about people’s families and stuff it takes it a bit too far. Some of the boys raised the issue, not to express it to anyone, more just to say ‘can you get rid of this bloke’ because it’s just not necessary.”Warner himself played only a peripheral role in the series, making few runs with the bat and keeping himself out of trouble in the field. Asked why he has changed his behaviour, the response may be one for the ICC to keep in mind. “For me it was a 12-month probation,” he said. “That made me keep my mouth shut a little bit.”

Flu inicia preparação para jogo contra CSA. Caio Henrique volta

Refreshed Root believes best is yet to come

On the eve of a critical contest that will make or break England’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the World T20, Joe Root has said that the side are yet to play their best cricket in the tournament

Andrew Miller in Delhi25-Mar-2016On the eve of a critical contest that will make or break England’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the World T20, Joe Root took a momentary break from the high-octane, foot-to-the-floor attitude that has propelled his team’s campaign, and opted, along with a handful of his team-mates, to take the slow road to Agra for a visit to the Taj Mahal. The three-hour journey time was more or less the same as it will take for England and Sri Lanka to face off in Delhi on Saturday, by which time the showdown between West Indies and South Africa will have given both teams a clearer idea of what exactly they need to reach the semi-finals.However, after the frantic, error-strewn batting display that so nearly wrecked England’s tournament against Afghanistan, a day of quiet contemplation in the passenger seat was doubtless time well spent – especially for a batsman such as Root, whose calm under fire was the defining feature of England’s most outstanding effort in the competition so far.”With the schedule being so busy, having the opportunity to do something like that, being only three hours away in a car, it was a no-brainer for me,” Root said. “Getting to experience a bit of India and obviously one of the wonders of the world, so it was a really enjoyable day and something I’m really glad I did.”With two wins out of three in the tournament so far, England remain firmly on the road to the knockouts, albeit with their souped-up auto-rickshaw skidding uncomfortably through one or two of the tighter bends along the way.The contrast in demeanour between England’s serene pursuit of 230 against South Africa and their near-catastrophic loss of six wickets in the space of ten overs against Afghanistan was particularly stark, and Root admitted that a degree of expertise was still lacking in their approach to each game.”We’ve obviously not performed at our best through the whole competition yet, which, in a way, is quite exciting because that is still to come,” he said. “The really pleasing thing for me is we are winning games of cricket, which is really important in this format of the game, so as long as we continue to do that, that is all we can worry about, getting that win tomorrow to give us the best chance of qualifying.”Sri Lanka haven’t exactly brought their A game to the competition either. They too were walloped by West Indies and run close by Afghanistan, but at the Feroz Shah Kotla, where Afghanistan fielded four spinners against England and so nearly reaped their rewards, the likelihood is that England will need to repel a similar line of attack with a much greater degree of expertise. A team with the experience of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews, to name but two, will be primed to strike if England dare to falter again.Jos Buttler, David Willey, Joe Root and Liam Plunkett took time out to visit the Taj Mahal•Getty Images

“It’s about adapting to conditions a bit better than we did in the previous game,” Root said. “We obviously didn’t do that very well – and not having too many preconceived ideas. We saw how the pitch played there, it might be slightly different again, so when we get out there it is about making sure that we make those assessments and are very clear on how we approach the 20 overs.”What constitutes clarity in the current England approach, however? Eoin Morgan, their captain, was adamant to the point of obstinacy on Wednesday afternoon, defending his team’s “no-fear” attitude against Afghanistan, despite the lemming-like end-game that such an approach can invite.”Everyone has their own way of playing it, there’s no right or wrong way,” Root said. “But for me it is about trying to face as few dot-balls as possible and trying to cash in with the boundaries when they are available.”You never want to lose wickets but you always have to look to put a score on the board,” he added. “That is what we tried to do and, obviously, our approach might have been slightly wrong in the last game and that is something we want to put right leading in to tomorrow.”Every surface is different so it is about giving yourself the best chance on that particular pitch. Sometimes you might need to take a few extra balls to get accustomed to it but ultimately it is about playing the situation in front of you, reading the pitch and score if you are chasing and making sure you are working with your partner to whittle that down and take the game away from the opposition.”It sounds simple when expressed with the sort of quiet authority that Root has brought to his England performances in all three formats this year. However, his crass run-out against Afghanistan denied him the chance to apply similar wisdom to Wednesday’s erratic game plan, and he couldn’t deny that the errors have continued to stack up for his team.”If we’re being honest we probably haven’t done one part of our game consistently well,” he said. “There have been times when we’ve bowled extremely well and times when we’ve obviously batted extremely well. The exciting thing for me is that if that comes together and we can consistently do that, we’ll be a hard team to beat.”In the meantime, England will settle back to watch how their qualification rivals fare in Nagpur, then hope that prior knowledge of the Delhi pitch can work in their favour, just as they came good at the second time of asking at the Wankhede last week.”There’s always pressure to perform, we know it’s a must-win game but it’s been like that since we got here,” Root said. “You can only really afford to lose one game and even then you can crash out of the competition.”It’s T20, it’s a complete knockout from here on in if we want to win it. The pressure is no more than it has been since that second game, it’s about getting over the line tomorrow.”

Unsettled Supergiants run into confident Mumbai

With just two wins so far, and seven matches remaining, Rising Pune Supergiants will look to arrest their slide when they take on Mumbai Indians, and try to ensure they remain in contention for a playoff spot

The Preview by Nagraj Gollapudi30-Apr-2016Match factsSunday, May 1, 2016
Start time 2000 local (1430 GMT)Big PictureRising Pune Supergiants announced themselves on the opening day of IPL 2016 with a nine-wicket win over defending champions Mumbai Indians, achieved with 32 balls to spare. In terms of balls left, the margin of victory is the third-best in the tournament so far and second in terms of wickets left. Since then, however, MS Dhoni’s Supergiants have had only one victory in six matches. After failing to defend 195 against Gujarat Lions, Dhoni made it clear that if Supergiants had to stay alive in the campaign his bowlers needed to create more impact, especially in the Powerplay. However, in the Powerplay, his bowlers have taken 10 wickets in seven matches, second only to Kolkata Knight Riders, who have 14 in as many matches. Even in the middle overs (7 to 15), Supergiants have maintained an economy rate of 6.71, the best among the eight teams. Why Supergiants have NRR edge despite poor run

In seven matches this season, Rising Pune Supergiants have won two matches and lost five; in the same number of matches, Gujarat Lions have won six and lost one. Supergiants’ net run rate after seven matches is +0.265, while Lions’ is +0.038.
At first glance it would seem the NRR numbers have been interchanged, but Supergiants have won their two matches so convincingly, and lost a few so narrowly, that their NRR is second to Kolkata Knight Riders’. Their two wins were by margins of 32 balls to spare and 34 runs, which is huge in the 20-over format. The 34-run win was even bigger as it came in a rain-affected game in which Supergiants batted only 11 overs – effectively scoring three runs per over more than their opponents, Sunrisers Hyderabad. On the other hand, the sum of balls remaining in their four defeats when defending a total is only 23, while their only defeat in a chase was by a 13-run margin.
Lions, meanwhile, have won every close game they have been involved in: two of their chases culminated in last-ball wins, while they beat Daredevils by one run. The aggregate of balls remaining in their three other wins is 29, while their only defeat was a massive one – by ten wickets, with 31 balls remaining, against Sunrisers. The margin of that defeat has very nearly wiped out the margins of their six wins put together, which is why their NRR is almost zero.

Their problem appears to be lack of confidence. Dhoni’s usual go-to man R Ashwin has failed to take wickets. After taking 2 for 36 in the opening game, Ishant Sharma leaked runs and took one wicket in the subsequent three matches before he was benched. Losing batsmen Kevin Pietersen and Faf du Plessis to injuries hasn’t helped their cause and they suffered another setback when Australia allrounder Mitchell Marsh was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a side strain.* Marsh was one of the more economical bowlers for the side, taking four wickets in three matches at an average of 11.25 and an economy rate of 5.Dhoni and the coach Stephen Fleming have been critical of their players in public, an uncharacteristic situation for them. Their impatience, however, could also stem from the fact that the team have only seven matches remaining and the pressure to win could prove an unnecessary distraction.Mumbai, have played the most matches so far in the tournament (8) and are placed fifth on the points table. After a few hiccoughs, they seem to have found balance in their line-up. In the first few games, their batting relied heavily on the success of their captain Rohit Sharma but Parthiv Patel, Ambati Rayudu, Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard have also stepped up subsequently.Simply put, this is a contest between a team low on confidence against a team gaining confidence with every game.Form guideRising Pune Supergiants LWLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Mumbai Indians WWLWLIn the SpotlightR Ashwin is undoubtedly a match-winner but has not yet made an impact in IPL 2016. There has been much debate on whether he has been under-bowled. With an average of 77 and two wickets in seven matches, Ashwin must be hurting and desperate to turn the corner.Team NewsMarsh’s injury may mean the team could stick with Albie Morkel. The franchise has not yet confirmed whether Australia batsman Usman Khawaja, who was signed earlier this week, has joined the squad.Rising Pune Supergiants (probable) 1 Ajinkya Rahane, 2 Saurabh Tiwary, 3 Steven Smith, 4 MS Dhoni (wk/capt), 5 Thisara Perera, 6 Peter Handscomb, 7 Rajat Bhatia, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Albie Morkel, 10 Ashok Dinda, 11 M AshwinMumbai might opt for the same eleven that beat Kolkata Knight Riders in their previous match.Mumbai Indians (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 Ambati Rayudu, 4 Jos Buttler, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Krunal Pandya, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Mitchell McCleneghan, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Jasprit BumrahPitch and conditionsThe Pune pitch was in the news earlier in the year when India were bundled out for 101 in a T20I against Sri Lanka on a green track. The match was played in winter and the ball was swinging, aided by stiff breeze. In this IPL, teams have set targets of 186, 161 and 196 at the ground. A big score can be expected once again, although the pitch could be on the slower side owing to the scorching summer temperatures.Stats and TriviaM Ashwin was picked by Supergiants at the auction for INR 4.5 crore (approx $671,000). So far the legspinner has not disappointed his captain Dhoni, who has thrown the ball to him in the end overs. With an economy of just 6.16 in the slog overs, M Ashwin ranks as one of the best among bowlers who have delivered a minimum of four overs. Rohit Sharma has scored 279 runs while chasing in four matches so far this season, but has made only 19 runs in the four instances when Mumbai have batted first.Quotes”It won’t work if we concede 60 runs or so in the first six overs. We definitely need to improve our bowling, especially with the new ball. Our bowlers need to step up. Simple.”*1051 AM GMT, May 1. The preview was updated to include news of Mitchell Marsh’s injury

A primeira, obviamente, é do técnico Jorge Sampaoli elétrico dirigindo a equipe santista.

A saída quase certa é a do zagueiro Gustavo Henrique.
