Rodgers says "excellent" under the radar Celtic star is impressing in training

Celtic were in action against Hibernian on Saturday, and one star caught the eye more than most for Brendan Rodgers on an occasion that ultimately ended in frustration.

Celtic have to settle for a point against Hibernian

Despite their best efforts, Celtic had to settle for a point at home to Hibernian on Saturday in a goalless draw mired by frustration due to their lack of potency in the final third.

Statistically, the Scottish Premiership holders racked up 26 shots and an Expected Goals tally of 3.00, per Fotmob. Nevertheless, some excellent stops from Raphael Sallinger and a host of missed chances meant a share of the spoils at Parkhead.

Opting not to criticise his players too much after a day where luck wasn’t on their side, Rodgers praised Celtic for their ‘dominant’ performance, also offering credit to Hibernian for their robust display. He stated via BBC Sport:

“I was happy with the performance. I think every metric in the game, we were dominant. I thought today our football was really good, we went through the pitch well but we just lacked that killer instinct in the box. But I also think they defended the box really well so we need to credit Hibs for that.”

Kelechi Iheanacho couldn’t convert his chances against Hibernian despite being heavily involved in attacking moves, while Arne Engels and Luke McCowan didn’t do enough to convince supporters they are worthy of a regular place in the engine room after rare starts.

Perspective is needed in light of the Hoops’ opportunity creation, but they are now two points behind Heart of Midlothian in the league standings as they now focus on facing Braga in the Europa League next Thursday.

Regardless, one Celtic performer did take his chance against Hibernian, earning praise from the manager after an impactful display on an otherwise forgettable afternoon.

Brendan Rodgers delighted with Celtic left-back Marcelo Saracchi

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Rodgers made his appreciation known for loanee Marcelo Saracchi after his ‘excellent’ performance against Hibernian.

Detailing his consistency in training, he stated via The Daily Record: “Marcelo was excellent with his attitude to the game and his confidence. He’s an experienced player having played at a high level.

“Working with so many South American players, it’s an obligation, they’re not timid, they’re aggressive and strong and very committed and when we have the ball, he wants to play forward and come into those nice spaces.

“He’s made a really good impact coming into training. That attitude I like. You need that personality at a club like this. Some can be overawed, and you have to be patient, but he was excellent.”

Ultimately, Saracchi was a shining light for Celtic and proved his worth as an able deputy to Kieran Tierney, who is still working to reach full fitness after his summer move from Arsenal.

The Uruguay international has made an impressive start to life at the club and supporters will be excited to see more of the left-back in weeks to come.

Barcelona decide against Camp Nou return despite being given green light by city council following repeated delays

Barcelona have been granted permission to reopen the Camp Nou to 27,000 fans after the city council approved the stadium’s first occupancy phase. However, the club have chosen to remain at Montjuic for now, prioritising financial stability and waiting for a larger capacity clearance before making their long-awaited return home.

City approval granted but Barcelona choose to wait

According to , Barcelona have officially received the green light to return to the Camp Nou after months of delays, with the city council approving the Phase 1A occupancy permit that allows 27,000 spectators inside the renovated stadium. Despite this, the club have opted to stay at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic until they are permitted to host a larger crowd under Phase 1B.

The decision, according to club sources, comes down to finances. The Montjuic venue, though temporary, currently offers higher matchday revenue potential due to its larger capacity. Returning to a partially open Camp Nou, they believe, would not make economic sense until the 47,000-seat approval is secured. Phase 1A includes the opening of the grandstand and the south end of the first ring, while Phase 1B, which Barcelona hope will be approved soon would reopen the side stands. The latter is also necessary for UEFA approval to host Champions League matches, meaning Barca’s homecoming will have to wait a little longer.

AdvertisementAFPWhy Barcelona are holding off their Camp Nou return

Vice president Elena Fort, who oversees the Espai Barca project, shed light on the club’s reasoning during an interview with : "We hope that phase 1B, which would accommodate 47,000 spectators, will be approved soon, because the works are finished and it's a matter of permits and project validation, and it's simpler than the approved phase."

Fort went on to say that while there is no fixed date yet, the club’s 126th anniversary could be an ideal occasion for their grand return: "Any date would be good, because what we want is to return, but the end of November, whether it's against Athletic or Getafe, which would coincide with the club's 126th anniversary, would be a great match."

She concluded: “The return will allow the club to recover on an emotional, pride, and financial level.”

Behind the scenes: construction controversies and internal setbacks

While excitement builds around the reopening, the Espai Barca project has not been without controversy. The club’s €960 million (£832m/$1.12bn) Camp Nou renovation contract was awarded to Turkish firm Limak despite the company receiving the lowest score in a technical evaluation conducted by the club’s own experts. Limak’s proposal reportedly scored below 50 out of 100, behind rivals Ferrovial and FCC with concerns raised about their construction timeline and initial financing requirements. The Turkish firm demanded roughly €200 million upfront compared to just €12 million from competitors.

The revelations sparked questions about transparency and decision-making within Barcelona’s board, especially as financial pressures continue to mount. However, club officials insist the project remains on schedule and that the decision was made to meet UEFA and local government deadlines.

Getty Images SportInjuries, scheduling and the road ahead for Hansi Flick’s side

Amid the uncertainty off the pitch, Hansi Flick’s squad are battling their own challenges. The German coach has been hit by a series of injuries in recent weeks, with key players such as Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres and goalkeeper Joan Garcia all sidelined. With the international break over, Barcelona will resume domestic action this weekend as they look to bounce back from disappointing displays against Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla. They face Girona next in La Liga before returning to European competition against Olympiacos in the Champions League.

The biggest test, however, looms at the end of the month, the first El Clasico of the season against Real Madrid on October 26. That fixture could prove decisive in shaping up their title challenge. For now, though, the Catalan giants will continue to call Montjuic home. Their symbolic return to Camp Nou, once seen as a beacon of renewal remains just out of reach. But with the stadium nearing completion and permits pending, fans may not have to wait much longer to walk through those famous gates once again.

West Ham star tipped to re-join former club after brutal Nuno Espirito Santo decision

West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo’s arrival is already beginning to spark a plethora of rumours, with his new squad expected to be reshaped over these coming months.

Nuno Espírito Santo given full West Ham backing with Arsenal next

Premier League title-chasing Arsenal await West Ham next after Nuno oversaw a 1-1 draw against Everton on Merseyside.

The Portuguese saw glimpses of the defensive frailties which have cost West Ham time and time again this season, with Konstantinos Mavropanos leaving Michael Keane in acres for Everton’s opening goal at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Having conceded more goals than any other side in the Premier League so far, with seven of them coming directly from corners, Nuno knows exactly what he has to fix if the Hammers stand any chance of pushing themselves away from the relegation zone.

Unfortunately for them, Arsenal’s well-documented major threat from set pieces since the beginning of last season is a real worry for Nuno’s side, and becoming more robust at dealing with dead balls will undoubtedly be key in thwarting Mikel Arteta’s side.

On a more positive note, Nuno’s pragmatic style not only solidified Nottingham Forest’s own defensive weaknesses, but also catapulted them up the table and back into Europe for the first time since the 1990s.

If it wasn’t for a public fallout with Evangelos Marinakis, Nuno would still be at the City Ground right now, so it is clear as day why Karren Brady pushed West Ham to appoint Nuno and convinced the board to hand him a long-term three-year deal, according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook.

According to recent reports, West Ham are already planning to back Nuno with signings in January, so the Hammers appear to be fully convinced that Nuno is the right man to step into Graham Potter’s shoes.

The former Tottenham and Wolves boss has already stamped his authority on the team by dropping previously key players — omitting midfielder James Ward-Prowse from the Everton matchday squad in what was a bold move.

Since the 30-year-old’s axe, it has been reported that Ward-Prowse has been told he can leave West Ham in January.

James Ward-Prowse tipped to leave West Ham and re-join Southampton

Journalist Dean Jones, speaking to TEAMtalk, has shared an update on the Englishman’s future.

The reporter claims that Ward-Prowse is indeed resigned to leaving West Ham early next year, and he could even re-join former club Southampton.

Ward-Prowse had been a starter for Potter, but under Nuno, history is repeating itself, as the 51-year-old also cut short his Forest loan spell when he briefly spent time there last season.

Signed largely for his threat from set-pieces by David Moyes, Ward-Prowse is apparently just one free-kick goal off equalling David Beckham’s Premier League record of 18, but it is unlikely he’ll get to achieve that landmark in Claret and Blue.

Pundit Alan Shearer praised the “world-class” Ward-Prowse for his form immediately after arriving at West Ham, but things can change very quickly in football.

Agent Bryan Mbeumo! Man Utd forward tells 'little brother' Carlos Baleba to join him at Old Trafford following Cameroon link-up

Manchester United may have a secret agent on their hands in Bryan Mbeumo, with the Red Devils winger said to be urging Cameroon international team-mate Carlos Baleba to join him at Old Trafford. United remain in the market for another proven performer to operate in the heart of their midfield, with a big-money raid on Premier League rivals Brighton being mooted.

  • Agent Mbeumo talking Baleba into Man Utd move

United considered making that move during the summer window, but were unable to finance another deal on the back of snapping up Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. Ruben Amorim was given £200 million ($269m), with the Red Devils still waiting on that investment to deliver a return.

Further recruitment plans are already being drawn up, with Baleba continuing to register on their radar. reports on how Mbeumo could be a useful tool in ongoing efforts to prise Baleba away from Brighton.

When a big-money transfer could happen

Mbeumo and Baleba are said to have "become closer while on international duty during Cameroon’s African World Cup qualifying campaign". goes on to claim that: "Inside sources say Mbeumo has been sharing the delights of joining a mammoth club like United and is like a ‘big brother’ to 21-year-old Baleba."

Mbeumo’s advice could be heeded, with the United winger said to have been "trying to encourage Baleba to push for a move in the January window, although any transfer would most likely take place next summer."

The Red Devils may struggle to get a deal done in the New Year as Brighton are understandably reluctant to part with another prized asset midway through the 2025-26 campaign. They have already seen Yves Bissouma and Moises Caicedo lured away from the south coast by domestic rivals.

  • Baleba price tag: Brighton will demand £100m

Big-money agreements were struck there with Tottenham and Chelsea respectively, with Baleba seemingly next off the production line. He will come with a price tag similar to that of former Seagull Caicedo, with it claimed that Brighton will be demanding £100m ($135m) from any sale.

United may see that as a shrewd investment in their long-term future, with Baleba seemingly the perfect foil for Bruno Fernandes in Amorim’s favoured 3-4-3 system. The Red Devils must decide how best to splash any cash that is made available by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS group.

Transfer plans: Romano update on Baleba talks

Fabrizio Romano expects more discussions to be held on the Baleba front, with United not about to shelve their interest. They may have to wait until the end of the season to get a deal done, but Mbeumo’s efforts could help to deliver a much sought-after signature.

Transfer guru Romano has told his channel: "Carlos Baleba was a target for Manchester United. There were very positive exchanges between Baleba, his agent and Manchester United. He wanted the move, but he didn't want to force the move. He respected Brighton, he didn't ask to go, so it was in Brighton's hands.

“"t the moment, Brighton insist on their position not to sell the player in the January transfer window. For that to happen, it would have to be a crazy proposal or if the player asked to go. Even in that case, they don't want to sell him. It is going to be difficult.

"In the summer, it might be different. Amorim pushed a lot for Baleba in the summer transfer window, he saw him as a perfect target for Man United, in terms of intensity, skills, potential and knowledge of the Premier League. He was considered a perfect signing by people at the club and by the manager. It remains a difficult deal for January, for the summer we will see what will happen. Manchester United are looking for an important midfielder in 2026."

United, who have Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte to fill a holding role in their side at present, will be back in Premier League action on Sunday when taking in a trip to old adversaries Liverpool.

Boland: 'I just want to make their decision as hard as possible'

Scott Boland says he is pain free for the first time in 18 months and is aiming to cause Australia’s selectors headaches as he vies for a spot in the World Test Championship final next week, ahead of Josh Hazlewood.Boland, 36, is fighting for a spot in the WTC final XI despite being Player of the Match in the last Test he played in Sydney against India in January. He was not selected in Sri Lanka when Australia fielded just one quick and three spinners in each of the two Tests and has not played any cricket since Victoria’s second-last Sheffield Shield fixture of Australia’s domestic season in early March after battling ongoing knee soreness.Boland had a huge impact (21 wickets at an average of 13) in Border-Gavaskar series in the three Tests he played in place of the injured Hazlewood. He was also Australia’s best quick in the 2023 WTC final when he was selected ahead of Hazlewood. But he knows he is no guarantee to play at Lord’s against South Africa as Hazlewood is fully fit again having bowled superbly throughout the IPL (22 wickets at an average of 18) to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru claim a maiden title.Related

  • Hazlewood's successful return likely to leave Boland unlucky for WTC final

Boland said the three months off have been vital to help him get his knee right after playing through soreness over the previous year-and-a-half and he is hoping to make the selectors job as difficult as possible.”I’m really happy with how my body’s feeling at the moment,” Boland said. “Pain free for probably the first time in about 18 months. So it’s feeling really good.”My goal for probably the last two months was just get myself and my body in the position where I can put my hand up and be ready to go if it goes my way. I probably felt like at the back end of the Shield season, my knee was sort of, not wearing away, but wasn’t going how I wanted to go. And I didn’t feel like I was bowling how I wanted. But now I feel like I’m in a really good spot that I can bowl how I want to bowl. It’s pulling up really well, so that’s all I can do, and I just want to make their decision as hard as possible.”The decision between Boland and Hazlewood is one of a few that Australia’s selectors are mulling over, alongside whether to pick a specialist allrounder, where to bat Cameron Green on return from injury as a batter-only and who will open alongside Usman Khawaja given Travis Head will move back to No. 5 after opening in Australia’s last two Tests in Sri Lanka. The decision between Boland and Hazlewood sits independent of the batting order. However, Boland’s chances would increase if the selectors elect not play an allrounder in Beau Webster given concerns over Hazlewood’s durability after breaking down in each of his last two Tests.”I felt like I had a couple of really strong games,” Boland said. “But Josh is obviously a world-class bowler. He’s one of the best bowlers in the world coming off a really good IPL. So I’m sure he’ll be wanting the same thing here. Obviously, we all want to play but there’s probably not room for all of us.”Scott Boland has not played since the end of the Sheffield Shield season in March•Getty Images

Boland being completely pain free will only increase his chances given how reliable and robust he has been in Tests for Australia despite his ongoing knee issues. He said he did not bowl or run for a period of six weeks after the domestic season finished and worked exclusively on strengthening his knee in the gym.”I was able to get it to a spot where it’s really strong, and then it’s just gotten better and better since I’ve started running and bowling, which was seven weeks ago,” he said. The only concern for Boland is that he is not as match-hardened compared to Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. The latter three have all been playing in the IPL and although they have only been bowling four overs per game, bowling at high intensity in games regularly over a two-moth stretch has value for the experienced quicks.Australia opted not play a long-form practice match leading into the WTC final and have instead chosen to do seven days of nets and centre-wicket practice in Beckenham, south of London, as they did before the 2023 WTC final. Boland said his lack of match practice is not a concern.”I think we’re really comfortable with the way that we do it now,” Boland said. “I don’t think we’ve played a practice game since I’ve been in the team. We haven’t had a scheduled tour game. So I think you can get as much out of training if you have the right conditions. And I think the set-up we’ve got at Beckenham is perfect. There’s a really nice centre-wicket, beautiful run ups, all that kind of stuff. So it’s as close you can get to a game without playing a game.”For me personally, I like that the best. You can just get what you need to get done. And then all the other guys have been playing IPL, the other three bowlers, so they’re ready to go. They’re match hardened. And I think the intensity of the IPL helps when you go from format to format. They’ve already been at 100%. The only step up for them is just bowling a few more overs which they’re definitely used to.”One factor not in Boland’s favour is that he has never played at Lord’s. He was not selected for the Lord’s Test during the 2023 Ashes series. Hazlewood has 13 wickets at 26.15 in three Tests at the ground including five crucial scalps across two innings to help Australia win the 2023 Lord’s Test against England.

Also picking up €13.2m per season is full-back Achraf Hakimi. The Morocco international had already represented Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Inter before signing for PSG in 2021.

PSG legend Marquinhos has been on the books with the Ligue 1 champions since 2013 and has won 10 league titles since joining from Roma.

In fact, the captain has won more than 30 major honours with PSG and signed his latest contract in 2023, which keeps the centre-back at the club until 2028.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was PSG’s marquee signing in January 2025, with the club paying Napoli €70 million plus add-ons to sign the winger.

Manager "close to agreeing" West Ham contract after Sullivan and Brady talks

West Ham are making serious contingency plans in the event they sack under-fire boss Graham Potter, which is looking like a serious possibility after the Hammers lost their fourth Premier League game of the season last Saturday.

Potter watched on from the sidelines as West Ham tasted yet another home defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace, with Tyrick Mitchell’s sumptuous right-footed volley from inside the area putting even more pressure on the tactician.

After their 2-1 loss to Palace, Potter’s win percentage has dropped even further to a lowly 26.1 per cent, and only Avram Grant has recorded a worse number than the Englishman out of every Irons boss in Premier League history.

Grant’s West Ham were relegated in 2011, and you can make a case that Potter is in danger of suffering the same fate if results continue in this manner.

West Ham face Everton next, and it would be quite the irony if ex-boss David Moyes — who guided the club through their most successful period in decades before departing the London Stadium — was the man to help seal Potter’s fate.

Of the tacticians who could step into Potter’s shoes, many have been linked.

Slaven Bilic is reportedly admired by David Sullivan, according to Ben Jacobs, whilst it is believed that another former West Ham player, Gary O’Neil, is another favourite to take over from Potter (Miguel Delaney).

However, there is one man who looks like the standout candidate by far.

Nuno Espirito Santo guided Nottingham Forest back to Europe for the first time since 1995 last season, only for a public fallout with owner Evangelos Marinakis to ultimately cost the Portuguese his job — only months after he signed a new contract.

Nuno "close to agreeing" West Ham deal after Sullivan and Brady talks

As per club insider ExWHUemployee, via West Ham Way, Nuno has already held talks with both Sullivan and Karren Brady about joining West Ham.

While the 51-year-old would prefer a long-term contract, he is said to be considering their offer, and it would appear that Nuno is “close to agreeing” a deal to sign for West Ham — if Potter is indeed shown his P45.

Nuno kept Forest up in his first season and helped to significantly reduce their fragility from set pieces, which is something that West Ham have really struggled with so far this season.

His pragmatic style isn’t exactly the ‘West Ham way’, but he could be exactly what the east Londoners are crying out for right now.

The obvious draw for Sullivan and Brady is his availability as a free agent, so it appears as if this will be one to watch, even if Potter is expected to remain in his post for the time being.

Ex also said, while not confirmed, that West Ham could sack Potter after the Arsenal game — mainly to give Nuno or any new manager the best chance of a good start at home to Brentford after the international break.
