Nuno may have West Ham's new Declan Rice in "effortlessly" brilliant gem

When it comes to truly brilliant players who have represented West Ham United over the last decade or so, the same names will tend to pop up.

Jarrod Bowen is undoubtedly a club legend for his Conference League-winning goal and loyalty, and while Dimitri Payet might have left on poor terms, he was utterly incredible for that year and a bit.

Finally, while he did leave to join another London side, it’s also impossible not to include Declan Rice in this conversation, as he developed from an academy gem into a world-class midfielder at the London Stadium.

The Hammers haven’t been able to replace the Englishman just yet, but Nuno Espírito Santo might have a player who could get close in his current squad.

West Ham's potential Rice heirs

The youngest West Ham gem who could potentially develop into a new Rice-type player for Nuno in the coming years is academy gem Preston Fearon.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The 18-year-old has been making waves in the junior sides for some time now, and was even given his first taste of senior football during pre-season, when he made a cameo in the game against Manchester United, after which Bowen described him as a “special player.”

While he has played in various positions on the pitch during his time in the academy, the exciting prospect is at his best when he plays in central or defensive midfield.

His final similarity to the former Irons captain is his ability to chip in with a goal or assist, as even though he spends much of his time in deeper positions, he has scored three goals and provided seven assists in 39 appearances.

Moving on to an older academy graduate now, and Freddie Potts could eventually become the club’s new Rice.

Like Fearon, the 22-year-old started his footballing career with the East Londoners, joining them at the age of six and making his way through the junior sides before making his debut in late 2021 and then going out on a couple of loans to Wycombe Wanderers and Portsmouth.

The Barking-born ace is another player who can play in central and defensive midfield, and also has some experience at centre-back, but don’t let that fool you into thinking he lacks technical quality.

For example, respected analyst Ben Mattinson highlights his “ball-security, passing range and powerful carrying” as strong points, noting that he is “so smooth on the half-turn and composed under pressure.”

However, while either Potts or Fearon could become West Ham’s future Rice, there is another promising midfielder who could lay claim to that title.

West Ham's potential new Rice

Signed in the summer from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco for a fee of around £17.3m, Nuno could help transform Soungoutou Magassa into West Ham’s new Rice in the coming seasons.

The key reason for this is that, despite having a somewhat mixed start to life in East London, the young Frenchman seems to exhibit the skills necessary to follow in the Englishman’s footsteps: defensive nous and an ability to get the ball forward with purpose.

Mattinson also believes the 22-year-old can fulfil both roles, highlighting his ability to “spray passes wide out to the wings” but also making it clear that “defensively there’s a high potential” in the youngster.

Both sides of the Stains-born gem’s game can be seen in his underlying numbers.

For example, when it comes to the defensive side of things, FBref ranks him in the top 2% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for dribblers tackled and blocks, the top 3% for ball recoveries, and the top 4% for tackles plus interceptions, all per 90.

And then on the other hand, he still ranks in the top 8% for switches, the top 11% for through balls and the top 15% for successful take-on percentage, also per 90.

This combination of a tenacious ball winner and top-notch passing range could be game-changing for the Hamemers this season.

With Bowen on the right and the duo of Crysencio Summerville and El Hadji Malick Diouf on the left, getting the ball out wide as soon as possible could be crucial for quick counter-attacks.

Ultimately, while it might take some time, West Ham’s new “effortlessly” brilliant Magassa, as dubbed by Mattinson, could become Nuno’s own Rice.

INEOS aren't messing around: Man Utd readying £87m bid for "unbelievable" star

Manchester United are now preparing a £87m offer for an “unbelievable” forward, who has amassed 11 goals and assists already this season.

Man Utd keen on new forward despite Mbeumo's impressive start

Off the back of scoring 20 Premier League goals for Brentford last season, Bryan Mbeumo was expected to make an instant impact at Man United, and the forward has certainly made an impressive start, most recently scoring against Liverpool.

The Cameroonian opened the scoring for United after just over one minute, coolly slotting past Giorgi Mamardashvili after being played through by Amad Diallo, with Ruben Amorim’s side going on to pick up a statement 2-1 victory courtesy of a late Harry Maguire winner.

Mbeumo is not the only summer signing who has started to catch the eye in recent weeks, as Benjamin Sesko has found his feet, with the Slovenian finding the back of the net in both the 2-0 victory over Sunderland and 3-1 defeat against Brentford.

With Matheus Cunha also arriving at Old Trafford in the summer, Amorim has plenty of options in attacking areas, but another forward is of interest, with an ambitious move being planned.

Indeed, INEOS certainly aren’t messing around, with a report from Spain revealing Man United are now preparing an offer of around €100m (£87m) for former player Mason Greenwood, who has made an impressive start to the season with Marseille.

£62m Man Utd star looks like their best player "since Fergie retired"

Manchester United might just have turned a corner under Ruben Amorim’s wing.

Marseille would be willing to sanction a departure for the right fee, with United reportedly setting a deadline of the summer transfer window for the Ligue 1 side to agree to their terms, and the Red Devils retain a 50% sell-on fee of any sale, which would lower the cost.

Greenwood shouldn't even be considered by Man Utd

Amorim will be hoping the 2-1 victory at Anfield can be a turning point in the season, with the manager finally winning two Premier League games on the spin, and the 40-year-old is likely to have won plenty of fans around courtesy of the victory over United’s bitter rivals.

Alternatively, signing the 24-year-old would be an incredibly divisive decision, given the way in which he left United, so a move should not even be considered, despite the Englishman’s fantastic start to the campaign, chipping in with 11 goal contributions across all competitions.

Instead of signing their former academy graduate, who Nicky Butt once described as “unbelievable”, the Red Devils could look to sign Real Madrid’s Endrick, with it recently being revealed they are readying a January loan move for the young Brazilian.

However, given the start Mbeumo has made to the season, it would not be the end of the world if United missed out on the signature of another new forward, and Amorim will be hoping the 26-year-old can continue his impressive form against Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

Athletics Walk Off Red Sox and Snap Aroldis Chapman's Historic Hitless Streak

Athletics designated hitter Shea Langeliers did the impossible Wednesday. He got a base hit off Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman.

To lead off the ninth inning, Langeliers hit a double for what was Chapman's first hit surrendered since July 23. He had gone 50 batters and 17 appearances without giving up a hit, which is the third-longest streak in MLB history since 1901, according to ESPN. The only pitchers who have gone more appearances without allowing a hit are Randy Choate of the Marlins with 20 hitless appearances in 2011 and the Mets' Tim Byrdak, who didn't give up a hit in 18 appearances in 2012.

The rare hit on Chapman was a sign of bad things to come for the Boston as Langeliers advanced to third on a flyout before center fielder Lawrence Butler hit a walk-off single to bring him home. The game-winning run was the first earned run Chapman gave up since July 23 as well.

On the season, he has an incredible 1.14 ERA with a 4–3 record, striking out 81 batters to 14 walks. The 37-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Red Sox in the offseason after he spent last year with the Pirates on another one-year deal.

A historic streak ends for the Boston flamethrower, but that only means an opportunity for a new one to begin.

Brewers’ Dominant Run Now Includes Greatest Hot Streak in Franchise History

The Milwaukee Brewers continued to show their dominance in MLB this season after notching their league-leading 69th win on Tuesday night, this time winning over the Atlanta Braves 7-2. It was the team's fifth straight win.

With the win, the Brewers made franchise history by producing their best 60-game stretch throughout their existence. Milwaukee's posted a 44-16 record over the past 60 games—impressive.

To further emphasize the Brewers' dominance, this is also the fastest season in team history in which Milwaukee's reached 25 games over .500. It took them 113 games this year, while the previous record was 119 games during the 2021 season, per MLB's Adam McCalvy.

The franchise's longest winning streak was 13 games in a row completed back in 1987. Could the 2025 squad break another franchise record by stretching out this winning streaks? We'll see how they do.

The Brewers are definitely the team to beat in MLB right now. They hold a 3.5-game lead for the first overall spot in the majors ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays. Milwaukee is four games ahead of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central, too. The Brewers don't seem to be slowing down anytime soon either.

New Padres Reliever Mason Miller Open to Any Role With Team

Mason Miller is ready for whatever role his new team has in store for him.

The Athletics shipped the 26-year-old reliever to the San Diego Padres in a blockbuster deal before the MLB trade deadline and his role is set to change. The All-Star closer has now moved into a setup role for another All-Star closer, Robert Suarez.

The Padres had three relievers on the National League All-Star team this year and have now added Miller, so things could get crowded in the team's bullpen. That's fine with Miller.

During an appearance on , Miller said he's open to whatever the Padres have in mind.

"So far we've had discussions and I think everybody has kind of came to the same conclusion that everybody has the same goal of wanting to make it to October and make a deep run and compete for a World Series," Miller said. "And whatever that role is, I'm prepared to do that. I know that these guys have had a lot of success here, so it's kind of figuring out how I fit into that equation while also keeping everybody fresh."

The big question since the Padres landed Miller is whether or not he'll remain in the bullpen for the rest of his time with the team. He is under team control for another four years after the 2025 season, and came to the big leagues as a starting pitcher. Given the haul San Diego surrendered to acquire him and the team's glut of high-end relievers, a move to the starting rotation would make sense.

Philadelphia Little Leaguers Really Trolled Pete Alonso After Mets Star Struck Out

Each year the Little League Classic gives those competing in Williamsport for youth sport's ultimate crown the opportunity to get up close and personal with Major League Baseball's superstars. It's a feel-good day on the calendar and Sunday night was no different as the New York Mets took down the Seattle Mariners in front of a youthful, particularly enthusiastic crowd.

Little Leaguers from Upper Uwchlan Township in Pennsylvania took advantage of their great seats to let members of the rival Mets know that this particular National League East rivalry takes zero days off even when the core value of sportsmanship is the center of all activities.

Here they are giving the business to Pete Alonso after the slugger struck out, as highlighted by the official MLB account with a crying laughing emoji.

Alonso, if interested in engaging with some tweens, could have the last laugh as the Mets enjoyed a victory and the Little Leaguers trolling him are 0-2 since stepping on the LLWS main stage as the Mid-Atlantic representatives.

Soumya Sarkar and his search for batting stability

The opener has been shunted up and down the order so many times that he feels like each of his innings is like a fight to prove he is worthy

Mohammad Isam in Dhaka09-Mar-2020Soumya Sarkar did the job at No 3 against Zimbabwe. He was asked to do a different one in Lahore couple of months ago. Bat at No. 6 and 7. He had two opportunities but he couldn’t adapt to an unfamiliar role where he had to slog from the word go. Thrusting Sarkar into a new role looked like a desperate attempt by the team management to keep him in the squad, but it certainly wasn’t the first time the decision-makers in the Bangladesh team insisted on having him around.Even for this first T20I against Zimbabwe, conventional wisdom was to keep Mohammad Naim in the line-up, having backed him against India and Pakistan in the previous two ODI series. But it was Sarkar who came out at No. 3 after Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das had plundered 92 for the first wicket. While it was clear that Sarkar wasn’t given the specific role of clearing the boundaries, he still went after the Zimbabwe bowling. He perhaps realised that with the likes of Naim and Najmul Hossain Shanto hot on his heels and Das having captured the opening slot in the ODIs and T20Is for now, he had to get a move on.After seeing out three overs with Das, Sarkar cracked three fours and two sixes in 15 balls, moving to 36, and then in the final over, he struck three sixes off Chris Mpofu, two off the final two balls to take Bangladesh to an even 200 in 20 overs. It has been a very long time since the Mirpur crowd has seen Sarkar dominate in this manner.”I saw in the ODIs that they didn’t bowl well in the death overs so I was planning to take it deep,” he said after making 62 off only 32 balls. “I targeted one of those big overs. I have always played in the top order, and when the team has required, I have played at number six and seven. I have always tried to prove myself, but it hasn’t happened lower down the order. So I wanted to cement my place when I got out to bat today.”While this was a role he was quite familiar with, coming to bat at one down or opening the batting, Sarkar said that he had to take guidance from others when he was asked to bat in the middle or lower order.”When I bat in the top order, it is a familiar role as I have been a top-order batsman since my childhood,” he said. “I know I have to use the Powerplay fielding restrictions or build an innings. But when I am batting down the order, I ask the seniors how to bat in that position. I sometimes ask the computer analyst what I should do – go for the shots or support the set batsman. Sometimes it depends on the match situation.”Sarkar cannot explicitly say what his preferred batting position should be, as it is against the team culture in Bangladesh. He has been tried almost everywhere. He started off as a top-order batsman in ODIs and naturally he carried out the same role to the T20s. In Test cricket, too he has mostly opened the batting but the last time he went out to bat against the red ball, against Afghanistan in Chattogram in September, Shakib Al Hasan sent him at No. 8.Sarkar is a management favourite because of his class as a batsman; class that he showed in plenty during his first six months as an international cricketer. That is why it is so hard to give up on him. In the Asia Cup two years ago, even though Bangladesh needed middle-order reinforcements, it was him they ended up calling up (alongside Imrul Kayes).Sarkar didn’t do well at the 2019 World Cup, and followed it up with a 60-odd against Sri Lanka last July. He kept playing T20Is without crossing the 39-run mark. He lost his place in the Test side and possibly has in the ODI side too, unless the team management decides to bring him back in Karachi next month.Sarkar knows he has to keep improving, even though stability has been something he has not had too much of lately. That is perhaps why he feels every time he goes out to bat he has to go out of his way to nail down his spot.”I still try to maintain a high strike-rate,” he said, “But now I try to fit myself to the situation, or choose a certain bowler. If I had made better runs in India [in November], I would have held my place in Pakistan. So I am trying to hold on to my place every time I go out to bat.”

Five memorable T20s in the UAE

Two IPL thrillers, drama in the Pakistan Super League and a Super Over between Pakistan and Australia back in 2012

Himanshu Agrawal10-Sep-2020Pakistan v Australia, bilateral series match, Dubai, 2012

Two days after crumbling for 89 in the first T20I of a see-saw limited overs tour of the UAE, Australia nearly levelled the series. Kamran Akmal’s late fireworks pushed Pakistan to 151. Australia started the chase aggressively before Saeed Ajmal flummoxed both David Warner and Shane Watson to spark a collapse. George Bailey’s 42 off 27 kept Australia in it, and it came down to seven needed from two balls. Pat Cummins hit Abdul Razzaq for a six, but then spooned the next ball to mid-off to leave the scores level. In the Super Over, Australia scored 11. Cummins, then just 19, was chosen to defend it. Umar Akmal hit his second ball for four, and then Razzaq got another boundary off the fourth. Pakistan were left with two to get off the last ball, and Cummins’ attempted bouncer was called a wide. Akmal tapped the next ball to cover and sprinted for the single. There was a run-out chance, but Dan Christian failed to collect the throw at the non-striker’s end and Pakistan took the series.Kolkata Knight Riders v Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL, Sharjah, 2014
The Royal Challengers had begun the tournament with two wins and were favourites to chase 151, with Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Yuvraj Singh and Albie Morkel in their batting line-up. Kohli and Yuvraj scored slowly in a partnership of 55 but they still required only 29 from 25 balls when Kohli was dismissed. The runs would not come for Yuvraj, who had faced a similar predicament in the T20 World Cup final less than three weeks before. He struggled to 31 off 34 balls before holing out in the 19th over. RCB needed nine off the final over, bowled by Vinay Kumar. After three singles, Chris Lynn took a sensational catch at deep midwicket to dismiss de Villiers. Morkel had to get six from two deliveries, but Vinay Kumar allowed only three to complete a remarkable comeback win for KKR.A triple-wicket over from James Faulkner was key to an exciting Rajasthan Royals win in the 2014 IPL•BCCIKolkata Knight Riders v Rajasthan Royals, IPL, Abu Dhabi, 2014
Ajinkya Rahane’s 72 and cameos from Shane Watson and Steven Smith helped the Royals to 152. In reply, Gautam Gambhir limped to 45 off 44. With 16 needed from 11 balls, James Faulkner foxed Suryakumar Yadav, Robin Uthappa and Vinay Kumar in the same over, making Royals favourites to clinch the win. But Shakib al Hasan struck a boundary and two doubles in the last over to tie the match. In the Super Over, Manish Pandey’s six off Faulkner set the Royals 12 to get. Sunil Narine conceded four off the first three, then Watson slogged him to deep midwicket for four. Watson then took a single to leave Smith with three to get. Knowing two would be enough since Royals had the boundary advantage, Smith pushed the ball to deep extra cover for an easy double.Peshawar Zalmi v Quetta Gladiators, PSL qualifying final, Sharjah, 2017
In the first qualifying final of the 2017 Pakistan Super League, Ahmed Shehzad and Kevin Pietersen led an early onslaught, taking the Gladiators to 121 in the first 10 overs. Zalmi were able to pull things back a bit, but were still left chasing 201. They were 3 for 2 in the chase, but Dawid Malan and Mohammad Hafeez kept them in it with rapid fifties. That set the match up for Boom Boom Shahid Afridi. Just three days before, he had smacked 45 off 23 to deliver a win against the same opposition. This time, his team needed 59 off 6.1 overs, and he clattered 34 from 13 deliveries. He was out in the 19th, but Zalmi needed just seven off the final over with four wickets in hand and Daren Sammy still batting. Sammy scored five off the first three balls, but then couldn’t get back on strike as Zalmi lost three straight wickets, the final two run-outs. It was a remarkable collapse. Zalmi did manage to make it to the final after winning the next qualifier, beating Gladiators comfortably to win the cup.Islamabad United v Lahore Qalandars, PSL, Sharjah, 2018
A low-scoring thriller in which spinners dominated before an Andre Russell special finished the game. Yasir Shah and Sunil Narine, whose four overs went for just 10 runs, kept Islamabad United to 121. The Qalandars were cruising in the chase at 77 for 2 in the 12th over, but then collapsed, losing a wicket in nearly every over. Brendon McCullum watched from one end as his team-mates fell. Eventually, he was left with seven to get off the final over with just two wickets remaining. He was run out on the second ball, but No. 10 Salman Irshad slashed a six over deep point to tie the scores. He holed out to the next ball, and the match went to a Super Over. The Qalandars batted first, and McCullum and Umar Akmal hit a six each to get to 15. Asif Ali and Russell chased for Islamabad. McCullum dropped Asif at long-on second ball, and the ball went over the rope for six. Russell was left with eight to win off two balls. A top-edged four, a six over long-on, and Islamabad were celebrating. For the Qalandars, it was a sixth straight defeat.
