"Maybe he will have to change jobs and play as a striker," Amrabat joked to . "We [obviously] have fantastic strikers like Rasmus [Hojlund], Antony, [Anthony] Martial. It is clear that Scott is very important as he scored two goals. What else do I have to say, he was fantastic!"

THE BIGGER PICTURE

McTominay is United's top scorer in all competitions, having scored five times in the Premier League and once in the Champions League across 16 matches. Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund are on five goals each, having played 21 and 18 matches respectively. United are struggling for reliable attacking options as winger Marcus Rashford has failed to get going this season and was dropped to the bench on Wednesday night alongside Anthony Martial, who has only scored one league goal.

Bavuma, Pretorius star as Lions claim title

A Temba Bavuma century was followed up by a five-wicket haul from seamer Dwaine Pretorius as Lions took an unassailable lead at the top of the Sunfoil Series table. Although Dolphins, placed second, tail battled valiantly to pull off a draw, the final wicket fell in the final over of the final day and they were beaten by 188 runs in Durban.Victory gave Lions their first title since the franchise system was introduced – Gauteng last won the first-class competition in 1999-2000. They will be presented with the trophy during the final round of games next week, when they play Warriors in Johannesburg.Lions were in early strife after they were put in but 5 for 1 and 36 for 2 became a distant memory when Bavuma and Thami Tsolekile joined together for the fifth wicket. The 146-run partnership shut the door on Dolphins. Bavuma capitalised on his recent form – his 153 off 217 balls was his third fifty-plus score on the trot and included 21 fours – as Tsolekile played second-fiddle, although his 127-ball 61 included two sixes. Chris Morris’ all-round ability at No. 8 came in handy as he marshaled the tail after both batsmen were dismissed; his 57 gave Lions a massive 395 runs on the board.Pretorius thrust Lions’ advantage home with his second-first class five-for, finishing with figures of 20-8-64-5. He removed two of the three batsmen to score fifties – Daniel Sincuba for 56 and Morne van Wyk for 68 – and two other top-six batsmen for single-figures. Dolphins were 101 for 5 when the other half-centurion Daryn Smit (60) resisted in a 116-run stand with van Wyk, but they were bowled out for 280 and conceded a decisive 115-run lead.Stephen Cook, the Lions captain, then treated himself to 143 off 263 balls in the second innings and became the top-scorer of the tournament. His opening partner Rassie van der Dussen contributed 78 to a mammoth opening stand of 177; they now feature in two of the top-five partnerships this season. Bavuma updated his match tally with 60 more runs and Dolphins were left chasing an improbable target of 471 in 69 overs.Again they could only muster three half-centuries, van Wyk (50*) and Sincuba (50) were joined by Khaya Zondo (72) this time. Dolphins were nine down with 15 overs remaining but Daryn Dupavillon was resolute; then, with six balls left in the day, Eddie Leie, having already picked up three wickets, toppled the partnership and Dolphins’ hopes.Double tons from Cape Cobras‘ Omphile Ramela and Titans‘ Dean Elgar saw the two teams settle for a draw as rain forced an early end to the match on the fourth day in BenoniAfter choosing to bowl, Titans conceded 484 over two days and 143.5 overs. Cobras were set back by Stiaan van Zyl retiring hurt in the fifth over. But Ramela joined Andrew Puttick and put on 154 for the first wicket, Cobras’ best partnership of the game. David Wiese broke through the defences of Puttick for 74 in the 51st over but Ramela would pile on the misery, batting for over 10 hours for his 202 which included 27 fours and two sixes.Van Zyl also returned to make 73 off 97 balls, but Cobras could only manage 62 runs for their final five wickets as Rowan Richards picked up 5 for 114.Titans had 10 overs to negotiate to stumps on the second day, but Kyllin Vardhan was caught behind off Beuran Hendricks. Resuming on 21 for 1, Elgar put on 173 for the second wicket with Henry Davids, who was eventually dismissed by left-arm spinner Robin Peterson for 52 off 140. Cobras’ bowlers had no further success on the third day as Elgar raced to his 23rd first class ton – off 132 balls – and took Titans to stumps at 282 for 2 with Theunis de Bruyn (60) at stumps on the third day.Elgar retired hurt after over seven hours at the crease, his 208 came off 277 balls and included 26 fours and two sixes. Eight overs later the rain came.In East London, an unbeaten second-innings hundred from Pite van Biljon helped Knights to their third win of the season, which allowed them to leapfrog Warriors in the table. Despite having taken a 78-run lead, Knights were in danger of squandering their advantage at 45 for 4 but van Biljon’s innings allowed them to eventually declare on 253 for 7, setting Warriors a target of 332.The home side made a decent start on the final day, reaching 128 for 1, but Colin Ackermann was the only batsman to progress past 50 as the Knights attack worked their way through the order. Corne Dry picked up three wickets and Dillon du Preez two – to follow 3 for 13 from 16.3 overs in the first innings – and when Ackermann became the eighth wicket to fall, Warriors’ hopes were extinguished. After choosing to bat, Knights only managed to post 223, with Rudi Second’s 64 the top score. Andrew Birch and Basheeru-Deen Walters shared seven wickets between them. Warriors then crawled to 145 all out in 71.3 overs and although Birch’s five-wicket haul gave them a glimpse, van Biljon built partnerships of 76 and 109 with Second and Werner Coetsee to take the game away.

Rampant Karnataka thirst for more glory

Karnataka enter the Irani Trophy as massive favourites, eager to become the first Indian domestic team to complete back to back trebles

The Preview by Arun Venugopal16-Mar-2015Match FactsMarch 17-21, 2015
Start time 0930 ISTAfter achieving a historic treble last season, defending champions Karnataka will look for an encore•PTI Big PictureThe Irani Cup at the end of the season resembles a hurriedly assembled reception after an exhausting wedding. It is a tough ask for any team nursing the hangover of a victorious Ranji campaign, to reset the clock for another championship match. However, the advantage for defending champions Karnataka could well be the knowhow, having done it once last season during the course of their historic treble – they registered a massive innings win over Rest of India at the same venue – and the relentless quest to perpetuate their legacy. As Karnataka’s captain Vinay Kumar said in the pre-match press conference, Karnataka “want to win every game, and don’t really think about the tournaments.” One of their biggest strengths is the presence of a young, united bunch that has shared the same dressing room for a few years now. Robin Uthappa gave a glimpse of the mindset when he said: “You will have 16-17 guys after your life if you say one thing to us.”At the other end of the spectrum are the Rest of India side, usually an ensemble of the best players in the country. There are a few questionable inclusions in the team, though. Both Jiwanjot Singh and B Aparajith, tallying 553 at 29.10, didn’t have a great Ranji season. Neither did their captain, Manoj Tiwary, but in his defence he led from the front with two match-winning performances, as East Zone lifted the Deodhar Trophy title.Tiwary, while acknowledging there was “very little time to gel together”, said he personally knew most of the players, and was confident they knew what was expected of them.Pitch and conditionsThe wicket has a good coverage of grass, and the bounce and carry will help the seamers. There is also likely to be some assistance for the spinners by the end of the second day as the pitch dries up.In the spotlightEven as Karnataka’s top-order batsmen were busy tending to 50-plus averages, Manish Pandey had a middling run in the Ranji Trophy, scoring only a hundred and a fifty at 35.62. With home advantage on his side, the Karnataka vice-captain would be keen to make amends.Jiwanjot Singh remained unaffected by the ‘second-season curse’ after topping the run-charts in his debut season. But he had a below-par outing this season, managing only 386 runs at 23.73. He would look to correct the anomaly against a first-rate bowling attack.SquadsKarnataka: Vinay Kumar(capt), Manish Pandey (vice-capt), Robin Uthappa, R Samarth, Karun Nair, Shreyas Gopal, Kunal Kapoor, Udit Patel, A Mithun, S Aravind, HS Sharath, J Suchith, KC Avinash, Abhishek Reddy, Mayank Agarwal
Rest of India: Manoj Tiwary (capt), Unmukt Chand, Jiwanjot Singh, Paras Dogra, Kedar Jadhav, Naman Ojha, Rishi Dhawan, Jayant Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Shardul Thakur, Varun Aaron, Rush Kalaria, Baba Aparajith, Jalaj Saxena, Vijay ShankarTeam newsVinay confirmed that KL Rahul and CM Gautam have both been ruled out with hamstring injuries. Robin Uthappa will keep wickets and likely open the batting with R Samarth, who batted at the same position in the Ranji Trophy final against Tamil Nadu. Abishek Reddy is likely to make his debut.Tiwary said Rest of India were likely to field an attack comprising three seamers and a spinner. Pragyan Ojha will play as the lead spinner.Stats and triviaVinay Kumar will be playing his 100th first-class match. If Karnataka beat Rest of India, they will be only the second State team to win the Irani Cup two years in succession since its inception in 1959-60. Mumbai have bagged the title twice in succession on four occasions. Robin Uthappa is 88 short of scoring 1000 runs in the season. No other batsman has managed the feat in 2014-15.Quotes”In the domestic circuit, now Karnataka stand one step ahead of other teams. With the kind of players we have, yes, the opposition looks at us differently. This game will be big for all the players, as the selectors will be watching this game. So, we won’t take any team or match lightly.””The important thing in their side in the balance. They have a lot of variations. I have been following their matches on the television. I have identified areas where to attack them and make strategies. We have to now execute that on the field.”

Rams crushed after collapsing to 53

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jan-2015Group IFile photo: Mohammad Talha took 4 for 24 to peg Karachi Zebras back•AFPMohammad Hasan’s maiden List-A hundred helped Karachi Dolphins gun down 279 against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited in Karachi. Dolphins’ chase was powered by an unbroken 140-run partnership between Hasan and Saad Ali. Hasan scored a 117-ball 131 with 16 fours, while Saad’s 53 not out featured five fours and a six, as Dolphins raced home inside 42 overs. Earlier, ZTBL, opting to bat, had compiled 278 for 5. Their innings was built on a 122-run opening stand between Sharjeel Khan (67) and Yasir Hameed (63), before Shoaib Malik (66) and Abdul Razzaq (63) muscled half-centuries of their own.A fifty from Adil Amin and a three-for from Taj Wali were the cornerstones behind Peshawar Panthers’ 24-run victory against National Bank of Pakistan. Batting first, Amin stroked 51 and was part of a 76-run stand for the third wicket. It gave Panthers a solid platform, which Akbar Badshah used by smashing a 21-ball 42 to lift the team to 219 for 7. National Bank’s chase was blighted by wickets right from the off, as they soon found themselves struggling at 88 for 5. Qaiser Abbas struck a quick 60 to give National Bank hope, but he was bowled by Amin, as the team lost their last five wickets for just 36 runs to fold for 195.Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited posted the biggest victory of the round, as they crushed Rawalpindi Rams by 10 wickets. Rams, opting to bat, lasted just 18.1 overs, as they were shot out for 53. Haseeb Azam, with 12, was the team’s top scorer and only batsman to reach double digits, as four players fell for ducks. Atif Jabbar was the pick of an incisive bunch of bowlers, taking 3 for 13, while Asad Ali, Imran Khalid and Hussain Talat claimed two scalps each. SNGPL chased down the paltry target in 10.1 overs.Group IIKhurram Manzoor and Mohammad Talha played starring roles in Port Qasim Authority’s thumping eight-wicket win against Karachi Zebras. Opting to bowl, Talha made immediate impact as he ripped through Zebras’ top order to reduce them to 36 for 4, last three of those wickets coming within five runs of each other. Saud Shakeel (57 off 101 balls) ensured it wasn’t a total capitulation by forging useful partnerships with the lower order, which helped the team reach 200 for 8 in 50 overs.Port Qasim’s batsmen then rallied towards the target briskly. After an opening partnership of 41, Manzoor and Khalid Latif (59 off 74), the captain, added 74 for the second, before Manzoor and Umar Amin closed doors on Zebras by adding an unbeaten 86 to complete the chase with 13.4 overs to spare. Manzoor remained unbeaten on 83 that included 13 fours.Khan Research Laboratories made it two wins in two matches with a comfortable victory over Islamabad Leopards. Chasing 238, KRL openers Zain Abbas and Mohammad Yasin smashed contrasting half-centuries during a 116-run opening stand and set a strong foundation. While Abbas’ 85 came off 115 deliveries, Yasin’s 72 took 66 balls and included 11 fours and 2 sixes. A 61-run second-wicket stand between Abbas and Saeed Anwar jnr then ensured a smooth passage and KRL overhauled the target with 5.3 overs remaining. Earlier, Sadaf Hussain had rattled Leopards’ top order with three early wickets. A 106-run sixth-wicket stand between Zohaib Ahmed (89) and Sarmad Bhatti (60) propped up Leopards from a shaky 71 for 5, but it wasn’t enough.Centuries by openers Mukhtar Ahmed and Babar Azam helped State Bank of Pakistan overhaul Lahore Lions’ total of 256 with plenty of time to spare. The nine-wicket win pushed State Bank to the top of the Group II table. Mukhtar was the only wicket to fall, but only after he had set the tempo with his maiden List A hundred and a dominating 213-run opening stand with Azam, who remained unbeaten on 129. Between the two, 24 fours and two sixes. Lions tried out eight bowlers but they neither fetched wickets or stemmed the flow of runs. Thirty-three balls remained when the chase ended. Lions’ innings had revolved around two half-centuries – a 96-ball 67 by opener Mohammad Ikhlaq and a rapid 72, that included four sixes, by Saad Nasim. Other batsmen in the top order got starts, but failed to convert them to substantial scores. Zafar Gohar was the most successful bowler with 4 for 52.

India captain MS Dhoni will not return for the final two ODIs of the Sri Lanka series, as he is yet to recover from a thumb injury. He had not played in the first three one-dayers either, and Virat Kohli will continue to captain in his absence. The selectors have also rested Shikhar Dhawan and Ravindra Jadeja for these games.Robin Uthappa has been included in the squad as the first-choice wicketkeeper, while Rohit Sharma makes a return to the squad after a two-month injury layoff due to a finger injury and a shoulder strain.Should part-time keeper Uthappa, who also keeps for his IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, need back-up, batsmen Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav can also fill in with the gloves. Uthappa has been entrusted with keeping duties since the selectors want to explore an alternate option ahead of the World Cup, should Dhoni need a break in any of the games.Jadhav was one of the five people brought into the squad, along with Uthappa, Rohit, seamer Vinay Kumar and legspinner Karn Sharma. Karn has been in good touch recently, consistently claiming wickets in the domestic one-dayers for Railways and against the touring West Indians and Sri Lankans for India A. Jadhav had hit three half-centuries in a row for India A on their tour to Australia in July and August.Apart from Dhawan and Jadeja, the others missing from the squad that was named for the first three ODIs are injured fast bowlers Varun Aaron and Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, legspinner Amit Mishra, opener M Vijay.Ishant was not considered for the last two ODIs due to a stiff back. “He will travel with the squad to be monitored by the physios and trainers,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said.He also confirmed that there was nothing the matter with Saha. “Nothing is wrong with Saha, but we wanted to give a chance to other players and test them before the World Cup. Saha is a very good wicketkeeper.”India have already won the series against Sri Lanka, with three thumping wins.

Tsotsobe bowls Lions to victory

A three-wicket burst from Lonwabo Tsotsobe at the death helped Lions win their first Momentum Cup game, against Warriors in Potchefstroom, by 20 runs

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Oct-2014
ScorecardA three-wicket burst from Lonwabo Tsotsobe at the death helped Lions win their first Momentum Cup game, against Warriors in Potchefstroom, by 20 runs. Tsotsobe derailed a threatening Warriors chase and finished with 5 for 44, only his second List A five-wicket haul in 130 games.Half-centuries from JJ Smuts and Colin Ingram had set up Warriors and they progressed to 195 for 2 in the 37th over before the slide began. Ryan Bailey and Somila Seyibokwe fell in successive overs, and Smuts followed soon too, but after Christiaan Jonker hit Aaron Phangiso for two sixes, Warriors needed 52 off 42 balls with five wickets in hand.Tsotsobe then knocked over Jonker and Andrew Birch in the 44th over and Sisanda Magala in the 46th to lift Lions. At the end of Tsotsobe’s spell, Warriors needed 39 off 24 balls and they were eventually dismissed for 271.Lions’ total of 291 for5 was set up by a collective batting performance. Quinton de Kock scored a brisk half-century at the top and Thami Tsolekile finished the innings with 51 off 36 balls. In the middle, Neil McKenzie contributed 73 while the others chipped in with handy cameos. All seven Lions batsmen made double-figure scores.

Carrots and sticks keep Srinivasan confident

The Supreme Court’s strictures on N Srinivasan and the BCCI elections don’t seem to have affected preparations within the board for Sunday’s annual general meeting, of which the elections are a part

Amol Karhadkar27-Sep-2013

The successor to Rajiv Shukla as IPL chairman is among the things to be decided at the AGM•AFP

The Supreme Court’s strictures on N Srinivasan and the BCCI elections don’t seem to have affected preparations within the board for Sunday’s annual general meeting, of which the elections are a part. Srinivasan’s own confident statement that he would attend the meeting and stand for re-election is mirrored in the business-as-usual attitude of his colleagues on the board, making any discussion on whether he should or should not contest irrelevant.Right now, there is serious business to be concluded: The distribution of the various board posts and similar rewards. The deadline to file nominations for all the nine posts – president, secretary, treasurer, joint secretary and five vice-presidents – ends at 4pm on Saturday, enabling all sorts of possible compromises for all the top posts. The corollary – the prospect of losing out on staging matches or landing plum tour assignments – is what is keeping the opposition in check. All the five incumbent vice-presidents, one from each zone, are set to be replaced, the final decisions regarding their replacements to be taken in the zonal unit meetings on Saturday morning. At the same time, once the likes of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Arun Jaitley, Rajiv Shukla and Anurag Thakur – key figures in the BCCI – check in to their hotel, the candidates for other key positions, including that of the IPL governing council chairman, will be zeroed in on.Despite the board seemingly divided in the aftermath of the IPL corruption scandal, it is unlikely that there will be an election for any of the top posts. Traditionally, once a president is elected unopposed in the BCCI, even the other office-bearers emerge as consensus candidates from his group of supporters. It would be interesting to see whether Sanjay Patel and Ravi Savant, who were appointed secretary and treasurer in June following the resignations of Sanjay Jagdale and Ajay Shirke, end up retaining their positions. With Srinivasan’s re-election in little doubt, the sole question concerns who will preside over the AGM. Similar to most of the AGMs, where the members usually request the senior-most member attending the meeting to preside, it is likely that Dalmiya, who has been running the board’s day-to-day affairs during Srinivasan’s “exile”, may chair the AGM.In a way, BCCI officials appear relieved that Srinivasan’s decision to step aside, in the wake of the IPL spot-fixing scandal that saw his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan arrested, has been vindicated. While questions were raised over whether the BCCI constitution allowed for the president to “step aside”, the Supreme Court’s directive will most probably mean the arrangement will prevail till the BCCI’s legal tussle with Cricket Association of Bihar ends.In any case, officials believe it will only be a matter of days before the case is resolved. The Supreme Court’s next hearing is on Monday, the day after the meeting.
