ScorecardWest Indies captain Merissa Aguilleira’s unbeaten 34 helped the team clinch a narrow two-wicket win off the last ball against Sri Lanka in the first of the three Twenty20s. In a match in which only four batsmen got into double-digits scores, Aguilleira’s innings turned out to be the difference.Sri Lanka chose to bat, but were in trouble soon as they lost their top five with only 39 on the board. They struggled the most against Shakera Selman, who had figures of 2 for 14, and Shanel Daley, who didn’t get a wicket but gave away only 10 runs in her four overs. Only two of Sri Lanka’s batsmen – Eshani Kaushalya and Dilani Manodara – got into double figures and helped the team crawl to 87.West Indies’ innings followed the same pattern as Sri Lanka’s for the most part. They were reduced to 27 for 4 after Kaushalya picked three wickets in her first three overs. Stafanie Taylor scored a vital 25 and when she was out with 29 runs still needed, the match hung in balance. Aguilleira saw three more wickets go down at the other end, but held her end and hit a boundary off the last ball when they required two runs.

BCB in second stage of planning for Pakistan tour

The Bangladesh Cricket Board is in talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board about a short tour to the country next month

Mohammad Isam14-Dec-2012The Bangladesh Cricket Board is in talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board about a short tour to the country next month. BCB president Nazmul Hassan said that the talks are now all about a suitable timeframe for the tour.”We can’t go in December so we will speak to the PCB today, about whether we can fit in a small tour before the BPL,” Hassan told ESPNcricinfo.Bangladesh’s proposed tour to Pakistan hit a snag earlier this year when, on April 19, a Dhaka court order embargoed a series between the two scheduled for the end of April. In November, Hassan said that the BCB had made a “written commitment” to the PCB to go ahead with the tour.On Friday Hassan explained that they are now in the second phase of talks with the PCB because the first phase, which dealt with security issues, was satisfactory. “I have spoken to those who went for the security assessment and they are quite satisfied,” he said. “If we can agree on a time, we will go next month.”He also said that the players and the support staff will be spoken to about the tour, but no one will be forced to go on the tour. “The last time when we discussed [touring Pakistan], we wanted to talk to the players and find out their opinion. We will also speak to foreign staff but it is highly likely that they won’t go. That we can understand. We don’t want to force them.”Back in March, the ICC had introduced a “special dispensation” to be made only in “exceptional circumstances” that allowed bilateral series to take place even if the ruling body determined it “unsafe” to appoint its officials for these series. This would allow such series to be manned by “non-neutral match officials”, a departure from the ICC’s Standard Playing Conditions.Hassan said the dispensation will take effect if the ICC doesn’t send its officials to conduct the matches. “They [ICC] are quite clear about it. They want us to decide if we want to go or not. We will submit a security plan to them, after which they will decide whether they will send their match officials or not. If they don’t, we will have to appoint match officials.”

Guptill confident of New Zealand saving Test

By the time New Zealand ended West Indies’ first innings at lunch on the fourth day, they had conceded a lead of 171 with five sessions left in the Test. The challenge ahead of the visitors was a test of mental strength as much as skills. Martin Guptill responded with his second half-century of the match and his partnership with Brendon McCullum left New Zealand in a sound position to save the game. After an opening partnership of 47 in less than 11 overs, Guptill added 123 for the second wicket before he was dismissed on 67 by Sunil Narine. McCullum contributed 84 before Kemar Roach bowled him late in the day. Their efforts allowed New Zealand to finish 28 ahead with seven wickets in hand.”We did a good job out there,” Guptill said. “Myself and Flynny ]Daniel Flynn] first off and then myself and Brendon put on a good partnership there, and [it was] a little bit disappointing to get out in the end but that’s the way cricket is.”It was difficult. It was hot out there, and it’s always difficult on these slow wickets but they bowled very well to us and myself and Brendon combated that pretty well. We scored at a better rate this innings that we did in the first innings, and that’s put us in a good stead to set up tomorrow.New Zealand are one good session away from saving this Test and Guptill backed Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson to pull it off. He said Williamson had proven himself in such situations, having secured a draw with 102 against South Africa in Wellington this year.”We’ve got some class batsmen to come in and Kane showed what he can do in the last Test against South Africa, and we have Ross now at the crease who is a class act as well,” he said. “We’ve got plenty of batting there to come. It [the Wellington Test] gives us a lot of confidence because we’ve been there and done it.”The key to surviving the fifth day will be negotiating Narine, who took five wickets in the first innings and has two so far in the second. Guptill felt New Zealand were growing more adept at playing the spinner.”It’s just watching the ball hard and watching what his [Narine’s] hand is doing. You can pick up a couple of little keys with his delivery, and if you can pick those up then you’re doing well in picking him,” Guptill said. “We’ve played him a lot this series and watching his hand, it’s getting easier the more you face him.Guptill was out to a Narine delivery that bounced, touched his glove and was caught by short leg. “You have to watch the ball hard and be able to pick him, and I thought myself and Brendon played him pretty well today. There were a few balls that kicked up a bit and I got out to one of them, it’s just one of those things.”New Zealand had been unable to take the last four West Indies wickets quickly in the morning, and the hosts extended their lead from 91 to 171. Guptill, however, was pleased at the timing of the close of innings – the stroke of lunch.”The guys showed great toil this morning with the ball and the last four wickets fell at the stroke of lunch, which let us to go inside and refresh a bit before we came out and batted.”

Guptill has a blast after Glamorgan errors

Martin Guptill, took full advantage of Glamorgan’s generosity to score a century between lunch and tea and put Derbyshire in a strong position

17-May-2012
ScorecardNew Zealand’s Test opener, Martin Guptill, took full advantage of Glamorgan’s generosity to score his second century of the season and put Derbyshire in a strong position on the second day of the Division Two match at Derby. Guptill was dropped three times on his way to 132 and added 170 with Derbyshire’s skipper Wayne Madsen, who was unbeaten on 122 as the home side closed at 335 for 5, a lead of 99.Although Marcus North took 3 for 40 with his off-spin on debut for Glamorgan, his sixth county, an injury-depleted attack struggled on a good pitch and Guptill punished them by completing a hundred between lunch and tea.Mike Reed claimed his first Championship victims but the bowlers failed to build up any sustained pressure and allowed the home side to take control after light rain delayed the start by 75 minutes. With their leading strike bowlers Graham Wagg and James Harris both missing, Glamorgan needed to take every opportunity that came their way but Guptill was given two lives before Derbyshire had reached three figures.Skipper Mark Wallace failed to cling on to a difficult chance down the leg side off the former England pace bowler, Simon Jones, when Guptill was 17 and the score 35, but Nick James’ drop at mid-off when he was 65 was a bad one.By then, Reed had celebrated his first Championship wicket by having Paul Borrington caught behind for 15 shortly before lunch but the afternoon session belonged to Guptill and Madsen who plundered 156 runs in 40 overs. Guptill took three fours from a Reed over on his way to an 88-ball 50 and he moved into overdrive to reach his century, which contained 19 fours, from 143 balls.Jones fluffed a simple chance at backward point when he was on 114 but three overs after tea he was lbw trying to whip Reed through midwicket.By then, Derbyshire were closing in on Glamorgan’s 236 and Wes Durston contributed half of a 60 stand in 12 overs before he skied a sweep to deep square leg.North took a return catch off a leading edge to remove Dan Redfern for a duck but Madsen patiently moved to his second hundred of the season from 192 balls to leave his side with a good chance of completing a Championship double over Glamorgan and a third victory of the campaign.

Magoffin debut stuns Lancashire

Australian Steve Magoffin made an instant impact for Sussex with a debut seven-for to seal a notable ten-wicket win over the defending champions, Lancashire, inside three days.

Graham Hardcastle at Aigburth14-Apr-2012Steve Magoffin, the tall fast bowler who last month played a crucial all-round role in Queensland’s Sheffield Shield Final win over Tasmania at the Gabba, made an instant impact for Sussex with a debut seven-for to seal a notable ten-wicket win over the defending champions, Lancashire, inside three days. Here, in chilly Liverpool conditions far removed from the heat of Brisbane, Magoffin bounded up the hill from the Pavilion End to add the wickets of Ashwell Prince, Glen Chapple, Kyle Hogg and Simon Kerrigan to the three he took during Thursday’s evening session, so clinching 22 points for his new county.”That’s pretty much the coldest I have ever played in,” said Magoffin, whose match figures of 9 for 55 were the second best of his career. “It was 40 degrees and humid the last time I played at the Gabba. It’s not so much when you’re bowling as when you aren’t that the temperature is a problem.”Magoffin’s Shield final was no easy ride either. He suffered back spasms on the opening day and the following morning had to make an emergency call to Martin Love, the Queensland physiotherapist and former Test batsman, to help him get out of bed. He returned to take one second innings wicket and then score an unbeaten 26 as they just about crept over the line in a nervy pursuit of 133.”I had various tablets to get myself out there,” he said at the time. “I probably sounded like a Tic-Tac packet running in there.”Lancashire, 85 for four at the start of the third day, still trailing by 91 runs, began positively thanks to Prince and Luke Procter, their young all-rounder whose style of play was not so long ago described as a cross between Neil Fairbrother and Darren Lehmann by the club’s assistant coach, Gary Yates. Procter drove and pulled Monty Panesar’s left-arm spin for successive boundaries during the day’s ninth over, but fell to the England spinner when he skewed a lofted on-drive to Luke Wells at point.Magoffin bowled the majority of his overs from the River End during the match but switched ends before lunch with great effect, getting Prince caught behind for 58 and Chapple caught at first slip by Michael Yardy, whose first-innings hundred had put Sussex in such a dominant position.Rain delayed the start of the afternoon session by 25 minutes, though it was only a brief stay of execution for the hosts because Magoffin bowled Hogg and had Kerrigan caught behind to make the perfect start to his third spell in English cricket following brief stays at Surrey and Worcestershire, where his wife, Becky, worked in the club’s offices.”I didn’t learn I was coming here until late March when I got the call to say that the qualification scenario had changed with my wife being British and that they could get me in to play here on a spouse visa as an overseas player,” he said. “I haven’t played here in four years, and I’ve been restricted because of not playing international cricket. I’m here for a few months and looking forward to contributing. Mark Robinson [Sussex’s coach] has got me over to do that role, to bowl maidens and build pressure.”Lancashire’s fate was sealed when Ed Joyce swept the solitary run required off the third ball of the Sussex chase, leaving them with a lot to ponder ahead of Thursday’s meeting with Warwickshire on this ground. Chapple, their captain, said: “We got into the game on the second day and played some decent stuff, but it was a little bit ‘too little, too late’. It was a poor toss to lose but they definitely outplayed us.”

Anderson winning fitness race

England’s spinner Graeme Swann is confident that his team-mate James Anderson will be passed fit in time to face India in the fourth and final Test

James Anderson appears to winning his battle for fitness ahead of the fourth and final Test against India at The Oval on Thursday, after taking a significant part in Wednesday’s practice session. England’s captain, Andrew Strauss, said he was “very optimistic” that Anderson would be available for selection, but said that a final decision on his right quadriceps strain would be taken on the morning of the game.Anderson, who tore through India’s top order with each of the first four wickets to fall in their second innings at Edgbaston, has 18 wickets in the series to date and has risen to No. 2 in the world rankings. However, he complained of stiffness in his thigh after the Edgbaston match, and the Durham paceman, Graham Onions, was called into the squad as cover.Given how valuable Anderson has become as their attack leader, England have already demonstrated a desire to treat him cautiously this summer. He missed the second Test against Sri Lanka earlier in the season as a precaution, having sustained a side strain midway through the opening Test of the summer at Cardiff. This time, however, Strauss seems happier that his star bowler is ready for action. “We are very optimistic he’s fit to play,” he said. “He had a good bowl today, but like all these things we have to check how he comes up tomorrow morning. It just seems nothing more than a little niggle at this stage.”We’ve set a precedent of resting players in the past and I think it’s sensible at times to be able to do that, because of the hectic nature of the international schedule and you don’t want bowlers breaking down for important series,” he added. “But we will only be resting players if we’re absolutely sure they need a rest.”Anderson’s team-mate, Graeme Swann, took a similarly optimistic view when the squad reconvened for practice on Tuesday morning. “I honestly didn’t know he was injured until he told me this morning that he’s not going to play,” said Swann. “I’m sure once he gets running around, he’ll want to play because I know how well he’s bowling at the minute. I know Jimmy. When he’s doing well, he’s hungry for the ball and he just wants to keep going. It’s when he’s not doing so well, he’s more than happy for a week off.”If Anderson is not passed fit, England will have to choose between Onions and Steven Finn, after Chris Tremlett was once again ruled out by the back injury he sustained prior to the second Test at Trent Bridge. It was notable that England’s bowlers were below-par in the one match that Anderson missed, against Sri Lanka at Lord’s, and Strauss admitted that, even with their current fast-bowling resources, he is one player they would rather not do without.”He’s been very much the leader of our attack for the last couple of years and he’s been outstanding in that role,” said Strauss. “But we’ve had to deal with Stuart Broad being injured, Chris Tremlett being injured and people have come in and done well and that’s always the challenge for you as a side – to make sure you’ve got the strength in depth to be able to mitigate against any sort of injury. If and when we have to deal with that, we’ll deal with it.”He’s very important, not just for the tone he sets but for his relationship with the other bowlers,” Strauss added. “But you can’t rely on one person. That’s one of the things that we’ve been good at: we’ve not relied on one or two people to win us a Test match. We’ve had performances from all 11 and when we’re missing a player it’s important the guy coming in can fill that role.””I think [Jimmy] would be a huge loss, like any of the seamers, but we thought that with Tremlett when he couldn’t play at Trent Bridge,” said Swann. “Up stepped Bressie [Tim Bresnan] and he’s been unbelievable in the two games he’s played. We have got vast stocks of fast bowlers at the minute. I’m not sure where they’ve all come from, but it’s nice for us they have all arrived at the same time, because you can never have enough big fast bowlers.”

Infelizmente, o campo prejudicou demais as duas equipes.
