Anderson winning fitness race

England’s spinner Graeme Swann is confident that his team-mate James Anderson will be passed fit in time to face India in the fourth and final Test

James Anderson appears to winning his battle for fitness ahead of the fourth and final Test against India at The Oval on Thursday, after taking a significant part in Wednesday’s practice session. England’s captain, Andrew Strauss, said he was “very optimistic” that Anderson would be available for selection, but said that a final decision on his right quadriceps strain would be taken on the morning of the game.Anderson, who tore through India’s top order with each of the first four wickets to fall in their second innings at Edgbaston, has 18 wickets in the series to date and has risen to No. 2 in the world rankings. However, he complained of stiffness in his thigh after the Edgbaston match, and the Durham paceman, Graham Onions, was called into the squad as cover.Given how valuable Anderson has become as their attack leader, England have already demonstrated a desire to treat him cautiously this summer. He missed the second Test against Sri Lanka earlier in the season as a precaution, having sustained a side strain midway through the opening Test of the summer at Cardiff. This time, however, Strauss seems happier that his star bowler is ready for action. “We are very optimistic he’s fit to play,” he said. “He had a good bowl today, but like all these things we have to check how he comes up tomorrow morning. It just seems nothing more than a little niggle at this stage.”We’ve set a precedent of resting players in the past and I think it’s sensible at times to be able to do that, because of the hectic nature of the international schedule and you don’t want bowlers breaking down for important series,” he added. “But we will only be resting players if we’re absolutely sure they need a rest.”Anderson’s team-mate, Graeme Swann, took a similarly optimistic view when the squad reconvened for practice on Tuesday morning. “I honestly didn’t know he was injured until he told me this morning that he’s not going to play,” said Swann. “I’m sure once he gets running around, he’ll want to play because I know how well he’s bowling at the minute. I know Jimmy. When he’s doing well, he’s hungry for the ball and he just wants to keep going. It’s when he’s not doing so well, he’s more than happy for a week off.”If Anderson is not passed fit, England will have to choose between Onions and Steven Finn, after Chris Tremlett was once again ruled out by the back injury he sustained prior to the second Test at Trent Bridge. It was notable that England’s bowlers were below-par in the one match that Anderson missed, against Sri Lanka at Lord’s, and Strauss admitted that, even with their current fast-bowling resources, he is one player they would rather not do without.”He’s been very much the leader of our attack for the last couple of years and he’s been outstanding in that role,” said Strauss. “But we’ve had to deal with Stuart Broad being injured, Chris Tremlett being injured and people have come in and done well and that’s always the challenge for you as a side – to make sure you’ve got the strength in depth to be able to mitigate against any sort of injury. If and when we have to deal with that, we’ll deal with it.”He’s very important, not just for the tone he sets but for his relationship with the other bowlers,” Strauss added. “But you can’t rely on one person. That’s one of the things that we’ve been good at: we’ve not relied on one or two people to win us a Test match. We’ve had performances from all 11 and when we’re missing a player it’s important the guy coming in can fill that role.””I think [Jimmy] would be a huge loss, like any of the seamers, but we thought that with Tremlett when he couldn’t play at Trent Bridge,” said Swann. “Up stepped Bressie [Tim Bresnan] and he’s been unbelievable in the two games he’s played. We have got vast stocks of fast bowlers at the minute. I’m not sure where they’ve all come from, but it’s nice for us they have all arrived at the same time, because you can never have enough big fast bowlers.”

Infelizmente, o campo prejudicou demais as duas equipes.

Newcastle must brutally axe Joe Willock

Newcastle United will be looking to play their part in the Premier League title race as they face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium today.

The Magpies lost 1-0 to Liverpool last time out and now come up against the reigning champions away from home. A win for the Toon will hand the Reds a major boost in their pursuit of the title and improve their own chances of finishing in the top half.

Eddie Howe’s men had won four consecutive games prior to their clash with Jurgen Klopp’s side and will be hoping to resurrect that form for this meeting with Pep Guardiola.

One player that the 44-year-old must brutally axe from the starting XI is Joe Willock after his disappointing display last week.

Howe must axe Willock

Freddie Ljungberg previously dubbed the midfielder as “passive”, and that is exactly what he was against Liverpool. As per SofaScore, the 22-year-old lost four of his seven duels and only completed seven passes in his 67 minutes on the pitch. He also had just 19 touches and failed in 100% of his attempted dribbles.

In the Premier League this season, he has lost 60% of his aerial battles and 52% of his individual duels. This shows that he has been a lightweight throughout the campaign as he has failed to outmuscle the opposition on a regular basis.

His lack of strength in the middle of the park means that he can be a passenger in games, as he is unable to hold his own weight against teams who use their physique to their advantage. This is why the £80k-per-week dud must be dropped for today’s match, as he would likely be dominated by the Manchester City players.

Rodri has won 69% of his aerial battles and 56% of his duels overall in the top flight. This suggests that the Spaniard will be able to dominate Willock if it comes down to a physical confrontation between the two in the middle of the pitch.

The ex-Arsenal man has also not done enough in possession to make up for his weak play off the ball. He has scored two goals and failed to provide a single assist this season, which means that he has not made enough of an impact in the final third to warrant a start for this particular match-up when his lack of strength could be his downfall.

Hampshire sign de Wet for 2011

South African fast bowler Friedel de Wet has signed a Kolpak contract with Hampshire for the 2011 County season.De Wet, 30, played two Tests for South Africa against England in 2009-10, picking up match figures of 5 for 127 on debut in the drawn Centurion Test.He picked up a stress fracture of the back in the third Test of that series and fell out of national contention, but has remained on the Highveld Lions’ books in domestic cricket. He also has some experience of England conditions as he was signed by Middlesex as a Kolpak player for the 2008 season, playing one game for their second XI before heading to Lancashire for some more second team cricket.”I’m looking forward to playing on the county circuit in the off season, and would like to thank the bizhub Highveld Lions for their support in this endeavor,” said de Wet.

Dwayne Bravo backs T&T youngsters

Dwayne Bravo hopes his and Kieron Pollard’s absence from the Trinidad & Tobago squad for the 2011 Caribbean Twenty20 Championship will give young players a chance to take up the mantle for the side

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Dec-2010

Dwayne Bravo, who plays for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, and Victoria in the Twenty20 Big Bash, will miss the Caribbean Twenty20 Championship•Indian Premier League

Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies allrounder, has said he hopes the absence of himself and hard-hitting batsman Kieron Pollard from the Trinidad & Tobago squad for the 2011 Caribbean T20 event will give young players a chance to take up the mantle for the regional side.Bravo and Pollard have both opted to play in Australia’s Twenty20 Big Bash, which will be played from December 30 to January 5, and will miss their domestic tournament that will be held in Antigua and Barbados from January 10 to 23. Bravo signed for Victoria, while Pollard will play for South Australia.”The decision not to play for T&T was a tough one, as we remain committed to T&T’s cricket,” Bravo told . “However, with Pollard and myself not being there, I hope two young players can step up to the plate and make a name for themselves.”Bravo and Pollard are the most experienced players in the T&T squad, and were key in their successful run in 2008 and 2009, when they won the now defunct Stanford 20/20 and then reached the final of the 2009 Champions League Twenty20.The pair’s decision to skip the domestic event had raised concerns over their commitment to West Indies cricket, but Bravo said they had been encouraged by the support from the T&T Cricket Board. “We felt a lot better by the fact that we got the support of the board and we wish T&T all the best in the tournament. I will be following the exploits of the team very closely from Australia and will be in touch with the team giving my support.”In September, T&T team manager Colin Borde said he believed Bravo and Pollard were both still committed to West Indies cricket, despite their decision not to sign national contracts with the WICB. Bravo’s decision not to sign a contract means he does not have to make himself available to play for West Indies all the time and can play in tournaments such as the Big Bash and the IPL. Bravo and Pollard were both given no-objection certificates to play in the Big Bash by the WICB, however they do run the risk of not being selected to play for West Indies in Twenty20 internationals if the board follows up on their rule of participation in regional competitions being mandatory for national selection in the corresponding format of the game.Bravo pointed out the CT20 was an important tournament for T&T as they had failed to win any trophies in the last year. “I see no reason why T&T cannot go on and win the tournament and make up for the disappointment of the 2010 season. We really did not have a good season and the guys should keep this in mind and got out there and play their hearts out.”

Wolves must complete Dembele transfer

Despite securing a deal for 21-year-old winger Chiquinho in recent days, Wolves still have enough time left in the January transfer window to add some more players to Bruno Lage’s squad as they aim to secure a European place in the Premier League this season.

One potential deal that the Old Gold could look to complete is for Barcelona’s 24-year-old winger Ousmane Dembele, who has been mentioned with a move to Molineux recently with current Wolves winger Adama Traore possibly going in the other direction.

With the Spanish club apparently telling Dembele to leave by the end of the month if he’s not willing to sign a new deal at Camp Nou, this is a situation that Wolves could potentially pounce upon to bring the Frenchman to Molineux for a fresh start away from Barcelona.

Having been compared to a young Cristiano Ronaldo by former Rennes sporting director Mikael Silvestre in terms of his characteristics on the pitch, Dembele has shown throughout his career that he is capable of scoring and setting up goals in a similar vein to the iconic Portuguese attacker. The 24-year-old has scored 53 goals and delivered 50 assists in 208 senior club appearances for Rennes, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona across all competitions.

In addition to his comparison with Ronaldo, the £27m-rated winger has also been the subject of lofty praise from another footballing icon, with Lionel Messi describing his former Barcelona teammate as a “phenomenon” on the pitch.

If Jeff Shi and Wolves see a possibility of being able to secure a financially viable deal for Dembele this month, they should definitely go for it to see if he would be willing to test his game in the Premier League and put what seems to be an unsavoury situation with Barcelona behind him to potentially become Wolves’ own version of Ronaldo.

Given his fairly young age and Traore’s reported intention to leave Molineux, Dembele could also be Wolves’ dream replacement for the Spaniard and offer Lage’s side more of a goal threat going forward, given how Traore has only netted 11 goals in 153 Old Gold appearances across all competitions.

However, with a significant injury record against his name, this could potentially put off Wolves or any other club considering a move for Dembele from actually doing so.
