Barnsley: Stendel must do all he can to keep Woodrow at Oakwell in the summer

When Kieffer Moore was ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury in February, Barnsley supporters must have been concerned about whether the club had another attacking prowess to maintain their battle for promotion in League One.

However, in the absence of the 26-year-old, another forward has well and truly stepped up to the mark for the Tykes. Cauley Woodrow moved to Oakwell last summer from Fulham yet had to wait until November to make his debut for his new side after facing a spell on the sidelines. Despite this early setback, the England Under-21 international has gone from strength to strength for Barnsley as he has fired in 15 league goals with four of those coming in his last five games for the club.

A deadly finisher, Woodrow (valued at a fairly decent £675k by Transfermarkt) has carried on where Moore left off and with just two games left to play this season, he could prove to be the difference for the Tykes in the race for the top-two this season. Daniel Stendel’s side are currently second in the standings and hold a two-point lead over Portsmouth and a four-point advantage over Sunderland. Although the South Yorkshire-based outfit are in a great position to secure an immediate return to the Championship after one year away, both of their rivals still have a game in hand over them.

Regardless of whether Barnsley secure promotion, it is overwhelmingly clear that they cannot let Woodrow leave in the summer. With the forward being in impressive form in recent games, it would not be surprising if he attracts interest from elsewhere when the transfer window opens in July and so it is paramount that Stendel resists any temptation to sell him.

In the form of Woodrow and Moore, the Tykes have a strike-force that has the potential to thrive at a higher level than League One and so in order to keep the club on track for a bright future, they must keep the foundations of what is already a successful squad of players in place.

What do you think Barnsley fans? How impressed have you been with Woodrow this season? How important is it that you keep him at the club next season? Let us know below…

Pundit view: Redknapp lives up to ‘proper football man’ image with West Ham assertion

[ad_pod ]

Harry Redknapp claims modern players are to blame for West Ham United’s failings, per the Daily Star.

The Hammers have been in inconsistent form this season and sit ninth in the Premier League table, having won two and lost two of their last four outings.

What’s he said?

Redknapp believes that there is a lack of “love” for the club among modern players.

Indeed, he claims he does not know “half the players there anymore”, before veering perilously close to dangerous territory by claiming the club is filled with “foreign imports”.

Asked about why West Ham have been flattering to deceive, he told the Star: “It’s hard to put your finger on it, I don’t know. It’s a difficult one, I don’t know who the characters are, who the leaders are at the football clubs. It’s a changing world.

“I’ll be honest I don’t even know half the players there anymore [at West Ham]. They seem to have lots of foreign imports in and then go.

“[Mark] Noble’s the only one I really find I can relate to there, he’s a West Ham boy through and through. He’s a massive part of the club.

“It’s a changing world, I look back all them years ago when everybody at West Ham came from within four or five miles of the ground. It’s all local boys, all love the club, want to play for the club.

“Now players tend to go and drift off. It seems every time we get a real player, we get [Dimitri] Payet, he comes and then suddenly he wants to leave.”

Proper football man

Redknapp is perhaps the last bastion of proper football men.

His claim that West Ham’s squad is filled with foreign players who care little about the club should give you some idea about which way he voted in the Brexit referendum of 2016.

This is an old-fashioned belief that has precious little tethering to reality.

Manchester City, for example, had four main English players last season: Kyle Walker, John Stones, Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph.

There were, by comparison, the same amount of Brazilian players. City picked up 100 points.

West Ham are not expecting to do that, of course, but Redknapp is merely disguising a lack of research behind a nationalistic ideal that no longer holds up in 2019.

Quite frankly, he’s wrong.

Aubameyang and Lacazette will be desperate for Arsenal to sign Suso this summer

Arsenal have been so exciting to watch at times this season with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette continuing to deliver in attack.

However, with Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey no longer automatic starters, away from the two forwards, there is not really another player in the Gunners’ starting XI who is capable of conjuring up something from nothing or out of nowhere.

That could be about to change next season, though, with Arsenal said to be lining up a move for AC Milan attacker Suso.

The Breakdown

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Daily Mirror), the 25-year-old was watched by a scout from the north London club in his side’s recent win over Chievo in what can only be described as a positive development for Unai Emery.

While Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have been decent in recent weeks, as previously mentioned, Arsenal need someone who can help out Aubameyang and Lacazette in attack consistently — and Suso might just be that man.

On top of having the sort of vision and passing that can make life easier for forwards such as Aubameyang and Lacazette, Suso can be a goal threat himself.

The Spain international is great coming off that right-hand side before bending a shot towards goal with his dangerous left foot.

Simply put, Suso is a player who can make something happen when his side need a moment of magic. The former Liverpool man has that X-factor and would be a signing who could get supporters at the Emirates off their feet.

Newcastle fans react to reports of Leicester appointing Rodgers

[ad_pod ]

Leicester City have chosen to appoint Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers as Claude Puel’s successor, as confirmed by the club’s official website.

The Bhoys boss has returned to English football for the first time since 2015, when he left Liverpool.

News of Rodgers’ appointment comes about after reports that Rafael Benitez was also under consideration.

The Newcastle United manager is attempting to steer the Magpies away from the relegation zone and they are currently 15th in the Premier League, four points clear of 18th-placed Southampton.

Ironically, the club are also just four points behind the Foxes, who dispensed with Puel after a 4-1 loss to Crystal Palace at the weekend.

But fans of the Magpies insist that they were never worried that Benitez would depart St James’ Park in the middle of the season, with Rodgers foregoing the chance to win his third successive SPL title in Glasgow to take the reins at the King Power Stadium.

When The Chronicle revealed earlier in the day that Rodgers was set to take the job, Newcastle fans responded by claiming there was never any need to panic…

Manchester City can improve their squad in the summer with signing of 21-year-old striker

Manchester City are hitting the right form at the right time of the season as they look to usurp Liverpool at the top of the table.

Pep Guardiola’s men are playing some scintillating football, and smashed another four past Newport in the FA Cup today to keep that trophy hunt alive and well too.

However, the January window passed without much action for City, and we here in the Tavern feel the summer is going to be a big one for the club as they look to bring in some new faces.

There are a few positions which could do with adding too in he City squad, especially up front, where Sergio Aguero continues to bare the brunt of the goalscoring burden through the middle.

That’s why we think Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez might well be one of the long term answers available to City and Guardiola if they do indeed choose to make their move for a new forward in either this window or the next.

The 21-year-old only made his move to Europe in the summer, but has already shown enough to suggest he could go on to become a big hit at the right club.

Martinez has all the attributes to be a class act in his career, and the chance to come and work with the likes of Guardiola and Aguero while he is in his prime, might well prove to be a match made in heaven and a chance the player simply cannot turn down.

City fans, what do you think? Would this be a good long term signing? Let us know in the comments!

Dean Smith may have just seen Jack Grealish’s replacement in Ebere Eze

Aston Villa and their promotion hopes were pegged back on New Year’s Day as QPR picked up an impressive point away at Villa Park but there may be a silver lining to the cloud – Dean Smith may have just seen the potentially out-going Jack Grealish’s replacement in the flesh in Ebere Eze.

On the chalkboard

Well, despite recently signing a new long-term deal that will keep him in claret and blue for another five years after the club insisted he wasn’t for sale, Grealish will surely want out in the summer should his side fail to win Premier League football for next season.

Spurs unsuccessfully offered £25m for the 23-year-old back in August and have turned their attention to Jarrod Bowen this month with Grealish currently sidelined through injury but, regardless, there will undoubtedly be no shortage of suitors for the academy graduate should he seek an exit in six months’ time.

Currently four points shy of a coveted play-off spot, the Villans would have hoped for more from their first match of 2019 but Eze’s performance may have put him on Smith’s radar.

Too Eze

The 20-year-old was impressive for the Hoops as he bagged a goal and took on 5 shots on the way to a well deserved point but it’s surely his effectiveness in playing off the striker and linking the frontline to the midfield that will have got Smith thinking.

Grealish excels in such a role and the Midlands outfit look much less potent when he doesn’t play. Often used as a winger as well as an attacking midfielder, the Villa number 10 shares more than just a shirt number with Eze – WhoScored lists dribbling and ball retention among both’s strengths.

On paper the young Nigerian looks a carbon copy of Grealish and he could be an ideal replacement should the Villa man leave. What do you think, Villa fans? Do you think Eze would be a good fit? Let us know by voting in the poll below…

HYS: Who should be the backup to Matt Phillips at right wing-back for West Brom?

Matt Phillips has missed the last three West Brom fixtures with a muscle strain and 35-year-old Tyrone Mears has struggled as his replacement, meaning Darren Moore must promote youngster Kyle Edwards to be Phillips’ backup for the rest of the season.

Mears started the 4-1 win over Reading on Saturday, but was dragged off by the Baggies boss after an hour with the scores still at 1-1. Edwards was his replacement and the 20-year-old gave his side far more attacking threat as they netted three times to win the game convincingly.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”304908″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Spurs’ Impressive Run & A Premier League First”]

Edwards has been used in a number of positions by the Baggies including at left-wing, central attacking midfield and at right wing-back. Like Phillips though he seems to be a forward who has taken well to the wing-back role and could excel with more game time.

The West Brom academy graduate will be hoping that after the international break he is given the chance to impress if Phillips is still on the injury list at the Hawthorns.

So, West Brom fans, do you think Edwards should be the back-up to Phillips or has Mears done enough so far?

Manchester City should hijack Bayern’s move for German wonderkid Jann-Fiete Arp

Manchester City have completed their first significant transfer deal of the summer – spending £60m on Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez.

Pep Guardiola was a huge admirer of the Algerian and attempted to bring him to Manchester last January. The Citizens were ultimately priced out of a move at the time and dropped their interest. Guardiola reignited the transfer when the summer window opened and the 2016 PFA Player of the Year finally made the switch official on Tuesday evening.

The Spaniard said he wanted two major signings as City look to retain their title. Mahrez was one, and Napoli’s Jorginho was expected to be the second before Chelsea stole a march at the final hour. The ex-Barcelona must now switch his attention to building for the future and land one of the most promising youngsters in world football – Jann-Fiete Arp.

Valued at £6.75m by Transfermarkt, Arp is considered the hottest prospect emerging through Germany’s youth system. He played 18 league games for Hamburg last season, scoring three goals, but couldn’t prevent his side being relegated. His goal record for the U17 is phenomenal – Arp netted 37 goals in 45 appearances.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, and reports suggest Bayern Munich have agreed on terms with the youngster. The Bavarians are yet to settle a fee with Hamburg for their prized asset meaning the race is not over for signature and City should attempt to bring him to the Premier League.

With Arp and Gabriel Jesus up front, their attack is complete for the next decade.

Manchester City fans, thoughts?

Odds slashed as Eric Dier nears Manchester United move

Manchester United tend to get the players they want under the Jose Mourinho regime. During his first summer at Old Trafford the former Chelsea manager landed all four of the names he handed to chief executive Ed Woodward, and it looks as if it could be the same story this summer.

Having already brought in both Victor Lindelof and Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, the Special One is now looking to bolster his midfield, and the club seem to be closing in on one of their top targets.

After reports from the Manchester Evening News claiming that Tottenham’s Eric Dier is keen on a move to Old Trafford, the odds have been slashed to 7/4 on Sky Bet for the England international to be a Red Devil come the close of the summer window.

The £21.25m-rated former Sporting Lisbon man, who has excelled under the guise of Mauricio Pochettino, lost his favoured defensive midfield slot at Spurs last season due to the form of both Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama.

With Mourinho looking to find a natural successor to the newly named captain Michael Carrick, Dier would surely be assured of a midfield role in Manchester.
