Ed Cowan and Travis Birt continued Tasmania’s undefeated run in the Ryobi Cup by setting up a 72-run victory over New South Wales, who were on top at the halfway mark. In the second block, Cowan and Birt combined for a 172-run partnership that drove the Tigers to 286 for 7, before the spin of Jason Krejza and Xavier Doherty sank the Blues.New South Wales remained in the contest while Phil Jaques was at the crease but when he was trapped lbw by Doherty for 95, it sparked a collapse. The Blues lost their last seven wickets for 30 as Krejza spun the ball sharply and varied his pace to finish with 3 for 55, while Doherty was equally impressive with 3 for 35.It was a surprising turnaround after Jaques and Brad Haddin (56) earned a point for the Blues by taking them to 1 for 91 after the first block, well ahead of Tasmania’s 3 for 76. But the partnership between Cowan and Birt changed everything; Cowan anchored the innings with sensible strokeplay while Birt provided the muscle.Birt’s 87 from 62 balls featured five sixes and it took a classic Brett Lee yorker to halt his push for a hundred. Cowan was not prevented from reaching the mark, although he survived a strange incident on 74 when he was given caught behind off Stuart Clark and reprieved when Haddin said he was unsure if the ball had carried.Replays showed the catch was clean but the umpires are not permitted to refer such takes to the TV official, and it allowed Cowan to compile his highest one-day score. He finished unbeaten on 131 and saw the ball so well that in the final over he reverse-paddled a fullish Lee delivery to third man for a boundary.Tasmania, the defending champions, sit on top of the table with three wins from three games, proving themselves equally adept at the new split-innings format. New South Wales have won just one of their three matches.

Glamorgan fight to even-up contest

ScorecardBad light and rain meant just 45 overs were bowled on day two of the County Championship Division Two clash between Surrey and Glamorgan at The Oval, which ended with the visitors on 72 for 2. Surrey had earlier been bowled out for 380, but their hopes of making significant inroads on the visitors batting line-up was frustrated by the weather.Nine overs were possible before lunch, during which time Surrey added 19 runs for the loss of Gareth Batty, who was bowled playing across the line to Jim Allenby. Chris Schofield’s first Championship half-century of the season, which came off 107 balls, arrived shortly after lunch. At the other end, Chris Tremlett gave a hint that the home side were on course for all five batting points when he reeled off two successive straight driven fours off Huw Waters. But with the seamers gaining assistance from the cloud cover as well as the second new ball, James Harris and Allenby polished off the last three Surrey wickets in the space of 32 deliveries. Tremlett was brilliantly caught in front of first slip by Mark Wallace.Having just driven Harris to the point boundary to move to 63, Schofield then lost his off stump trying to work the 20-year-old seamer through wide mid-on. Three overs later, Stuart Meaker was the last Surrey man to go, caught behind off Allenby.Facing a follow-on target of 231, the Glamorgan lost Gareth Rees in the seventh over of their reply when he was trapped on the crease by Tremlett, though not before he had worked the former England and Hampshire fast bowler down to the rope at deep-backward square-leg for four.Tremlett, who looked back to his best, and Jade Dernbach gave Mark Cosgrove ample opportunity have a nibble down the leg-side, but the 26-year-old Australian refused to take the bait. Instead, Cosgrove opted to violently despatch anything wide of his off stump to the cover boundary until, in the 12th over, a moment of indecision resulted in him being bowled by Meaker. At tea, the visitors were 55 for 2, but only further 19 balls were possible before the heavens opened, putting paid to any more action. In that time, however, Jamie Dalrymple and Ben Wright gave Glamorgan hope of getting back into the match with an unbeaten stand of 34.

Expert hints at Neves leaving Wolves

Wolves could be a victim of their own success if they lose star midfielder Ruben Neves this summer, according to transfer expert Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Neves a wanted man

The Portuguese maestro has found his best form again this season after a dip in 2020/21, playing a big role in Wanderers pushing for European football.

Neves’ performances have reportedly caught the eye of a number of top clubs, however, with a summer exit from Molineux far from out of the question.

The 24-year-old, who has picked up nine Premier League bookings this season, will see his current Wolves deal expire in the summer of 2024.

[freshpress-poll id=“388780″]

The Latest: Expert makes key assessment

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones claimed that Wolves’ brilliance this season could ironically lead to them losing Neves:

“It is the price of success when your players are wanted by bigger clubs.

“As soon as you’re rising like Wolves have been, you’re always going to get to a point at some stage where teams start picking off your best players.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“388797″]

The Verdict: Hard to call

There is no denying that Wolves’ form under Bruno Lage and Neves’ own performances have played a part in raising his profile, but that is the brutal nature of football.

Unless you are one of the very biggest clubs in the world, there is always the risk that your star men excelling with eventually see them earn a move elsewhere, as happened with Diogo Jota, for example.

It is certainly easy to see the same occurring with Neves, and while it would be devastating to lose such a talented player at this stage of his career, it would be hard to begrudge him a move to one of Europe’s leading teams.

There is still hope that he will extend his stay at Molineux, though, which is something that has to be priority number one off the pitch in the coming weeks and months.

In other news, Jones has also dropped a key claim regarding another Wolves player. Read more here.

Harmison's seven routs Warwickshire

Steve Harmison demolished the Warwickshire batting this morning, taking six ofthe seven remaining wickets as Durham wrapped up their third win of the seasonin 10.2 overs

ScorecardSteve Harmison demolished the Warwickshire batting this morning, taking six ofthe seven remaining wickets as Durham wrapped up their third win of the seasonin 10.2 overs. No Durham bowler had previously taken five wickets in a championship inningsthis season, but Harmison finished with 7 for 29, his best county figures,as Warwickshire crumbled from their overnight 111 for 3 to 134 all out in 50minutes.The visitors’ sixth defeat heightened their relegation worries, while Durhamclimbed two places to fifth. Having been 55 points behind Nottinghamshire whenthey lost at Trent Bridge in May they now have the gap down to 19, although theleaders have a game in hand.Harmison’s haul took him past 700 first-class wickets, of which 423 have beenfor Durham. Having missed four of their previous seven games this season withback and ankle injuries, he had only nine championship wickets going into thismatch.Jim Troughton turned the first ball of the day comfortably through mid-wicketfor three, then six wickets went down for six runs. In the day’s third over Harmison had 18-year-old Ateeq Javid lbw for 30, then in the next over Mitch Claydon moved one off the pitch to take out Troughton’soff stump and remove him for 43.Harmison did the rest, all the victims being caught at the wicket or in theslips apart from Boyd Rankin, who was well held by Mark Stoneman at short leg. Andrew Miller batted with a runner because of his foot injury and helped the unbeaten Rikki Clarke put on 14 for the last wicket.

Journalist shares big Ndombele exit update

According to Daily Mail reporter Sami Mokbel, Antonio Conte believed he could turn Tanguy Ndombele’s Tottenham career around, but that is now no longer the case.

The Lowdown: Ndombele booed off…

The club record signing has been at the centre of reports linking him with a move away from Spurs after he was booed off during the Lilywhites’ 3-1 FA Cup third round win over Morecambe.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ndombele slowly walked off the pitch and headed straight down the tunnel, drawing the wrath of Tottenham’s home supporters as he refused to vacate the pitch with any real haste.

The Frenchman, among other players who could potentially leave, has his future up in the air under manager Antonio Conte with the Spurs head coach now making a major decision behind-the-scenes.

The Latest: Conte performs Ndombele U-turn…

According to Mail reporter Mokbel, the former Chelsea manager is ‘no longer convinced’ by Tottenham’s midfield man despite originally thinking he could ‘get a tune’ out of the player.

In his report, the journalist explains that Conte ‘had originally planned for Ndombele to stay at the club’ but is now ‘ready to cut his losses’ this month – greenlighting his January exit.

The Verdict: For the best?

Averaging more completed dribbles per 90 than any Spurs player in the Premier League last season (WhoScored) whilst proving his undoubted ability in flashes, doubts have mostly surrounded his application and attitude.

On a reported £200,000-per-week, one of the club’s highest earners, chairman Daniel Levy and managing director Fabio Paratici could be looking for ways to cut the club’s expenses and fund much-needed new additions by offloading Ndombele this month.

If a willing buyer comes in, it would arguably be foolish of Tottenham not to entertain selling before January 31 and indeed cut their losses on a player who has already been given time to prove his worth.

Key props up Kent with mammoth 261

Robert Key scored the third double century of his first-class career to ensure fellow County Championship strugglers Durham endured atough opening day in Canterbury

Cricinfo staff17-May-2010
Scorecard
Kent captain Robert Key scored the third double century of his first-classcareer to ensure fellow County Championship strugglers Durham endured atough opening day in Canterbury. The 31-year-old former Test batsman maintained his concentration levels despite short breaks for rain either side of lunch and throughout four excellent spells from former England team-mate Steve Harmison to make 261.Without his knock – which included 38 fours and three sixes across six hours at the crease – Kent would have struggled but instead made 424 all out by stumps. The right-handed opener, who came into the game with a paltry championshipaverage of 14.3 this season, featured in century stands for the third and fifth wickets and hardly played a false shot during his 270-ball stay. His only fortunate boundary came from a top-edged pull that sailed over thekeeper’s head against Harmison who, with 4 for 52, was easily the pick ofDurham’s injury-hit attack.”It was good fun and a long time due,” said Key, after missing out on a career-best score by only 10 runs. “After the poor start I’ve had to the season I probably owe the team some runs and it’s nice to get a decent score under my belt.”Batting first after winning the toss, Key lost opening partner Joe Denly toonly the sixth ball of the day from Harmison, caught behind without scoring when fishing at a legcutter. Then, in Harmison’s next over, Geraint Jones fenced away from his body to steer a catch to Michael Di Venuto at second slip to make it 10 for 2.Martin van Jaarsveld helped Key see off Harmison’s first spell after whichKent’s third-wicket partners began to take the initiative, posting 117 in 25 overs either side of lunch while Durham used seven bowlers in a bid to stem the flow.Van Jaarsveld (30) went five balls after the re-start when his leaden-footed drive against Harmison was snaffled at the second attempt by Dale Benkenstein at slip. Then, four overs later, Sam Northeast became Harmison’s fourth victim after nicking another leg-cutter to new Durham captain Phil Mustard.Key moved to his first century of the summer from 105 balls and found another willing ally in Azhar Mahmood (43) to take Kent to their first batting point with a partnership of 106 in 23 overs. They were only two short of equalling Kent’s fifth-wicket record against Durham when Mahmood edged to slip off Benkenstein.Useful contributions from Alex Blake (31) and Rob Ferley (19) helped Key bat on past tea and pass Ed Smith’s 175 scored at the Riverside in 2000 – the previous best by a Kent batsman against Durham.Key posted his second double hundred for Kent inside 10 months from 223 balls and with 30 fours, but soon after Durham’s Chris Rushworth nipped out Ferley and Simon Cook in the space of three deliveries with the second new ball.Typically, Key countered by hooking the same bowler for a brace of sixes but Rushworth should have had his man caught at midwicket for 233. Benkenstein inexplicably downed a sitter, allowing Key to plunder 18 from the over. The Kent opener fell in the final over of the day only 15 shy of the groundrecord score by a Kent batsman when he was bowled around his legs by BenHarmison attempting an audacious clip to fine leg.

Southampton weigh Aribo move

As per reliable reporter Scott Burns, writing for the Scottish Daily Express, some news has come to light on Southampton’s transfer plans for January involving Rangers star Joe Aribo.

The Lowdown: Semmens eyeing winter moves?

As the winter window looms, Southampton chief Martin Semmens, who oversees the club’s transfer activity, has already hinted that the Saints could be active business-wise as he aims to bolster manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s chances of Premier League survival.

Sitting just six points above the drop zone, Hasenhuttl’s men will potentially be looking to strengthen if the right opportunity arises, with links emerging to a few names like Angers wonderkid Mohamed-Ali Cho.

Now, as per an update from north of the border, another claim has emerged on the Saints’ transfer plans.

The Latest: Semmens eyeing Aribo bid…

According to Burns, Southampton, and by extension Semmens, are ‘weighing up a move’ for Gers star Aribo and they even had a representative sent to watch him in action at the weekend.

Standing out for the Teddy Bears this season, Southampton already have a number of reports on the midfielder as they keep tabs on his situation ahead of January.

The Verdict: Time to move?

The 25-year-old has been one of Rangers’ players of the season so far, making more SPFL appearances than anyone in their squad so far whilst averaging the second-highest rate of dribbles completed per 90 and scoring the second-most goals (WhoScored).

His contract is also expiring in 18 months, putting some pressure on the Ibrox side to contemplate a sale while they still can.

The Nigeria international, lauded as ‘red hot’ by pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor for his form this season, could well be an astute purchase for Southampton if they can negotiate a realistic price.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka will cross a new frontier when they meet each other in three Twenty20 internationals in the USA in May.The games will take place at Central Broward Regional Park Cricket Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida, which has been approved by the ICC. It is the first time two Full Members will have met in an official match on US soil and it follows the signing of a strategic partnership between the USA Cricket Association (USACA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) last year.”Given the door to cricket has been opened to investment through the sale of Indian Premier League franchises, this model is a logical step to raising the capital required to take cricket in the US to another level,” said Justin Vaughan, NZC’s chief executive. “The structure proposed is a wonderful opportunity for someone to get in on the ground floor, particularly given the growing level of interest in the US cricket market.”A delighted Don Lockerbie, CEO of USACA, said the move was the first of what he hoped would be many such initiatives, adding the US national side would participate in some warm-up matches as well.”We are experiencing increasing demand for ‘Destination USA’ cricket events from many Full Member ICC countries and the Sri Lanka v New Zealand series will bring – as forecasted – world-class cricket to the USA,” he said. “Through the strategic collaboration with NZC we now have the additional administrative support and knowledge base to be able to commercialise these opportunities and ultimately grow the revenue streams from one of the world’s largest advertising markets.”Looking ahead, Lockerbie added the matches were “a small indication of the amount of cricket content under consideration with our partners at NZC. We will be meeting with potential investors and event developers over the next few weeks and months to keep building our momentum. The interest is already high from potential investors in India and the US, and this is very encouraging.”

Wolves fans love club’s Raul Jimenez post

Some Wolves supporters have been sharing their joy over the progress Raul Jimenez has made one year after suffering a life-threatening head injury.

On 29 November 2020, the Mexican was stretchered off against Arsenal in the Premier League, having suffered a hugely serious injury.

Not only were there doubts over Jimenez playing football again after fracturing his skull, but the severity of the issue was also life-threatening.

Thankfully, the 30-year-old has made a wonderful comeback over the past 12 months, taking to the field once more and remaining a vital player for Wolves. This season, Jimenez has scored three times and registered two assists in the league, helping Bruno Lage’s side to sixth place in the table currently.

On Monday, Wolves’ official Twitter channel posted a touching tribute to the striker showing the remarkable progress he has made over the past year.
