Vlahovic really wants to join Spurs

According to a report by Italian news outlet Fanta Calcio, Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic ‘really’ wants to join Tottenham Hotspur – with the Lilywhites already tabling an offer.

The Lowdown: Vlahovic on the radar…

The Serbian powerhouse has been heavily linked to Tottenham over these last few weeks, with reliable reports from the Times detailing Spurs have held talks over him.

Vlahovic is a valuable commodity all over Europe after a head-turning Serie A campaign as Spurs eye his signature alongside the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United from the Premier League (TUTTOmercatoWEB).

The Latest: Vlahovic eyeing Spurs…

As per Fanta Calcio, the 21-year-old ‘really’ likes Spurs and the Lilywhites have now tabled a €40 million (£34.1m) offer for his services.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-2/” title=”Tottenham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, Fiorentina executives have rejected their bid and will only sell for around €60m (£51.1m), with this report claiming to ‘watch out’ for next week as Vlahovic’s future in Serie A could be decided ‘in a few days’.

Tottenham apparently see the 6 foot 3 striker as a replacement for superstar Harry Kane and are trying to convince Fiorentina to sell, so much so that Fabio Paratici and co have apparently been ‘pressing’ for weeks.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Even though Spurs have had their initial £34.1m offer rejected, we urge Paratici to come back with a bid far closer to the valuation.

Lauded as a ‘phenomenon’ by former Italy international Antonio Di Natale (Rtv38 via TMW), he notched an incredible 21 goals and three assists in 34 Serie A starts over 2020/2021 (WhoScored).

At just 21-years-old, a figure around £51.1m is arguably a steal in the long term if he develops further after last season, but of course Tottenham’s precarious finances will be a factor determining this move.

If Paratici can negotiate a compromise fee, Vlahovic would come as a sensational signing.

Bayern chasing Villa’s Sinisalo

A major update has emerged on Villa goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, regarding interest from Bayern Munich and Celtic.

What’s the talk?

According to the Sunday People (20/6; page 56), Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Celtic are all interested in signing Aston Villa goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo. The 19-year-old is heading into the final year of his contract and all three European giants are looking to potentially snap him up for a cut-price deal.

The report claims that Villa want to tie him down to an extended contract in an attempt to keep him at the club in the long term. Sinisalo’s intentions are not clear at this time and it remains to be seen if he wants to commit his future to Dean Smith’s side.

Back in Ocotber 2020, Ayr United boss Mark Kerr hailed the “athletic” shot-stopper for his ability to read the game and make important saves. He told Not The Old Firm:

“Viljami did well. I had contact with an agent who deals with goalkeepers down in England. He gave us a list of five. We thought Viljami looked athletic, he can get across the goal and he reads things.

“He made some great saves today, that’s what you need.”

Fans would be fuming

Villa fans would be fuming if the club allows Sinisalo to leave this summer to join Bayern, Celtic or Leipzig. Allowing a talented young player to depart on a cut-price deal, or free, because the club have failed to pin him down to a contract extension could be a bitter blow.

Losing a promising talent for any reason is frustrating, but to do so whilst potentially not even receiving a transfer blow would be even worse as Villa would not receive worthwhile compensation for their loss.

The teenager enjoyed an impressive season on loan at Ayr in Scotland. He kept nine clean sheets and conceded 39 goals in 29 appearances for the club, suggesting that he already has the quality to compete at that level despite only turning 19 last October.

Therefore, he could have the potential to be an important player for Villa in the future, which is why the club could be facing a disaster if they do not get him to commit himself to the club this summer as they could watch a prospect walk out of the door.

Emi Martinez turns 29 in September and the Argentine shot-stopper will be well into his 30’s by the time Sinisalo turns 24/25 and begins to prepare himself to be a long-term number one option at Premier League level.

This means that the Finnish goalkeeper could be the ideal successor to Martinez at Villa Park if he plays his cards right over the next few years. This is another reason why NSWE need to avoid making a mistake with Sinisalo in the coming months.

Myers reveals latest on EFC manager race

Everton fans shouldn’t expect their new manager to be appointed ‘until at least next week’, according toÂAlan Myers.

The lowdown

Everton have been a without a manager since the start of the month, when Carlo Ancelotti left to join Real Madrid.

It was reported this week that Rafael Benitez, the former manager of local rivals Liverpool, was in ‘prime position’ to be offered the job.

Benitez, who’s also had spells at Chelsea and Newcastle United, has held three rounds of talks with the club.

But some Blues fans have expressed their anger at the potential appointment, with protest banners displayed outside Goodison Park.

The latest

Myers has warned Everton fans that the wait is set to be prolonged with the Toffees considering a huge numberÂof candidates for the position.

Six of those are named: Benitez, Nuno Espirito Santo, Christophe Galtier, Eddie Howe, former boss Roberto Martinez and assistant coach Duncan Ferguson.

‘At this point’, the job has not formally been offered to any of those individuals.

The verdict

The delay is a problem. The transfer window opened on 9 June, and with every day that goes by, the task of preparing for the new season becomes that little bit trickier.

But more than that, it’s the sense of uncertainty and of a lack of direction that will be worrying both Everton fans and players – the last thing a squad lacking in confidence needs is to show up for pre-season without a leader.

You need only look at the huge variety in the list of names to realise that the club simply aren’t sure what they want from their new manager, and that Ancelotti’s exit has left them in disarray.

In other news, fans bemoaned this star’s potential exit.ÂÂ

Deane tells Blades to keep Bogle

Brian Deane has told The Transfer Tavern that his former side Sheffield United should keep young defender Jayden Bogle at the club.

Just weeks after suffering relegation with the Blades, the 20-year-old is reportedly being offered an immediate return to the Premier League by new boys Norwich City.

Bogle joined from Derby County last summer but didn’t make the squad in any of Sheffield United’s opening 13 matches, only making his debut as a substitute at Brighton just before Christmas.

But having scored on his league debut in that very game, Bogle became a regular under Chris Wilder and netted his second of the campaign in February’s victory over West Brom, making 16 league appearances in total.

And Deane, who notched more than 100 times across two spells for the Yorkshire outfit, including the first ever Premier League goal, believes that selling Bogle would be pointless, knowing they’d have to buy a similar replacement.

He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“I’d be surprised if Sheffield United sold him because you have to start basing how you want your squad to develop on youth, and he’s in that category.

“He did well in a short space of time. It wouldn’t make much sense to sell him, because then they would have to go out and find the next Jayden Bogle, so I would be surprised.”

Dwight Gayle may still leave Newcastle

Chronicle Live journalist Mark Douglas says he could still see Dwight Gayle leaving Newcastle United this summer.

The lowdown

The Athletic reported at the end of March that Newcastle had committed Gayle to a new three-year contract.

Gayle has a prolific track record, with 103 career goals to his name, but his involvement has been limited this season.

The Englishman has played only 503 Premier League minutes, albeit having missed the first 10 matches of the season with an MCL injury (via Transfermarkt).

His one and only goal in 2020/21 came against former club West Bromwich Albion as he came off the bench to net an 82nd-minute winner at St James’ Park.

Manager Steve Bruce nonetheless regards Gayle as a ‘natural goalscorer’ and says he is ‘invaluable’ to the squad.

The latest

Douglas was asked in a fan Q&A what areas Newcastle need to target this summer.

He said that a player of Joe Willock’s ilk is clearly necessary, as well as ‘defensive reinforcements’.

But he also thinks that proper back-up for Callum Wilson will be required, revealing that he believes Gayle will depart despite signing that new deal.

The verdict

This is a surprising comment from Douglas, given that Newcastle had seemingly tied Gayle down for the exact purpose of providing support for Wilson.

One has to wonder if the new deal was a means of protecting his transfer value with a view to a summer sale.

There would likely be plentiful interest in the 30-year-old from the Championship given his devastating record in the second tier, so perhaps cashing in to reinvest in a more top-flight proven player was always the plan.

Sacked Sri Lankan board chief threatens Sports Minister

Sacked Sri Lankan cricket board President, Thilanga Sumathipala, has demanded a public apology from the Sports Minister and threatened legal action for defamatory comments made in the aftermatch of the cricket boards dissolution

CricInfo27-Apr-2001Thilanga Sumathipala, the head of the recently sacked Sri Lankan cricket board, has demanded a public apology from the Sports Minister, Lakshman Kiriella, for comments made in the aftermath of the cricket board’s dissolution. He has also threatened a US $5 million defamatory suit if no apology is forthcoming within two weeks.Speaking to the media at the Jaic Hilton last night Sumathipala said that the Minister had, “repeatedly made several knowingly false and misleading statements, which have caused grave embarrassment and defamed the integrity of myself and my Executive Committee. I expect a public apology to clear my name.”With the cricket board crisis scheduled to return to the Court of Appeal on the 4th May, a public apology is unlikely to be forthcoming. The board was dissolved on the basis of a procedural technicality and, to date, there is no evidence of serious financial wrongdoing by the Sumathipala-led board. An apology would represent a tacit admission that the board was wound up without due reason.Sumathipala, who claimed that he would not stand in the next AGM because of the, “politicisation of the board was not going to help me or Sri Lankan cricket,” was in a bullish mood last night, claiming that “no one is above the law and the cricket board belongs to the membership, not the to the Ministry. Moreover, he believes that Lakshmann Kiriella has made some legal blunders in the past few weeks.According to Sumathipala the board was not wound up in the proper manner, making those involved liable for prosecution. More seriously, he argued that its dissolution means that it can no longer function as an organisation.”The Honourable Minister has made a mistake that jeopardises Sri Lanka’s membership of the International Cricket Council (ICC),” he explained. “The board was dissolved, not suspended, as was the case last time. This means the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka no longer exists as a legal entity.”If the legal system agrees with Sumathipala’s interpretation, then the consequences are far-reaching. All contracts with the BCCSL, including the record television deal, would logically all cease to exist, bank accounts would have to be frozen, and board employees are out of a job. Moreover, Sri Lankan cricket would no longer be represented within the ICC and full membership could be revoked.Whilst the possible consequences of the board’s dissolution are grave according to Sumathipala, a common sense solution is surely likely to prevail, especially with such strong political support for the board’s dissolution. Sports Ministry lawyers will be trying to work through the quagmire to identify a legally acceptable solution and the ICC could be requested to recognise the Interim Committee, as Sri Lanka’s sole governing body of cricket.Nevertheless, the way forward is complicated. What, for example, is to be done about the fact that despite the board’s dissolution Sumathipala remains an Executive Director of the ICC? As David Richards, the Chief Executive of the ICC, said in a recent letter to Anura Tennekoon: “As I understand corporate law, a person once nominated as a director remains in that position until he either resigns or is formally replaced by the organisation which appointed him.”His formal replacement is impossible if the BCCSL no longer exists, but Vijaya Malalsekera, the Chairman of the Interim Committee, has been nominated as Sri Lanka’s representative in the ICC’s Annual General Meeting in June. It is unclear as to whether the ICC, which is corporate body now and therefore has to abide by its own Memorandum and Articles of Association, will accept Malalsekera as the official Sri Lankan representative. The Interim Committee will meet the media tonight for the first time since their appointment and the legal status of the board will be high on the agenda of the journalists present. But they are likely to be tightlipped on this issue, as next Thursday the Sumathipala team will challenge both the dissolution and the appointment of an Interim Committee in the Court of Appeal. The lawyers, it seems, will be the greatest beneficiaries of the latest controversy to rock Sri Lankan cricket.

Arsenal fans rejoice as Kroenkes could sell

Many Arsenal fans have been buzzing at the news from The Telegraph that the Kroenkes could be tempted to sell the club for a bid of around £2bn.

As per the news outlet, the Gunners – one of the six English clubs who originally signed up to be part of the proposed European Super League (ESL) project – will face further fan protests after a large number of supporters gathered outside the Emirates Stadium before the 1-0 loss to Everton in the Premier League on Friday night to voice their anger at Stan Kroenke, with the hope that he will leave the north London club.

Daniel Ek, a Swedish billionaire entrepreneur and chief executive of Spotify, recently tweeted that he would ‘be happy to throw (his) name in the ring’ if Kroenke Sports and Entertainment (KSE) would like to sell Arsenal following the mass protests, and The Telegraph have now reported that he is ‘serious’ about tabling an offer.
