Last summer was Levy’s worst transfer window at Spurs

Daniel Levy has been Tottenham chairman since February 2001 and since then, he’s overseen, orchestrated and administered almost countless incomings and outgoings at the north London club, always remaining a central figure in transfer matters.

And on the most part, it’s hard to dispute with the work he’s done. Tottenham’s recent rise to Champions League finalists is often seen as Mauricio Pochettino’s hard work alone but really, Levy’s been at the epicentre of a transformation that’s taken a whole lot longer.

Come the end of the first season in which Levy was at the helm, Spurs finished 12th. In the time since there have been peaks and troughs (fifth place in 2006/07 followed by 11th the year after, for example) but ultimately, Tottenham have been on a continuously upward trajectory throughout his tenure.

Much of that has indeed owed to Levy’s dealings in the transfer market. His knack for buying young players, selling them on for considerably more and then reinvesting a fraction of the profits has worked a treat time and again.

A true test for any Spurs fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

Levy secured massive markups on the likes of Gareth Bale, Michael Carrick, Luka Modric, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker and Dimitar Berbatov, while there have been plenty of incremental gains as well. Benjamin Stamboui was at Spurs for just one season and yet Levy still secured over £2m in profit on him.

But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing and even the best at what they do make mistakes. Many will point to how Levy re-invested the Bale money in summer 2013, when Etienne Capoue, Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Vlad Chiriches, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen were brought in. Only the latter pair went on to any longevity at the club, the other five being little short of absolute flops.

But that summer, Levy at least made a profit of over £11m for Spurs and brought in Eriksen for just under £13m. He’d go on to make over 300 appearances for Tottenham, bagging 69 goals and 89 assists, before being sold this January at an eventual profit. Lamela is still at Spurs as well.

And that’s the case with most of Levy’s windows at Spurs. Whether it’s simply the net spend surplus, like during the two transfer windows in which Tottenham famously signed nobody, or the odd gem amongst an otherwise uninspiring rabble of signings, there is usually always one or two positives to take from Levy’s dealings.

But last summer remains a real exception to that as things stand, and may well go down as his worst ever transfer window at Spurs – not least because he veered so far away from the usual script, without anything of genuine note to show for it so far.

First and foremost, Spurs uncharacteristically produced a negative net spend of over £80m last summer, albeit somewhat justified by the fact they’d gone almost 18 months without signing anyone. But secondly and more important is the worrying lack of value for money within the cohort that arrived.

Of course, time may go on to paint a different picture, but the near £35m spent on youngsters Ryan Sessegnon and Jack Clarke doesn’t look like good business akin to low-cost punts on the likes of Dele Alli or Walker, or even for that matter Kyle Naughton and Lewis Holtby.

Clarke has failed to make any sort of impression on loan at Leeds and QPR already this season, whereas Sessegnon has gone from making eight Premier League goal contributions at Fulham last term to starting just four top flight games for the Lilywhites, despite Tottenham struggling for bodies at left-back for most of the campaign.

But perhaps the even bigger concern is Tanguy Ndombele. Again, Levy broke usual habits by splashing out a huge £54m fee, but the big gamble hasn’t paid off. He’s been left with a club-record signing who’s only been able to make 12 Premier League starts and appears to be completely at odds with his manager. Jose Mourinho has criticised him in public more than once, most recently after hooking him off at half-time against Burnley.

That leaves the loan swoop for Giovani Lo Celso as the only silver lining in Tottenham’s summer, but even that remains somewhat tenuous considering he’d only made three Premier League starts before being signed permanently on January 28th. Really, the first half of the season was just an extended trial, one that actually cost more than £15m in loan fees. Again, hardly fantastic value for money considering they then paid another £27m to acquire him full-time.

No doubt, a lot can change in football very quickly. Clarke and Sessegnon could go on to become key figures at Spurs in the coming years, and Ndombele may well turn out to be a talent worthy of club-record status.

But as things stand, it’s hard to see what Spurs have really gained from last summer’s spending apart from a significant transfer deficit and a number of potential duds, and this was acquired with the added luxury of just reaching a Champions League final – something that should’ve given them extra pulling power in the transfer market.

Last summer has all the makings of being remembered as Levy’s worst window for Spurs.

Liverpool fans drool over Harvey Elliott’s performance in 1-0 FA Cup win over Everton

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to drool over Harvey Elliott’s performance against Everton in the FA Cup on Sunday.Jurgen Klopp’s men recorded a 1-0 win over the Toffees at Anfield despite playing a number of academy graduates in Curtis Jones, Neco Williams, Pedro Chirivella and Nathaniel Phillips, as well as 16-year-old Elliott – in contrast, Carlo Ancelotti fielded a strong side consisting of players such as Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lucas Digne.

It was the latter of that Everton bunch who had a torrid time against 16-year-old Elliott on Sunday, as the teenager ran rings around the France international all afternoon until he was substituted for Rhian Brewster in the 79th minute.

The former Fulham prospect made three key passes against Everton – no player on either side recorded more – while Elliott also completed one dribble and was fouled twice.

Liverpool’s No.67 also attempted eight crosses, with two of them successful, while he also made one tackle and one clearance in what was a fine showing that defied his young age – his showing certainly had these Liverpool fans drooling…

This fan couldn’t believe that Elliott is only 16, saying that they “love it” when the diminutive forward gets on the ball.

Another supporter commended Elliott for the shift that he put in against Ancelotti’s men, before branding the teenager as “immense” and first-team material “for sure” – high praise indeed.

One fan pinpointed a moment where Klopp looked “so proud” of Elliott, before also pouring superlatives on the youngster by saying “what a player”.

These two supporters continued the adoration over Elliott’s performance.

One fan with the username ‘The LFC Community’ said that the young man’s positional discipline is “unbelievable” while another said that Elliott is “too good to be a 16-year-old” and “needs more first team minutes” – on the basis of his display in the FA Cup third round, it’s hard to argue with that.

How much do you remember about football in 2019? Our quiz will test your knowledge…

Lastly, this fan called Elliott an “incredible prospect” while also saying that he’s “playing with no fear whatsoever” – Liverpool’s new teen sensation really is playing the game like he’s at the park with some mates right now.

Revealed: 45% of polled Norwich fans think Teemu Pukki is worth between £10m – £15m

[ad_pod ]

Norwich striker Teemu Pukki has arguably been the sensation of the Championship this season, playing a starring role in Norwich’s surge to the top of the league.

Promotion looks extremely likely for the Canaries, with the Finnish forward’s 12 goals in 18 league starts a huge reason for that. The 28-year-old could also turn out to be the bargain of the season, arguably across every league in England, as he was bought in on a free transfer after leaving Danish side Brondby back in the summer.

Given his amazing form, it must be asked how much the former Schalke and Celtic man is worth now in the current market. His predatory traits and excellent footballing brain help him be as successful as he is in front of goal, as opposed to other players who may rely more on their physical attributes.

We asked fans of the Canaries just how much they think Pukki is worth after his heroics this season, and the majority share of 45% felt that he was worth between £10m-£15m, as shown by the results below…

Leeds should target Thiago Maia in the summer

Leeds remain unbeaten this season as they go into a tough away game against Millwall this Saturday.

The Yorkshire club have taken the Championship by storm so far this year with Marcelo Bielsa’s brand of attacking football. Under the Argentinian, Leeds have transformed themselves into a team that smothers its opposition with its high press and ability to play forward at pace.

Refreshingly for the Leeds faithful, Bielsa has worked with a team that is basically the same one that played last season – aside from Barry Douglas. Specifically, Kemar Roofe, Samu Saiz, Kalvin Phillips and Gaetano Berardi have become the best in the league at their respective positions.

Under Bielsa, Phillips has become a reliable midfielder who plays a key role in shielding the back four while also providing a base for the team to build up from. So far this season, the English midfielder has been incredibly reliable but if Leeds do get promoted this season, they need to be looking to add more midfield depth and possibly more midfield quality.

One player they should be looking at in the summer is Brazilian international and Lille midfield man, Thiago Maia. Valued at £3.6 million, Bielsa managed Maia during his brief stint at Lille and should try to bring the Brazil international to Yorkshire in the summer.

Great with the ball but also able to break up attacks, Maia would be a brilliant signing for Leeds. While Phillips has been exceptional so far this year, Maia is the man that could be a hit for Leeds in the Premier League.

What do you think Leeds fans?

Three reasons West Ham should move to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in January

Despite playing just six minutes of Premier League football all season, Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was named in the starting XI as the south coast outfit faced Everton at St Mary’s on Sunday.

The Denmark international hadn’t featured from the beginning of a game for the first team since the win against Middlesbrough in May, and it was a rare opportunity for the 22-year-old to impress in the middle of the park with Oriol Romeu suspended and Mario Lemina deemed only fit enough for a spot on the substitutes’ bench on his return from injury.

The former Bayern Munich man certainly took his chance and he was voted as the man of the match by the fans afterwards for his display in midfield, and he will be hoping to have sent manager Mauricio Pellegrino a huge message.

Meanwhile, West Ham United find themselves in a relegation battle right now and new boss David Moyes may be looking to make additions to his squad during the January transfer window in order to try and get his side away from the bottom three.

While the Irons have already been linked with potential deals for the likes of Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho and Bournemouth’s Harry Arter, making a move for Hojbjerg instead could prove to be a very shrewd move.

Here are three reasons West Ham should look to sign the Dane in the New Year…

His Everton performance

The links to the likes of Carvalho and Arter in The Mirror suggest that Moyes is looking for a new central/defensive midfielder, and he would have been impressed if he saw Hojbjerg’s performance against Everton.

The 22-year-old seemed to be everywhere on the pitch and as well as using his strength and tackling abilities to win the ball, he also showed the quality he has while he is in possession of it, too.

Southampton posted his match stats on their official Twitter account on Sunday, and it showed that he had an accuracy of 92% from 96 attempted passes, while he made four tackles, three interceptions and gained possession on 19 occasions in what was a fantastic all-action display.

His future is uncertain

While he may have impressed against Everton, the fact that was just his second appearance of the season and the fact that he appears to be behind Oriol Romeu, Mario Lemina and Steven Davis in the central midfield pecking order mean his future is still up in the air.

Speaking to the Southern Daily Echo after his man-of-the-match performance against the Toffees, Hojbjerg hinted that he could look to leave Southampton if he doesn’t get regular playing time soon, and that should give West Ham and Moyes some hope that they could bring the Dane to the London Stadium.

Potential

Because of the maturity he has on the pitch and when he is conducting interviews off of it, it is easy to forget that Hojbjerg is just 22 years of age and younger than the likes of Jack Stephens, James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond.

You certainly don’t play for Bayern Munich and under Pep Guardiola unless you have something about you, and while things may not have gone right for the Denmark international over the last couple of years there is little doubt at the potential he has to go on and improve.

Having showcased his all-round midfield abilities against Everton, West Ham could be pulling off a huge coup if they manage to sign him in January.

Chelsea fans react as Antonio Conte picks up double award

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte picked up both the Premier League and LMA Manager of the Year awards on Monday night in recognition of an excellent debut campaign in England in which his side won the top flight title.

After a disappointing 10th-placed finish last season, Blues fans would have been more hopeful than expectant of their chances this term following the appointment of the Italian, and they would certainly have been worried following a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates in October.

However, a change in formation led the west London outfit to embark on an incredible run that saw them wrap up the title with two matches to spare, eventually finishing with 30 wins from their 38 fixtures and 93 points.

Chelsea supporters were quick to have their say on the news via social media, and while some believe they have got the best manager in the world, others were wondering what former Blues boss Jose Mourinho must be thinking right now with Manchester United only able to finish in sixth.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Liverpool keen on ‘Iranian Messi’ as January looms

According to widespread reports, Liverpool are keeping a close eye on FC Rostov’s attacking star Sardar Azmoun, who has been dubbed ‘the Iranian Lionel Messi’.

What’s the story?

Well, according to the Guardian and respected Joe reporter Tony Barrett (above) Liverpool are keen on Azmoun as they plot to bolster their attacking options mid-season.

The Reds are set to lose Sadio Mane from early January until potentially early February with the pacey ex-Southampton man due to represent Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Danny Ings has recently been ruled out for the entire season with a nasty knee injury.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp will see his red-hot strike force plummet in terms of numbers in the New Year, although he does have Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi chomping at the bit to break into his XI.

It’s claimed that Azmoun is being looked at with a view to solving this issue, although at this stage it remains unclear as to how many targets are being eyed up, with it unlikely that all of the club’s eggs are in one basket.

What sort of player is Azmoun?

As his ‘Messi’ moniker suggests, Azmoun is a technically adept final third player. Not an all-out forward, the 21-year-old tends to operate in a withdrawn role behind a main striker and has been known to work from wide positions too.

In terms of his goalscoring ability, Azmoun has netted 16 times in just 22 appearances for Iran at senior international level, while last season he notched nine goals in the Russian Premier League in just 1,130 minutes – the least game time of any of the division’s top ten scorers.

He’s dragged that form into the current campaign, too, finding the net twice in Champions League qualification while scoring against Atletico Madrid in the tournament proper.

How would he fit at Liverpool?

With Klopp’s team all about high-tempo, fluid attacking, the German will feel a drop in numbers in the New Year. While Origi offers him a physical presence and Sturridge supreme finishing ability, neither are truly suited to slotting into Mane’s wider role, so Azmoun, who can drift across a frontline, may be more useful.

In terms of age, Azmoun, who will turn 22 in January, fits the profile Liverpool are likely to pursue, with a younger player likely to be more content with a bench role when everyone is available.

USMNT's Weston McKennie makes most of fourth consecutive start by setting up goal in Juventus win

Weston McKennie helped set up another Juventus goal as he made his fourth consecutive start at right wing-back.

  • McKennie sets up goal
  • Milik provides finish
  • Juve win 1-0

McKennie earned a secondary assist on Juve's lone goal of the match, helping set up Arkadiusz Milik's finish in the 1-0 win over Lecce. With the win, Juventus bounced back from a weekend loss to Sassuolo, which was their first defeat of the Serie A season.

McKennie's U.S. men's national team teammate Tim Weah came on to replace him late on in a like-for-like American-for-American substitution.

  • Getty Images

    WHAT HAPPENED?

McKennie helped set up Juventus' opening goal, with his backpost cross undoing a resolute Lecce defense.

The American star received the ball on the right-hand side and proceeded to play a cross to the back post, finding midfielder Adrien Rabiot. The Frenchman headed the ball right back across goal to Milik, who was left with a simple tap-in on the other side to give Juve the 1-0 lead.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The match was McKennie's fourth-straight as a starter, as he has, at least temporarily, taken Weah's spot as right wing-back.

McKennie has played well during that stretch, contributing to all three goals in a win over Lazio recently before his role in Milik's finish on Tuesday.

It's been a bold decision from Massimiliano Allegri to keep McKennie at the position, one which definitely isn't his strongest, especially since it takes away his ability to be a late arriver in the box. However, McKennie has repaid his faith in recent weeks, putting in several strong performance in the unfamiliar role.

What that all means for Tim Weah, though, is an interesting storyline to watch. He's now gone four games without a start as his USMNT teammate has seemingly leapfrogged him for that starting role so early in his Juventus career. Weah looked good against Sassuolo, but McKennie remained in the XI anyway, and he certainly didn't lose ground with his performance on Tuesday.

  • Getty

    USMNT IMPACT

Gregg Berhalter will be glad to see McKennie fit and contributing, particularly with big friendlies against Germany and Ghana coming up in the near future.

McKennie's Leeds United move could have really sapped his confidence, as that experience was worse than anyone could have imagined. His decision to remain at Juventus also looked like it could backfire, with there seemingly being no place for him to start in the midfield to start the season.

Because of that, the U.S. will be happy to see him starting and creating goals as he looks to rebuild himself with this Juventus return. Would it be better to see him win a midfield spot? Of course, but McKennie will take what he can get for now.

    GOAL'S RATINGS

    Weston McKennie (7/10):

Another good performance from the American, who continues to make a new role his own. His crossing, which felt like it should be a weakness, has been good. Defensively, he's been sound too, with McKennie doing plenty of good work on that side of the ball to help preserve the clean sheet.

    Tim Weah (N/A):

A very late sub as Juve looked to seal the win. Only got a handful of touches before the final whistle.

Twelve in a row! Women's Super League winners and losers as Arsenal equal record and Chelsea beat bogey team

The Gunners looked slick away at Liverpool while Chelsea overcame Brighton during another dramatic round of WSL action.

Arsenal are top of the Women's Super League table and one victory away from an historic feat after they beat Liverpool on Sunday, though they have Manchester United and Chelsea hot on their heels.

Victory over West Ham next weekend would make it a record-breaking 13th consecutive victory for the high-flying Gunners.

Head coach Jonas Eidevall isn't too bothered about his side's remarkable run but he's aware of what maintaining that kind of form could lead to, with Arsenal pursuing a first trophy in three years.

However, it's worth noting that Manchester United have an identical record to the leaders, having maintained their own perfect start to the season with victory at Leicester.

Chelsea also have 12 points on the board, albeit having played a game more, thanks to a 2-0 win over bogey team Brighton.

So, we could be in for an epic title race and a close fight for Champions League spots, while the battle to beat the drop will also be intense.

Below, GOAL picks out the winners and losers from this latest round of Women's Super League action…

GettyWINNER: Chelsea

Things could have easily gone against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Blues rotated heavily after a big midweek win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Women's Champions League, benching captain Magdalena Eriksson and Sam Kerr among others.

They did so against a Brighton side that have become something of a bogey team for them, too. The Seagulls have taken points off the reigning champions in each of the last three seasons, after being promoted in 2019.

With the game goalless at the break, the possibility of dropped points was even more of a threat, a pitch heavily affected by the torrential rain stopping the visitors from creating much in open play.

However, in their third game without manager Emma Hayes, who is recovering from surgery, Chelsea picked up all three points.

It was a win that showed the strength in depth at the club. Beth England, who has almost become a back-up to Kerr, broke the deadlock on a rare start, while assistant coach Denise Reddy steered the team to victory, subbing on Pernille Harder to score the second late on.

There were signs that this wouldn't be a happy outing at all for Chelsea, but champions always find a way to win.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: Rachel Daly

Only Manchester City's Bunny Shaw has more goals in the WSL this season than Rachel Daly, the England international who returned home after a six-year spell in the United States this summer.

She's been the main outlet for an Aston Villa side that struggled massively for goals last year, with no team scoring fewer in the 2021-22 campaign.

To watch her leave the pitch with injury in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Everton, then, will be of big concern. Daly jumped with Toffees goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan to challenge for a cross, collided with her and then saw her opponent land on top of her as both fell to the ground.

We'll find out in the coming days what the impact of that incident is, with Villa – and Daly – hoping that it isn't as bad as it seems ahead of an extremely difficult away trip to Chelsea.

GettyWINNER: Nikita Parris

It's been a difficult start to life at Manchester United for Nikita Parris, in keeping with a difficult past year or so.

The forward struggled for game time with Arsenal last season, played a bit-part role in England's Euro campaign despite emerging a European champion and hasn't hit the ground running for her new club, having moved to Manchester in the summer.

However, Sunday might prove a turning point.

The 28-year-old started as United travelled to bottom club Leicester in what proved to be a trying assignment for the club joint-top of the WSL table. It was a poor performance, which came as a surprise given the great form the team is in.

The reason they left with three points, though, was thanks to Parris' first league goal for the club – a wonderful first-half header.

It will have done her the world of good not just to get on the scoresheet, but to have contributed such an important goal, too, and might be just what she needs to kick on in United red.

GettyLOSER: Reading

With Manchester United and Arsenal making up two of Reading's opening three WSL fixtures, it was always going to be a tricky start to the season for the Royals. After losing to Brighton in between those two games, it became four defeats in a row in the league on Sunday when they were beaten at West Ham.

Given the tough matches Kelly Chambers' side have started with, it felt like this one against an opponent not in that 'top four' was even more important. Sadly, they gave themselves a mountain to climb when they fell three goals behind with less than half an hour on the clock.

Reading showed character to bring it back to 3-2 but this was an opportunity missed, with a red card for Hawa Cissokho last week adding to injury woes for West Ham in defence to deplete them further.

Instead, the Royals remain without a point on the board and next week they will take on the only other team in the league who have also lost all of their games so far: Leicester. It already feels like an early season six-pointer.
